The
DINING WITH THE MICHELIN GUIDE
By Michele E. Buttelman Signal Staff WriterThe coveted Michelin Star is considered one of the greatest accomplishments a chef can earn for his or her restaurant. Not easy to obtain, the stars are awarded annually to restaurants that Michelin considers the very best in a given city and recipients gain prestige and exposure along with the honor. Many restaurants see an increase in business after earning their stars.
To diners who consider themselves connoisseurs of good food, serious “foodies” or “gourmands,” dining at a Michelin Star restaurant is among life’s highlights.
How to Earn a Star
A Michelin Star is awarded to restaurants offering outstanding cooking. The five universal rating criteria used by the inspectors are as follows.
• Quality of products
• Mastery of flavor and cooking techniques
• The personality of the chef represented in the dining experience
• Value for money
• Consistency between inspectors’ visits
The anonymous Michelin inspectors are all fulltime employees of the Michelin Guide. They are all former restaurant and hospitality professionals. Once several inspectors have eaten at a restaurant, they then discuss their experiences as a team in order to make a final decision.
California’s Michelin Stars
California now has 100 Michelin Star restaurants that were recently announced in December at the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Addison in San Diego was a new three-star
restaurant added to the ranks. That gives California a total of seven three-star restaurants.
Twelve restaurants were awarded two stars and 70 restaurants received a single star.
The total includes 11 Green Stars awarded for leadership in sustainability practices. California is home to 11 of only 13 Green Stars in North America.
California has the largest total of Michelin Starred restaurants in the United States, New York is second.
In addition to the restaurants awarded Michelin Stars the guide also named 15 new Bib Gourmand recipients, which recognizes eateries that offer a three-course meal at a reasonable price.
Reservations
Restaurants that have earned Michelin Stars have achieved “celebrity status” in the restaurant world. As expected, obtaining reservations can often be challenging for many Michelin Star restaurants that have earned "celebrity status."
The French Laundry, located in Yountville, Calif., has been called “the best restaurant in the world, period” by the late Anthony Bourdain. It is reported to be one of the most difficult restaurants to book a table.
However, with careful planning and patience foodies can experience all the California Michelin-starred restaurants.
Many restaurants can be booked through the Open Table reservation system at www.opentable. com. Another popular reservation system is Tock at www.exploretock.com.
Some restaurants include links to their reservations on their Facebook or website pages.
Three Stars
The highest rating on the Michelin scale is three stars. There are 142 three-star restaurants in the
world, California had seven of those until Jan. 1 when Manresa in Los Gatos closed. Here are the remaining six.

DID YOU KNOW?
Andre and Edouard Michelin founded their tire company in 1889 in France. To help motorists develop their trips, the brothers produced a small guide filled with handy information for travellers, such as maps, information on how to change a tire, where to fill up on gas and a listing of places to eat or stay for the night.
In 1926, the guide began to award stars for fine dining establishments, initially marking them only with a single star. Five years later, a hierarchy of zero, one, two and three stars was introduced and in 1936, the criteria for the starred rankings were published.
Today, that is called the Michelin Guide and has become a means of finding the finest restaurants around the world. (Michelin Group)

Why You May Not Be Getting Results From Your Workout
By Anna Ryan Signal Contributing WriterBecoming consistent with your workout routine can be a challenge, but when you’re seeing no significant results it can be even more frustrating. Whether you’re experienced with working out or you’re new to exercise as part of a new year’s resolution, it’s helpful to know what will hinder your results to keep you on the right path.
into your body by some simple steps like jogging. As well as this, perform a mobility routine to help with your joints that will be most used in your workout, such as arm and shoulder circles if you are training upper body. If you’re specifically focusing on weightlifting, you can warm up by practicing the exercise with no weight — doing so will help with your form, too.
you can even have on the go if you have a hectic schedule.
Neglecting Sleep
Never underestimate the importance of sleep. If you’re not getting enough shut eye at night, you’ll lack energy for your workouts and therefore won’t reach your full potential when it comes to your performance.
On top of this, muscles release amino acids that build protein into the bloodstream during sleep which allows them to grow and recover, meaning you can get back to exercising sooner; aim for around 7-9 hours of sleep each night, even if it means going to bed earlier than usual.
Skipping Food Before a Workout
Skipping a meal before your workout may sound practical if you’re heading for an early morning session as soon as you wake up, but it’s vital that you eat beforehand to give your body energy. Carbohydrates in particular will give your body the fuel it needs, so opt for foods such as wholegrain cereals or whole-wheat toast with some fruit. However, stick to a small portion size so that you don’t feel sluggish for your workout.
Not Pushing Yourself Hard Enough
It may be easy to get comfortable with the same workout routine, but this habit can only lead to losing your determination by getting bored.
As your body gets used to the workout, you’ll build strength and resilience and will eventually have the ability to push yourself to the next level.
For example, you will find that you will soon be able to run for a longer amount of time on the treadmill or will be able to lift heavier weights if you stay consistent with your workout. Pushing yourself to the next level avoids a plateau and keeps your muscles challenged to continue building strength.
Not Consuming Enough Protein
Not Warming Up
Warm-ups are often overlooked, despite them being a crucial element of a workout. Without warming up, you won’t have your maximum capabilities and you won’t be fully prepared for exercises as your muscles won’t be activated.
Warm-ups will vary depending on your specific workout, but in general, you need to get your blood flowing
Protein is an essential nutrient in your diet, whether you wish to build muscle or lose weight. If weight loss is your goal, protein supports a healthy metabolism and reduces your appetite, while it helps to build muscle by helping to repair and maintain muscle tissue.
It’s recommended to consume around one gram of protein per pound of your body weight for optimal results, so consider adding foods like chicken, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and walnuts to your diet which are all high in protein. If you struggle to reach your suggested intake, consider protein shakes which
Not Letting Your Body Rest
You may assume that the more days you spend in the gym the better your results will be, but if you’re not leaving any time to rest, this can slow the process down.
Over-exercising leads your body to exhaustion, thus affecting your performance when working out and preventing you from building strength. Not to mention, letting your body recover avoids injuries which would only cause lack of exercise in the long run. Three rest days a week is gen-
erally the recommended amount, although if you are partaking in particularly intense exercise or new to working out you may need to take more depending on how your body responds.
A spokesperson from Fitness Volt has commented: “For some people, fitness can be overwhelming, from understanding the correct form for exercises to learning which ones fit your goals in the first place. So, it can be quite stressful to feel like you’ve nailed your workout routine but you aren’t seeing any results after quite some time.
Fortunately, the common reasons which hinder workout results aren’t anything too complicated, and it might be something as simple as having a day off from exercising – but it’s important that gym-goers are aware to keep them on the right track.”

ENTERTAINMENT
‘You People’ Tries too Hard … ‘Subtly Take a Seat’
By Richard Roeper Signal Contributing Writer‘You People’
(out of four)
Netflix presents a film directed by Kenya Barris and written by Barris and Jonah Hill. Rated R. In theaters and on Netflix.
Everything that doesn’t work in the disappointing Netflix culture-clash romantic comedy “You People” is crystallized in the scene in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ wealthy white and Jewish Shelley Cohen welcomes her son, Ezra (Jonah Hill), and Ezra’s Black girlfriend, Amira (Lauren London), to her posh Brentwood home.
“Oh my gosh, you are so beautiful,” gushes Shelley. “I love your hair, LOVE your fingernails, look at these rings …” A moment later, Shelley says, “I want to put this out to the group and see how it lands. I think the police are and always have been
f----- up towards Black people, and I, for one, hate it.”
Ezra’s father, Arnold (David Duchovny), soon chimes in by telling Amira, “I like your braids. Xzibit had braids. Do you remember that show, ‘Pimp My Ride’? That was a blast.”
Subtlety, take a seat, you won’t be needed today. Shelley fawns over Ami-
ra as if she’s some sort of exotic pet, while Arnold immediately takes a pop culture dive to prove he’s, you know, down. These two people in “You People” are so condescendingly, offensively terrible, they’re like the family in “Get Out,” minus the murder.
This is the tone throughout the film, which sinks under the weight of its obviousness and a consistently heavy-handed approach, despite the sometimes stylish and well-paced direction from Kenya Barris (“blackish”) and an incredibly talented cast. Every once in a while, the screenplay by Barris and Hill serves up a sly observation about class, culture and racial differences, and the actors are so good they know how to wring a few chuckles out of the material — but time and again, “You People” uses a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel.
We first meet Ezra as he and his best friend, Mo (the brilliant Sam Jay), are doing their “The Mo & E-Z Show” podcast, which must be doing pretty well, considering the level of equipment and the flood of comments pouring in. Wearing an Ice Cube T-shirt, Ezra riffs with Mo about Black culture, and they’re pretty great together — but it turns out this is just a hobby for Ezra, who works full time as a broker.

Ezra climbs into what he thinks is his Uber outside of his firm, but it’s actually a private car driven by Lauren London’s Amira, who had pulled over because she was lost. This is a classic “Meet Cute.” In a matter of a few scenes, we’re segueing into another trope — what Roger Ebert called the “Semi-Obligatory Lyrical Interlude,” with Ezra and Amira sharing good times and falling in love to the sounds of “Stay High” by Childish Gambino and Brittany Howard and then “Best Part” by H.E.R., followed by a title card telling us it’s SIX MONTHS LATER, and time for Ezra and Amira to meet each other’s families.
As noted, Ezra’s parents, Shelley and Arnold, are clueless white liberals who behave as if they’ve never met a Black person in their lives, even though they’re in their early 60s and have led presumably rich lives.
As for Amira’s parents: Eddie Murphy lends his giant star presence and delivers a grounded, deadpan perfor-
mance as Akbar, a Muslim convert who sees just about everything in terms of black and white, while the wonderful Nia Long is given less to do but still resonates as Amira’s mother, Fatima. They meet Ezra for the first time at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles, where Akbar says, “So do you hang out in the hood all the time, or do you just come up here for our food and our women?” and it’s downhill from there. Ezra sputters on about how he wants to marry Amira and they’ll have mixed-race children, and “mixed-race people are really awesome. You have Mariah, Derek Jeter and, of course, you have the GOAT, he was mixed race … our guy, the legend, Malcolm X.”
“OUR guy?” comes the response from Fatima.
For long stretches of time, “You People” hits the same two notes. Shelley tries WAY too hard to bond with Amira, e.g., singing loudly with Andra Day’s “Rise Up” as they’re driving to a spa day where Shelley makes a big deal over a perceived racial incident, while Akbar is determined to grind Ezra into seeing he has no idea what it means to be Black, despite all his cultural appropriation. Various subplots are no less nuanced, as when Amira makes a presentation during a job interview to some Harvard grads who think Amira also went to Harvard. When she explains she didn’t go to Harvard, she went to Howard, they’re dumbfounded; it’s clear they’ve never heard of this “Howard” place. Come on.
Right up until an ending straight out of a mediocre rom-com from the early 2000s, “You People” never feels like more than a series of stitched-together scenes making some legitimate but obvious points about racial differences. It doesn’t help that Ezra is kind of an idiot — a well-meaning idiot, but still — and that while Hill is a splendid talent, he plays Ezra in such a low-key manner. Murphy’s Akbar is probably the most complex and interesting character in the film, while Louis-Dreyfus’ enormous comedic talents are wasted on a one-note character who is so irritatingly ignorant you just want to be somewhere else, as soon as possible. People like the people in “You People” are not the funniest people we know.

Options to Finance Home Improvement Projects
Renovating a home is a great way to impart personality indoors and out. Improvements can make spaces more livable and address safety issues. Home renovations often take residents’ lifestyles into account, and changes can be customized to accommodate a growing family or an empty nest.
No matter the job, home improvements tend to be costly. According to the financial resource SoFi, on average, the cost to renovate or remodel a whole house runs between $10 and $60 per square foot.
Certain rooms demand a higher cost, with a kitchen or bathroom remodel costing around $100 to $250 per square foot due to electrical and plumbing needs. Figuring out how to pay for the improvement project is as essential to the planning process as picking out materials and contractors.
The following are some financial considerations and financing options for homeowners looking to renovate their properties.
Consider if the investment is worth it Remodeling magazine routinely assesses common improvements and how much homeowners can expect to recoup on the investment in its annual “Cost v. Value” report. In 2022, a homeowner spending $4,000 on a garage door replacement re-
couped 93.3% of the investment, whereas adding a midrange bathroom at $63,000 would only offer a 51.8% return.
Homeowners must decide if they want to go forward with the project if they’re likely to get just a $33,000 return when they choose to sell the home later on.
Refinance the home mortgage Homeowners can use a cash-out mortgage refinance as a way to access thousands of dollars for a remodel. This taps into a home’s equity. Keep in mind that the mortgage will then be a new mortgage at the current interest rate and an outstanding balance higher than what was the current one. Typically 20% equity in the home is needed to refinance.
Take out a personal loan For those who do not
want to refinance, a personal loan or home improvement loan can be good for midsized projects, according to American Express. Personal loans for home renovations typically require no collateral and one’s credit score determines the interest rate.
Use a home equity line of credit A HELOC is a form of revolving credit, like a credit card. Homeowners borrow against the credit line granted with the home being the collateral. As a person pays down what is owed, he or she can borrow more. This is a good idea for recurring or long-term home improvements.
A home equity loan Home equity loans use the home as collateral like a HELOC. The home equity loan is an installment loan for a fixed amount on a fixed monthly schedule for a set term. These are sometimes called second mortgages.
No- or low-interest credit card Smaller projects can be financed using credit cards. Many will offer introductory rates with no interest for a few months. This is generally only preferable if a person can pay off the balance before interest is charged.
These are the primary ways to finance home improvement projects when costs exceed available cash on hand. (MC)

Confronting Frequent Increases in Costs of Living
Prices on the majority of goods and services have increased significantly over the last year-plus. Financial analysts report that inflation has reached heights that haven’t been seen in 41 years.
According to the United States Department of Labor, the consumer price index, which measures changes in how much Americans pay for good
and services, rose 0.4% in September, 2022.
As prices soared, families’ budgets were being pushed. What can people do in the face of rising costs on items they need, including those who may be on fixed incomes? These suggestions may help.
Review Your Budget
Keep track of how much items cost right now. Document all spending by writing down a list of weekly expenses or utilizing any number of free budgeting apps available. Tracking what is going out may make it easier to cut costs on less essential items, such as streaming services or gym memberships.
Contact Service Providers
You may be able to negotiate better deals with a service provider, such as a mobile phone company or a cable television provider, if they learn you are considering leaving. If they can’t work out a deal, go with the less expensive provider. You can always
switch back at the end of the term if you desire.
Stop Automatic Payments
Having subscriptions and other bills automatically deducted from your checking account is convenient, but those rising costs may be overlooked. By viewing your bill and paying it each month, you can see where costs have increased and where you might need to rethink services.
Carpool
Reduce expenditures on gas by
sharing the costs with another person. Determine if public transportation is more cost-effective than driving to work or school each day.
Alternative retailers
Brand loyalty to one supermarket or a particular retailer is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Nowadays it is wise to comparison shop across various stores to figure out where you’re getting the best deal.
Venture into stores you may not have considered previously. Divide your shopping list by store category, visiting several for different items if it leads to big savings.
Unplug
Cut down on energy costs by unplugging items when not in use. Reduce dependence on devices to further stem costs on electricity and gas-powered appliances.
Prices continue to rise and consumers can explore various ways to stick to their spending budgets. (MC)
Dos and Don’ts of Healthy Weight Loss
Maintaining a healthy weight promotes long-term health. Being overweight or obese are risk factors for various conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results. Individuals aspiring to lose weight can follow these guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
; DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
: DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5 to 10% of your total body weight is bound to produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
; DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
: DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
; DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn off the excess

calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism and benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system as well.
: DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
; DO speak with a doctor if you are vetting diet and exercise plans. A healthcare professional can assist you by indicating if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.
: DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
; DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight
loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods.
Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques. (MC) ❦
The Dangers of Ultraprocessed Foods
The results of two studies recently published in the British medical journal The BMJ found that eating a lot of ultraprocessed foods significantly increases men’s risk of colorectal cancer.
Published in August 2022, the studies, which examined individuals in both the United States and Italy, also found that diets high in ultraprocessed foods can lead to heart disease and early death in both and men and women.
Processed and ultraprocessed foods include meats such as bacon, beef jerky, corned beef, ham, hot dogs, and salami. Various health organizations have previously warned that those meats are associated with a higher risk of bowel cancer in men and women.
These latest studies reported that it’s not just ultraprocessed meats that increase risk for cancer, but also other processed or ultraprocessed foods, including ready-to-eat-or-heat foods such as French fries, prepackaged soups, sauces, frozen pizza, doughnuts, and store-bought cookies and cakes, among others. Insight Treatment is an adolescent mental health treatment program for teens and their families (ages 13-18) and has been serving families for 30 years. We have 7 locations across the Greater LA area and Central Valley. Our Santa Clarita facility is located at 26330 Diamond Pl. off of Centre Pointe Pkwy.
Insight’s fundamental belief is that teens need to feel they belong to a community of their peers. Teens will only really open up and express their emotional pain and challenges when they feel safe in this type of environment. In Santa Clarita we have a warehouse space that serves as a teen clubhouse for our PHP/IOP. This environment has proved to be more conducive to fostering relationships versus a more traditional setting in an office or medical building.
We provide an Intensive Outpatient program (IOP) in the afternoon/evenings that consist of group, individual
and family therapy. For those teens who are struggling with school we also have a day school where they can come and focus on their academic work (PHP).
We believe it is important to address the entire family system when a teen is struggling. We therefore provide a lot of support to the parents with Family Night and Parent Group once a week. We take all private-Insurance plans and in network with many insurance plans.
If you are interested discussing other insurance options or referrals, we would be happy to help out.
All calls are confidential and we offer an initial in-person assessment at no charge. We are happy to assist anyone in finding appropriate treatment program for your teen and family.
Give our admissions line a call at (888) 295-9995 for more information on our program or to schedule an assessment.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that as much as 5% of older adults living in the general community are suffering from clinical depression. Those figures are even higher among older adults who are hospitalized (11.5%) and those who require home health care (13.5%).
The National Council on Aging reports that older adults are at an elevated risk of developing depression, though there’s no single, specific cause increasing that risk. Chronic conditions, which the CDC estimates
affect as much as 80% of older adults; decreased functional ability; reduced mobility; loneliness; and financial issues related to retirement are among the potential causes of depression in older adults.
As difficult as depression can be, the NCOA notes that treatment has been found to be just as effective for seniors as it is in younger populations. Aging individuals or those concerned about an aging relative are encouraged to visit the American Psychological Association website at psychiatry.org to learn more about the many ways depression can be treated. Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them.
The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual.
The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that
these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions.
Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit.
It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

What You Need to Know About Cholesterol
Understanding and improving cholesterol is important for people of all ages, including children and teens. Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels can help keep your heart healthy and lower your chances of getting heart disease or having a stroke.
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. In fact, about 38% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with high cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. Understanding what cholesterol is, the role it plays, when to get screened and how to manage it are important aspects of protecting your overall health and prevent a heart attack or stroke.
Understanding Cholesterol
A waxy, fat-like substance created by the liver and consumed from meat, poultry and dairy products, cholesterol isn’t inherently bad for you. In fact, your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. However, too much cholesterol circulating in the blood can pose a problem.
The two types of cholesterol are low-density li-
poprotein (LDL), which is considered “bad,” and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which can be thought of as “good” cholesterol. Too much of the “bad” kind, or not enough of the “good,” increases the risk of cholesterol slowly building up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain.
Cholesterol can join with other substances to form a thick, hard deposit on the inside of the arteries called plaque. This can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible - a condition known
as atherosclerosis. If a blood clot forms, it may be more likely to get stuck in one of these narrowed arteries, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.
Understanding Risk
Your body naturally produces all the LDL it needs. An unhealthy lifestyle can make your body produce more LDL than required. Behaviors that may negatively affect your cholesterol levels include lack of physical activity, obesity, eating an unhealthy diet and smoking or exposure to tobacco smoke.
In addition to unhealthy habits, which are the cause of high LDL cholesterol for most people, some people inherit genes from their parents or grandparents - called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) - that cause them to have too much cholesterol and can lead to premature atherosclerotic heart disease. If you have a family history of FH or problems related to high cholesterol, it’s important to get your levels checked.

The right time to exercise is a different time of day for everyone. But there is good reason to consider moving your workout to the morning. The health experts at Healthline say that morning workouts are less vulnerable to distractions as phone calls and texts will typically take place later in the day.
Working out first thing in the morning can help you focus and take charge at work or in school soon after. Since exercise can boost metabolism, it starts the day out on a good foot, and may help you make healthier decisions throughout the day, including choosing more nutritious foods. (MC)

Managing Cholesterol
If you have high cholesterol, understanding your risk for heart disease and stroke is one of the most important things you can do, along with taking steps to lower your cholesterol.
Often, simply changing certain behaviors can help bring your numbers into line. Eating a hearthealthy diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables,
whole grains, lean or plant-based protein, fish and nuts while limiting red and processed meats, sodium and sugar-sweetened foods and beverages is one of the best ways to lower your cholesterol. While grocery shopping, look for the Amer-
Other lifestyle changes include losing weight, quitting smoking and becoming more physically active, as a sedentary lifestyle can lower HDL. To help lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure, experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week, such as walking, biking or swimming.
For some people, lifestyle changes may prevent or manage unhealthy cholesterol levels. For others, medication may also be needed. Work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that’s right for you. If medication is required, be sure to take it as prescribed.

Long-Term Cognitive Health
Cognitive health is not something to take for granted. Although a certain level of memory loss can be expected as people age, when the ability to clearly think, learn and remember is compromised, those changes can affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and should serve as a cause for concern.
Brain health should be a priority for everyone. The National Institute on Aging says brain health is an umbrella term that encompasses a host of factors, including:
Cognitive health which is how well you think, learn and remember
Motor function or how you make and control movements
Tactile function which is how you feel sensations; and
Emotional function or how emotions are interpreted and responded to.
Individuals can safeguard brain health — particularly cognitive health — by taking these steps.
Be More Health Conscious
Working with doctors, individuals can put their health first. This includes getting routine screenings, managing chronic health problems, limiting or avoiding alcohol and nicotine products, and getting the recommended amount of sleep each night.
Manage High Blood Pressure
All chronic conditions cause longterm repercussions, but the NIA indicates that observational studies show having high blood pressure in midlife increases the risk of cognitive decline later in life. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk for mild cognitive impairment and possibly de-
Challenge Your Brain
Harvard Medical School says nurturing social contacts, engaging in stimulating mental activities like reading and doing puzzles, seeing new places, and learning new things can help keep the brain in top form.
Manage Stress
Stress can take its toll on the body, and there is reason to believe that it may adversely affect cognitive health as well. Make every stride to reduce stress, whether that involves taking vacations, meditating, laughing with friends and family, or engaging in relaxing activities that relieve stress.
Get Enough Vitamin D
Vitamin D is linked to a host health benefits, including its potential to promote a healthy brain. Individuals can get more time outdoors to get vitamin D naturally from the sun and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If doctors find that vitamin D levels are exceptionally low, supplementation can help.
Pay Attention to Hearing Loss
Certain hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, says Healthline. Researchers in Italy concluded that people with central hearing loss had a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those with no hearing loss or peripheral hearing loss. Individuals with central hearing loss are urged to speak to their physicians to determine if they can take preventive action to stave off further decline.
Cognitive health should be a priority. Adults can employ various strategies to reduce their risk of cognitive decline as they age. (MC) ❦
The Importance of Hobbies
Hobbies are important for many different reasons. While one of the main reasons to immerse oneself in a hobby is to have fun, the benefits do not stop there.
Improve physical well-being
Physical hobbies, such as swimming, running, martial arts, or hiking, increase heart rate and improve brain function.
Improve mental well-being Hobbies can help relieve stress and take your mind off of pressing issues. This may help with anxiety or depression as well.
Break monotony Engaging in an enjoyable activity may break the pattern of daily schedules that focus on low value activities.
Offer new challenges Work can be challenging. However, the challenges posed by hobbies get people out of their comfort zones in ways that

differ from challenging work projects. Overcoming these challenges can boost self-esteem, which can translate to one’s professional life as well.
Explore talents You may never know what you are capable of accomplishing if you never give new activities a try. You may be surprised to learn how well you adapt to a new skill. Self-discovery is important at any stage of life, but particularly for teenagers, according to Developing Good Habits, a lifestyle improvement resource. (MC) ❦
Have you ever questioned the opinion of a dentist or healthcare provider? Maybe something didn’t feel right about the options you were being presented? If these feelings resonate with you then a second opinion or consultation is probably what you should be looking for. It’s already very difficult to trust someone with your personal health, and as a patient, you should always feel comfortable with your dentist. The patient-doctor relationship is one of the most open, important, and potentially long lasting relationships that most people will have.
It may seem difficult to take the first step but here is a short list of what to do:
1. Obtain your X-rays and pertinent health care information. Digital records are recommended.
2. Write down your questions and concerns.
3. Find a 5-star dentist near you and schedule an appointment.
When you arrive at your appointment, be as transparent as possible. When building a new relationship with a dentist, explain your concerns clearly and calmly. Always have an open discussion with your dentist by addressing and acknowledging your concerns. At White Crown Dental, our goal is to treat every patient as an individual and address each concern hand in hand with gentle dental care. Dr. Henry Sobol and his team are available for you and are always willing to assist in every possible way at (833) 377-6265. We are located near the corner of Bouquet and Soledad Canyon. Garden Growing Basics
Growing your own produce is an all-around smart practice, from the money you’ll save at the grocery store to the contributions you can make toward a cleaner planet.
Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your athome garden:
1. Select a perfect spot
You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily, where erosion and other pitfalls (including hungry wildlife) won’t be a problem.
2. Choose between ground and containers
There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.
3. Understand the importance of quality soil
You may think any dirt will do, but keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or aged manure
all help improve soil quality.
4. Keep water close
Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water when the soil is dry about an inch below the surface.
5. Plan for plenty of sun
A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.
6. Consider what you’ll grow
Starting with veggies you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s grow ing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.
7. Plant according to a calendar
Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produc es food for your family for a longer period of time.

The Thin Blur Line
I received an e-mail about L.A. Police Chief Michael Moore banning display of the Thin Blue Line flag because it was a symbol of “racism.” That decision was nothing short of cowardice, an abandonment of his support for the fine men and women of his department, at a time when it appears so many public and political leaders are singing the same song about defunding the police.
I look at the Thin Blue Line as representing every man and woman who carries a badge. It does not discriminate. It represents every race, creed and ethnicity. It shows solidarity for the frontline heroes who put their lives on the line each day they do their job. They hug and kiss their wives, girlfriends and their kids goodbye knowing they may never have that chance again.
My wife had to do this every time I left the house for 33 years when I was with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. She tried to make believe I was just going to a menial non-dangerous job and I was certain to be home for supper at 5 p.m. I cannot begin to tell you how many anniversaries, birthday parties for the kids, Christmases, etc.
Working rotating shifts for those 33-plus years, I worked knowing the supervisors had my back, including the sheriff. One works those jobs because they want to help the community in a small way.
Moore, in banning the Thin Blue Line, has announced to his troops that he no longer trusts them, believes in them or has their back. That’s a sinking feeling they must have knowing their boss no longer cares about them. He has given in to the complaints of a few malcontents. Moore should hand in his resignation and go live in hiding and shame. He is no longer a police officer. He is a political puppet. I certainly hope that if he remains with the LAPD he realizes he will be serving on his knees instead of standing on his feet tall and proud as an American. Please, would someone please tell me what is racist about a Thin Blue Line? My hat is off to every officer of the LAPD and their Thin Blur Line. One taxpayer’s opinion.

Self-Enthronement, Age of Anxiety
By David HeggIn a recent article at wng.org, university professor Thaddeus Williams chronicled the history of the West as moving from the Age of Faith, through the Age of Enlightenment, and on to the Age of Science. Then, he asked the question, “What label best describes our present age?”
Some have suggested the Age of the Screen given the amount of time we spend in front of our phones, tablets, computers and TV. Those who see everything though the legal lens suggest the Age of the Gavel, and Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor has argued that we are now in the Age of Authenticity.
Taylor’s label focuses not on the influences, values, and history that exist outside the individual, but rather the enthronement of the psychologized self, the feeling-based conviction that finding my own self, my own authenticity, is the primary goal of human existence and the stuff of personal power.
Taylor hits the nail on the head. For proof, just look around at where the power is found in our world and you’ll find it in the way all society is now expected to bow and scrape and applaud whatever an individual determines their identity to be. But, that’s probably only the most obvious indication of the monumental turn in our society as we have come to believe meaning begins with what the individual feels, desires and demands. The truth is we have not only turned to the inner self as sovereign. In turning to self we have also turned away from the one entity in our universe that actually is sovereign. The enthronement of self has been the intentional dethronement of the supernatural, of the very concept of God.
But this turn inward has not come without serious consequences. It turns out, as Jonathan Leeman has written, that self-enthronement also demands self-justification. If we are on the throne of our own lives, able to determine our own identity, and choose our own path, then we are also responsible for our own feelings, decision, actions and outcomes. And, as Shakespeare's Hamlet declares, “Therein lies the rub.”
As many have discovered, the rub is really the onslaught of anxiety. Charles Taylor’s discernment is spot on. We are living in the Age of Anxiety. In a very real way, while still in the middle of the battle for personal sovereignty, we are finding we’ve met the enemy and it is us.
Sadly, it began years ago with the Self-Esteem movement. You remember? While historically, recognition followed achievement, we decided that if we just told our children how great they were, they would then go on to achieve greatness. But look around. We live in a society where mistakes are plentiful but no one made them.
Everyone is their own king. Consequently, old-school absolutes are passé. Hard work, paying your dues, struggling until you get it right, faith in God, and understanding the value of experience are no longer believed, much less practiced.
Why? Because the authentic self sits on the throne of public opinion and declares that up is down, wrong is right, gender is fluid, parents don’t know what’s best for the kids, and nothing that can be learned from natural law, history, or plain ol’ common sense carries any weight. All that matters is how the sovereign self feels about it.
And, as a great politician once asked, “Are we better off now?” No, we’re not. We’ve become our own gods, and when we fail, when we’re wrong, and our missteps bring adverse consequences down on our heads, we have no excuses and nowhere to run. We’re stuck with ourselves and compelled to find some way to justify ourselves, to stave off the disillusionment, the despair, and lives drowning in anger, anxiety and depression. We desperately begin searching for a way to feel good again about ourselves and the make-believe world we’ve created. So where do we turn to fix things, to regain some semblance of happiness and success? We too often make use of the escapes society so gleefully provides. Some run to therapy, others to alcohol and meds, and still others to dangerous drugs, even crime. All this running is fueled by the horrible reality that wherever we go, there we are. The therapy appointment ends, the alcohol and meds wear off even as they wear us down. And the drugs and crime only increase the lie that we’re good, in charge, and able to achieve whatever we can dream.
In the past few weeks we watched as young people have died of fentanyl poisoning at an alarming rate. We have cried as sheriff’s deputies have died from gunshots. We have driven by unsheltered human beings whose lives have been decimated by addiction and mental illness. Yet, for the most part, we chalk it up to a lack of money spent, or the lack of good jobs and affordable housing.
Dear friends, all of the political and financial issues must be acknowledged. But there’s more to the human person than the purely physical. At our core, we all have a soul, that immaterial part of us that longs for what only faith can provide. That faith is only as strong as its object. Simply put, we’ve pushed faith in God to the margins, and almost off the page, and only now are we beginning to realize the truth that he is irreplaceable. Let’s stop looking inside for authenticity and truth, and instead, look to the one who is both.
