WELCOME TO SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support the small businesses in their community. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday of December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. This year Small Business Saturday is on Saturday 5th December. Last year the Plymouth FSB Branch held an Independents’ Trail where we highlighted great small businesses in the Independent Quarter and Plymouth City Market and introduced local MPs to the area. This year, the Branch Committee approached Plymouth City Council and Plymouth City Centre Company with a view to expanding on SBS activities and that’s certainly happened. You can visit www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com to learn more about the national campaign and www.visitplymouth.co.uk to find out more about the activities being promoted in Plymouth’s Independent Quarter on Saturday 5th. We really appreciate your support and look forward to doing business with you on Small Business Saturday and beyond. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT of whom have agreed support such as free parking on Small Business Saturday. As experts in business, we will be supporting the Small Business Saturday bus tour stops. Alongside these, we will be facilitating advice and networking sessions for local businesses. This will be accompanied with a virtual social media campaign to raise awareness amongst local firms in each town as it arrives.
John Allan, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses tells us about its plans to support and celebrate Small Business Saturday this year. “The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is a proud supporter of Small Business Saturday. We know from our research that for every £1 spent locally, £1.76 is placed back into the local economy, underlining the important contribution made by small firms to their communities. We have encouraged our members to enter the Small Biz 100 campaign and over a quarter of those that have been selected are FSB members. I will personally be visiting some of these winners over the upcoming months and celebrating their achievement with them. We are also working with MPs, on a cross party basis, to encourage them to visit the interesting, unique, and diverse businesses we have in our membership. In one area we are even hiring out a mini bus with the local MP as part of a tour of small firms. We are also working with local councils, many
Our activities are as diverse as organising a market in Trafford with the leader of the council to running a ‘flash conga’ session for small businesses in Birmingham. In my own neck of the woods of Merseyside, we are running a ‘local at Christmas’ campaign to include a market at Knowlsey, setting up a Christmas tree in Sefton and organising the Christmas lights switch on at Southport.
Every £1 spent locally, £1.76 is placed back into the local economy Meanwhile in London and South Yorkshire, we are organising a ‘selfie challenge’ with councillors and MPs and for my own part, I will be taking the plunge and marking Small Business Saturday by doing a skydive for charity. Watch this space.... This is just a flavour of some of the many exciting things the FSB is up to in support of Small Business Saturday and I urge others to get behind the campaign and celebrate small firms.”

BRITAIN’S ENTREPRENEURIAL SPARK IS ALIVE AND WELL
says FSB
Recent information on Business Population Estimates released by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills makes for fascinating reading. John Allan, National Chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “The statistics show an annual boost of 146,000 new small businesses to the UK economy, bringing the total number to a record 5.35 million. This fact underlines the importance of small businesses as creators of employment and growth. They make up 99.3% of all businesses in the UK, generating £1.2 trillion in turnover and accounting for 48% of private sector employment.
“The increase in small business numbers shows that the entrepreneurial spark is alive and well in the UK.” The key is to continue to encourage people to take the plunge and set up their own business by providing business support that will help them grow and meet their aspirations. “Small business confidence will be crucial in driving the economy and job creation. To do this, they need further reassurance from Government and policymakers that they will back them, rewarding their risk taking while minimising the burdens that will hinder their growth.” The FSB is the UK’s leading business organisation with around 200,000 members. It exists to protect and promote the interests of the UK’s Real-Life Entrepreneurs who run their own business. More information is available at www.fsb.org.uk and follow on twitter @fsb_policy For regional FSB contacts please go to www.fsb.org.uk/regions Tel: 01803 321251

IT’S A FUNNY OL’ LIFE! We asked local business people what they thought about running their own businesses and here are some of their comments. “ The best things include working alongside some great people to try and make a good living for all of you in a close knit atmosphere - where everyone can feel involved and play their part in making a success of the company.
“ The best part for me having been running a business for 23 years is knowing I can be resilient. When times are tough, with the support of my Sigma team, I know we are all determined and will win through – one way or the other. The worst thing about running a business is enduring disrupted sleep patterns ! I am always waking up in the middle of the night and then I can’t stop thinking about all the things I should have done yesterday or will have to do tomorrow. I need to be able to learn to switch off! ” FSB Chair Lesley Shorrocks runs Sigma Marketing & Advertising Ltd “ The best thing about running my business is seeing the delight on someone’s face when they put on a piece of jewellery we’ve made for them, as I’ll have overseen the process from talking about their initial design idea, right through to the final craftsmanship. The worst thing is the paperwork - I never seem to get on top of it! ” Ray Robins Robins & Moore Goldsmiths
The great satisfaction you have when you’ve won a contract knowing that is going to mean security and growth for you all. Growing a team of people who feel connected to the success of the business. The worst thing is - STRESS!!!!!!, stress and oh yes more stress ” Debbie Mitchell Finance Director at Mitchell Architects in Stoke “ Quitting the day job two years ago to launch my own public relations business was probably one of the most daunting but rewarding experiences of my career. As anyone who runs a small business knows, working for yourself is demanding and often unpredictable, but as a journalist that’s what I love about it the most. It is my job to help small businesses shout about their brand across multimedia platforms and help raise the profile of their own hard work so they don’t become overshadowed by the ‘big boys’. “ Jayne Freer PR
“ All small publishers are suffering and many have gone out of business, and this is due to the lack of shops, the rise of the internet and greedy middlemen. However, we sell paper books and ebooks all over the world via many avenues, and we also offer an excellent self-publishing service which is good value for the author. The good aspects of being in business are that we don’t have to put up with corporate politics or office bullies. We can take time off when we feel like it and work the hours that suit us. Jan is an owl who likes to work at night, so working from home in his own business suits him perfectly. Our work is creative and we enjoy fostering the talent shown by our authors. We meet fascinating people and we sometimes have a real laugh about it all. ”
“ The best thing is being your own boss and knowing that you are in control of the decisions you make. The worst thing is, it can be a lonely place sometimes… ” Ross Dent Sunrise Windows, Plympton

MAPPING A FUTURE FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS Starting a business takes a lot of planning, and a lot of hard work. You have to adjust course as you progress and once you open your doors, literally or figuratively, you can exhale and take in the moment. Appreciate the magnitude of what you’ve accomplished just by being able to say: I run my own business. Don’t sit back in contentment for too long, though. Remember the saying “Fail to plan and you plan to fail” - you really do need to have at least a basic idea of where you see yourself, and your business, in the future. Here are our tips to get you started on mapping a future for your business:
HAVE A BUSINESS PLAN A business plan is exactly what it says. It’s your plan for what you will do, when, how and who else you might need to help you. Getting it all down on paper may seem like a huge undertaking, but if you take it step by step and tackle one aspect at a time, you’ll soon have at least a working outline you can expand on later. Focus on finances, opportunities, analyse your competition, your customers, and pay attention to the details.
PROTECT YOURSELF Being in business comes with many risks, too. It’s easy to miss all of the possibilities and of course you can’t possibly anticipate every eventuality. Just put on your most gloomy hat and try and analyse the potential risks to your business. The FSB can ease some of the burden. As a member, you are entitled to legal and tax protection and advice, health and safety and employment law advice and legal
documents, all included in your membership. You also have access to experts in insurance, card payment systems and pensions. All things you need to consider when you are the one making all the decisions that will help your business thrive.
SET A DEADLINE Make sure you have a timeline. “One day” is likely to become never unless you set a specific date by which you either accomplish the set goal, or review it. Things change constantly, so it’s perfectly fine to find that what you thought to be a great idea is now a fruitless enterprise 6 months later. Reset, and chart a new course. Setting a deadline forces you to review your progress and make changes before it’s too late.
BUILD UP YOUR CREDENTIALS Very few people land in business fully formed. Chances are that you are an unknown in your field. That means you have to build up your reputation. Getting a customer to abandon their current supplier to do business with you is a tough job, and unfortunately there are no shortcuts. Start by getting your name out there. If you use social media, comment on posts from people who already have a following. Post handy tips for your trade, regardless of what it is. Offer a free taster service. Go to networking events in your area. Most importantly, be consistent in your service. When customers recommend you, you want to make sure that you provide the same excellent service that earned you that recommendation in the first place. Starting a business and keeping it going requires time and effort. The fact that you are in business for yourself singles you out as someone not afraid of that work. And the FSB will support you every step of the way.
Don’t let your business sound tinpot! Professional music on-hold and audio marketing services helps make your business sound professional. Promote what you do. Improve your brand.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE Small Business Saturday is a national campaign that supports, inspires and promotes small businesses on the first Saturday in December. The campaign encourages businesses to promote themselves and work with other small businesses, and to encourage people to ‘shop local’, supporting small businesses and their communities. Christmassy delights they have to offer. Businesses selling everything from handmade Christmas decorations and jewellery to Christmas crafts can be found at Frankfort Gate between 10am and 3pm. The Sound Council choir will be performing Christmas carols in the morning and special ‘Christmas’ guests will be making an appearance throughout that day. This year Plymouth City Centre Company has teamed up with the Plymouth Federation of Small Businesses to provide a business networking event followed by a Christmas Fayre - all in the heart of the City Centre’s independent quarter. Businesses are invited to attend the networking event and meet other local entrepreneurs in Plymouth on Saturday 5 December.
