Hart’s big guns are back in business
By Justin Vigil-Zuniga Signal Sports Writer
Hart has a lot to be excited about in 2023. The league’s only returning starting quarterback, top wide receiver, core lineman and several key defensive players will suit up for the Indians.
Head coach Rick Herrington was due to miss some time after suffering a blocked artery, which led to heart transplant surgery. However, he made amazing progress and couldn’t be held away from the field.
Now it’s back to business for Hart with all eyes on the Foothill League title, a feat the school hasn’t captured in 15 years.
Senior quarterback Tim Larkins returns for his fourth year of varsity. Larkins has spent nearly triple that time playing alongside wide receiver Shawn Irwin. The two are ready to put up more big numbers in 2023.
“It’s going to be just like last year, but even better,” Larkins said. “But probably way more yards and more touchdowns.”
The two have played together since they were both 7 years old,

Herrington is excited for their senior seasons but needs to see his offensive line improve after Larkins spent a good chunk of last year scrambling to keep plays alive.
“If our linemen can block the rush, and we’re hoping they will, he’s going to have some good numbers,” Herrington said. “It’s just so hard to cover Shawn. Everyone during the summer was putting their best guy on him and he was still making catches.”
Hart will have a plethora of talented players filling out the offense.
Linebacker Chris Clauss will also take reps at running back, where he has flashed his speed and athleticism. Junior Nate Mata will also be a two-way player at running back along with Santa Clarita Christian transfer Timothy Tadler.
Playing time is up for grabs at the other receiving spots but Herrington has loved what he’s seen from that group. The 2023 receiving corps includes: Scott Morris, Zack Pellow, Kevin Reyes, Parker Maxwell and Oliver Welch.
The offensive line will feature Nathan Belith, Cory De La Torre, Colin Vandeventer, Brett Hourigan and center Kameron Werner. Vandeventer is the team’s only sophomore
