STAGE 2 EFFICIENT IRRIGATION PRACTICES

• HOW LONG YOU WATER MATTERS. Much of our SCV soil is clay, which means there is typically runoff after 5 minutes of traditional irrigation. By breaking the 10-minute watering time into two 5-minute or less cycles, your landscape will soak up more of the water it needs.

• YOUR IRRIGATION ZONES MATTER. Two 5-minute cycles are allowed per irrigation zone. Meaning, each section of your groundcover, shrubs or other landscaped areas can be watered a maximum of twice a day, no more than 5 minutes each time.

Using color to evoke feelings and emotions is hardly new but combining a carefully curated color palette with other design elements can allow you to create a look that pays homage to the past while breathing new life into your living space.

With more people living their everyday, working lives at home, many homeowners are discovering the contentment that comes with slowing down. Often that means looking to the past to find com fort for moving forward.

Whether living through the romance of rural lifestyles, the comfort of home or the nostalgia from far-off times, some of today’s most beloved design aesthetics celebrate the past, present and fu ture while bringing balance, hope and comfort for you and your family to embrace.

Beige offer subtle color for lighter, brighter spaces. Mixing and Matching of Eras A new take on retro design is emerging in which eras are blended and new and old furnishing work side by side. To get this look, you’ll craft a space that marries histori cal and contemporary design, celebrating both the old and new. To design for longevity, incorporate pieces that are ambiguous in era and stand the test of time.

n the world of design, what’s old inevitably becomes new again, and a similar pattern is inspiring today’s on-trend color palettes for home decor. The latest styles reflect reviving and comforting colors influenced by heritage and romance, lending to a look that is familiar in an individualistic way.

Reimagining classic, familiar tones allows you to achieve a design motif that is equal parts reminis cent and refreshing.

Blending Past and Present

A cohesive color scheme can allow the various elements to stand on their own while working in harmony for an intentional design. For example, the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Collection of the Year includes a combination of familiar tones that have been thoughtfully curat ed by design experts who borrow color and design concepts from the past for a hopeful future and a sense of belonging. Hues like Poetry Plum and Hot Cocoa evoke warmth and depth, while mod erate shades like Restrained Gold and Glamour offer fresh ways to incorporate mid-range neutrals. Vintage Homestead Reviving design elements from the past with mixed patterns, classic shapes and vintage decor adds up to comfortable and comforting design. With this trend, prints and patterns encompass a range of styles, reinforcing how interiors connect to fashion. Mixing classic elegance with sleek vintage shapes is refining the concept of polished comfort. To achieve the look, curate pieces in heritage shapes and patterns, along with retro accents. Be sure to incorporate vintage lighting and glass, as well.

Nostalgia serves as an emotional tool that de livers deep-rooted serenity and powerful healing properties. Looking to the past is often beneficial during times of uncertainty and can be an opportu nity to bring styles and practices back to the pres ent to create an appreciation of the past.

Striking a balance between old and new can take many forms, as these styles show:

“The Vintage Homestead Color Collection offers an effortless look that reveals the importance of be ing hopeful to find stability and balance,” said Ash ley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Our 2023 Color Collection of the Year revives elements from the past that are perfectly paired with vintage, comfortable and clas sic colors.”

Heritage Revival An interest in reviving the past is evident in design trends like a remerging ap preciation of antiques and vintage elements, such oversized furniture and traditional shapes. To cap ture this style, your design should focus on con trasting old and new for a mix-and-match look. Ultimately, the aesthetic is a look that feels simulta neously individualistic and curated.

A versatile color choice like Darkroom, the 2023 Color of the Year from HGTV Home by Sher win-Williams, is an alluring shade that is classic enough for heritage interiors but also modernly retro for a throwback-inspired aesthetic. It’s a neu tral perfect for creating an eclectic yet modern look inside and out. Indoors, use it on the walls to offset more earthy brown and taupe tones in your fur nishings and textiles.

In 2008, advancements in the sci ence of analyzing genomes led to authorities tracing all of the collect ed anthrax samples to a single flask of RMR 1029 — a flask Dr. Bruce Ivins had created for his experiments.

On Sept. 18, 2001, letters contain ing anthrax were mailed to the New York headquarters of ABC News, NBC News, CBS News and the New York Post, and to the tabloid pub lisher American Media Inc. in Boca Raton, Florida. “The Anthrax Attacks” takes on the aspects of a thriller as we see Gregg as Ivins engaging in non-denial deni als, while investigators wonder if his efforts to ostensibly help them for so long were part of an elaborate scheme of misdirection. With the investiga tion closing in on him but no charges yet filed, Ivins committed suicide on July 29, 2008. The FBI closed the case and destroyed the evidence. The case against Ivins seems solid, but there are those who maintain it wasn’t him. We’ll never know for sure.

In the United States each year, 350 million or more wild birds are killed when striking windows. Research shows that applying decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows can substantially reduce the likelihood of this occurring.

According to the Natural Resourc es Defense Council, Americans consume nearly 3 trillion gallons of water, 200 million gallons of gas and 70 million pounds of pesticides on their lawns each year. You can reduce your contribution to the problem by swapping out your conventional lawn for a meadow (which is comprised of native plants already adapted to thrive in your region), xeriscaping (a drought-resistant option requiring no mowing and little to no irrigation) or by simply letting your grass grow wild and free. Talk to your neighbors about your decision and encourage them to do the same.

Amid this alarming trend, you can make the skies safer for birds by mit igating the chance of window strikes, one of the more common threats birds face.

The harder the HVAC must work, the more homeowners will pay in energy costs.Old windows also may be points of entry for water and insects. Despite the importance of windows, Money magazine advises that new windows make up only a fraction of the home’s total exterior “envelope,” resulting in only about 5 to 15% of total energy savings.Butthere are still plenty of reasons to invest in new windows.

2. Moisture problems indicate windows need to be replaced. Condensation that shows up as fog ging between double-pane windows or on the inside of windows indicates that the windows are starting to fail.

6. Think about soundproofing, too. When upgrading windows, also think about how certain windows can cancel out noises and make homes more soundproof. Some windows can help reduce outdoor distractions like leaf blowers or lawn mowers.

affordable and durable choice. Home owners also have the option of wood windows with aluminum cladding, which are long-lasting.

To keep energy bills down, think about adding insulation to the attic and basement — which is a good idea even if you are replacing windows.

My mom was no exception. At a young age, she taught me to get in step every year when my great-aunt Miriam sent me a birthday card with crisp $1 bills inside, equaling to my years. Since she lived miles away, I couldn’t just “say” thank you. In stead, Mom shared her stationery and showed me how to write, address and stamp a handwritten note to my great-aunt.Sure,it’seasier nowadays to give thanks with an email or a text, but the handwritten word does so much more. Expressing gratitude with pen on paper says something about how the thankful person went out of his or her way to do something extra spe cial. That’s why Wendy Brown, former video producer and mom of three, is passionate about handwritten thankyou notes. She started her inspiring blog and unique, online paper goods boutique dedicated to the art of handwriting (www.brownink.com).

At the age of five, her mom gave her personalized stationary, and she was hooked. To this day, her prized possessions are shoeboxes filled with letters to and from family, notes to friends and travel journals.

CROSSWORD TIMEPUZZLES

SOLUTIONS

Well, I guess talking baseball with Giants fans still beats discussing politics with someone who does not share your views. After all, baseball is the American pastime.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING Can We Act Responsibly?

It is so ironic that great problems exist in our world but, apparently, they have no connection to any human error. No one seems to be responsible.

It reminds me of my college years here in SoCal. Back in the ’70s we had pretty bad smog in the Santa Clarita Valley, and pretty much everywhere else except the beaches. But, funny thing, you could never find anyone who actually lived where there was smog. We all declared that, while there were faint traces here, the wind actually blew it over to Pasa dena, whose residents insisted the wind blew it to Riverside, where folks de clared that it actually was on its way to San Bernardino. We were all coughing and wheezing but were united in deny ing we lived where there was smog.

with their presence, they can’t imagine why you might be miffed. After all, to impose your time frame on them just isn’t going to work. They march to their own drummer, and the rest of the world will just have to Anotherchill. example is not quite so innocuous. I believe we all have the responsibility to keep our word. When we say we’ll do something, we are obligated to do it. If exigent circumstances arise, we can ad just our obligation but we can’t nullify it; we can communicate and come to a new standard of expectation, but we can’t just throw our responsibility to the wind.

We still give medals to those who, on the battlefield, sacrifice their own wellbeing to save their comrades. Why?

Diane SantaZimmermanClarita

So many more. Really love this last one:

Thank you for every great moment you let us spend with you, Vin.

“The ability to throw 100 mph cannot be taught, cannot be learned, it can only be God-given.”

I could add more examples but you get the point. We stand at a crossroads in our culture. Once there were clearly understood and agreed-upon standards of behavior that included individual responsibility for things like keeping promises, showing up on time, working hard, being honest, caring for the weak, serving your country and loving your neighbors.Todaythere are increasing signs that these standards are losing their value. We are watching as selfishness is repack aged as freedom, and freedom re-de fined in terms of personal autonomy. But it was never meant to be this way. From the beginning of our great American experiment the glue that held our democracy together was our real ization we could only be strong when we held ourselves responsible for the welfare of those around us.

Take, for example, something as simple as arriving on time for an ap pointment. Some folks, like me, are so anal they always get there 10 minutes early. But most today have absolutely no problem arriving 10-20 minutes late. And when they finally do grace you

Because, regardless of how some may consider responsibility too confining, the human heart will always understand the nobility of taking responsibility for others, and the moral value of doing so as the necessary foundation of a healthy society.

I, like Ron Singerman, had a scorebook and kept score at every game my Dad and I listened to together. This amounted to a great number of games and a great number of scorebooks. At the age of 11 I could give you stats on every single Dodger.

In the past few days I have heard some amazing stuff from Giants fans. I was talking with a former business colleague who resides in San Francis co. I told him I just attended a baby shower for my grandson who is expect ed in October. I mentioned I was looking forward to teaching him how to throw and catch a baseball. My colleague’s response was, “Yes, there is noth ing more satisfying in life than to see your grandchild become a Giants fan.” The next day, I attended a Dodger game with a high school friend who is also a Giants fan. He told me he is rooting for the Dodgers and even hopes they win 100 games. He pointed out the Dodgers have won 100 games in a season eight times, but none of those teams won the World Series.

Another tribute to Mr. Vin Scully: First, I want to thank Lois Eisenberg and Ron Singerman for their tributes to this wonderful man who had the ability to bring us ALL together (except Giant fans and a few others). My love for this man began when I was 8 years old. Let’s just say that my Dad and I sat in our patio, each on a hammock with a huge radio between us. (That will give you some idea of how long ago.) Of course, we were fortu nate enough to graduate to TV. Or was that fortunate? Hmm.

So much more I could say but this is about celebrating Vin Scully.

Today it is uncommon to find anyone who will accept responsibility. At the highest levels of government and indus try, hardly anyone ever takes responsi bility for things going wrong.

Jim de Bree Santa Clarita

Sadly, this attitude is filtering down to the most basic levels of daily living. Here’s why: For far too many today, any responsibility placed on them from out side themselves is really a curtailing of their individual liberty. It’s a power play designed to squeeze them into someone else’s reality … and they just won’t stand for such a slave mentality.

“I would always say to kids, don’t be afraid to dream, because it can hap pen.”“Some people die twice: once when they retire, and again when they actu ally pass away. Fear of the first one is a big incentive for me to keep going.”

NO one can ever replace Vin Scully as an announcer. Young announcers need to stop trying to be like him and just be themselves. I think too many ruin their chances by not being natural in their delivery. Vin would have wanted them to be themselves and follow in his great footsteps by loving the game and the fans the way he did.

Those Darn Giants Fans

Below are a few of the Vin Scully quotes I found on “A-Z Quotes”: “As long as you live, keep smiling because it brightens everybody's day.”

Local resident David Hegg is senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church. “Ethically Speaking” appears Sundays.

When someone’s mistake or carelessness or forget fulness or laziness nega tively impacts our lives, we insist on finding and exposing those responsible. Yet, when the situation is reversed, and we are on the accusatory end of the pointed finger, we often deny, shift, or otherwise attempt to escape responsibility. Mistakes exist, but it wasn’t me!

“I was saying on the air: ‘Victorino used the Twitter and he sent a twit to tell the fans he was coming.’ Well, the city went hysterical. The sky nearly fell down from laughter. I always thought that if you are going to use Twitter, it's going to be a twit. Why would it be a tweet?”
