On defense, Clauss will move to middle linebacker as he has proved to Herrington time and time again that he gets to the rock.

“Chris will be moving to middle linebacker now from outside linebacker,” Herrington said. “He goes in and he gets to the ball. He’s just one of those guys that knows how to get to the ball.”

Clauss will anchor the defense alongside linebackers Ian Edwards, Rex Renfro and Zach Rogozik.

Up front, senior Vincent Tiscareno leads the defensive line from the nose tackle spot. The senior is a constant threat to break into backfields and will spearhead the charge with the two-way Mata, Vandeventer and Welch.

The group has impressed Herrington with a breakout offseason.

“During the summer, the defensive line was unbelievable,” Herrington said. “They were stopping all the runs, putting a good pass rush on without blitzing. They’re able to put a pass rush on, which is a luxury. If you can get the four guys to rush the passer and put pressure on the quarterback without having to send anyone else, it makes things much easier. They were able to do that some during the summer so we’re looking forward to seeing them in the season.”

Herrington is excited for his secondary, another group that has the potential for depth. Kolton Debritz returns to Hart after a brief move out of state. Irwin believes Debritz will be a key player in the secondary who could surprise teams.
