No strangers to BLOCK magazine, Globiance is back, having graced the cover back in 2019 and 2021. Since then the company has grown extensively, building a second brand - GlobiancePay. The sister label launched its STO this May. Read the full interview with husband-wife duo - Oliver and Irina - from page 28. Also worth a read is an interview with Kenneth Stern, General Manager for Binance Philippines. Education, he says, is at the core of what they do. Follow his thoughts from page 14 as he delves into the value of cultivating an informed community that values ethical practices. The Binance Academy, a dedicated platform where individuals can access valuable resources, offers a deeper understanding of blockchain technology and digital assets.

Meanwhile Dr. Jane Thomason, author of Blockchain for Global Social Change and Applied Ethics in a Digital World, discusses the emergence of DAOs in the health sector.

Founder of Blockchain Network Philippines (BNPH), Ken Berey, is also a proponent of leveraging the power of web3 technologies. He believes that ‘Web3 is highly effective at removing barriers and allowing far more readily available access to the global talent pool.’ Read his interview from page 18.

A MILESTONE EVENT

Our first event here in the Philippines marks a significant milestone for the SiGMA Group.

In 2019 the company sought new horizons that stretched beyond the comfort of its home turf; Malta. The Philippines, already establishing itself as a key driver of growth in some of Asia’s biggest markets, hold tremendous untapped potential.

With a strong hub emerging from the businessfriendly capital - Manila, opportunities are plentiful for the Group’s growing network to connect with thriving industries and establish meaningful relationships with some of the top thinkers, operators, affiliates, and suppliers in the country.

An office was then set up in Manila, with ambitions to launch the very first conference outside of Malta in the summer of 2020. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic later that year however, put these plans on ice.

While our virtual conference, geared towards the Asian markets, was successful, nothing beats the thrill of an in-person event. Fast forward three years, along with the reopening of our offices in Bonifacio Global City - a thriving financial business district in Taguig - and the Asia show is back with a bang as we welcome 15,000 international and local delegates to our inaugural event.

There is growing momentum in the country’s emerging tech scene and there is value here, not just for companies seeking fresh opportunities in new jurisdictions but for the economic future of the region. We hope this event, alongside upcoming summits in Cyprus and Malta serves as a catalyst for growth - bringing attendees a unique platform to showcase their products, strengthen their networks, and foster innovation.

The market response to Binance Academy has been highly encouraging. It fills the gap for reliable and easily understandable resources, emphasising the importance of conducting research before making investment decisions. The recent five-day roadshow in the Philippines, with over a thousand enthusiastic student participants, highlights the impact and potential of Binance Academy.

Can you provide an overview of your key responsibilities as the General Manager for Binance in the Philippines and highlight the impactful initiatives you lead?

My primary focus is education. I organise finance academy events, including recent Blockchain 101 sessions at major universities,

I also collaborate with regulators, educating them about blockchain and crypto frameworks implemented in other jurisdictions. By highlighting these opportunities, we aim to encourage our government to explore and implement similar technologies locally.

Engaging with the community is crucial. I help organise events to empower individuals with knowledge about our products and services. Through active participation, attendees can develop a comprehensive understanding of this transformative technology and its implications for the future of currency.

What strategies and initiatives has Binance implemented to prioritise compliance and effectively combat cybercrime?

At Binance, compliance is a top priority. We've significantly expanded our compliance team, growing it by over 500% in the past year to have a global workforce of 750+ officers. Our officers, many with law enforcement backgrounds, make us industry leaders in compliance.

To strengthen our commitment, we've recruited top talent with extensive law enforcement experience, including directors from the European Police, Singapore National Police, and FBI. These appointments highlight our serious approach to compliance.

Education is also crucial. In the Philippines, we organised a cybersecurity training event, collaborating with over 150 officials to solve real-life cybercrime cases. We extend these initiatives globally, partnering with other jurisdictions to combat cybercrime effectively. Our objective is to support law enforcement, governments, central banks, and regulatory bodies in combating cybercrime. By sharing expertise and resources, we can collectively tackle the challenges posed by cyber threats.

A local government saying aptly captures the urgency of the situation: "We're fighting cybercrime with pitchforks while criminals have guns." It highlights the urgency for cooperation and providing necessary resources to empower law enforcement agencies at the local level.

How do conferences like the AIBC Summit in Manila contribute to advancing your mission of education and benefiting communities like the Filipino community in the Philippines?

Conferences and industry events hold immense value by providing a platform for thought leaders to share novel ideas, fostering trust and learning. This increased trust and broader reach lead to greater adoption and growth within the industry.

In the context of the Filipino community, conferences like the AIBC Summit offer valuable opportunities to learn, gain insights, and explore local use cases. By participating, Filipinos can stay informed, engage with professionals, and address specific challenges, such as financial inclusion. These conferences foster knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and overall industry growth, benefiting communities worldwide, including the Filipino community.

Blockchain Network Philippines (BNPH) is a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) leader leveraging web3 technologies to play an influential role in the market. Founder Ken Berey gives his unique take on the industry and its opportunities.

The Philippines has long been known as the capital of the Business Process Outsourcing world (BPO), with several internationally enterprising giants such as Microsoft and IBM choosing to outsource to the Philippines.

This is due to a variety of well-developed factors that either naturally occur or have been expertly propagated within the Philippines. Many of the reasons are related to history, both recent and over a longer period of time. The most apparent factor must certainly be the language proficiencies that are traditional to the archipelago. Most Filipinos speak English as a second language, making it easily accessible on a global scale.

The heavy Western influence on the islands can also be seen in the nation’s comprehensive openness to many foreign businesses, allowing seamless connectivity between Filipino operators and their clientele. Labour costs are favourable in the Philippines due to a lower cost of living compared to Western nations.

Ken emphasised that the Filipino workforce is highly skilled, possessing a strong work ethic, hospitality, and a customer-oriented mindset. Coupled with a high collegiate success rate, Filipinos are adaptable and qualified.

He also acknowledged the role of the government in the Philippines, which actively supports the BPO industry, recognizing its potential to support economic growth and diversification.

To address the risks of scams and data breaches prevalent in the Web3 space, the Philippines has implemented client protections through rigorous licensing and permit systems.

Ken would also stress the high level of skill involved across a BPO organisation, which contrary to popular belief, requires a good deal more than a keen sense in the field of marketing.

Speaking about BNPH’s practices, he explained it is ensured that staff members possess the required skills, experience and industry knowledge in regard to the web3 space and that BNPH’s success is necessitated by this.

employees, and in the Bear season we maintained the 40+ above crypto projects per month.”

There are many predictors to consider when observing market movements, however, in the crypto industry this is extremely volatile and exceptionally rapid. This is why Ken expresses the need for extensive mobility and highly informed flexibility when involving the delicate process of scalability.

Ken then highlighted the importance BNPH places on customer experience, as his organisation offers 24/7 community management that includes facilities for online video chats, not to mention the provision of multilingual support for their global portfolio of business partners.

Speaking on the particular potency of web3 technologies in the BPO industry, Ken expressed how the benefits are impressively vast. Most BPOs today actually do not have access to web3 technologies and additionally have a great ignorance about their abilities, especially when focusing on payment methods.

By opening itself up to crypto payments, BNPH has brought itself to a position of great advantage by being able to accept stablecoin exchange for fiat to paper money.

Ken then touched upon the issue of transaction fees, and how, despite their great prominence in today’s banking system, they have been causing several issues related to scams and fraud.

However, if the BPOs of today can manage to integrate the use of crypto payments, this would solve many of these issues along with many other ones of relation besides.

Through crypto payments, BPOs may store their transaction records on the blockchain and create a suitable trail for access and verification by all relevant parties. Ken postulates that this will generate transparency that will facilitate regulatory compliance and ensure a BPO’s adherence to internal audits, and industry standards.

He also acknowledged that web3 is highly effective at removing barriers and allowing far more readily available access to the global talent pool, leading to better service quality, improved efficiency and cost savings.

All these positive factors seem to be creating a highly conducive climate for Ken’s highly specialised endeavours. The use of web3 in particular seems to be the most at-risk factor, with new legislation being inaugurated by several nations across the world imminently.

When questioned on this, Ken emphasised how vast the subject of regulation of web3 technologies is even when applying a particular focus to blockchain technologies.

In a general sense, he hopes for an overall acceptance both in spirit and in tangible action when it comes to web3 technologies, but also gave a statement about the inherent challenge to regulation which perhaps seems more ominous than most would hope.

“How do you enforce something that in principle does not want to be regulated?”

Serving Crypto, AI and Gaming companies with global incorporation, financial licensing, banking and international Tax Strategy, Jaguar A. Gal, CPA, Adv. CEO of the international JAGuar Reg&Comp. gave an exclusive interview on the greatest challenges facing the industry today.

Give me a few details that you see as key in crypto legislation going forward?

I see MiCA regulation - which was recently approved - as a key regulation standards setting, which will affect most European countries’ regulatory opinions, rules and procedures going forward. Among which, I see a main focus on limitation by regulation of stable or pegged coins, due to their challenge over monetary sovereignty.

First - a set, steady, and thorough regulatory guidance is a great enabler and an important preliminary element to our sector’s stability. Unlike the U.S. method of “regulation by enforcement”which sets the rules after the actions instead of in advance.

However, these regulatory steps will limit the sector’s players’ freedom which has been part of the game for many so far, those who were willing to play in this regulatory uncertainty.

I believe the cost-benefit ratio is highly positive, though - since it will enable more institutional players, and will block most non-compliant players, hence enhancing public inventors’ financial safety and protection.

Which countries look poised to be a favourable destination for crypto enterprise and what factors make them so?

Germany is no doubt one of the industry’s leaders, joining the established leadership of Switzerland.

The UAE is quickly developing regulation to enable crypto players as well as Hong Kong, and Singapore with its recent publication of eased terms.

Countries that will adopt regulation based on MiCA’s principles, and will set  “passporting” rules to migrate and co-act in these countries more quickly and smoothly, will definitely thrive as preferred incorporation choices.

What are some of the legal challenges new startups using the blockchain will have to face in the current climate?

It is no news that banking and payment is a main challenge for startups and established corporations alike. They are finding the compliance burden to be a limiting factor in this sense with increasingly limited funds available to cover compliance costs.

Other legal challenges relate to the lack of enabling crypto specific regulations, hence the burden of compliance to securities laws and procedures - which naturally cannot relate to crypto currency’s new and particular financial elements. For similar reasons taxation laws are also a challenge.

In what ways has generative AI affected your sector if at all?

I’ve been consulting on AI regulation for the last two and half years - but besides corporate and academic institutions, it mattered to no one until November 2022, when OpenAI released its ChatGPT 3 engine to public usage, the sector exploded.

So far I’ve mainly dealt with regulatory consulting regarding AI, the recent changes affected not only my own productivity, but my clients’ interests to learn more. Many of my legal colleagues and competitors purchase my consulting services in regards to AI tools and how to use them.

Do you feel that implementing and integrating AI from a legal standpoint will become more or less difficult in the future?

I do not only feel, I know, and strongly believe that implementing and integrating AI from a legal standpoint has already become absolutely challenging in the present and will continue to be in the short and long term future: AI faces so many changes to thought processes and legal concepts, that regulators are finding it hard to chase the pace of new developments in reaction to those.

What legal factors will companies on the blockchain have to be wary of in order to ensure its survival and success in the years to come?

Blockchain companies are facing difficulties adjusting to enforcement of securities regulations upon their activities, whilst mostly lacking the capabilities and budget required for such compliance.

They’re also coping with Anti-Money Laundering compliance requirements, which are difficult to apply in current crypto-client and investor’s libertarian culture.

Licensing requirements are also a main obstacle to blockchain companies, which are steadfast in their claim that all they do is research and development, exclusively in financial markets.

In your last interview with us you spoke about the incredible growth trajectory Globiance has witnessed over the last few years. How are things going?

Oliver: We’ve been going non-stop since 2018 and we’ve made a great deal of progress in that time. Over the past 5 years, we have been expanding our centralised exchanges by adding branches in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australiaand of course we also offer a decentralised exchange, as well.

The new Globiance Deposit Widget has also been added to enable clients to buy crypto using cards, bank transfers as well as many different local payment methods such as - PIX, AstroPay, SPEI, KHIPU, WebPay, PSE, QRIS, FPX, PayNow, ThaiQR, Giropay, Neteler, Skrill and more.

Another nice feature that we offer enables our clients to handle their own payments using integrated, online-banking functions. IBANs and cards can be ordered to round up the offering.

Lastly, we’ve just released a brand new user-interface for our web-platform and I think it looks very cool.

What about businesses and retailers - in what ways do you cater to them?

Oliver: That’s a great question. We’ve maintained a strong focus on our business clients from the start, and Globiance already acts as the financial center for many businesses.

Businesses can now use GlobianceQR POS (point of sale) to handle payments for clients making in-person transactions. The business generates a QR code, then clients can simply scan and pay (in a store, on a market). Account balances are always available

We’ve recently expanded our business functions to reflect both real world and online transactions. Irina: Have you seen the cool pink look? That was my doing. We also have a mint-green version available if pink is not your preference. As a psychologist who has worked with many people, putting together color-schemes that are appealing to a wide variety of people is an important part of the process. My main objective however, is actually to help people – to positively change the lives of as many people as I can. Revolutionising the outdated banking system and providing a reliable, fair, and accessible financial solution to everyone on the planet, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status, is my main motivation. You’re already a busy business woman and now you’ve built a second brand - ‘GlobiancePay' in the background, how is that going?

The recent developments in the banking industry reveal that we definitely need a change and our latest plan to expand GlobiancePay globally is a reflection of this. We have and are obtaining all the necessary banking, investment management and securities as well as dealing with licenses worldwide, so we can offer our services to literally everyone on the planet.

We have just released our Security Token Offering - where retail and professional investors can actually become the owners of the “Bank of the Future” simply by investing. More importantly we’ve kept the price of the STO affordable at just $1 US Dollar per token –so that everyone can afford to take part in this opportunity.

What sort of experience do you have in the banking industry that would give potential investors the confidence that GlobiancePay will be successful long-term?

Oliver: In Germany the biggest client for our IT Service company was CitiBank - we serviced the Frankfurt branch for over 8 years. We then moved our headquarters to Malta from where we serviced other banks in Europe for another 5 years. We technically serviced many large banks such as the ‘IKANO Bank Group’ - the bank that belongs to the ‘IKEA’ furniture store.

In total we have more than 13 years servicing the European banks. During that time we gathered an in-depth understanding of the inner-workings and processes of the banks. We are in a unique position because we have the technical, internal, experience, as well as the knowledge-base regarding the intricacies of how bank systems actually operate. This played a major role in our decision to build Globiance in 2018. We saw the need for change with these outdated systems and knew we could build something better; a real-world approach that’s more in-touch with the people and where the future of banking is headed.

In what ways can you see GlobiancePay benefitting its investors & banking clients in the future?

Oliver: Holders of the GBPAY Security Token actually receive a revenue share of the business. The token holders also have a say in the strategy of the bank. Lastly, the tokens can be converted into conventional equity at a later stage.

Oliver, The traditional banking institutions have had a firm grip on the banking business for centuries. It must have crossed your mind that you would be taking on an industry that has left little room for competition, by setting up a new bank, you’re basically “taking on the Titans” so to speak. What kind of roadblocks or challenges have you encountered from the larger institutions or regulators while setting up your platform, if any?

Oliver: Looking at competition, yes of course there are many global banks but they are deeply lacking when it comes to crypto integration. There are also some crypto exchanges that have expanded in some countries but they’re lacking the banking aspect of the equation. As an all-around crypto and banking platform, we integrate all financial services. We’re happy to be pioneers in the field. We accepted the challenge by jumping in the game way back in 2018, at a time when the markets were highly unfavorable. Unlike traditional banks that deal primarily with fiat currencies, Globiance focuses on digital assets and cryptocurrencies as well. We also provide services for buying, selling, and storing cryptocurrencies, as well as facilitating crypto-related transactions.

Leveraging blockchain technology enables decentralized and transparent transactions. By utilising blockchain Globiance provides enhanced security, immutability, and traceability of transactions - reducing the need for intermediaries and increasing efficiency.

Traditional banks are typically bound by geographic limitations and may require physical presence for certain services. In contrast, Globiance aims to offer its services globally, leveraging the borderless nature of cryptocurrencies and digital assets. This enables individuals from different parts of the world to access financial services without any barriers.

We are continually exploring, innovating, and offering new financial products and services. This includes features such as decentralised lending, tokenized assets, yield farming, and other opportunities that can leverage the unique characteristics of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. Where do you see GlobiancePay in 2025?

Irina: In my vision, by 2025 25% of the adult population will have installed our App and will be using it to pay for shopping and purchases on a daily basis. GlobiancePay clients will be using the QR scan function - both in-store and online along with the Globiance “Checkout” feature. Children will be able to use Globiance “family features” such as “crypto saving” or “pocket money”. Users will be able to walk up to vending machines etc, buy a drink or whatever they want, just by scanning their QR code to pay with the Globiance App. The uses for GlobiancePay will be absolutely endless.

The adoption of innovative technologies to improve global environmental issues has been a priority in the Philippines. According to environment and clean energy guru Assaad Rassouk, the archipelago is making commendable commitment to fight back against pollution, and with the use of innovative technology, is reversing the damage to the climate, clean air and water.

Razzouk claims that there is an imbalance in Western media in reporting the environmental and sustainability progress made in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries. He added that the remarkable environmental transformation in this nation, made up of 7,600 islands, in the last 20 years has been remarkable.

However, Razzouk says, there are many good news stories on tech innovation and regulation in support of the Philippine green economy. For example, the super typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines in 2013, affected 4.1 million people, killed more than 6,000, left 1,800 missing, damaged 1.1 million homes and destroyed 33 million coconut trees, inflicting damage estimated at US $5.8 billion.

The typhoon made headlines worldwide, but what happened next hardly made the news. While carbon majors have continued to exacerbate pollution, for two decades, the Philippines has been introducing clean air and water legislation, deforestation and biodiversity protection measures planting 1.5 billion trees in 2019 and increasing its nature and ocean reserve areas by 1200 km sq. Filipino green tech has made great strides in fighting back against emissions and waste. Hydroponic farming and vertical and rooftop horticulture have increased yields and cut costs, and aquaponic companies have converted fish waste into a natural chemical-free fertilizer.

With summer temperatures averaging 27 degrees and humidity reaching 82 percent, Filipinos have been replacing energyinefficient air conditioning with inverter models that use micro tech processors to match compressor speed to the required output, achieving the target temperature while saving energy and cost.

Razzouk describes plastic pollution as a global pandemic and he says that the Philippine Government is on a mission to address the scourge. When China banned waste imports from the West, much of it was diverted to the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries. Still, in 2019 the Philippines re-exported Canadian household waste mislabelled as recyclable back to its country of origin, signaling its tough stance on dumping.Other innovative green tech being developed in the Philippines is the quest for biodegradable and sustainable plastic substitutes that include a material like paper made out of seeds.When discarded, it starts new plant growth.

Filipinos are also in the vanguard of research into biodegradable plastic packaging made from plants like cassava. The reduction of single-use plastic packaging is high on the Government’s list. It has banned plastic bags and straws and has set a target of a reduction of 50 percent in throw-away plastic packaging by 2050.

Innovative technology has also made it possible for recyclable plastics to be transferred into gasoline, diesel and kerosene. PolyGreen Technology and Resources, a Philippines-based company, has successfully developed a system called “Pyrolysis” developed by Filipino inventor Jayme Navarro. It burns cleaner than regular fuel due to its lower sulfur content and it is also 10 to 20 percent cheaper to produce. The technology created by Navarro offers an environmentally friendly solution to reduce plastic waste and combat pollution while providing an alternative source of fuel.

As a nation surrounded by the ocean Rassouk points out that it is already polluted by 14 billion tonnes of microplastic, the Philippine Government and green tech innovators are driven to continue their remarkable progress in the fight against climate change, waste and air and water quality degradation.

Asaad Razzouk argues that the carbon majors are aware of the harm being caused by their activities but remain in denial, obstructing climate action not through ignorance but driven by greed. He has joined other activists in calling for a ban on further exploration and reparations to help climate actio.

The Philippines is leveraging from biotechnology advancements to pay the way for efficient and affordable biofuel production. By tapping into its abundant natural resources and existing infrastructure for biodiesel and ethanol production, the country aims to solidify the position as a strategic renewable fuel provider. This advancement in biotechnology had not only created a new domestic bioenergy industry but it has reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil. It mitigates greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector, aligning with global efforts to develop cleaner and more sustainable energy resources.

Rassouk concludes by reinforcing the position of the Philippines as a strategic renewable fuel provider that is capitalizing on its natural resources and existing infrastructure for biodiesel and ethanol production.

In the Philippines, consumers have access to widely available fuel options like B1 (1 percent biodiesel and 99 percent petroleum diesel) and E10 (10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline). B1 has been offered at all service stations since 2002 while E10 is currently provided by all Seaoil stations. Ford Philippines has also established a plant that manufactures flexible fuel engines capable of running on up to 20 percent ethanol, with the aim of promoting the adoption of biofuels in the economy. Moreover, companies like Chemrez Inc have exported coconut-based biodiesel to Germany and several Asian markets, indicating the potential for surplus volumes to be available for exportation as biodiesel blend mandes increase, potentially shifting focus to the domestic market.

Rassouk believes that the Philippines will establish a new domestic bioenergy industry and overcome the challenges driven by rising fossil fuel prices and environmental concerns.

VR Tourism, which is typically experienced wearing a headset, enables a user to visit a digital twin of a historical site from the comfort of one’s own home. This appeals to the “Wannabe Travelers” segment who long to visit far away lands, but have neither the vacation time nor the budget. It also enables the “Location Curious” segment to digitally try out a far-away city before booking the plane tickets.

Regardless, this kind of VR experience raises international awareness of these sites and often encourages real-life visits.

Do you see AR tourism as something that should act independently from other aspects of cultural exploration, or do you feel it is better suited to enhancing multiple aspects of one's experience of a new place?

I view AR Tourism as a tool to be made available to visitors to use in whichever way they feel most comfortable. AR Tourism enables them to streamline their experience, highlighting only the points of most interest to them.

AR Tourism can also be a critical connector between multi-factor experiences and can connect local history with street mapping, cultural handicraft collecting with online communities and more.

By tying together all of these experiences with AR Tourism, the technology reinforces various aspects of culture into a multi-sensory experience.

Interoperability

One of the truly remarkable aspects of NFT gamification is its potential for interoperability across different games and platforms. NFTs can transcend individual game boundaries, allowing players to carry their digital assets across virtual worlds. Although this is a nascent concept yet, such cross-platform compatibility encourages exploration and collaborations between developers, giving rise to joined-up metaverses where players can have richer and more immersive gaming experiences within an ecosystem of interconnected games that share assets and experiences.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite the promising potential of NFT gamification, there are challenges to address that haven’t existed in traditional gamification mechanics. It goes without saying that ensuring the security of NFT wallets and protecting against fraud or theft is paramount. Traditional gamification rewards manifest in engaging collectibles which didn’t have much demand in the underworld of theft and pilferage, the act of putting a real-world value on NFT rewards opens wide the door of attractiveness to thieves and fraudsters.

Striking a balance between accessibility and exclusivity is another challenge, as NFTs risk alienating certain segments of the gaming community in a way that badges and leaderboards never did.

On a subtler note the environmental concerns related to blockchain technology and energy consumption must be mitigated through sustainable practices. EXPANDING HEALTHCARE

Assisting healthcare solutions in entering the market and expanding their global impact is no easy task. i-Expand’s Founder, Pilar Fernandez Hermida, gave Jake Graves some exclusive insights into the variety of challenges this endeavour entails.

Describe the key steps required when taking a product to market.

The process to take a product to market is the go-to-market strategy.

We use our own methodology. Initially, I looked around, but all frameworks were product-focused or based on lean methodologies that did not translate well in healthcare, where every market is different. We must tailor the GTM to every market and go where we should go instead of where we want to go.

That is why, when somebody asked me to put a workshop together, I created the skeleton of what later became the “Healthcare Go to Market Academy”- one of the first healthcare-focused commercial upskilling programmes. The methodology works for every company because it is based on questions, rather than answers. The better the question, the better the answer. The better the commercial plan will be through iteration.

Which products have challenged you the most?

20+ years gives plenty of battle stories to share. I will share a few tricky areas.

Big deals, especially national and regional deals are particularly challenging. Negotiations with public health systems can take years, yet, closing the deal and implementing it is the hardest part. Operational execution is always a challenge: even established companies struggle so I am always surprised to see how many startups go after those big deals on their own. There are two sales cycles: Pre-sales and After-sales. Very few companies think about what happens in the AFTER.

How does i-Expand mitigate risk for products and companies?

Our approach de-risks commercialisation by answering the two biggest questions any company faces:

1. How relevant is your solution for the customers? A lot of things are needed in healthcare, but most models will not be viable.

2. How viable is your business model? Focus on the channel and pricing fits. Any value proposition should always reflect on how you will de-risk those two factors above. Focus on the customer (the one who pays) and be on the money.

Ask the right questions to the market and mirror those needs.

What do you think the main issues are that plague most companies in this area?

Lack of commercial expertise, plain and simple. Founders are good at solving a problem for somebody else by launching a product. However, as entrepreneurs, their main problem is to find a way to sell that product. They often forget about that or simply do not know how to do it. From an overall market perspective, there is also a shortage of commercial experts (with a real sales track record).

Can a good market entry strategy compensate for any shortcomings an organisation or product has and vice-versa?

It depends on the solution and stage. First, your offering must do what it says on the tin, especially if we are talking about patientfacing solutions. But again, even if you have the best science, it will not sell by itself.

Overall, in my opinion, a company’s biggest differentiator - and competitive advantage - is not necessarily the product but its go-tomarket strategy. Especially if your area is crowded.

What area of the market is growing right now and what problems should new products be looking to solve?

These days it is all 5G (and soon 6G), an enhancement to the cloud, and - of course - about conversational computing (ChatGPT) and AI. The latter is attracting lots of funding and hype. Does this translate into revenues? While tech-enablers (supply chain platform plays such as Nvidia or Microsoft) are making a killing, I do not see techenabled solutions sharing the same luck. Then, when it comes to real market needs, I still see the old problems stubbornly lingering and even getting worse.

As an entrepreneur, I would focus on the messy and unsexy aspects the market overlooks.

What do you feel investors are most looking for when you bring a project to them?

One of Warren Buffett's most famous quotes is: “Only when the tide goes out do you learn who has been swimming naked.” Well, the tide has definitely receded. Most investors will want to see you are wearing a “business outfit”: a path to revenues and profitability. We are back to fundamentals.

As to how invasive the process will be, it will depend on the investor and the terms agreed. My most important advice? Select an investor that will add value to you (apart from funds): Do they understand your business, and ultimately, will they have your back? The wrong investor can make your life miserable and will derail you from your mission.

Finally, we should always remind founders that they should not forget their most vital investor: the customer. They will not ask for equity, term sheets, or anything else. Just for you to meet their needs, on their terms. The rest does not matter. Do not lose sight of your customers. You will rarely find a well-conceived viable business plan that does not attract funding.

Lapsi Health’s sound technology fills the gaps in the practice of auscultation and enables the acquisition and analysis of sound in a more objective way. This makes sound traceable and able to trend, and can be used as a continuous marker or data point for screening and diagnosis.

Examples of applications include monitoring asthmatic exacerbations, the ventilation of babies in neonatal care and monitoring the return of bowel motility in post-abdominal surgery patients. By using sound as an objective marker, Lapsi Health aims to eliminate subjectivity in medicine, specifically auscultation, and allow for more individualised and precise care.

How do you envision the timeline of Lapsi Health’s development progress, future usage and market engagement?

We plan to release our first device in the market between the end of this year and the beginning of next. We have already received positive feedback from physicians in several countries, and we are collecting information from our users to enhance the device’s performance before we begin the regulatory path.

Our vision is to close gaps in clinical medicine globally, starting with the FDA application in the United States, followed by Europe. Our ambition is big, and we believe our technology will have a tremendous impact on clinical work by decreasing administration time, enhancing efficiency, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Our plans for potential markets are ambitious, but tempered to be realistic, with an initial focus on the US. We’re targeting healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and paramedics. We’re planning to expand to Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East with our wearable technology. Before deciding where to enter first, we’ll assess markets based on behaviour, payment structures, and user base. We’ll have a concrete strategy in 2-3 years.

Our ultimate goal is to have a global impact on healthcare, and we’re confident that our technology can help close gaps in healthcare provision around the world.

How does Lapsi Health plan to register its medical devices with regulatory agencies? What impact will this goal have on the company’s development in the next two months?

Lapsi Health plans to launch its first device by the end of the year and is seeking Class ii FDA and CE Mark certifications.

The next two months will determine how quickly the company can obtain these certifications, which require final engineering and design. The company is focused on ensuring quality remains a top priority while testing and scaling up production. Release dates and further development of the technology will depend on the progress of certification and quality assurance.

Setting such ambitious goals comes with its fair share of challenges. Could you please share some of the challenges that you faced during the development of Lapsi Health Technology and how you overcame them?

One of the biggest challenges we faced was harmonising hardware and software development since there are few companies that do both in our area of digital exploitation and sound in medicine. We wanted to control the entire process to provide the right data points and analyse them in the right way.

We overcame this challenge by hiring experienced professionals like Toni Leinonen for hardware development and Anuj Dev for software development, aside from our incredibly knowledgeable founding team where Rodrigo Alvez leads as CTO, Seamus Holohan as COO and where we are privileged to have the technical and clinical mind of Diana van Stijn as Chief Medical Officer.

Another challenge was developing a medical strategy that makes sense and is investable. We are still navigating new challenges as we go through different stages of the company, such as fundraising and market changes. However, it has been a valuable experience that has made us better professionals.

Given your roles as a MedTech entrepreneur, visiting professor of digital health, and medical education ambassador for Medscape, how do you see medical education evolving in these sectors?

To implement new medical technologies in hospitals, it’s important to have healthcare providers willing and excited to pilot new projects. Technology literacy is important for both healthcare providers and patients.

CARING FOR HEALTHCARE

In this exclusive interview with Jake Graves, Michael Maylahn details co-founding Stasis Labs and his impassioned vision for a healthcare system that encourages innovation to prioritise patients and healthcare professionals.

In an intriguing insight, Michael began by detailing the key tenets of what he believes would be a well designed healthcare system. This would be a patient centric apparatus, with incentive models constructed to reward the timely delivery of quality care.

This is most certainly contrary to the majority of modern healthcare systems, as these reward executives, insurers, pharma and medtech, whose aims are very often unaligned with the interests of the patient. Additionally, this system ignores the requirements and support required for those providing healthcare to the patient.

He would then go on to highlight that there has been a shift away from this model with steps being made to provide “value based care”. A direction Michael feels is a positive one.

Michael then gave his purview on the different challenges facing various parts of the world based on their development. Interestingly he elucidated that he did not believe that the issues in any one area were inherently particular to that place. That across the world, the medical sector, at least at the highest levels, is being pressured by the factors and issues.

He explained that the true challenge is unpacking these problems, which is what requires a true versatility as attempting to solve them shows you the true scope and scale of the hurdles. He then gave some examples of how trying to solve a problem in the rest of the world with a western solution is oftentimes fitting a square peg into a round hole.

Firstly, he described the west’s legacy in healthcare, boasting a more prolonged investment in advanced innovations which began far earlier in comparison to perhaps all other areas of the world. This has come in the form of infrastructure, legislation and regulatory frameworks, contractual moats devised by large companies as well as in the perspective afforded to innovators.

Next he discussed the issue of risk index in relation to economics. How cultures are willing to take far larger risks if they have had little in the way of innovation, compared to those that have had a safety net in the form of basic access, that even the poorest in a certain

Lastly, Michael described how the skills required and education levels capable of teaching them are diverse and varied throughout the world and differ from place to place. “It’s important to consider how culture, socioeconomics, and geopolitical dynamics drive or hinder innovation”.

In the west there has been a culture of outdated hubris according to Michael, in the belief that the application currently in use is flawless and should be transferred wholly to other nation’s as a sort of template for success. He believes there will be a lot to learn from the new and multifarious innovations being propagated throughout the rest of the world.

By way of solution, Michael offers his belief in the creative application of technology, leveraging the power of connectivity to fill the gaps between various skills and lack of infrastructures. He mentions the power of automations and augmentation of humans which could resolve some economic struggles and increase the impact one can have as a mere individual.

He also focuses on regulation and how frameworks may be built through communication and collaboration between private and public partnerships can remove any issues or hindrances.

Shifting focus to Stasis Labs, Michael spoke of how he continues to innovate and wishes to create a more supportive ecosystem to encourage further innovations of the same nature across the verticals of physical and mental healthcare, green technologies, education and basic human needs.

His described the biggest test he has experienced in all of this was:

“Falling in love with the problem, not our product. Adapting and changing how we solve the problem based upon listening to customers, understanding what it takes to make a viable business, and adjusting to changes in market timing”

He builds on this by detailing the culture of ownership he has instilled in Stasis Labs.

OF DAO’S DAO 的崛起

With the UK National Health Service on its knees and the US health sector inaccessible to a sizeable portion of the population, Lea Hogg discusses the emergence of DAOs in the health sector with Dr Jane Thomason, metaverse thought leader and author of ‘’Blockchain for Global Social Change and Applied Ethics in a Digital World.”

DAOs govern many major DeFi applications, and several variants currently vie for recognition as the preferred model most likely to attract investors. Smart contracts lay the foundational rules, execute the agreed decisions, and at any point, proposals, voting, and even the code itself can be publicly audited. DAOs oversee the allocation of resources tied to projects they are associated with and ensure the continuing success of the project. Funds are generated through token issuance, where the protocol sells tokens to raise funds for the DAO treasury.

Healthcare-centric DAOs are mainly at the formative stages, so success metrics are inconclusive, but their focus and potential for good are exciting and possibly game-changing. The belief is that DAOs will increase access for smaller research and manufacturing institutions and help break into the oftenmonopolistic big pharma space.

For emerging health systems where health insurance is being scaled, there are obvious attractions in using a system with automated adjudication of claims, a reduced number of intermediaries and possibilities of reducing fraud. But none of these applications need a DAO, argues Dr Thomason.

Jane Thomason thinks it’s ‘’too early to know how big a community DAOs can attract, the level of funds they can raise and whether the DAO structure actually benefits as she points out how it is “possible to use blockchain affordances and smart contracts without a DAO’’.

There is also concern of risks when providing economic incentives such as governance tokens. This will encourage competitive and speculative behaviour leading to a centralized governance structure. Some predict that medical projects may become vulnerable to attacks because of excessive centralization and parties with a conflict of interest pushing through proposals that will be profitable

She explains that ‘’protocols started by using governance tokens as rewards for users participating in the network.” She adds that this can encourage competitive and speculative behaviour, leading to a “centralized governance structure since tokens slowly accumulate in a few hands’’.

Dr Thomason shared other concerns about projects being prone to vulnerability through attacks because of excessive centralization. Parties with a conflict of interest can push through proposals. Hacking, says Dr Thomason, is another worry. ‘’Even if there is a security hole in an initial code, its rectification cannot occur until the majority votes. While voting takes place, hackers can exploit a bug in the code’’ she warns.

Another issue is the legal status of a DAO. Who is to sue in the event of liquidating a tangible asset owned by the DAO? It is not unusual that users do not fully understand the governance of the projects they invest in and the risks they are taking. If a professional risk assessment is not carried out, “losing funds via a protocol error or a malicious attack puts the users’ funds at risk’ Dr Thomason remarks. There is also regulatory uncertainty surrounding DAOs. The Securities and Exchange Commission announced plans to create a new regulatory framework to clarify the legal status of DAOs and ensure they comply with existing securities laws. The question is whether regulation will de-risk investment or result in constraints on the original ambition.

There are concerns regarding privacy, security, risk management and governance, and complex problems to be resolved regarding the regulatory treatment of tokenized assets on the blockchain. The development of international standards is also required regarding terminology to enable the interoperability of blockchain with legacy systems and facilitate productive conversation between all stakeholders.

By definition, shared distributed ledgers have no specific location. Regarding jurisdiction and applicable law, territoriality and liability constitute a problem; each network node may be subject to different legal requirements, and no party may be ultimately responsible for the distributed ledgers and the information contained therein.

Blockchains are considered to be immutable. The tamper-proof aspect of blockchain clashes with the GDPR enshrined right for any EU citizen to have personal information stored on external databases deleted should they wish.

“Also at issue,” says Dr Thomason, “is the local recognition of native financial instruments (such as bonds) and inclusion in a blockchain of a deed declaring ownership or the existence of an

asset represents genuine proof of ownership, or the real existence of the asset is required’’.

DAO may change the future of healthcare as stakeholders such as patients, health institutions and doctors, researchers and insurance companies can participate as members of the DAO, and build on trust between the parties involved, promoting transparency. But Dr Thomason believes that this is still in an experimental stage. There is much to learn about DAOs and the medical community is risk averse. There needs to be some powerfully demonstrated use cases before it can become mainstream.

In addition, the user experience is poor. Most medical professionals do not have a blockchain wallet, and so far they have few incentives to set up a wallet. Dr Thomason points out that many applications for blockchain healthcare do not require a DAO, citing healthcare data infrastructure, electronic and patient health records, healthcare analytics, medical device and IoT security, identity, supply chain, and digital medicine and care delivery.

Could DAOs replace traditional healthcare insurance companies and help settle claims instantly, reduce frauds and cut costs? Dr Thomason argues that blockchain has the potential also to be used for the automated validation of claims, which may increase the efficiency and security of the payment process. The software can store encrypted patient identifiers, health plan information, and provider claims within a blockchain shared by payers and providers, enabling near real-time automatic claims processing, eligibility verification, and preauthorization.

Blockchain is a prime tool for the certification of digital data and identities. This could include health provider identities and may potentially be extended to include validated credentials. While many different tools can periodically authenticate the user, health regulators and financiers must ensure healthcare providers that claims are valid as this has become paramount to providers and payers.

There will no doubt be continued innovation in using DAOs in many aspects of healthcare. It will be essential to fully document how these are structured and consider their governance mechanisms and levels of success. In this way,the healthcare sector can learn how DAOs can add value.

Dr Thomason concludes that DAOs are a form of collective governance automated by code. “We need to see some solid demonstrations of their effectiveness first. There are many other forms of more analogue collective governance, like foundations and cooperatives, which may adopt some features of a DAO, yet retain some human elements’’.
