37th National President Thomas Morgan And The Donor Issue
Spring 201 2014
Reflections
Morgan is Man of the Year Dateline: Fall 1985 Thomas C. Morgan of the Phi Chapter at Southeastern Louisiana State University is the 1985 recipient of the Ellsworth C. Dent “Man of the Year” award. The Dent Award is the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate member of the Fraternity. The presentation was made at the Sigma Tau Gamma annual awards banquet on Saturday, August 24 in Wagoner, Oklahoma. Brother Morgan, an Amite, Louisiana native, served an unprecedented two terms as Student Government President and ran unopposed his second term of office. While administrator of the SGA he initiated numerous programs for a betterment of student life at SLU. He also represented his fellow students from all Louisiana state colleges and universities while serving as the only student trustee on the Louisiana State Universities and Colleges Board of Trustees. A pre-law major, Morgan has maintained an excellent academic record while serving his school and his chapter. In his chapter, Tom has served in nearly every capacity from parliamentarian to his current position as president. He also served the Fraternity as the chairman of the Constitution and Laws Committee at the 31st Grand Chapter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Read more about the achievements of Tom Morgan on Page 6.

Departments Reflections..................................................... 2 Foundation News .......................................... 3 Chapter News ................................................ 4 In this issue we recognize some of the most important brothers in Sigma Tau Gamma, our donors. So, how did we put their dollars to work? Earl A. Webb Academy: $25,000 in grants awarded for this three day program that professionally trains our new chapter presidents. The grant supports travel, lodging and meal expenses in addition to programming. This is important because every chapter, regardless of its financial circumstance, can send its president. Scholarships: Over $16,500 in scholarships are presented each year with nearly 50 undergraduate members receiveing one. Some scholarships are based on academic performance while others are based on leadership and involvement performance. Sigma Tau Gamma is about growing interpersonal skills. Our scholarship program reflects that objective. Chapter alumni associations help direct our scholarships through Chapter Heritage Funds. A Chapter Heritage Fund is a Foundation account restricted to the support of a specific chapter. Donors may designate their gifts to their Chapter Heritage Fund. Program Participation Grants: With over $7,000 awarded, these grants help chapters who are in need of assistance in attending leadership development programs. These programs occur at regional conclaves and national conventions. They necessarily involve travel, lodging and meal costs. Undergraduates may apply for a grant for up to half of these

Sigma Tau Gamma also supports the participation of our emerging leaders in the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute. This program, offered by the NIC with multiples sessions through the summer, draws top quality men and women from campuses across the nation. Feature Story
Thomas C. Morgan 37th National President
“We choose to go to the moon . . . and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” -- President John F. Kennedy (1962).
In August 2012, at the 45th Grand Chapter in Washington D.C., Thomas C. Morgan, Phi ’85, claimed his spot in our Fraternity’s history as 37th National President. At the time of his election, Morgan had a record of more than 30 years of chapter, regional, and national volunteer service. Truly transformational changes have occurred during Morgan’s term. Sigma Tau Gamma has chartered seven chapters, initiated close to 2,000 members, and increased annual revenue to over $1 million during Morgan’s term. Morgan championed the adoption of Special Olympics as our national philanthropy. He will formally sign a partnership agreement between Sigma Tau Gamma and Special Olympics at the upcoming Grand Chapter.
we learn and grow. To me that is what this entire Fraternity experience is all about. I know I was not the perfect chapter or national president. But, by taking on that challenge, I feel I’m a better man for it. I’ve learned and grown in the job. Whether you are young or old, by throwing yourself into the Fraternity, you will be better for the experience. SE: Do any brothers come to mind that have influenced your involvement in Sigma Tau Gamma? TM: Felix Lache (Phi Hon.) helped me get my first job outside of college, working for Thomas H. Hudson, president pro-tem of the Louisiana Senate. When Hudson lost the election, I went back to school to get
Morgan sat down with the editor of The SAGA to reflect on his two years in office and his vision for the future of Sigma Tau Gamma. SAGA Editor: Your leadership growth began when you were the Phi Chapter President, a two-term SGA President and the 1985 Ellsworth C. Dent “Man of the Year.” How was collegiate leadership important to your success today? Tom Morgan: At every stage of our lives we should be growing. When we take on responsibilities and obligations, we face challenges. Sometimes we make mistakes and not the best decisions. From that

an accounting degree and sit for the CPA exam. Ed Grady (Phi ’51) then helped me continue my career at an international public accounting firm in New Orleans. He gave me the advice to become a taxman and this advice turned out to be the underpinning of my career. These two brothers helped me have a strong start to my career and were mentors to me for years!
in support of Chris during that time. After the end came we talked about our memories with his family; the things he did, antics he pulled, and the funny jokes he told and we remembered the sparkle in his eyes. And, as miserable as we were, we began to laugh. In the midst of this horrific situation, we were able to lift one another’ spirit and laugh together. It is something I’ll never forget as long as I live.
34th National President Chris Mauer, Phi ’91, my little brother from Phi Chapter, was a true friend and brother during a challenging part of my personal life. Most people know that I am gay and have been legally married in Canada to my husband of 17 years, David Wright. When I came out at 30, Chris was the first person I came out to. He stood by and supported me. He knew I was the same guy who’d been his friend and brother all these years. That meant the world to me! And for that, I will always cherish his memory.
SE: You’ll take the past president position in August at the Bernier Grand Chapter and complete your time as the 37th National President. What would you say has been the highlight of your presidency the past two years?
When he passed away due to a fire in his home on Christmas Eve 2008, it was then that brotherhood of Phi Chapter came together. We assisted the Mauer family through this difficult time by just letting them know we were standing there with them. Chris was in the hospital for over five weeks. We joined his family

TM: Having the chance to spend time with so many fantastic undergraduates and young alumni through my travels. During this term I’ve traveled nearly 65,000 miles for Sig Tau! It is inspiring for me to see all these young men so excited about our Fraternity. It has kept me encouraged and motivated during the difficult and challenging times of being president. It makes me optimistic and hopeful about the future of our Fraternity knowing that these are the men that will be leading Sigma Tau Gamma in the future. (continued on next page)

Feature Story benefit of this approach in the cash flow that will allow us to better support these new groups as well as our existing chapters. This expansion and growth is good for everyone! The next thing that I see as a top priority is a national approach to supporting chapter housing. It is a critical component of us becoming one of the great Fraternities and I see it as the “part B” to our expansion efforts. It will give us the credibility to move onto the larger campuses and it’s something we should be doing for all our existing and legacy chapters as well. That is why I’m calling for the establishment of the National Housing Corporation. It is now time to get started! Richard Hargindeguy, John Heiman and Tom Morgan at the 44th Grand Chapter in 2010. SE: What were your top priorities as the chief elected officer of the Fraternity? TM: When my term started, I focused on things like strategic planning, the Foundation, judicial process and risk management as important topics. But, I realized as my term unfolded, that the president must focus beyond specific or narrow issues and must think about the big picture. Here are my “big picture” priorities that to me are all interrelated with each other. I wanted to promote the notion that there is ONE Sigma Tau Gamma. The reason I see this as important is because of the cultural implications of adding chapters in very different regions of the country, and because of the generational transition occurring in the organization keenly illustrated by the retirement of our CEO of over 41 years. Something I unwaveringly support is our continued expansion and growth. Our Fraternity can now boast that our flag is planted from coast to coast! Establishing chapters at universities with vibrant Greek systems with high quality men will keep us strong into the future. We are already seeing the
The last thing is a focus on alumni involvement. It is a foundational piece for all of this. It is from our alumni that we will recruit the chapter advisors and regional volunteers to support our chapters. But, we should remember that we are a collegiate Fraternity. We aren’t alumni for the sake of being alumni, but our focus should on the college men. We throw around the jingle “Sig Tau for Life!” But, what meaning does it really have? We must work at it. That’s why I’m promoting the establishment of a National Alumni Association for the purpose of enriching our alumni experience and supporting our colligate chapters. SE: As you reflect on your 35 years as a brother of Sigma Tau Gamma, what would you hope to leave as your overall impression on the Fraternity? TM: That we care about more than just ourselves. One of my proudest accomplishments serving on the Board was spearheading the adoption of Special Olympics as our national philanthropy. These athletes inspire us! What better way to serve than to do it for those who have a greater need than we and are so worthy? We exist for the benefit of our Fraternity, college, community and country. Our service to others defines our character both individually and as an organization.
