EXPLAINING POPULAR BEER STYLES The explosion of the craft brewing industry, which the Brewers Association notes experienced a 5 percent growth in 2017, ensures that just about anyone can find a beer that suits his or her palate. Beers are often placed into one of two categories, ales and lagers, though the difference between beers within each category is significant. Craft beer novices or those who simply need a refresher course on their refreshments may benefit from studying up on these popular beer styles.

Ales Ales are a type of beer brewed with top-fermenting yeast, which is often referred to as ale yeast. One of two types of yeast used in brewing, topfermenting yeast is unable to ferment some sugars. Because of that, beers made with top-fermenting yeast may have a sweet flavor. Beers made with top-fermenting yeasts can tolerate high-alcohol concentrations, so ales may have a high alcohol by volume, or ABV.

Stouts Stouts also are made with top fermenting yeast, placing them in the ale category, though they are not as sweet as ales. Stouts, including the popular Irish stout Guinness, tend to feature creamy heads. A dark, coffee-like character also is common in many stouts, and that can be traced to the use of un-malted roasted barley during their production.

Porters Similar to stouts, porters are made with top-fermenting yeast. Porters are brewed with roasted malt, setting them apart from stouts. Porters are dark, and many are described as producing flavors of chocolate, coffee and caramel.

Lagers Lagers are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast and generally feature a lower ABV and lighter color than ales. Examples of American lagers include Budweiser and Coors, though many craft brewers also produce lagers. Dark lagers are malty and smooth, and such beers typically have a higher ABV than more traditional lagers. Craft breweries produce a variety of styles of beer, and those new to the craft beer scene should know that many craft breweries produce their own ales, stouts, porters, and lagers. When visiting a craft brewery for the first time, men and women may want to order a flight, which is a selection of the various beers brewed by a particular brewer, with each beer typically served in a four-ounce glass. Doing so allows beer drinkers to sample various beers and find the style that suits them best. (MC)

The City of Santa Clarita’s annual Concerts in the Park series, presented by Logix Federal Credit Union, takes place every Saturday night through Aug. 25! These free events, which were voted “Best Live Entertainment” by The Signal’s readers, feature some of the nation’s top tribute bands. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are held at Central Park (27150 Bouquet Canyon Road) and are FREE for all to attend! Here are some fun facts about Concerts in the Park that you may not know: • 2019 marks the 30th year of Concerts in the Park. • Prior to being at Central Park, Concerts in the Park rotated through various parks throughout Santa Clarita. • It is estimated that total attendance will surpass 48,000 attendees, an average of 6,000 per concert. • The Concerts in the Park stage takes three days to assemble. It is assembled before the first concert of the year and is left up in Central Park throughout the summer. • More than 100 bands applied to play at Concerts in the Park in 2018. • A four-person committee comprised of City staff selects which bands will play. • It takes approximately 20 staff hours to review all the bands before selecting the final eight to perform. • Staff begins setting up for each concert at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishes cleanup around 11 p.m. Learn more about the City of Santa Clarita’s Concerts in the Park and see full performer bios at Santa-Clarita.com/Concerts.

Popular trends in the restaurant industry Dining out is no longer reserved for celebrating milestones or other special occasions. Many people dine out regularly for meals. A 2016 Gallup poll found that 61 percent of Americans eat dinner out at least once a week, and 16 percent are frequent diners, eating out three or more times per week. People who regularly dine out may have noticed some of the growing trends that have emerged in recent years that are helping to shape dining experiences. •

Picked-on-property offerings: Many restaurants now serve foods grown, picked and processed on the premises. Rooftop or small courtyard gardens enable restaurateurs to pass the freshness on to customers. Chefs grind their own spice blends, harvest their own eggs, cure their own bacon, and embrace other hyper-local fare.

Gut-friendly foods: Some restaurants are experimenting with preparing and offering foods that are friendly to the digestive tract. These establishments emphasize prebiotic and probiotic ingredients and focus some of their efforts on producing menus with foods that boast anti-inflammatory properties.

Streamlined menus: Food waste is a problem across the globe. Operating a sustainable restaurant requires careful decisions about the foods that make it onto the menu. Instead of offering five different chicken dishes, a restaurant may focus on two or three popular standards to cut back on waste.

Fast casual: Fast casual restaurants do not offer full table service, but offer a higher quality of food than traditional fast-food restaurants. These establishments also may be headed by trained and experienced chefs who add unique twists to popular menu items.

Extended delivery options: Dining out doesn’t have to mean eating away from home. A growing number of restaurants are emphasizing their curbside takeaway, drive-throughs and delivery services. Travel-friendly fare and heat-and-eat meals are competing with convenient options available at grocery stores.

Back to basics: More and more customers are looking for classic dishes they equate with home cooking. As a result, many restaurants are stripping away the pretense and extra ingredients and turning to traditional recipes. According to the employment salary comparison source Glassdoor, restaurant servers typically earn an average of $21,000 per year. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CHILD’S BACKPACK According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 14,000 children are treated annually for backpack-related injuries. Danielle Flowers, MD, pediatrician and Assistant Area Medical Director for Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center, encourages parents to pay special attention when choosing backpacks for youths. Backpacks that are worn incorrectly, not fitted properly or are too heavy, can cause backaches, shoulder pain, poor posture, and neck injuries. A full backpack should never weigh more than 10-15 percent of a child’s body weight. To put this in perspective, if a child weighs 75 pounds, their backpack should weigh no more than 11 pounds.

Dr. Flowers suggests these additional tips: •

Fit the backpack closely to the body, resting it in the middle of the back.

•

Don’t let the backpack sag. Avoid it falling more than four inches below waistline.

•

Place heavier items closest to the center of the back.

Last minute tips on rolling backpacks: Although some parents may be tempted to purchase a rolling backpack, users tend to overload their rolling backpacks, and if the pack has to be lifted continuously, it can cause wrist and/or shoulder strain.

CALMINSENSE HYPNOTHERAPY Sara R. Fogan, C.Ht., wanted to be a therapist since she was 10 years old. She has always been the person that friends and even friends-of-friends would confide in, the empathetic sounding board and non-judging “ear” that created instant rapport with all those people who just wanted to talk. Hypnotherapy wasn’t even on her radar, Sara says, until that fateful day she met a representative from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in 2004. “I remember all those ads from the ’70s with Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady from The Brady Bunch) promoting hypnotherapy, wondering: Why is Mrs. Brady (from The Brady Bunch) talking about that? Back then, I didn’t really believe hypnosis even worked.” Her initial skepticism (subconscious mental script) was about to change. She didn’t even know hypnotherapy existed as a vocation when she accepted an offer to take a free Hypnosis 101 course at HMI. But by the end of the first class, she knew hypnotherapy was the career she had (subconsciously) been looking for all along. “There was so much psychology theory in the curriculum,” Sara recalls. “By the time I started at HMI, I already had a Bachelor’s degree and an M.Phil. [Research Master’s degree] in psychology, but even that material was being presented in a different, more immediate way. She credits HMI Founder Dr. John Kappas’s Theory of Mind model and his explanation of how we learn (“suggestibility”) for facilitating her understanding of how and why certain beliefs and behaviors can be so hard to change. “I was able to overcome my fear of driving on freeways by understanding the anxiety in the context of Theory of Mind. And that was even before I was hypnotized!” Even more significant are Dr. Kappas’s Emotional and Physical Sexual Personality concepts for increasing her understanding of how and why people behave the way they do. “I love explaining how this works to my clients. It really helps people work through and resolve their own challenging beliefs and unwanted behaviors, and to be able to understand why their partner does ‘x’ too,” she says. In addition to graduating with honors from HMI in 2005, Sara took a year-long course to earn a Master certification in therapeutic guided imagery from the college that year. Imagery is a huge part of her practice, she says, and it is something most of us do every day. “Do you daydream? Fantasize? Make ‘a mental list’ or pretend to have a special skill of your favorite athlete or super-hero? All that is imagery; it is also, to an extent, hypnosis. You can’t have hypnosis without imagery, and you can’t really do imagery without being in some level of hypnosis.” Now starting her fifteenth year working as a certified hypnotherapist, Sara is looking forward to helping clients achieve their vocational and avocational self-improvement goals here in Santa Clarita for many years to come.

Contact lens wear causes many changes to cells and tissues of the eye, and sometimes wearing contact lenses can damage the cornea (the clear window of the eye). Even if you are currently experiencing no problems, the lenses may be causing damage to your eyes. After the initial exam, the doctors will perform a contact lens exam.

Once Properly fit, you will be asked to return to have a follow-up visit. At this time the doctor will check your vision with the contact lenses on, evaluate the fit of the lenses and ensure that the lenses are not irritating your eyes. If there needs to be a change, it is made at this time.

At Corben Optometry the care of your eyes is our most concern when wearing contact lenses, This is why we have a policy that anytime with in the year you are having difficulties with your contact lenses or your vision, you can call the office and be seen as soon as possible to fix the issue. This is included with your initial contact lens fitting fee. If we need to change the brand or power, whatever lenses you have left , we gladly exchange for the new ones. Even if the boxes are open and they were purchased from the office.

While this may be acceptable in some situations, there are differences in the water content and shape between different brands. The correct choice of which lens is right for you should only be made based on examination by your doctor, not over the phone or Internet.

The crowd-pleasing Concerts in the Park series returns to Santa Clarita for a music-filled summer, starting this weekend at Central Park. Concerts in the Park are free public events put on by the city of Santa Clarita every Saturday night from July 7 until Aug. 25. The shows start at 7 p.m. Get ready to break out your lawn chairs and blankets, grab some tasty snacks from local vendors onsite and listen to some of your favorite genre tribute bands coming to the Saugus park. Here’s a breakdown of each band performing at Concerts in the Park:

Wanted, a Bon Jovi tribute band, is first up in the lineup of Concerts in the Park. Based out of Los Angeles, the band is made up of professional musicians. The rock ’n’ roll group had immense success, playing to sold out venues and garnering rave reviews. Making driving more safe can come down to ensuring that the vehicle is in good working order — starting from the ground up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that an average of 200 people die each year in tire-related crashes. In 2016, 733 people across the United States lost their lives in accidents in which tire malfunction was a contributing factor. Roughly 70 percent of single vehicle accidents are tire-related. Taking tire maintenance seriously can greatly reduce the chances of blowouts, accidents and fatalities.

Maintain the right pressure Caring for tires not only improves safety, but also it extends the life of the tires, saving drivers money as a result. Michelin Tires says that simply checking the tires’ inflation pressure can make a significant difference in how long tires last. For example, a tire that is consistently 20 percent under-inflated may see its life expectancy reduced by 20 percent. Check tire tread Tires rely on good tread depth to maintain traction and shed water during wet conditions. AAA recommends checking tread with a visual inspection and with the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter into a tread groove with the top of Washington’s head facing down. If the top of his head is not visible, the tires have at least 4/32” of tread and are acceptable for continued use. If the top of Washington’s head shows, tires need to be replaced. Tire function is an important part of maintaining vehicle safety and performance. (MC)
