The City of Santa Clarita’s annual Concerts in the Park series, presented by Logix Federal Credit Union, traditionally takes place every Saturday night throughout the months of July and August. These free events, which were voted “Best Community Event” by The Signal’s readers, feature some of the nation’s top tribute bands. The concerts are held at the beautiful Central Park and are free for all to attend.Here are some fun facts about the Concerts in the Parks that you may not know: • 2019 marked the 30th year of Concerts in the Park. • Prior to being at Central Park, Concerts in the Park rotated through various parks throughout Santa Clarita. • It is estimated that total attendance in 2019 exceeded 48,000 attendees, an average of more than 6,000 per concert. • The Concerts in the Park stage takes three days to assemble and is left up in Central Park throughout the summer. • More than 100 bands applied to play at Concerts in the Park in 2019. • It takes more than 20 staff hours for the four-person selection committee to review all the bands before choosing the final eight bands that will perform. • Staff begins setting up for each concert at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishes cleanup around 11:00 p.m.

EXPLAINING POPULAR BEER STYLES The explosion of the craft brewing industry, which the Brewers Association notes experienced a 5 percent growth in 2017, ensures that just about anyone can find a beer that suits his or her palate. Beers are often placed into one of two categories, ales and lagers, though the difference between beers within each category is significant. Craft beer novices or those who simply need a refresher course on their refreshments may benefit from studying up on these popular beer styles. Ales are a type of beer brewed with top-fermenting yeast, which is often referred to as ale yeast. One of two types of yeast used in brewing, topfermenting yeast is unable to ferment some sugars. Because of that, beers made with top-fermenting yeast may have a sweet flavor. Beers made with top-fermenting yeasts can tolerate high-alcohol concentrations, so ales may have a high alcohol by volume, or ABV.

Stouts also are made with top fermenting yeast, placing them in the ale category, though they are not as sweet as ales. Stouts, including the popular Irish stout Guinness, tend to feature creamy heads. A dark, coffee-like character also is common in many stouts, and that can be traced to the use of un-malted roasted barley during their production.

Porters Similar to stouts, porters are made with top-fermenting yeast. Porters are brewed with roasted malt, setting them apart from stouts. Porters are dark, and many are described as producing flavors of chocolate, coffee and caramel.

Lagers Lagers are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast and generally feature a lower ABV and lighter color than ales. Examples of American lagers include Budweiser and Coors, though many craft brewers also produce lagers. Dark lagers are malty and smooth, and such beers typically have a higher ABV than more traditional lagers. Craft breweries produce a variety of styles of beer, and those new to the craft beer scene should know that many craft breweries produce their own ales, stouts, porters, and lagers. When visiting a craft brewery for the first time, men and women may want to order a flight, which is a selection of the various beers brewed by a particular brewer, with each beer typically served in a four-ounce glass. SLATER’S 50/50 When longtime local business owner Homayoun Daryani decided to bring Slater’s 50/50, a restaurant known for its burgers, bacon and beer, to Westfield Valencia Town Center, he never expected a pandemic would completely halt his progress mere weeks before reopening. “We were supposed to open in March, so we had our Yelp, social media and phone number already set up,” Daryani said, “and I would get phone calls every day, asking if we’re open yet.” “The training for a new restaurant is challenging alone, but the training amongst COVID modifications was just another wrench,” added Ernie Romo, chief operating officer at Slater’s. Daryani has had a long career in the SCV, first running an international farmers’ market in Saugus for a few years, then opening the Persia Lounge & Restaurant, which he had for 15 years before converting it into a catering business. Last year, when he decided to bring Slater’s to Santa Clarita, he had a vision for what it would become, making it perfect for SCV residents, who he knows to be both very community- and family-oriented. “I raised both of my kids here, and I know Santa Clarita residents are all outgoing, and big family people, so I want them all to feel welcome coming here,” Daryani said. “All of my employees are local. I want this to be a place people can come enjoy themselves.” “Obviously, the three pillars of who we are: beers, burgers and bacon, so we’ll have 52 taps filled with micro-craft beers,” Romo added. “About 80% of them will be local to the area to build that connection with the local community.” Along with the bar, the restaurant is also equipped with rows of self-pour beer taps, both inside and on one of two outdoor patios, giving customers the opportunity to pour tastes and full pints themselves. “Every, single one will be a different beer, and we’re going to have cocktails and wine on there, too,” Romo said. “We really want it to be an exciting, adventurous way for people to learn about beer. So we’re excited, considering we go through so many different types of beer, (so) it’s not a stagnant beer list.” After being carded, customers receive a card with ounces, which will then allow them to pick and pour their own beer, however much they’d like and whenever they need a refill. At 8,000 square feet, this is one of Slater’s biggest locations, which combined with the restaurant’s location, makes Daryani confident for the opening. “Although it is not the perfect timing, we have the best location that could be, so we are very hopeful,” he said. Slater’s 50/50 is set to open Thursday and is located at Westfield Valencia Town Center in the former Sisley space, at 24201 Valencia Blvd., No. 101. We’re going to do everything in our power to put lives back together as soon as possible.” The local Paul Davis team is maintaining strict safety protocols during the process. “We’re ensuring that we keep our team safe, as well as our clients, by wearing professional-grade PPE,” says Joel. “Not only for the hazardous conditions that are deteriorating daily, but also because of the pandemic,” says Joel.

HENRY MAYO Many of us are spending time trying to determine what activities are safe and which ones should be avoided. Taking care of your health should never be delayed. It is our privilege to be the primary healthcare provider in the Santa Clarita Valley, and as such we think it’s important to share with you some of the steps we are taking to keep patients safe at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Every patient who visits our Emergency Department has their temperature taken and is asked a series of COVID-19 screening questions before entering. Any patient who has a fever or other risk factors is isolated from other patients. All of our COVID-19 patients in the hospital are cared for in a separate, isolated unit. Patients who have surgeries at Henry Mayo are tested for COVID-19 and are asked a series of screening questions three to five days before their surgeries. Patients who test positive for COVID-19 have their surgeries delayed until the virus has cleared. On the day patients arrive for their surgeries their temperatures are taken. Every patient who comes to us for routine or ongoing care, such as an annual mammogram or a physical therapy appointment, is screened by telephone before their visit, and their temperatures are taken when they arrive for their appointments. We are eager to welcome visitors back to Henry Mayo, but for everyone’s safety our visitor policy remains very limited. For our patients, their healthcare teams facilitate communication with their families via phone calls or video chat. All employees, and the limited number of visitors we allow, have their temperatures taken upon arrival. CALMINSENSE THERAPY Sara R. Fogan, C.Ht., wanted to be a therapist since she was 10 years old. She has always been the person that friends and even friends-of-friends would confide in, the empathetic sounding board and nonjudging “ear” that created instant rapport with all those people who just wanted to talk. Hypnotherapy wasn’t even on her radar, Sara says, until that fateful day she met a representative from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in 2004. “I remember all those ads from the ’70s with Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady from The Brady Bunch) promoting hypnotherapy, wondering: Why is Mrs. Brady (from The Brady Bunch) talking about that? Back then, I didn’t really believe hypnosis even worked.” Her initial skepticism (subconscious mental script) was about to change. She didn’t even know hypnotherapy existed as a vocation when she accepted an offer to take a free Hypnosis 101 course at HMI. But by the end of the first class, she knew hypnotherapy was the career she had (subconsciously) been looking for all along. “There was so much psychology theory in the curriculum,” Sara recalls. “By the time I started at HMI, I PHOTO CREDIT: Rick Hustead already had a Bachelor’s degree and an M.Phil. [Research Master’s degree] in psychology, but even that material was being presented in a different, more immediate way. She credits HMI Founder Dr. John Kappas’s Theory of Mind model and his explanation of how we learn (“suggestibility”) for facilitating her understanding of how and why certain beliefs and behaviors can be so hard to change. “I was able to overcome my fear of driving on freeways by understanding the anxiety in the context of Theory of Mind. And that was even before I was hypnotized!” Even more significant are Dr. Kappas’s Emotional and Physical Sexual Personality concepts for increasing her understanding of how and why people behave the way they do. “I love explaining how this works to my clients. It really helps people work through and resolve their own challenging beliefs and unwanted behaviors, and to be able to understand why their partner does ‘x’ too,” she says. In addition to graduating with honors from HMI in 2005, Sara took a year-long course to earn a Master certification in therapeutic guided imagery from the college that year. Imagery is a huge part of her practice, she says, and it is something most of us do every day. “Do you daydream? Fantasize? Make ‘a mental list’ or pretend to have a special skill of your favorite athlete or super-hero? All that is imagery; it is also, to an extent, hypnosis. You can’t have hypnosis without imagery, and you can’t really do imagery without being in some level of hypnosis.” Now starting her sixteenth year working as a certified hypnotherapist in her private practice, Calminsense Hypnotherapy®, Sara is looking forward to helping clients achieve their vocational and avocational self- improvement goals here in Santa Clarita for many years to come.

Still, there is so much scientific information released every day, which affects our battle against the virus. While our world still grapples with a solution to the virus, the dentists at Go Dental have been working hard to keep pace with the latest research and recommendations. Changes and adjustments happen on nearly a daily basis. Our primary, initial reason for acquiring the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 laser was to perform part of the procedure for LASIK laser vision correction, replacing the microkeratome blade. This versatile laser, however, is also capable of performing laser-assisted cataract surgery so we began using it for this purpose. What we have discovered through its use has been surprising! I was surprised to find that cataract surgery was made easier for me as a surgeon. The precision of the laser-made incisions in the cornea and in the lens capsule are amazing. The most important help provided by the laser though, is that it softens the cataract by lasering it into smaller pieces. That makes it so that it requires less ultrasound energy to remove it. This results in easier surgery and a faster recovery. For some cataracts that are more advanced, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery truly is a safer procedure. Fear has gripped the hearts of people and has broken their spirit as we witness a notorious Coronavirus Pandemic and the shattering strife that resides in our cities. What then, is the textbook cure? I often share that the best way of forgetting about your sorrows, fears and depression is to serve others. Traveling the world as a medical missionary, I have the honor of serving the indigent, the hopeless and the broken. My 31 orphans in Myanmar are so thankful for meals, clothing, shelter and schooling. Close to home, here in Santa Clarita, the laughter and care that I am honored to bring to my patients is all by God’s grace, knowing that a happy heart is good medicine (Proverbs 17:22). I hope we don’t dismiss 2020 altogether. I hope we go beyond ourselves and touch other people’s hearts. I hope we will look up and know there is a God, a Savior, Jesus Christ, that loves us and awaits to care for us with open arms…if we would only turn to Him. Short-Term Classes Available for Fall 2020 Semester While the College of the Canyons Fall 2020 semester is in full swing, a wide range of short-term classes are still available! COOL SEASON VEGETABLES! As summer draws to an end and the nights become cooler, residents of Santa Clarita can begin to plan and plant a winter vegetable garden. Thoughts of home-grown lettuce and peas offer encouragement to get out and prepare the vegetable garden. If your yard does not have an area designated for a vegetable garden, consider creating one from a section of lawn or an unused side yard. All that is needed is soil and a sunny area. Even large containers set on a sunny patio will serve to grow many vegetables. October is an ideal time to set out vegetable seedlings. Seeds can also be sown directly in the garden. Most local garden centers will be well stocked with a great variety of vegetable starts as soon as summer heat has passed. Homemade compost, or bagged amendments should be added to the soil at the rate of six cubic feet per one hundred square feet of garden area. An organic fertilizer may also be applied at this time. The soil may be turned, amendments added, and plants planted all in the same day. Cool season vegetables are relatively easy to grow. Lettuce, celery, cilantro, broccoli, cabbage, and peas are a few varieties that most home gardeners have success with. Root crops such as radishes, onions, garlic, and carrots also flourish with very little care. Most vegetables do fine with a deep watering several times a week. Fertilizer and insect control are probably the only additional expenditures needed after purchasing the plants. So enjoy the fall weather, treat yourself with a trip to the local garden center, plant your vegetable garden, and reward yourself with fresh produce all winter long. FASTFRAME A big THANK YOU to all our loyal customers and friends for voting FASTFRAME the Best Custom Framing store in the SCV. We are especially grateful for the support of our customers this year given the pandemic that we are all experiencing. We have lived in Santa Clarita for over 26 years and are thankful to be part of such a wonderful community. We opened our FASTFRAME store nearly 12 years ago and have been blessed. Our customers are our friends and neighbors and we pride ourselves on our personalized service. At FASTFRAME, we frame everything including prints, fine art, mirrors, jerseys, needle points and more. For flags and three-dimensional items, we build shadow boxes to hold these treasures. “You name it, we frame it!” We are often asked what is the most unusual thing we’ve ever framed. That’s always difficult to answer because we’ve framed so many memorable things. One item that comes to mind is the Olympic torch carried by Muhammed Ali. However, we’ve also framed violins and various guitars. The most recent being a signed Eagles guitar. One of the things we enjoy most about what we do is that we help people preserve memories. We understand the importance of family heirlooms and photographs. And, all of our framing is done with conservation and preservation in mind.
