In many ways, although this issue is the last of the year, it’s also about a number of firsts. This November BLOCK will be distributed at Malta Week - a four-vertical event that brings together key complimentary brands, such as emerging tech, marketing affiliation, and gaming. It is for this reason that BLOCK magazine now also carries content geared towards our digital health and gaming brands - in fact, our cover story with Alexandre Tomic, discusses the healthcare wearables market and the technology driving it towards the mainstream. Read his interview on pages 22 to 29.

After listening to feedback from our readers, we’re also excited to announce that in 2022 we’re stepping up our game and publishing even more magazines. Each of our publications will now go out three times a year, bringing our count up to six. Our magazines travel with us - so expect to see them at upcoming events, with special reports and in-depth features tapping into each new market.

This is normally the point I ladle out thanks. Writing this editorial however, is bittersweet for me, because my thanks are tinged with goodbyes. This will be the last edition for our Creative Director Jessica and photographer Aleksey.

It’s hard to imagine an issue without them, their creativity and passion stamped so distinctively across each page that they have become an integral part of the SiGMA Group brand. Aesthetics aside, they have also been an integral part of my personal experience as editor. This has been a journey worth taking, and an experience that has been all the better for their companionship.

I am especially grateful to Jessica, her support has been invaluable, and I can say without reservation, that her design has been crucial to the success these issues have found amongst the industry. I wish them both tremendous happiness in whichever new path they choose to tread.

On that note, our next issue will see its subjects through new eyes - those of Robert Cuschieri - a fitting start to 2022, a year filled with fresh beginnings and a new outlook.

This time last year many were asking whether the event industry could survive the health pandemic. This year however, has been our busiest yet. November, normally a cold shoulder month in event circles, is all fired up for what promises to be the mother of all conferences.

This is the first time we’ve ever held three major expos in the same week and under the same roof. The benefits for cross pollination are huge, and we can’t wait to see this convergence of ideas, debate, and networking taking place. What better way to close off the year than by holding a week-long festival to celebrate the growth of our four verticals.

The alignment of our supershows this year are designed to allow investors to leverage the significant crossover potential for multi-faceted deals and to double down on opportunities to connect with some of the leading affiliates, policy makers and thought leaders in the industry.

WHAT IS UMANA’S VISION, BOTH FOR THE LONG-TERM AND THE SHORT-TERM?

Our vision is to design technologies with patients and medical professionals at heart. Our technologies provide real, tangible benefits to our clients, focused on understanding what people need, and working towards achieving that objective. It is in this context that we work hand-in-hand with international universities, medical institutions and top pharmaceutical companies, which establishes us as a pioneer in answering the growing demand for vital signs monitoring medical devices.

We are working with two of the largest pharma companies in the world, including Bayer, to develop our innovations further. These include the centralisation of our virtual care solutions, enhancing our ability to remotely monitor patients with a variety of conditions, including diabetes.

We also want to be at the forefront of innovative ways to provide for drug delivery, which can be a significant challenge for specific pockets of the population or for people living on the periphery or remote areas.

YOU WERE ACQUIRED BY GPI GROUP IN MAY OF LAST YEAR. ONE YEAR ON - HOW HAS THE PARTNERSHIP EVOLVED?

The partnership is evolving in a very positive manner, with a number of evident benefits at different levels. Firstly, the two companies brought different backgrounds and skill-sets to the table, creating a force of innovation in our field in which the sum is bigger than any of its parts.

For our growing company, the possibility of working handin-hand with a multinational leader in this field offers unparalleled benefits. GPI is a leading company in technology and services in the field of health, social care and public administration. This means that Umana can access industrial and technological wealth, as well as the transfer of knowledge that has positioned our company on a completely different level, thus strengthening our endeavours to grow further and achieve our ambitions.

In addition, GPI has an impressive portfolio spanning practically all continents around the globe, thereby potentially opening up significant opportunities to market our innovations beyond our shores.

YOUR EXPERIENCES IN ITALY HAVE PLAYED A KEY PART IN YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS THE COMPANY YOU ARE TODAY - CAN YOU SHARE THAT STORY?

While obviously the coronavirus pandemic is a tragedy which will have deep health and social ramifications, for Umana, it was a case of transforming a challenge into an opportunity. In early 2020 we all saw the stark, depressing images of over-crowded health facilities in Italy, as thousands of new cases flooded

wards. We acted as first responders, coming in with a solution that has saved lives by comprising the remote monitoring of infected patients who were sent to hospitals only when intensive care treatment was required.

While GPI had already developed a virtual care solution, we had just achieved certification of our T1 novel telemonitoring solution and that was a match that got things going between the two companies. This relationship has been gathering pace ever since. Today, Umana is a leader in telemedicine and runs projects on behalf of GPI in Malta, including running the system of health care electronic records, as well as a pilot project related to monitoring all children with Type 1 diabetes.

The pandemic has put incredible pressure on our healthcare system but at the same time we have seen the strength of the industry which responded quickly and efficiently, and with the collaboration of regulatory authorities, was able to bring innovations to the market in a faster way than we have seen. All this was achieved despite numerous disruptions, whether the new health care protocols, complex supply chain, remote work or the challenges to clinical trials.

History has often shown that a crisis brings out the best of humanity, it strengthens collaboration between professionals, it breaks down boundaries, allowing innovation – which is our raison d’etre, to flourish.

Many times, the stumbling blocks emerging companies like ours meet are a result of people thinking the old way, as if health was hospital-centred. Throughout Covid, people have experienced health in a different way, and they now see that this way is more convenient, practical and safe. This has already promoted a number of countries, including Italy, to enact digital health legislation to enhance such methodology.

We recognise that while trust is the cornerstone of any business, it is the primary driver of consumerbehaviour in the healthcare business. We appreciate that the timely delivery of our solutions can save lives, but at the same time we do so without compromising on quality and performance standards. In essence, Umana seeks the delicate compromise between doing the right thing and doing things right.

I started this company a year and a half ago, together with my partner Christian Duchow. Bio Arte merges two different worlds to create one holistic vision; mine, which concerns the microbiological and supplement production, while Christian focuses on the pharmaceutical side of things.

The idea behind the company is very simple, it’s based on the characterisation and clinical interpretation of the human provider. It is a collection of all the microorganisms living in us, and with us, and plays a crucial role in the balance of our health. The microbiota is a new

meta organ and this influences a lot of factors in our health, from digestion to production of vitamins and the regulation of immunity.

I met Christian in Malta purely by chance, it’s a great place for making connections. We approached Malta Enterprise, who helped us to find an industrial space to set up our laboratories. We also got involved in some international research projects through the help of Malta Enterprise. For us research is a must, and obviously it’s a very expensive tool for a company to have - but we strongly believe that

without investment in the research sector there will be no future.

WHAT KIND OF SERVICES AND PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER AT BIO ARTE - WHAT ADVANTAGES ARE THERE FOR DOCTORS AND PATIENTS?

We provide a full characterisation of the microbes residing in different parts of your body - particularly in the gut. Obviously to do only this is not enough, so we also link this to our database and control groups - and based on the different populations we can estimate the equilibrium. As soon as the equilibrium is interrupted, tipped towards a more inflammatory or weak environment - there will be severe consequences on your health.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO HEAR ABOUT IN 2022?

We currently are working on a big project on the characterisation of the nasal microflora in Covid patients. The outcome of a Covid infection is very difficult to predict today but there are elements that hint at why some people are asymptomatic and why some end up needing to be monitored in hospital. Over the next few years, with a proper diagnostic tool - which is what we have developed so far - we will be able to unlock key biomarkers to predict the outcome of a disease or to offer protection from a disease, starting from Covid and moving towards obesity and neurodegeneration.

Aggregating wearables is a lot like aggregating games - something that CEO and founder of Alea Gaming, Alexandre Tomic, has solid experience in. He is himself a keen advocate and early adopter of the technology, a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, so to speak, having worn health trackers for the past two years.

The average person today probably owns several different health tracking devices, he explains. Oura rings, Apple Watches, Fitbits. “When we first started looking into wearables we realised that while they may have their own way of doing things, essentially, they do the same thing. So, the question is, how can we take all this data and aggregate it into meaningful, useful information?”

The solution? Alea has decided to build their own wearable with its own aggregator dashboard - blending all these devices into one super tracker. They’re also partnering with a company called Valencell, which is providing the sensors for the device.

Health wearables have always been a bit trendy though haven’t they? Are people actually becoming more conscious about their health?

Alex is confident it has a future, especially as people become more invested in optimising the way their bodies function, and in taking a leading role in shaping their future. They are a new breed of hackers, using their body in the most effective way to intuitively achieve good health and increased longevity. Although, as he explains - this is not necessarily about living longer, but about living to an age where you can still function perfectly. “It’s a very interesting and effective technology. We need to live longer and we need to live better.”

He goes on to explain how having access to real time biofeedback can help you make more conscious decisions about your behaviour. One of the first things people notice, he says, is the effect your heart rate can have on your ability to go about your day-to-day life. Heavy alcohol consumption, for example, will have a clear and noticeable effect on your sleep quality - in the face of this kind of feedback, most people naturally start adjusting their behaviour.

“Imagine how much willpower it would take to make these changes if you didn’t have that information at your fingertips. When data can illustrate the situation in real time, the way your

body reacts to good and bad habits, it’s easier to make a good decision. When you know what’s happening you know what you need to do. You naturally become healthier because you can see the results every day.”

There’s also a growing demand for consumers to have more control over their data.

“I believe the road we’re going down is that more and more people are going to want access to their data - to exert more control over their health.”

Although you will still go to your doctor, he says, you can now take your dashboard to your appointment, you can pinpoint the exact moments symptoms occur - even something as mundane as anxiety-related palpitations can be anticipated and avoided. It’s a much more proactive approach.

“I think that many issues could be better solved through data and machine learning. There’s no need for a machine to spend years gaining medical experience, it doesn’t face the same limitationsbiometrical digitalisation can compute info and predict patterns in a way a human simply cannot. Even the most experienced and learned doctors have not always had the opportunity to have seen real life cases of rare diseases in their career, but machine learning has seen millions of cases - from day one.

It can pinpoint the start of an epidemic, gauge the physiological reaction of a population listening to a political speech, or measure the spread of viruses in a population in real time - and, if you want to go down an Orwellian path - happiness.

“Having access to software that analyses your data, which can then be processed by machine learning tools which can give you a recommended course of action to take - you’re going to be able to identify problems way before they become an issue. What if you could read your cholesterol levels, or neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine? Previously people would go to the doctor only after symptoms start to show - often a culmination of years of unchecked damage.”

Alex also believes wearables can help make good health more accessible to people facing economic and social disadvantages.

“Imagine having it in countries that are poor, wearables don’t cost a lot of money and they will increasingly cost less and less - you will be able to see the wellbeing of the population in real time. It’s a tech that should make health much more accessible.”

His passion for the subject is evident, shipping out over a 100 Oura rings to partners and staff, primarily because he strongly believes that it’s an ‘incredible technology’. In fact, the wellbeing of staff is at the forefront of this conversation - in a commendable move, the company is taking proactive steps to ensure the health of their employees is in peak condition.

The company will not have access to personal data he reassures me, leaving staff to privately manage the results themselves. It’s a sensitive point, because, as he says, it’s not just data, it’s biodata - which has a messy history with unethical mismanagement. However, they do have access to anonymous data, which helps them to measure the impact company initiatives are having on the wellbeing of employees.

They may enjoy doughnuts every day, he jokes, but ultimately the priority is to ‘make sure nothing you do at the office is going to harm themwhether it’s physical or mental.’

Over a year and a half ago they bought a hyperbaric chamber - Oxyhelp. It can fit up to four people and delivers twice the atmospheric pressure with 100% oxygen. ‘It is an amazing technology that allows you to feel refreshed, but valuable also for its use in hospitals in the treatment of serious diseases such as diabetes.’

It’s currently being housed in the new office they’re building - which they hope to move into in a few short months. Employees will also be able to make use of a sauna, enjoy good food and as stress free a working environment as possible.

“We are in an iGaming business where you face a very competitive field, we need to be sure we manage stress in a good way - because ultimately - working in a company is stressful.”

In fact, there are wearables that exist specifically for stress management and that are specifically done on a B2B level. Oura, for example, has a health platform that looks at stress factors and is only accessible to companies - helping them to manage the wellbeing of employees.

The Oura ring can also go as far as alerting staff to possible Covid symptoms. The potential here for companies is huge - unfortunately this is still a feature that is only available to companies enrolled in the health management platform and not to the general consumer.

“We are already digitally connected, but imagine what it will be like when we become biometrically unified. The level of knowledge we’ll have about the human race is going to be crazy.” This kind of B2B management of staff is one of many trends likely to emerge in the wearables market over the next few years. In terms of direct tech, we should see advances in glucose monitoring (using a PPG sensor) next year. Blood pressure, stress evaluation through different sensors, and at some point cholesterol, vitamin, and mineral profiles.

“To be honest though, we’re going slow”. Their measured approach will see testing start in Q2 of next year, when they hope to testrun a few wearables amongst close friends and colleagues.” I think we’ll have something to show mid to end next year,” he concludes.

was the aha moment for the healthcare industry - primary, secondary and tertiary care finally understood that digital is one of the pieces to the ever-growing healthcare problematic puzzle. Whilst it’s somewhat worrying that it took a global pandemic for this realisation, it is equally heartening to see that the innovation, implementation and funding have not been stifled but rather continued to accelerate at an incredible pace. Despite this, two key elements remain missing from the equation. The healthcare provider and the patient remain conspicuously missing from the formula that companies and institutions are employing to digitize healthcare, and that is troubling.

Having software developers without experience in healthcare delivery, knowledge of healthcare pathways or understanding of risks and safety netting building tools for doctors without their input is a recipe for disaster. Not only can these practices can be dangerous and may result in grievous harm but they will also reduce the likelihood of doctors not using these digital tools as they don’t integrate well into their routine.

The second ingredient is patients. Most of the budding health tech start-ups out there are aimed at the patient. It is not enough to onboard the correct disease expert within your company. The patient also needs to have a voice. First of all, whichever way you look at it, it is a good business decision.

After all, it is that same patient who will be using the product. Secondly, the concept of patient-centred care also extends to digital health as companies tout their products as being part of said care. Patient-centred care ensures that patients are involved in healthcare decisions that concern them which improves understanding, compliance, and ultimately outcomes thus improved healthcare quality.

So what do we make of all of this? Three points we want to drive home.

• Assemble a team with the appropriate skills. As with most other things in healthcare, a multi-disciplinary approach works best.

• Put the patient at the centre of your product. What’s unique to healthcare is that we all have one goal in mind - improving patient’s care. Use this to your advantage - involve relevant patient groups in your design processthey will be using it at the end of the day.

• Simplicity is the greatest virtue. Do not add things to your product just for the sake of adding them. Make sure that the functionality intersects with the user expectation to make the experience as straightforward as possible. You only need to look at one of the biggest companies in consumer tech to see that this formula works.

The above sentiments are what we had in mind in designing the upcoming Med-Tech World conference. We want the users, both healthcare professionals and patients to be at the centre of our discussions in line with our beliefs. Who better to introduce this new emerging tech than Alex Shah who has more than 20 years of experience in building, integrating and managing enterprises from concept through IPO.

Alex is the founder of the London Fund and, due to his expertise and thirst for innovation, has managed to build businesses that will impact the global economy.

For the past ten years the London Fund were responsible for six exits amounting to more than $1 billion dollars and the traditional merchant bank is constantly looking for interesting challenges, resulting in becoming a known quantity in the cannabis space.

Alex’s background in the cannabis industry is second to none. He was the first person to acquire several US patents for a cannabis company, built a cannabis tech company and sold it for $22.5 million in 22 months and was also the first cannabis tech CTO of a public listed company on NASDAQ.

Alex also just stepped down as CTO of Akenra (KERN: NASDAQ) and CEO of solo sciences, a platform that detects cannabis counterfeit, and is now building two very unique companies. These two companies, according to Alex, will solve major global issues in two different industries but they both focus on two sectors – AI and cannabis.

The reason that The London Fund and Alex are targeting the cannabis industry is due to it being a close knit community and those players who occupy high levels in the industry are able to come close to and understand those who are just merely consumers.

So what are the two projects in the pipeline that are set to change the global economy and solve modern day problems? The answer is Coupond and engin sciences incoporated.

COUPOND

The London Fund always identifies problems within a sector and use innovative ways to present a solution to overcome the barrier. One of the major problems felt worldwide is that of couponing, a lucrative business both in everyday industries and also in the cannabis sector. Coupons are the life and soul of brand promotion and there are a number of eye catching statistics that support this:

• 90%+ of consumers use coupons one way or another

• 60% love receiving digital coupons

• 31Billion coupons were redeemed back in 2019

• 68% believe digital coupons generate loyalty

However, the problem identified by Alex is that if you wish to make a deal the consumer must have a universal coupon that does not exist, I.e the consumer is told where to redeem it. Coupond will solve this problem by bringing back the marketing power to the manufacturers as consumers will be able to access offers anywhere. The team behind Coupond are responsible for more than $1B in cannabis sales at Eaze and built the foundation of modern category management, loyalty cards and digital coupons.

ENGIN SCIENCES INC

Companies are no longer employing workers but are now employing people who are participating in “gigs” or known as digital nomads. However, there is no platform for these gig workers to showcase a quantified profile. This has resulted in the birth of Engin 1.0 which will build a tech site favouring the gig worker. Engin will quantify who the workers are through a gamified process and collects a series of signals to build a quantified X Profile. The X Profile will combine 50+ hard/soft skills and participants will be able to add training and/or licence certificates. This new AI tech presents the perfect chance for the cannabis market as the industry continuously receives an influx of applications and businesses, more often than not, recruit the wrong candidate. Conventional recruitment just won’t do it for the cannabis sector especially due to the influx of applications once businesses reopen post-COVID19. The engin1.0 virtual talent management systems allows HR managers to gamify the job application process on any site, quickly evaluate applicants, engage with viable candidates and matches people to the jobs that best suit them.

It took us 70,000 deaths a year and over a trillion dollars in costs in the US to figure out there was something wrong with the whole opioids industry.

From misleading marketing campaigns, unscrupulous doctors and what can only be termed as a diabolical supply chain, the opioids industry did whatever it could to get patients hooked on this highly addictive product.

In 2018, health care providers across the US brought more than 191 million prescriptions for opioid pain medication. Despite guidelines to limit opioids as a first approach to managing most chronic pain, a study found primary care clinicians write 45% of all opioid prescriptions in the US.

This brings us to the phenomenon that was instrumental in unleashing the evil that we now know as pill mills. Typically operating as a last mile for an opioid manufacturer, usually in small towns - they became either an indiscriminately prescribing base, where opioids were stocked and shipped to various parts of the country, or a sort of an off-label drug-den where people would drive out to and buy the opioids they wanted. What this allowed for, was the skirting of regulationessentially making millions of people opioid addicts.

Opioids peddlers are in cahoots with unscrupulous doctors – and with absolutely no oversight were able to create a catastrophic set of events that has killed more people every year then car crashes, gun violence, or any other drugs in America.

Over the last year and a half city state and federal government have woken up to this and legal action has been taken - from criminal charges against doctors and clinics, rehabilitation facilities, and alternative pain medication.

Medical cannabis has been one of the ways to provide pain relief to over 90% of situations where opioids have been prescribed. There is a lot of euphoria around the medical cannabis industry – some reports suggest there is 40 to $45 billion worth of market size to be achieved by 2025.

With the emergence of medical cannabis for pain relief I feel we have a chance to do pain relief right. Being a medical product, it is critical that the medical profession is involved in dispensation. While not nearly as addictive or addictive at all, especially when compared to the opioid that they are looking to replace, it is still critical that they are responsibly dispensed.

While the topic of using the blockchain is not something new - in the case of cannabis it has found popularity in western markets as a “strain tracer”. However, the blockchain could play a much, much larger role in the responsible dispensation of medical cannabis. I will

share with you our own experience in India. India is no stranger to chronic pain. Hundreds of millions live everyday with pain and have often no way to deal with it. A lot of the opioid players banned elsewhere have made a beeline into India. A similar US type opioid crisis is looming in certain states of India with the same mix of unscrupulous clinics, off label sales and marketing push.

This was the reason why we decided to build Hempstreet. Our aim is to provide responsibly dispensed cannabis-based medication primarily aimed at alleviating the pain relief crisis that exists in India and stop in its tracks any sort of opioid crisis that may try to gain a foothold.

While we were not the first entrant1 into the medical cannabis industry in India, we are definitely the largest in terms of clinic footprint and by far the most sophisticated in terms of responsible dispensation. In an industry where fake e- prescriptions are rife and off label use is not uncommon, we have taken it upon ourselves to do this the right way.

Right from the onset we decided we’d have to build based on the learnings from what we have seen with the opioid crisis globally. Responsible dispensation has to be the absolute pillar of any sort of pain relief medication.

It is with this in mind that we have deployed right from the start a blockchain-based solution to be able to track our products right from raw material through the manufacturing process all the way through to our doctor network, to ensure that there are absolutely no pill mills and that our products are 100% responsibly dispensed. The idea is to make sure that this self-regulation insulates us from loose dispensation and becomes an industry standard.

As we scale this across our partner network of over 60,000 doctors, we hope that this deployment would be a case example for companies around the world and more importantly we will have a large impact in our mission to fight the pain relief crisis. The future is integrative and absolutely must be Patient First.

In conclusion I would say the blockchain has a tremendous role to play in the medical profession and the question we must all ask ourselves as members of the medical industry, are we really keeping it honest?

The immediate future for games and blockchain is very much in the “play to earn” category. This is a clear use case enabling disruption where blockchain technology trumps the existing tech. Through a play to earn mechanic, a player creates value through absolute ownership of assets.

Playing games and earning/winning valuable items is not new. It’s been around in the free to play gaming market for a while now. The differentiator that blockchain offers decentralisation, the asset earned by the player is owned by the player and can be traded P2P in a decentralised marketplace.

Looking at this in practice, the most popular play-to-earn game in blockchain right now is Axie Infinity. Players can “buy in” or “earn in” to the game through play. Axie Infinity has +2m players worldwide. Yet the phenomenon is that they’ve

opened up new income streams for many players, especially in markets like the Philippines and Venezuela, where many players are now earning more playing Axie than they through their occupations.

This enables game developers in the decentralised world to flip traditional thinking on its head by not solely focusing on driving value from players in the game but focusing on how the game can deliver value to players. I believe this mindset change will make blockchain an irresistible and disruptive force in gaming in years to come.

I would never say that slots are dull! If you like playing slots, there are some fantastic games and mechanics out there to enjoy playing. We decided that we didn’t want to compete in the slots arena. There’s already a huge amount of excellent content in a very mature and saturated market. We saw a new style of multiplayer to single outcome games, like crash, kicking off in the crypto space and decided to bring this and other formats to the regulated gaming world.

The games we produce are community-driven, highly engaging, yet very simple to understand. We do that on purpose to attract a new type of player into the regulated gaming space. So, if we can capture some of that anonymous, illegal, and unprotected player base into regulated operators, that’s a good thing for player protection.

Also, when it comes to the games themselves, our betting rounds are longer than slots, so we are not enabling players to bet more. One of the reasons our games do play longer is that we add gamification to create more of a community feel, focusing on collaboration and or competition. This is not aimed at driving higher losses or quicker play, just a more community-based experience, which many gamblers are looking for.

mechanics in the casual/skill-based gaming space will disrupt the market. We do not doubt that. We have a play to earn, NFT-based racing game in development right now. In contrast to much of what’s out there now, it will be aimed at a wider audience than the current crop of blockchain gamers. We’re developing a user experience that will give non-blockchain savvy players the opportunity to play, earn, own and trade decentralised assets. We’re also looking at the interoperability of our NFTs across more than a single game and we add more to our portfolio. Blockchain gaming

is a fascinating place to be right now, and we cannot wait to share the plans and concepts for launch in the coming weeks.

THE BLOCKCHAIN AND IGAMING INDUSTRY HAVE BEEN FLIRTING FOR A VERY LONG TIME, WHILE FUNFAIR IS ONE OF THE MAJOR MAKERS OF ACTUAL BRIDGES. WHAT ARE YOU PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE ON HOW THE SECTORS WILL INTERMINGLE?

There’s a clear use case for using blockchain in responsible gambling, KYC

and regulatory affairs. A real-time, open, distributed ledger of player transactions that regulators can interrogate as required could give immediate benefits to players, operators, and regulators.

There is potential for other blockchain use cases, like NFTs, but it’s not an immediate slam dunk like it is in casual gaming. I do not doubt that the benefits of blockchain tech will become part of the fabric of iGaming at some point in the coming years, but with high levels of regulation, it will be a slower process than lesser regulated areas.

I had been interested in the world of crypto for a while and learned that there is a vast lack of trust in something that is so advanced, powerful and which I believe is the future - cash is a dying trend.

This is how Koda Cryptocurrency first began back in May 2021, we wanted to build it around our core values, T.E.E. – Trust, Education, and Ease of Use. We are building a cross platform decentralised exchange and a never seen before staking model, rectifying the wrongs of previous tokens, and gaining back trust from the masses.

So, after seeing some obvious (and not so obvious) rug pulls and watching people get scammed out of their seed phrases, I wanted to do something about this, hence the creation of T.E.E.

TRUST - We do this by being as transparent as possible, including being open about mistakes we make and

rectifying them - therefore we are moving from V1 to V2 to fix the potential issues, burn all the excess tokens and make it better for everyone. This was based and acted on after we volunteered and paid Hashex for a full audit of our contract, V2 will be released this November!

EDUCATION - we have physical offices where we carry out sessions to educate people on how to trade Koda and other tokens safely. We will also help people research into a coin and show what we would look for to help educate them into make an informed decision when investing.

EASE (OF USE) - Crypto can be difficult at times to say the least. You find a project you want to invest in and you have your card there and just want to buy.

Then you have to work out how to deposit your fiat currency on centralised exchange, to transfer to a mainstream crypto (eg smart chain), send to an external wallet, navigate to a DEX like pancake swap, to link your wallet, find the right token address before finally swapping the token, not taking into account slippage rates and the amount of steps there are for potential errors! This is not attractive to the community, so we are working night and day with some incredibly skilled developers to simplify this process and make it as easy as one, two, three!

We feel it’s the lack of knowledge and understanding of crypto. It’s about trying to get people to understand that wealth is possible, knowledge is power and not to fear what they do not yet understand.

I’VE HEARD YOU HAVE AN AWESOME OFFICE SPACE, HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS TO IMPROVING RETENTION AMONGST EMPLOYEES?

Yes we do! It’s cool, comfortable, fun, and modern. But to be honest, I don’t think the style of the offices really matters for our employees as they know how good the project is and they know the direction of where we are going. It does help that we have a foosball table and an 8-pack gaming PC for staff to use when on breaks or after work!

It’s been absolutely incredible! Tim Draper and the team have been nothing short of invigorating and stimulating. We look forward to building a lasting, mutually beneficial relationship with Draper Associates and its wonderful people.

We plan on using the funds to take our product and operational capabilities to the next level. That means hiring the right developer and operations teams, and investing in the right tech, to meet a new standard for service delivery. We also plan on leveraging the funds to begin piloting some of our more impactful value add services. For too long, the logistics space has been highly fragmented - customers or shippers always needed to find multiple siloed services providers for every required action within their supply chain operations. We hope to address some of these barriers as well, by bridging the gap between separate but interdependent services.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF SHIPPING AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND BEYOND.

The future of supply chain is one rooted in total transparency, high speed, and maximum efficiency. Over the coming couple of years, we’ll start seeing some of these extraordinary experiments come to life and begin to revolutionise the industry at scale.

PASSION AND SUCCESS COME FROM THE MOST UNLIKELY PLACES, AND THIS STORY IS ONE OF THOSE. MOHAMMED CARRIM GANEY WAS JUST A KID WHEN HE BOUGHT HIS FIRST ANTMINER S7. HE SPOKE WITH JEREMY MICALLEF ABOUT HIS JOURNEY IN THE EMERGING TECH SPACE.

“Making crypto as simple as it should be is what I stand for,” he explained during our introductory call.

Mohammed Carrim Ganey has come a long way since mining crypto in his home, both in his business ventures and personal life. We can see this through the various organisations he set up and runs on a day-to-day basis.

True to the entrepreneur label, Moe has his fingers in many pies. His main focus is Curate, where he is the Co-Director, CFO and Blockchain Architect. Here he reconciled his passion for Blockchain by bridging the gap between emerging technology and traditional finance.

Moe described Curate as, “The only truly Gasless NFT marketplace that’s easy enough for your Grandad to use!”

Through his leadership, they are focusing on developing a proprietary and industry-leading blockchain called “X-Chain”, including having added designed and implemented an advanced payment flow for the Curate NFT app, and completely overlooked blockchain agnostic capabilities.

“The Metaverse is the future of the Internet,” Moe insisted, adding that X-Chain is “the future of blockchains, paving the way to instantaneous transactions and finality”.

Before this current venture, he founded and directed Jumeirah Capital, where he set up and managed a remote management VPN system built specifically for Bitmain Miners. Undoubtedly a nod and continuation from his introduction into mining in 2015 when he bought his first Antminer S7. Eventually, he grew to the point where he was receiving offers to sell, and even take the company public.

His passion took precedence over money, and he kept his baby close.

Through our Freeway platform and EU regulated brokerage, AuBit Prime, we are bridging traditional and digital finance to become the first and only asset management platform in the world that gives users more of the assets they own through the redistribution of fees and revenues.

AS THE FINTECH REVOLUTION SWEEPS ACROSS THE GLOBE, WHERE DO YOU SEE DUBAI STANDING AS A REGION?

Dubai for us is a truly special place. We consider Dubai as a small village and the community in this village has been very accommodating and receptive towards the blockchain technology expansion, not just in the region but across the globe.

Dubai, as it celebrates its Dubai Expo this year through March 2022, has been instrumental in highlighting major progress in the industry and will become, if not already, one of the iconic places to be for anything to do with the Blockchain Technology market.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done as far as licensing and legal structuring in the region for blockchain-based companies, but overall progress is heading towards a very bright future for the sector and for the people in the industry. This is one of the reasons why the Ruby Family will also be legally incorporated in Dubai.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOUR COMPANY CAN DO TO HELP SHAPE THE INDUSTRY?

The Ruby Family is currently fully engaged in the blockchain technology sector as a liquidity provider to one of the biggest decentralised exchanges in the market which is UNISWAP. This is our way of helping shape the industry as we see a real strong future in the decentralised financial sector.

We believe that we are assisting to create a bridge for ordinary people to slowly transition into the cryptocurrency industry. We are very grateful that our method has garnered an overwhelming support from the crypto community as well as from the traditional financial sector who’s looking to capitalise in this fast-growing industry.

ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY UPCOMING INTERESTING PROJECTS AT THE MOMENT?

Family Foundation platform, where 100% of the funds are allocated to the mission and 0% goes to management or personnel.

The foundation is looking to expand its initial allocated funds that can feed over 50 families daily which is in support of the gaming community in the blockchain sector. The foundation will also be releasing a series of NFT artwork showcasing our Ruby Ring worn by Royalties, UHNW individuals, influencers, ordinary individuals in the sector and children.

Secondly, we are developing a non-custodial platform for our liquidity pool protocol in addition to what we already have successfully. As a liquidity provider, we want to offer our liquidity partners options where they can choose to have full control over their digital assets and still have the benefit of receiving revenue through our very own smart contract layer integration with UNISWAP.

Third, the digitisation and fractionalisation of one of our real-world assets. Through our strong partnerships with other family offices, we plan to launch a platform of index highlighting real-word assets, precious metal, precious gemstones, etc. digitised and fractionalised with all the legal structures in place.

STORY OF STRONG LEADERSHIP

Mr. Oliver Marco La Rosa serves as the CEO at Globiance. In 2018, along with his wife, Irina La Rosa, and a small team of shareholders, Mr. La Rosa founded the Globiance project with the goal to merge the functionalities of a bank and a Cryptocurrency Exchange. Since then, the Globiance brand has grown noticeably. In 2019, the team launched their first licensed exchange in Estonia (Europe) and by the end of 2021, Globiance will have already launched over 9 legally operating platforms across the world including the US and Canada. By 2022, Globiance strives to become the most expanded exchange group in the world with a goal to serve everyone and connect all users on Globiance platforms irrespective of their location.

In recent times, the biggest challenge is around regulation. As an international firm with a goal to penetrate multiple markets worldwide, Globiance needs to comply with the laws and regulation in each region. GBEX - FINANCIAL FREEDOM GLOBALLY

In August 2021, Globiance launched its own token called GBEX which is based on XDC (XinFin Network) - a revolutionary protocol (thirdgeneration) that features:

On top of that, huge burn events are scheduled, which will decrease the supply by 60% over the next two years.

GLOBIANCE PLATFORM

It’s noteworthy that Globiance has fully updated their platform UI and have added multiple languages. They have also launched their new app for a better user experience on mobile devices. Moreover, Globiance DEX is being released in November and will be the first Decentralized Exchange based on XDC (XinFin Network). Globiance has also built a rapid XDC token deployment system for their exchange which enables them to become the launchpad for all XDC based tokens.

With an aim to revolutionise the banking and cryptocurrency industry, the launch of the GlobianceBANK is also on the cards and will most likely happen in Q1 of 2022. The main banking platform is almost ready and will be launched shortly, in order for clients to preregister and apply for first accounts as soon as the rest of the setup gets completed. The GlobianceBANK will offer users all of the features and convenience that are provided by a digital bank and also the ability to integrate the crypto exchange. Moreover, users will be able to trade securities and Security Tokens, as well as enjoy new DeFi products which Globiance is set to launch.

We founded Rubik this year to address the digital skills gap facing the iGaming industry. Our Academy was developed to invest in a new generation of talent and provide our clients with access to highly skilled, trained consultants who can help deliver tech projects from the outset.

We are tapping into a huge talent poolparticularly those with STEM backgrounds and from diverse populations which have traditionally been overlooked.

Our defining values are all around inclusion – inviting more diversity into iGaming and supporting new skills into industry - so that the rocket ship (that is currently iGaming) can continue to accelerate.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN OPPORTUNITY AND TALENT?

The crossroads between opportunity and talent is where industry, higher education and government have let young people down. As a bridge our Academy is investing in those with a high degree of analytical capability, but not necessarily previous coding experience. Take the story of Nafisa - one of our Rubik Consultants – she had an impressive Physics background with all the raw talent but lacked coding experience. Through our Academy, Nafisa shot up the learning curve and is now contributing as well as those with programming experience.

HOW HAS THE RECENT HEALTH CRISIS CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE WANT TO WORK - PARTICULARLY FOR THE GAMING AND EMERGING TECH SECTOR?

My view is that the pandemic has provided an opportunity to redefine the ‘rules of work’. I’ve spoken with many companies over the years who’ve held onto their office culture -usually because those at the top do not trust their employees. There is now ample evidence to demonstrate that is simply a falsehood. By giving power to your employees, you will allow them to be more effective in the roles and become more productive. Flexible work environments allow you to tap into a wider talent pool, increase the diversity and inclusion of your firm.

WHEN IT COMES TO RECRUITMENT, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MAIN STUMBLING BLOCKS GAMING AND TECH COMPANIES ARE FACING AT THE MOMENT?

The European tech sector has grown over 1,000% in recent years and there are over one million vacancies. When you talk about traditional recruitment there’s a fundamental problem because you’re simply not increasing the talent pool. This approach creates a ‘merry-go-round’ which drives the cost to hire and employ up. Further, the Gaming industry specifically has suffered historically from an image and a responsibility problem.

At Rubik Talent we are presenting the iGaming industry to young groups of talented people who are keen to learn about this fastpaced, technologically advanced industry. Furthermore, we are equipping this diverse population with skills including Full Stack Software Development, UX/UI and Data Engineering to increase the talent pool and fill the digital skills gap.

WHY DOES NEUROTHINK STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?

Brian: In addition to being radically accessible we have a unique and efficient way of virtualizing and then fractionalizing access to GPU compute power, which a couple of years ago didn’t even exist. For many years, companies have been fractionalizing CPUs. Now we have the ability, through partnerships and a complicated software stack, to be able to fractionalize the GPU’s, which is a game changer in this space.

Charles: The access to GPU servers that neurothink offers comes from building out the leading-edge technology with our partnerships. Our real differentiator has been our ability to bring together the right team to figure out how to unlock this type of technology. Staying in one environment and being able to seamlessly transition your work from an unlimited development environment to a powerful by the minute training environment requires a lot of development and orchestration on the back-end. This has not been done before in this space.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “RADICALLY ACCESSIBLE”?

Brian: What we mean by “Radically Accessible” refers to how quickly and frictionless a data scientist can spin a project, select your required compute resource, and start to train your model. To start working in neurothink, you simply access the platform through the browser with no need to download any clients or libraries and no need to jump between the command line and GUI. Once signed in, you can start working on your model within minutes, not hours of trying to figure out how to configure your environment. And if you prefer to work from the command line, we provide that as well.

Charles: Beyond being able to stay in one environment - from selecting a dataset and model to reviewing the trained result, we have built in experiment management to help you get to your best result very quickly, the interface helps guide less experienced data scientists to learn about and work with data and models, and finally we are working with partners to offer (in the future) ways to test and explain their models because machine learning can solve problems very differently than humans think about them.

NOW THAT NEUROTHINK HAS EMERGED FROM STEALTH, WHAT ARE YOU PLANS FOR THE NEXT TWO QUARTERS?

Brian: This fall we plan to roll it out to university students who will test and use the platform in their classes. We have made some amazing connections with some of the country’s top universities, bringing on students both as interns and as advisors. Sometime in early 2022 we will be doing our commercial release to individual data scientists and finally corporate teams of data scientists and groups of laboratory researchers.

Charles: Even though our platform is not officially live we are making use of our 4 petaflops of available resources. We already have partnerships out in the medical industry, non-profit space, and data at the edge. We are very excited to see the launch of ocean exploration that requires terabytes of data a day to be collected and turned into models onboard these unmanned submarines to categorize what they see. This project can be used to more rapidly build out green energy along the coast-line or monitor greenhouse gas absorption in the ocean.

WHY DID NEUROTHINK INVEST IN BUILDING THE ENTIRE ENVIRONMENT FROM HARDWARE TO THE USER EXPERIENCE?

Brian: It is still difficult and costly to make and understand these models, and the combination of all those resources has

In the medical space, we are also very interested in pushing models into the hands of doctors (Oncologists and Radiologists for example) who can be assisted by prediction on CT images, but they can also use their years of unique and nuanced feedback to improve the very models they are using which makes the models more helpful. We delivered a demo of this concept to a cancer center in September and will be speaking at a MedTech World this November in Malta. Our vision is to be involved in projects that will help improve the world.

Alongside Director, Joshua Ellul, four academics, Dr. Mireille Caruana, Dr. Ioannis Revolidis, Dr. Denisa Kera, and Dr. Ian Cassar, share their perspective on the Multidisciplinary Masters in Blockchain and DLT currently being offered at the University of Malta.

Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies and all things DLT are challenging various professions and facets of social structures. Many challenges exist for the successful adoption of the technology from legal, business, financial, and a technical point of view and similarly solutions are typically proposed from isolated legal, technical, and business silos. Such solutions tend to leave gaps between the different perspectives - and gaps cannot be afforded when so much is at stake.

The Centre for DLT at the University of Malta was set up to fill such gaps by offering a Multidisciplinary Masters in Blockchain and DLT that enables students to gain literacy in the various disciplines whilst also supports students to dig deeper within their area of specialisation - be it Computer Science or ICT, Business and Finance, or Law and Regulation.

Law is a traditional mechanism of trust. Social relationships operate upon the premise that actors behave irrationally, and the law shall make sure that mechanisms are in place so that social peace is guaranteed. While principles of law seem to be based on objective grounds, the application of the law is entrusted to institutions that can be tampered with. Laws are made by humans, observed, and applied by humans to regulate humans. In this sequence of events, the possibility of irregular behaviour in any block of the institutional chain of the law is high. Such irregular behaviour can quickly lead to a lack of trust.

Now, blockchain is the new trust architecture. It promises to create trust where traditional institutions fail to do so - a very attractive premise from a legal point of view. Yet it poses several questions: can blockchain be successful where traditional trust institutions have failed? What can the law learn from the blockchain? Can the law enable blockchainbased applications, or will it be an obstacle in realizing the potential of blockchain? These are some core legal questions that we discuss across the many different activities within the Centre for DLT, while observing the development of blockchain law as it happens.

I coordinate modules on policy-related aspects, emerging creative industries and art, and undertake research on regulatory sandboxes and novel models for stakeholder and public engagement. Design and art with a hands-on approach, along with collaboration and prototyping foster an environment that facilitates ease of absorption - therefore we adopt a design methods approach (UX, service design, participatory design, design fiction) to implement ethical and regulatory guidelines into technical infrastructure, and to support decision-making through prototyping. A blockchain future needs to become more inclusive not only with the promises of decentralization but also better integration with existing institutions and culture.

Of course, being a technology, blockchain fundamentals are a must. You cannot regulate something you do not understand, and neither can you establish a business or economic framework without having knowledge of both the internal and external implications of the technology. For non-technical students we introduce various aspects of the technology and an overview of how it works, as well as delve into smart contract coding, whilst for the computer science/ICT students we delve deepe.g. by building a blockchain from scratch, and undertaking verification techniques on smart contracts amongst other aspects.

From the perspective of the Business and Finance Stream, in which I coordinate the Applied Economics and Tokenomics module, I find that students benefit greatly from being exposed to the other technical, legal and regulatory disciplines. This further enhances their understanding of the possible applications and the underlying challenges surrounding the use of DLT within the area of Business and Finance, and indeed the economy as a whole.

Blockchain has the potential to transform the functioning of a wide range of economic sectors. Its key features can increase transparency and traceability of goods, data and financial assets, facilitate market access and improve efficiency of transactions. Fulfilling blockchain’s potential, however, depends on a policy environment that allows innovation and experimentation, while balancing the risks of misuse.

IS WALLEX REALLY SAFER THAN A TRADITIONAL BANK? BOTH FROM A PRIVATE PERSPECTIVE AS WELL AS ECONOMICALLY?

Wallex is as safe as a traditional bank, as we have the same capital obligations and the activity is supervised by a central bank. Additionally, regarding the obligations a traditional bank has anyway, we have some of the best implemented features for asset protection, compliance and fraud detection due to our enhanced standards for AML and compliance.

One of the reasons we are safe from many different perspectives is also that we do not manage any cash funds. All of our services have specific mechanisms for protections – amongst them are crypto theft insurance for each individual wallet, safeguarding accounts for fiat funds and multiple security mechanisms for the users.

We are constantly reevaluating our system and services and implement additional measures in order to be on top of the market.

FINANCIAL OPERATIONS ON A GLOBAL SCALE MUST BE A LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARE, IS IT NOT? HOW IS WALLEX MANAGING MULTINATIONAL COMPLIANCE?

On the contrary, multinational and cross border transfers are what we essentially do, both for fiat transfers and for crypto transfers, and we are well prepared. In terms of compliance, it is much easier to manage our infrastructure when we are entirely digital, as opposed to a traditional bank which has physical presence and thus has to manage many more requirements.

Wallex additionally has a specific licensed entity for different countries, which provides services to the according market.

That’s simple - the change has been that money is handled from the physical wallet, to the smart phone. One thing that has changed is that now we live in a faster and borderless financial system, and we have passed from a physical management of the money, to fully digital.

For sure the fiat currencies will not die, at least not in the next 10-15 years. They have been around for a long time and are already established in many ways. On the other side though, I am confident that the crypto currencies are on the way to establishing themselves as a separate payment method, as their benefits are numerous and it’s a system which develops at the speed of the population’s needs. Change starts with stable coins, which are the middle ground between fiat and volatile crypto currencies.

THE MALTA DIGITAL INNOVATION AUTHORITY IS A REGULATOR, YET MANY DO NOT UNDERSTAND ITS ROLE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MDIA?

The MDIA is a technology focused regulator. Whilst I could say that it is a technology regulator, the MDIA does not mandate that certain guidelines and rules must be followed across the board.

Rather, the MDIA provides a technology regulatory framework which serves two purposes: (i) to support other lead authorities and where technology assurances are required such other authorities can mandate MDIA’s regulatory framework (for example the MFSA for certain operations require that an MDIA System Audit must be undertaken); and

(ii) it serves as a voluntary ‘stamp of approval’ for operators seeking to build trust with stakeholders that may find solace through

guarantees provided within legislation and a national authority’s oversight.

The Authority started by implementing a system audit and certification framework adequate for assurances required with respect to cryptocurrency related activities which make use of Blockchain, DLT and smart contracts, and further widened the regime to include safety-critical systems and specific guidelines for Artificial Intelligence.

WHILE REGULATION IS MDIA’S PRIMARY ROLE, HOW CAN THE AUTHORITY AID IN ATTRACTING INVESTMENT INTO THE COUNTRY?

Whilst the MDIA’s system audit and certification framework may be of interest to a number of technology companies, we always knew that the framework must support start-ups and smaller operations.

Therefore, we put in place the Technology Assurance Sandbox (TAS) which aims to support and facilitate start-ups and smaller operations to grow and scale up towards achieving the levels of assurances needed to onboard investors and consumers.

The TAS will serve as a suitable regulatory tool to onboard and attract companies specifically seeking to build trust with their stakeholders including for example Oracles in the DeFi space, Non-Fungible Token service providers, and other smart contract based operations. Furthermore, the TAS provides the Authority with a flexible regulatory tool allowing for it to quickly adapt to international regulation requirements such as that which will be required with respect to EU’s Digital Operational Resilience Act which is part of the European Commission’s wider Digital Financial Strategy, and the Artificial Intelligence Act.

Being able to quickly react will allow Malta to be in a position to attract such companies seeking to align with regulatory requirements early on.

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP IN THE FUTURE OF TECH REGULATION IN MALTA AND BEYOND?

Well, we are still very early on. The MDIA is the first of its kind worldwide and we are now seeing calls and directions towards other jurisdictions to set up similar frameworks - so we are indeed already ahead of the game, and whilst it is great to be ahead we need to make sure that we keep sight of where others are going to ensure that we remain relevant and can align with other jurisdictions.

In the immediate future, the MDIA is undertaking work to streamline the regulatory framework so that it can easily support different technologies and sectors in line with preparation for EU’s upcoming Artificial Intelligence, Digital Operational Resilience and Cybersecurity related regulation.

With the introduction of the Technology Assurance Sandbox, we expanded the regime to further support start-ups, smaller operations, and less risky activities, yet we would still like to investigate how to provide other light-weight assurances. We will continuously monitor the framework in aim of minimising regulatory burdens.

On the topic of regulatory burdens, the Authority should head towards a future that embraces technology to automate regulatory requirements through RegTech. This will be a continuous journey to implement both new types of systems as well as regulatory tools to support such automation in aim of minimising both regulator and regulated entity operational overheads - whilst at the same time ensuring the same levels of assurances.

One such way to achieve this is through decentralisation. For example, smart contract code is guaranteed to do exactly what it is written to do, and if it handles an operation that typically requires regulatory oversight, then it should be possible to deregulate such oversight - since if the code is written correctly it will continue to do what it is written to do, and checking it would be superfluous. Therefore, the Authority should investigate such future potential avenues for regulatory automation and deregulation mechanisms that can still provide the same level of assurances.
