Canyon was in no way satisfied with 2022 but the season may have been a strong stepping stone for the future. The Cowboys started 2-0 and snapped a league loss streak that dated back to 2017, before finishing 3-7.
The 2023 edition of the Cowboys is full of returners, including second-year head coach Ken Holsenbeck. He knows the competition will be fierce in the Foothill League and has kept the same goal as last season. “A CIF championship, always,” Holsenbeck said. “That is the one and only goal that we will have every year.”
Holsenbeck returned the bulk of his defense and is expecting sev- eral players to make an impact on that side of the ball. Senior Diego Olujich returns for his third year of varsity and has played nearly everywhere for Canyon.
“I think as a team we’ve really progressed over the past two years,” Olujich said. “I’ll say we’ve gotten a lot stronger, faster and bigger. I think this year we can really do something.”
Olujich is a natural force in the pass rush and led the team in sacks as a sophomore. As a junior, Olujich remained on the defensive line but also took the helm of the offense at quarterback. This year, the senior moves to tight end and his primary position, outside linebacker, where Holsenbeck believes he will shine alongside returners Elijah Herreres and Dane Lawler.
