With our location right in the center of Valencia, it is a local favorite. A location that boasts ample parking, a huge patio that is dog and family friendly, and a great banquet room to host all your party needs. Jeff and Jeannie have owned JJ’s for three years and have created an intimate cozy gathering for friends to meet and enjoy the company of others. “Love how cozy the inside of this place is. It is the only restaurant with real character in Santa Clarita.” “First time at JJ’s…will not be my last. Had the club sandwich and it was one of the best ever! Families are returning to the old days of multi-generational living arrangements, and they are not just putting granny (or junior) in a spare bedroom. It is becoming very popular for people to build accessory dwelling units (also known as a granny flat) behind or beside their existing homes --and for good reason. The benefits of building a granny flat are numerous, not the least providing accommodation for your extended family or for generating rental income. What is an accessory dwelling unit? It is a secondary dwelling unit on a residential property with complete independent living facilities for family members or others (also known as second units, in-law suites or granny flats). These units can be attached or detached, have full cooking facilities, but cannot be sold separately from the primary residence. Granny flats cannot exceed 50 percent of the existing living area (they may not exceed 1,200 square feet). Recently the California legislature has modified some of the more restrictive requirements on granny flats because they recognize the need to more affordable living. These units can be rented out, allowing for homeowners to obtain additional income to help with housing expenses as well as provide affordable living to those living in these units. Including a granny flat can be a positive way to add value and flexibility to the use of your home. The fact is there is a long list of reasons why building a granny flat can be the right decision – for families, investors, the retired, the creative or the home business owner!

UNRUH SPINE CENTER Pain between the shoulder blades “Doctor, I’ve had this pain between my shoulder blades for two months now. It just gradually came on and I can’t seem to get rid of it. I put heat on it, tried to stretch it out, but nothing helps.” This is the typical story of many patients who come to us complaining of pain between the shoulder blades. The bones in the Thoracic spine (midback) are not as vulnerable to injury as those of the neck or low back. This is because they are supported by the rib cage. Despite the added protection, however, pain between the shoulder blades is a common ailment and requires expert treatment to prevent a chronic disorder from developing. Sometimes pain is caused from old chronic injuries such as sports injuries. Twisting the torso beyond its normal range of motion can wear muscles that connect the vertebrae together, leaving a weakness in that area of the spine. Many people have congenital scoliosis (curvature of the spine) in varying degrees. When they are under stress the body loses its ability to compensate for the curvature. Pain that gradually develops without apparent cause is usually the result of chronic postural stress of the spine. It may be from long distance driving or even hours of sitting in an awkward position. Sometimes even a rib will become dislocated. This usually causes more intense pain and will be aggravated on taking a deep breath, coughing or sneezing. Whatever the cause, pain between the shoulder blades can be one of the most annoying and aggravating of symptoms. It may even keep you up at night. You never seem to find a comfortable position. Every time you move in the wrong position the pain causes muscle spasm which causes more pain. It’s a vicious cycle. When the pain is caused by nerve pressure from the spine or rib cage it requires expert care to correct. Chiropractors are the only specialists trained in the precise manipulative procedures needed to remove the cause of the problem. Many patients feel relief immediately after the adjustment. HENRY MAYO URGENT CARE The Henry May Urgent Care Clinic opened 18 months ago. “When I opened the clinic, my goal was to provide the highest quality of care to patients in the SCV. Santa Clarita is my home and I believe the residents of our community deserve the best medical care,” said Dr. Bud Lawrence. The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center, a service of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, is honored to receive the 2017 “Best of” Santa Clarita Valley Award. “It means a lot to me personally and our entire team to receive this recognition,” said Terry Bucknall, Director of the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center. Created in 2002, the center was designed with patients’ physical and emotional needs in mind, using the latest advances and technology available. The center uses Genius 3-D digital mammography, an FDAapproved system that has the dual benefit of detecting 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reducing false positives by up to 40 percent. Designated by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the center is accredited for mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and breast MRI. Additionally, it will soon offer Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) for screening patients with dense breasts. Dense breast tissue can often obscure cancers on a mammogram, and research indicates dense breast tissue is the leading common risk factor for the development of breast cancer.

HENRY MAYO NEWHALL HOSPITAL Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital opened for business as a 99-bed hospital in 1975. As Santa Clarita has grown so has Henry Mayo. The hospital now has 238 beds, and construction is underway on a new patient tower that will provide up to 142 additional beds. We are honored to have received the Signal’s Best of SCV award,” said Patrick Moody, director of marketing and public relations for the hospital. “Many of our employees and medical staff members live in this valley. Dr. Kathy Brockett joined the practice in 1988, as Valencia Pediatrics was growing day by day. Dr. Brockett became a patient favorite with her loving personality and loyalty to her families. BUSINESS LAW: Avoiding Personal Liability for Business Debts Claudia McDowell of Poole & Shaffery, LLP

One compelling reason that influences business owners to either incorporate or form a limited liability company under which to conduct their business operations is the desire to limit personal liability for the debts and other obligations of their business. Typically, a shareholder is not liable for the debts of the business. In most instances, the most that a shareholder will lose in an unsuccessful business venture is the shareholder’s initial capital contribution and the shareholder’s time. This insulation from personal liability is what encourages entrepreneurs and sole proprietors to form limited liability entities under which to operate the business. Unfortunately, many business owners fail to recognize that a business owner and shareholders may, in certain circumstances be held liable for the debts of the business. This liability arises when the corporate veil is pierced. The corporate veil may be pierced when a business is sued for a debt or tort or some other obligation. As part of the lawsuit, the plaintiff may allege that the company did not operate as legal entity separate and apart from the officers, directors and shareholders such that the company was actually the alter ego of the shareholders, officers and directors and not a separate legal entity. As such, the plaintiff argues that these individuals should be held liable individually for these business debts and obligations. When the corporate veil is pierced, the personal assets of the company’s officers, directors, and shareholders become available for the plaintiff’s damages, thus defeating the whole purpose of forming a corporate entity. Here are some steps you should take to protect yourself, as a shareholder, from becoming liable for the debts of your business. First and foremost, operate your business like a business. Do not pay for personal expenses out of your business. Do not pay business expenses personally. In other words, the business pays its bills and you pay your bills - do not commingle your personal affairs with the operations of your business. Second, memorialize major decisions by the business with minutes approving these transactions. Typically, a business should memorialize with corporate minutes all real estate purchases or sales and leases as well as major purchases of equipment and vehicles. Minutes should also be prepared regarding the issuance of shares of the company’s stock, the election of directors, appointment of officers, and approving employment contracts. At a minimum, annual meetings of directors should be held as well as an annual shareholder/member meeting. These meetings may also be memorialized with written unanimous consents of directors. The bylaws or operating agreement should provide guidance as to the requirements for the annual meeting of shareholders or members. Third, the business should follow and maintain accurate and complete financial records as well as filing all required tax returns. Following these basic rules will help to insure that your limited liability entity is treated as separate and distinct from you individually thus providing you insulation from business liability such as debts. In 2005-2007, there was talk of a real estate bubble, but no one thought it would affect them. “Refi your home annually!” Don’t let equity waste away when you can use it to buy a DeLorean!” (not that there’s anything wrong with owning a DeLorean). Confidence was high, fear was low. And then 2008 happened. Home values plummeted, equity vanished, adjustables adjusted, many people lost homes. Some because payments were $4000 monthly, others just saw no equity and quit. Many decisions made when there was no fear led to disastrous consequences. As more people lost jobs, cars, and homes, we all were impacted or knew someone who was. Fear took over, and confidence in the economy hit lows not seen in our lifetimes. People saved money, not knowing when the next rainy day would come. Folks cut up their credit cards, spending went down, borrowing decreased, and people were fearful about touching those cherished savings. But then a curious thing happened. The sudden reversal of the recession in 2008 started turning into a gradual recovery. No one can say they remember the exact moment it began; fear started slipping away as confidence replaced it. Over the course of many years there were no more rattling windows from the 2008 “earthquake” leading people to believe the nightmare really was over. Which brings us back to 2017. There are few subprime mortgages anymore; they seem to have been replaced by subprime car loans. Fear is all but gone, and exuberant confidence has replaced it. Home sales, home values, and credit card borrowing are all right back where they were in 2005-2007. Maybe now isn’t the time to buy that DeLorean. STORAGE CENTER OF VALENCIA SCV Puts Its Trust in Storage Center of Valencia At Storage Center of Valencia, conveniently located in the Lowe’s Shopping Center, we would like to thank our wonderful community for once again voting us Best Storage Facility. The landscaping and architectural features of the Storage Center of Valencia are your first clue that this is not your typical storage facility. As you enter our reception area, you are greeted by our pleasant staff whose goal is to do everything possible to make your moving and storage experience the best it can possibly be. Security screens run along the wall of our lobby and monitor activity throughout our facility 24/7. Our 1,800-square-foot showroom features typical unit sizes and an endless assortment of moving and packing supplies. “Wow” is a typical reaction by many first-time visitors entering our facility. In addition to the hundreds of regular storage units, there are several things that separate this company from other storage facilities. Our facility boasts 557 regular units, ranging from 5x5s to 12x30s, parking spaces, mailboxes and 144 wine cellar units. Among these are our climate controlled units for pharmaceuticals and other items that must remain at a specific temperature. This is the only storage facility in this valley that offers climate- and humidity-controlled wine storage with a backup generator in the event of a power interruption.
