Bring Optimistic Content to Your Social Media Feeds
“During the past decade, online social networking has caused profound changes in the way people communicate and interact. …Several studies have indicated that the prolonged use of social networking sites (SNS), such as Facebook, may be related to signs and symptoms of depression.”
— National Library of Medicine
For many Gen Z-ers, scrolling on social media has become a primary source of entertainment and a tool for staying connected. In fact, the majority of Gen Z Americans report going on at least one social media platform each day.
Reasons for turning to social media include combatting boredom (66%), the desire to laugh or smile (59%) or to see what’s happening in the world (49%).
However, often, when scrolling, the content isn’t necessarily what you were looking for — or worse, it causes stress or anxiety. In fact, over half of GenZers (53%) said they are frustrated because what they see on their social media feeds doesn’t match what they want to see and just as many (54%) believe they have either “some,” “little,” or “no control at all” over the content that pops up on their feeds. This data, from a new survey by LG Electronics and conducted by Talker Research, found 62% of Gen Z-ers wish they could just reset their feeds and start all over. The survey also found 73% of respondents associate at least one social media platform with a negative impact on their mental health. According to social media expert and associate professor Casey Fiesler, Ph.D., algorithms play a significant role in the content you see, so understanding how they work is key to improving your feed.
“Algorithms are recommendations that determine what you see on social media by predicting content you’re likely to engage with based on past engagement,” said Fiesler. “These algorithms can send you down ever more specific niches — for good and bad. When left unchecked, you can quickly go down negative rabbit holes and encounter harmful content. The good news? You do have some control over the input for these algorithms: by choosing to engage with optimistic content, you’ll probably see more of it.”
Increasing optimistic content in your feeds
One way to improve your algorithm to include more positive content is to avoid engaging with negative content, and making a point to engage with content you actually want to see.
To help everyone have a positive experience and regain some control of social media feeds, LG created a global playlist called “Optimism Your Feed,” which is designed to bring more positivity to your social media feed.
“Optimism Your Feed” is part of LG’s Life’s Good campaign, introduced last year to inspire and encourage people to approach life with an optimistic attitude. Created in collaboration with global influencers renowned for their positive outlook, including Tina Choi, Victoria Browne and Josh Harmon,
the playlist includes over 20 short-form videos full of motivational messages and feel-good content.
“When you see content on your feed that improves your mood, such as LG’s ‘Optimism Your Feed’ playlist, give it extra attention,” said Fiesler. “’Like’ the content and leave positive comments on your favorite posts or videos. Giving upbeat, optimistic posts increased engagement means you’re more likely to see positive content like that in the future.”
How to Get Started
Nothing feels better than taking back a little control, so take action to make the time you spend on social media what you wanted it to be - opportunities to check in with friends, see what’s happening in your community and get a little lift to brighten your day.
LG’s global playlist gives you opportunities to see positive, uplifting posts every time you check out your social media. By being more conscious about what you choose to engage with, you can have more optimism, balance and happiness in your life. It’s easy to start engaging with positive content today! Just go to LG’s global TikTok channel @ lge_lifesgood or YouTube channel @LGGlobal to check out the videos and subscribe if you like what you see. End of Summer Fun
By Michele E. Buttelman
Signal Staff Writer
The three-day Labor Day Weekend is considered the unofficial end of “summer” because kids are back in school and summer vacation season is winding down.
The calendar lists Sept. 22 as the first official day of autumn, but in the Santa Clarita Valley summer really is determined by the thermometer.
Our summer can last well into October, and even November.
We know when it is “fall” when pumpkin spice latte season is right around the corner.
The good news is there is still time in September to enjoy a few “end of summer” flings before October rings in the “witching hour.”
The Ventura Art & Chalk Festival

The festival features more than 50 chalk artists and crafts people transforming Ventura Harbor Village with vibrant color along the waterfront.
Watch as expert artists from across California and beyond create vivid, large-scale murals along the seaside promenade.
Among the featured artists is Greg Wray, known for his iconic work on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. Wray will be crafting a Sonic-themed beach scene, inviting spectators to observe his process and engage with him during the creation.
The event will also feature the Craftsman’s Marketplace. Discover and purchase original works from California artists, including paintings, ceramics, photography, glasswork, handmade wooden toys and wearable art.

End of Summer Whale Watching
In addition to humans, a few other species will move on from summer in SoCal including blue whales and fin whales. The peak season for blue and fin whales in Southern California is mid-June through mid-September. The blue whales come to the coast to feed on krill.
Humpback whales can be seen off the coast of Southern California throughout the year, but the best time is from mid-May through mid-November. The peak season for humpbacks is typically July through September, when they come to the area to feed.
An end of summer whale-watching expedition is a great way to put an exclamation point on summer 2024.
There are a large number of companies that specialize in whale-watching excursions along the coast of California.
Be sure to research the company you choose for your end of summer adventure carefully. Get Out of the Heat VisitSanDiego.com
If you’re done with summer and tired of the hear, take an end of summer mini vacation to one of the coolest places in SoCal, San Diego.
San Diego remains within a comfortable temperature range between approximately 50 and 75 degrees all year long. The opportunities for entertainment are seemingly endless.
Among the experiences you can have in San Diego:
• Take a sunset sail around San Diego Harbor, watch the sunset, view sea lions and seals and get a unique perspective of the city skyline.
• Explore the 1,200-acre Balboa Park with an entire Spanish-style village of museums, galleries and gardens.
• Discover Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. It is San Diego’s oldest town and the first European settlement in California.
• Travel to Italy without leaving San Diego. Visit the neighborhood of Little Italy, a trendy pedestrian area full of restaurants, bars, music venues and boutiques.
• Visit Windansea Beach just south of downtown La Jolla. It is known for its unique mix of sandy beach and rocky cliffs. Take a photo of the iconic Windansea Surf Shack. It looks like four pillars with a thatched roof perched on a rock, but it’s actually one of the oldest and most well-known beach landmarks in San Diego.

If you love theater then attending a performance at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon has probably been near the top of your bucket list.
Many will remember Will Geer as the patriarch of “The Waltons,” a popular CBS-TV show from 1972-81, but Geer was also one of the victims of the McCarthy era blacklisting of writers, directors, singers, actors and others in the entertainment field during the 1950s.
Relocating to an acreage in Topanga, Geer established a theater for similarly blacklisted actors and folk singers on the property. The Theatricum Botanicum was born.
The Cold Truth: Cold Brew vs. Iced Coffee
Cold brew and iced coffee are the go-to choices for those seeking a refreshing caffeine fix. But what sets these two beloved beverages apart? Lisette Gaviña Lopez, fourth-generation coffee roaster at Gaviña Coffee Company, makers of Don Francisco’s Coffee, reveals the cold truth and shares simple tips to create these cool concoctions at home.
The Art of Iced Coffee
A key difference between iced coffee and cold brew lies in how they’re made. “Iced coffee is simply double-strength brewed coffee,” explains Gaviña Lopez. “You brew it hot as usual but use twice the amount of grounds for the same amount of water.”
While some may be tempted to brew hot coffee and let it cool overnight for a quick fix the next day, Gaviña Lopez warns that this can jeopardize the taste and vitality of the coffee. Instead, she recommends brewing a fresh cup each time, letting it cool to room temperature, and then adding cream, sugar, or other condiments. Pour it into a cocktail shaker with ice (if you have one), then pour the cooled coffee over fresh ice. Voila! “This will result in a perfectly aromatic, flavorful, and evenly mixed cool coffee drink every time,” she says. Pro tip: Prefreeze coffee ice cubes to prevent the drink from getting watered down too quickly.
Cold Brew: A Smooth, Complex Character
Cold brew, on the other hand, requires a slowbrew method that replaces heat with time to unlock its bolder, smoother taste.
“Instead of using water just below boiling temperature to brew through a filter for four to six minutes, cold brew is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee at room temperature or in a refrigerator for 18 to 24 hours. It’s then filtered through a paper, mesh, or cheesecloth to remove solids,” adds Gaviña Lopez.
This process creates a concentrate with a unique flavor profile, which you can adjust by adding more water. Cold brew is less acidic and has a brighter, fuller flavor than iced coffee, pairing nicely with milk, cream, or sugar for added indulgence.
Start with the Basics: Quality is Key
Gaviña Lopez emphasizes the importance of using fresh, high-quality coffee to achieve the perfect cup. She notes, “Coffee is two ingredients, water and coffee, so it’s important to have the highest quality of both.”
Don Francisco’s Coffee offers a variety of whole bean and ground options in different flavors and brewing methods, including pods, espresso capsules, and its Organic Cold Brew. “Don Francisco’s Organic Cold Brew Coffee kit simplifies everything. With pre-portioned pitcher packs of ground coffee, just steep them in a glass pitcher for 24 hours, and voilà! You’re ready to enjoy a perfectly brewed cup of cold brew,” added the fourth-generation coffee roaster.
Made with 100% Arabica beans and roasted to perfection, Don Francisco’s cold brew offers a balanced, velvety smoothness with every sip.
The Final Sip: A Matter of Personal Preference
Ultimately, the choice between iced coffee and cold brew boils down to personal preference. With a little knowledge and experimentation, you can unlock the secrets of both brewing methods and find new ways to enjoy your favorite beverage.
Cold Brew Spritzer
Makes six 8-ounce servings
Ingredients
2 pitcher packs Don Francisco’s Organic Cold Brew coffee
4 cups fresh cold filtered water
Directions
Steep 2 pitcher packs of Don Francisco’s Organic Cold Brew coffee with 4 cups of water in a glass pitcher, close tightly with lid and store in the refrigerator. After 24 hours, carefully remove the cold brew pitcher packs from the cold brew concentrate. Dilute the concentrate with tonic water and lemon flavored sparkling water. Serve over ice and garnish with fresh rosemary sprig and lemon peel.
Celebrate Your Four-Legged Friend
While most dog owners need little reason to celebrate their furry family members, Aguust is National Dog Month and it provides a perfect opportunity to show pets a little extra love.
Established in 2004 by the Animal Miracle Network and International Association of Pet Sitters, the month-long celebration promotes responsible pet ownership and honors dogs of all breeds and sizes. Consider these ways you can get involved:
Adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization
Organize a dog-friendly event in your community, such as a dog walk or pet parade
Donate dog food, toys or supplies to a local animal shelter
Volunteer at a rescue organization or shelter
To take it one step further and help dogs in need in your community, reach out to local pet-focused organizations and see how you can help.
Support Local Shelters
Supporting local shelters by donating money, supplies or your time can aid in the well-being of dogs in your community. Consider organizing a fundraising event or a donation drive to collect essential items for the shelter, such as food, bedding or toys. You can also help spread the word about the importance of adopting dogs from shelters and encourage others to do the same.
Promote Responsible Pet Ownership
Lead by example by being a responsible dog owner yourself through showing love, care and respect
for your furry companion. Encourage spaying and neutering to prevent shelter overpopulation and educate yourself and others about the responsibilities that come with dog ownership, such as providing proper nutrition, regular veterinary care and training.
Take Advantage of Volunteer Opportunities
There are many ways to help dogs in need, such as volunteering your time at a local animal shelter or rescue organization, assisting adoption events, walking dogs, cleaning kennels or helping with other essential tasks. If you have specific skills or expertise, you may also consider volunteering as a dog trainer, groomer or foster pet parent.

In Honor of National Dog Month, the Top Breeds Rated by State
By Ashley Kilroy Signal Contributing Writer
American families adore their four-legged companions. Approximately two-thirds of U.S. households own a dog, and a staggering 85% of dog owners consider their pets a part of their family. It’s undeniable that Americans hold a deep affection for their furry friends. While certain breeds are more common than others, we were intrigued to discover which ones are the most favored in America.
Forbes Advisor surveyed 10,000 dog owners across the country to find out which breeds rank supreme in the U.S. Our survey options encompassed the top 25 most popular breeds nationwide, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).
As it turns out, many Americans
are unbiased when it comes to dogs. The largest percentage of respondents reported that “no breed in particular” is their favorite (13%). However, Australian shepherds ranked as the top favorite dog breed, followed by German shepherds and bulldogs.
With 65.1 million U.S. households owning at least one dog, International Dog Day (August 26) is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our many furry friends. While a wide variety of breeds can make wonderful companions, some breeds are more favored than others
Key findings from our study:
Bernese Mountain dogs, Boston terriers and boxers round out the top three most favored breeds in California.
Labrador retrievers, Siberian huskies, Yorkshire terriers, miniature schnauzers, Great Danes, Hava-
nese and Pembroke Welsh corgis ranked as California’s least favorite dog breeds (with no California residents selecting these breeds as their favorite).
Two shepherds ranked as the nation’s favorite breeds: the Australian shepherd (#1) and the German Shepherd (#2)
The German shepherd ranked as the No. 1 favored dog breed in 16 states (at times tying with another breed for the top spot), the highest number study wide. However, this breed ranked second most favored nationwide.
Havanese ranked as the least favored breed in most U.S. states (33 total, at times tying with other breeds for the bottom spot).
America’s second least-favored dog breed was the German shorthaired pointer followed by the Welsh corgi. The top reason why respondents selected a breed as their favorite was because they currently own the breed or have in the past (52%). Thinking the dog could be a good companion (50%) was the second-most favored reason.
Remembering Young Lives Lost at the Evening of Remembrance
By Ken Striplin Santa Clarita City Manager
The Youth Grove is a solemn place within Central Park (27150 Bouquet Canyon Road) where pillars shaped like tree stumps circle around a center monument. Each pillar represents one of 119 young lives lost in traffic-related incidents and symbolize a life cut short. The central monument urges the community to “Know More” about safe driving habits and to pledge that “No More” young lives will be lost in traffic collisions.
These features give the Youth Grove the feeling of a sanctuary for reflection, a place to share stories of those who have been lost and to reaffirm our shared commitment to traffic safety. Each year, residents, City officials, law enforcement and families gather here for the Evening of Remembrance to promote safe driving practices, honor the youth we have lost and reflect on the impact these tragedies have had not only on their families, but on our community as well.
This year’s Evening of Remembrance will take place on Wednesday, August 28, commencing with
the Walk of Remembrance at 7:15 p.m. This communal walk, which offers support and comfort to families who have suffered profound loss, both starts and concludes at the Youth Grove, where everyone will then come together for a heartfelt ceremony.
One of the most impactful moments during Evening of Remembrance is the “Forever Young” slideshow presentation. This is when we honor and remember those young lives lost. As images of these youth appear in the slideshow, we are starkly reminded of their dreams, their smiles and the void they left behind in the lives and hearts of their loved ones. This also serves as a reminder to
our community that traffic safety is a responsibility we all share equally and demands diligence from everyone on the road, whether they are drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. Youth involvement is a crucial part of this event. Students share personal stories about the friends they have lost and how traffic incidents have affected their lives.
The Youth Grove is more than just a memorial. It is a stark call to action and a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible driving. As our community gathers to honor the young lives lost during the Evening of Remembrance, we not only remember those who have been tragically taken too soon, but also renew our commitment to promoting safer driving practices. Through collective vigilance and continued dialogue, we can strive to prevent future lives lost and ensure that the memory of those honored at the Youth Grove lives on through our actions.

Take Advantage of COOL EVENINGS and Eat Al Fresco
Bright sunshine, warm patios and fresh foods go hand in hand. As warm weather and sunny days call you outdoors, bring the whole family along with favorite meals that blend perfectly with a soft breeze and the subtle sounds of nature.
Al fresco dining doesn’t have to be difficult. Just gather a few supplies, whip up a favorite recipe or two and ask for a hand in heading outside. Take these tips into account to help ensure your backyard dining goes off without a hitch.
Create a Cozy Spot
Dinner in the backyard means convenience and the comfort of your own patio furniture, but you can always enhance the experience with an umbrella to add a touch of shade or a small fan on those still, steamy evenings. If a busy day means a later dinner, hanging strings of soft lighting can help illuminate the table.
Make It Fresh
Salad season means fresh ingredients from lettuce and veggies to favorite toppings and beyond. Add a crisp bite to your next al fresco occasion with this Southwest Ranch Taco Salad featuring Newman’s Own’s Southwest Ranch Dressing. The dressing is creamy and smoky with a kick of spice and features no artificial flavors, no colors from artificial sources and no MSG, making it a perfect companion for salads and dips. In fact, you can enjoy this seasonal salad even more knowing that 100% of profits from the sale of the dressing goes toward helping nourish and transform the lives of children facing adversity.
Don’t Forget the Essentials
No outdoor meal is complete without a few must-have utensils. Avoid trips back and forth
from the house by writing a list of everything you need so you don’t head to the deck without forks to share a salad or napkins to help clean up the mess. Bring the basics like plates, cups, utensils, napkins and a cloth to rest food on. Don’t leave behind serving spoons, trash bags and other convenience items that make al fresco dining a breeze.
Serve a Perfect Salad Partner
While a hearty salad alone is enough for a filling al fresco meal, you can take your backyard dining to the next level with the perfect partner for satisfying salads: crudites. Arranged neatly on a platter or board, a seasonal variety of sliced or whole raw vegetables such as snap peas, celery, carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, mini bell peppers, broccoli and more can make for a perfect accompaniment to nearly any outdoor meal. Serve with a dip or two, such as Newman’s Own’s Southwest Ranch Dressing, to complete your al fresco appetizer.

Zoe Kravitz Shows She’s a Real Talent With ‘Blink Twice’
By Richard Roeper Signal Contributing Writer
‘Blink Twice’
1/2 (out of four)
Amazon MGM Studios presents a film directed by Zoe Kravitz and written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum. Rated R (for strong violent content, sexual assault, drug use and language throughout). In theaters.
Zoe Kravitz’s “Blink Twice” is a radical blend of trippy and unnerving social satire and blood-spattered horror, with Kravitz taking a big swing in her feature directorial debut and connecting with bone-rattling impact. It is a film that takes one big leap after another and sticks the landing far more often than not.
With Kravitz also one of the producers and co-writing the screenplay with E.T. Feigenbaum, “Blink Twice” could be described as “Don’t
Worry Darling,” let’s look at “The Menu” and see if there’s a “Glass Onion,” and then we’ll “Get Out.” Kravitz is a showbiz legacy kid who grew up loving movies and has turned in fine work in the “Diver-
gent” and “Fantastic Beasts” series and “The Batman,” as well as TV projects such as “Big Little Lies” and “High Fidelity,” and her love for striking visuals and bold editing, as well as her appreciation for juicysmart dialogue — it’s all evident here. This is a great-looking film, even when things get memorably, horrifically ugly.
Naomi Ackie is Frida, an aspiring nail designer who is working a gig as a server at a lavish fundraiser when she has a rom-com meet-cute with the dashing and handsome tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum), who has been on an Apology Tour and is trying to rehab his image after being “canceled” for unnamed act(s). Claiming to be reformed and turning over a new leaf, Slater has purchased his own private island with a farm-to-table-meets”Saltburn” vibe, where he regularly entertains a close circle of friends and associates, so they can get away from it all. When Slater invites Frida to accompany him to the island and Frida’s best friend, Jess (Alia Shawkat), is allowed to come along, they jump at the opportunity, no questions asked.
That might have been a mistake.

The island features an architecturally striking main property with an expansive outdoor pool and lush greenery, as well as a staff of workers who skulk about in unsettling fashion. There are some early indications all might not be as wonderful as it seems, e.g., all guests must hand over their cellphones, and the women are given matching outfits to wear. When Slater says, “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do,” you can’t help but wonder: Why would he even say that? Jess cracks to Frida, “So do you think the human sacrifice is before or after dinner?” But it’s just a joke. Promise.
Christian Slater is Vic, Slater’s right-hand man, Simon Rex is Slater’s childhood friend, Cody, who cooks up gourmet meals every night, and Haley Joel Osment is
the rather hapless Tom. As the men do male-bonding stuff, the women drink champagne and smoke pot and lounge by the pool, with Frida and Jess joining Adria Arjona’s Sarah, a reality star on a show called “Survivor Babes,” as well as Liz Caribel’s Camilla and Trew Mullen’s Heather. Every once in a while, we get an appearance from Geena Davis’ Stacy, who is Slater’s assistant and his sister and is always carrying red gift bags and seems on the verge of a complete meltdown, and Kyle MacLachlan’s Rich, and whatever he’s up to, we don’t trust him. As the days and nights of partying blend into one another, the sense of something awful lurking becomes stronger and stronger. One character has a scar, another is missing a finger, and another seems to vanish, and why is there dirt under Frida’s fingernails when she wakes up in the morning? The social satire about toxic men, and women who instantly treat each other as rivals before realizing they’re in this thing together, and the oblivious narcissism of the obscenely rich, gives way to all-out horror in the third act.
Other than one fairly deep plot hole, the gonzo storyline actually makes sense, although the twists come so fast and furious at the end that we need to take a beat to sort it all out as the credits roll. “Blink Twice” makes great use of the terrific cast, with Ackie and Arjona delivering particularly powerful work and Tatum turning his natural charm sideways. With this first film, Kravitz serves notice she is a true talent who is coming for us, and I mean that in the best possible way. I cannot wait to see what she does next.
Six Natural Ways to Help Protect Your Health
Natural and plant-based remedies have been around for centuries, and for everyday treatments like minor cuts, scrapes and rashes, they can have real benefits. In fact, the global herbal medicine market is expected to reach $342 billion by 2030, according to a forecast by Research and Markets.
In North America, a green movement is spurring a large share of this growth, with consumers more inclined toward natural and plant-based medicines. Concerns about side effects, long-term impact and safety also affect the choices people are making when it comes to treating their medical concerns.
“Natural and plant-based remedies have been around for centuries, treating everything from common cold symptoms to dressing wounds and caring for injuries,” said Dr. Billy Goldberg, a New York Times’ bestselling author and emergency room physician. “As people increasingly turn to more natural tried-and-true ingredients, some companies are taking note and beginning to incorporate them into products that provide the healing power of nature.”
Goldberg and the first-aid experts at CURAD, which have made adhesive bandages since 1951, offer these suggestions for natural common ingredients that can help protect your health:
Vitamin E Studies by the National Institute on Health have shown that vitamin E helps soothe and support skin during the healing process. Vitamin E may also help promote immunity and prevent arterial blood clots.
Aloe Vera Few things soothe sunburn like aloe vera. With analgesic, anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, aloe vera gel helps reduce pain and inflammation. Also helpful in the healing process of cuts and scrapes, the CURAD Naturals line of adhesive bandages are infused with aloe vera in the wound pad and surface of the bandage, which is enriched with the antioxidant vitamin E to help soothe and moisturize skin.
Garlic Used for centuries for wound healing, garlic extract has been found to improve healing time and decrease rate of infection. Ingesting garlic may also head off symptoms of the common cold and help reduce blood pressure.
Baking Soda Bicarbonate of soda, commonly known as baking soda, can be used for more than baking. From removing stains to cleaning teeth and more, it can also be used to help treat a variety of wounds. In addition to being an odor absorber, it can be applied to insect stings and bites, such as
those from bees or mosquitoes.
Whether making a paste using baking soda and water then applying to the bite or using an option like CURAD Naturals adhesive bandages featuring baking soda, the chemical compound can help soothe skin. In addition to absorbing wound odor, the bandages provide skin-friendly comfort and stretch with a four-sided seal to keep dirt and germs out.
Honey Sweet and highly acidic, honey’s antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it a good choice for dressing wounds since it encourages healing and prevents infections. Honey may also help soothe coughs.
Charcoal Activated charcoal may have an antibacterial effect by absorbing harmful microbes from wounds. Similarly, it can be used to treat poisoning or drug overdose and may help with digestive problems. It’s also thought to play a role in lowering cholesterol and improving kidney function, and some dental care products use it as a whitening agent.

“Brushing your puppy’s teeth early on not only keeps them healthy but also supports a strong bond between pet and pet parent,” says Harris.
It’s important to establish teeth brushing as part of your puppy’s routine early on. Using flavored dog toothpaste (never human toothpaste!) and a soft-bristled toothbrush or a finger brush can help ease the process.
You may not be able to do a full toothbrushing session at first, but you can start by brushing your puppy’s teeth for a few seconds every day and work them up to a full session. Beginning a toothbrushing routine may also help reduce stress for potential future teeth cleanings at the vet. Remember to praise and reward them during and after brushing.
Offer Chew Toys or Dental Chews
Around the time you take your puppy homeusually 12-16 weeks — they’ll be teething. As they lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth come in, they’ll follow their instincts to chew.
While this instinct keeps their teeth clean, it

Tips to Care For Outdoor Cats
Pet preferences vary across the world, but dogs and cats are beloved companion animals in many corners of the globe. According to the 2022 Statista Global Consumer Survey, dogs have a good lead over their feline counterparts in the United States, mainland China, the United Kingdom, and Japan. However, in Germany, cats and dogs are kept by a nearly equal number of pet owners.
Even though cats may not be as popular as dogs, they are widely found in homes. They also may be spending time outside of homes. While there are plenty of feral cats, or those that have grown up outdoors with little to no social interaction with humans, even many domesticated cats spend ample time outdoors.
Most veterinarians feel it is safer to keep cats indoors, where they are not exposed to disease or trauma. However, many cats are simply not happy without fresh air. In such instances, here’s how pet parents can care for cats who need some breathing room.
Leash-Train the Cat
The American Humane Society suggests leash-training cats that want to be outdoors. Much like having a dog on a leash prevents the pet from running off and getting lost or injured, cats who may be a little too independent for their own good can be curtailed with leashes.
Vaccinate and Fix
Cats that are exposed to the outdoors are more susceptible to diseases that can be harmful or even fatal. Speak with a vet about which vaccines the
cat will require if he or she is going to be spending considerable time outdoors.
Also, while it is recommended for all companion animals to be spayed or neutered, it is especially important for those with access to the outdoors to prevent unwanted mating that can exacerbate overpopulation issues. Plus, animals that are fixed are less likely to roam or fight.
Create a Shelter
In addition to providing free access to the home

by way of a cat door, outdoor access cats may benefit from a home in the yard. This can protect the cat from weather or other animals. A pet owner can build a shelter or purchase pre-made varieties that resemble a chicken coop. It’s also best to ensure cats have access to fresh water while outside. Regularly inspect the shelter to keep it clean and in good repair.
Consider a “Catio”
Some cats will be satisfied with something that lets fresh air in without having to be completely outdoors. A “catio” is an outdoor ledge or enclosure for cats that is covered by grating or mesh, according to Habitat Have. It can be attached to a window or be freestanding in an area of the yard, providing a lounging spot that is outdoors but protected.
Provide Identification
Cat caregivers can microchip cats and ensure they are wearing the proper identification. If the cat cannot find its way home, there is a greater chance the animal will be found if identification is present or a chip has been installed.
Although cats are safest indoors, with some precautions, cats can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. (MC)

could lead to your dog chewing on household items.
You can get ahead of negative chewing behavior by offering your puppy chew toys that are appropriate in size and don’t pose a choking hazard. Rubber dog toys with ridges or nubs are a great option for your pup, as they help remove plaque during chewing.
Dental chews are another great way to invest in your puppy’s oral health while providing a tasty treat. When choosing a chew for your fourlegged friend, consider an option like Purina DentaLife Puppy Teething Chews.
“DentaLife Puppy Teething Chews can help establish a healthy dental routine by supporting a puppy’s natural drive to chew and their mental engagement,” said Harris. “The chews safely redirect chewing behavior during peak teething age, around 3+ months old, when puppies’ adult teeth emerge.”
DentaLife Puppy Teething Chews are a great tool for puppy parents to support their new pet through the teething stage and build up healthy dental habits. Designed and formulated by Purina animal care experts, they also contain DHA,
EPA and calcium to support your puppy’s developing brain, teeth and bones.
Schedule Professional Dental
Cleaning
As your puppy grows and develops, it’s important to explore when your pup should get their first professional dental cleaning, as recommendations vary across breeds. During a cleaning, your vet can examine your pup’s teeth and gums for disease and remove hardened tartar. They’ll also be able to help you address any issues they find so you can keep your best friend happy and healthy for years to come.
Remember, establishing good dental habits as a puppy can set them up for dental success down the road. Using these three expert tips, you’ll be well on your way to keeping your puppy’s smile healthy and bright. (BPT)
Transform a Living Room Into a Go-To Viewing Space
Watch parties are wildly popular. Whether it’s a gathering for the big game or a group of friends anxious to see the latest episode of a favorite television show, watch parties have become a fun way to enjoy special events with family and friends.
Many bars and restaurants have recognized the popularity of watch parties and looked to capitalize on the trend, particularly for sporting events. Watch parties can make for a fun night out, but homeowners can do much to make their own living room a go-to spot for the next big game or series finale.
Seating
Expand seating space, if necessary. Of course, guests for the big game or movie night will need a place to sit.
Homeowners who love to host can determine their ideal gathering size and then work to ensure their entertaining space has enough seats to ac-
commodate everyone.
Multifunctional furniture can help if space is limited. For example, some stools that are typically used as footrests can be repurposed as seats when guests arrive and an upholstered cof-
fee table can provide an additional space for guests to sit.
Another option is to work with a contractor to add a built-in window seat or bench beneath a picture window.
Room Conversion
Convert an existing space into an open floor plan. A 2023 survey from Rocket HomesSM found that more than half of individuals surveyed preferred open layouts to traditional layouts.
Open layouts can make living spaces feel more airy and less claustrophobic, and such designs also make it easy to accommodate more guests. Homeowners can speak with a local contractor to determine ways to convert living spaces into open floor plans.
Internet Strength
the living room to reduce the risk of streaming interruptions.
Lighting
Reconsider your lighting scheme. If movie nights or television shows dominate your watch party schedule, some recessed lighting in the living room can reduce glare and reflections on the screen once a movie or show begins.
Recessed lighting above a mounted television can illuminate the screen so everyone can see it but won’t appear in the screen and adversely affect what viewers can see.
Upgrade Your Television
Consider upgrading your television and sound. It goes without saying that a television is wildly important when hosting a watch party.
Invest in your internet. Whereas cable television used to be the go-to option when watching sports, movies and television at home, streaming platforms have now taken over, as many, including Peacock, Amazon Prime and Netflix, are now even broadcasting National Football League games.
Homeowners who want to host watch parties must invest in highspeed internet and perhaps even a new router to ensure games and shows are not interrupted by the dreaded spinning wheel or issues that can arise if internet speeds are slow. If necessary, relocate the router to
The experts at Best Buy note that 8K resolution is the highest resolution available in the television market. Such devices provide an extraordinary viewing experience, but they also can stretch homeowners’ budgets.
A 4K television won’t cost nearly as much, and these devices also provide superior image quality. When a new television is paired with a premium soundbar, viewers can settle in for a memorable game day or movie night experience.
Homeowners can embrace various strategies to make watch parties an extraordinary experience for themselves and their guests. (MC)
Stay Ahead of Medicare Fraudsters
Every day, criminals target older Americans with one goal — to steal their Medicare numbers and other protected health information. To fraudsters, this information is just as valuable as credit card information.
These criminals steal Medicare numbers and unlawfully bill Medicare for medical services that were never provided to the patient or overbill for provided services.
When criminals commit fraud, and falsely bill Medicare, people’s medical records may become inaccurate and they can suffer delayed or even be denied care. In the end, Medicare fraud costs taxpayers billions of dollars every year. Each dollar lost to fraud takes away resources intended for people with Medicare.
Protect Yourself
Fraudsters are getting creative and new scams are continually emerging. The best thing you can do is beware of people who contact you for your Medicare number or other personal information.
You may be contacted by phone, text or email by someone posing as a Medicare representative, a health care provider or even a medical equipment company. If someone you don’t know asks for your Medicare number, hang up or delete the message — this is a scam.
Consider these tips to help protect yourself against Medicare fraud and stay one step ahead of fraudsters:
• Guard your Medicare card just like your Social Security card and credit card.
• Only share your Medicare information with your trusted health care providers.
• Be skeptical of free gifts, free medical services, discount packages or any offer that sounds too good to be true.
• Always check your Medicare claims statements to make sure they are accurate. Call 1-800-MEDICARE if you suspect you or Medicare has been billed for a service you did not receive.
Medicare Hospice Fraud
Beware of scammers offering older Americans in-home perks, like free cooking, cleaning and home health services, while they are unknowingly being signed up for hospice services. The scammers then unlawfully bill Medicare for these services in your name.
Criminals are using every avenue they can to sign you up including door-to-door visits, false advertising, phone, text and email. Hospice care is for people who are terminally ill and only you and your doctor can make this serious decision if you need endof-life care.
Remember this advice to avoid hospice scams:
• Your doctor is the only one who can certify you’re terminally ill (with a life expectancy of 6 months or less). If you are not terminally ill, you should not receive hospice care.
• Never accept perks or gifts in return for signing up for hospice services.
• Medicare will never provide “free” services like housekeeping.
• Be suspicious if someone offers you free services like housekeeping or cooking in return for your Medicare number.
• Medicare will never come to your home.
Report Medicare Fraud
Reporting Medicare fraud protects you and millions of other people with Medicare and those with disabilities. If you or someone you know has experienced Medicare fraud or suspect an offer you’ve received is a scam, report it as soon as possible. You will never be in trouble for reporting fraud.
To learn more, visit Medicare.gov/ fraud. To report potential fraud, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227).

Genetic Testing Should Be Mandatory
As science progresses, so too should our expectations for what it means to responsibly plan for a family. Yet, despite the undeniable power of genetic testing to prevent suffering, many see it as optional. I argue genetic testing should not just be encouraged but mandated for all prospective parents. The stakes are too high, both for individual families and society at large, to leave this crucial decision to chance.
The surge in gene therapy breakthroughs, such as FDA approval of treatments for sickle cell disease, has thrust genetic disorders into the public eye. These advancements underscore the potential of genetic medicine, but also highlight a glaring gap in our approach to family planning. If we have the technology to foresee and prevent transmission of serious genetic disorders, why aren’t we using it broadly? Why allow ignorance to shape the lives of future generations?
Consider Sarah and Mark, who, like many hopeful parents, dreamed of a healthy child. Their hopes were clouded by a dark family history: Huntington’s disease. Genetic testing revealed a 50% chance their child could inherit this devastating condition. This, while difficult to hear, empowered them to make informed decisions. Without it, they might have unknowingly brought a child into the world to face an uncertain, painful future. This isn’t just about Sarah and Mark. It’s about all parents, and the moral obligation we have to ensure our children are given the best possible start in life. Making genetic testing mandatory might seem extreme, but it’s a logical step in a world where personalized medicine is becoming the norm. It’s not just about identifying risks. It’s about preventing unnecessary suffering. Carrier testing, for example, can uncover hidden mutations both parents might pass down, leading to conditions like cystic fibrosis or Tay-Sachs disease. Shouldn’t every parent know if their child is at risk? Opponents will argue that mandatory testing infringes on personal freedom and could lead to difficult ethical choices, such as pregnancy termination. The alternative is far more troubling. Ethical challenges should not deter us from pursuing a compassionate goal: the reduction of human suffering.
Genetic testing is simpler and more accessible than ever before. A quick blood draw or saliva sample can unlock a world of information.
Despite these advances, genetic testing remains underutilized, often due to misconceptions about its necessity or cost. By making it mandatory, we eliminate these barriers and ensure that every child has a fair chance at a healthy life. The societal benefits are significant. Reducing the incidence of genetic disorders could alleviate a tremendous burden on our health care system, freeing up resources for other critical needs. In an era where health care costs are skyrocketing, preventive measures like genetic testing are a public health imperative. As a UCLA researcher specializing in health care, I’ve seen firsthand the difference that informed decision-making can make for families. The peace of mind that comes from understanding one’s genetic risks is invaluable. It’s time we extend this peace of mind to all prospective parents, not just those who can afford it or are aware of the option. The future of family planning should not be left to chance. This is not just about science — it’s about responsibility, compassion and the kind of world we want to build for the next generation.

On Societal Conscience
By David Hegg
Several events around the nation have led pundits and observers alike to label specific actions “unconscionable.” The word defines what is considered unreasonable, unsuitable, or excessive. To engage in “unconscionable” activity is to go beyond the restraints of a reasonable person’s conscience.
The assumption is that a “societal conscience” sets our culture’s standard for reasonable behavior. We are hearing more and more about it. Manufacturing companies must have an “environmental conscience.” In contrast, those firms that handle our investments have a “moral conscience” that defines their fiduciary responsibility to use our money in a way that conforms to the highest standards of honest business practice. We expect our teachers to have a confident, conscientious attitude toward students, as must doctors toward patients. Each area of society still holds to a certain standard of behavior, and we often refer to it in terms of conscience.
But increasingly, specific displays of conscience are being condemned. When Harrison Butker, punter for the Kansas City Chiefs, dared to affirm that female graduates who chose to dedicate themselves to being great wives and mothers were walking a path of honor, he was soundly upbraided and his ideology labeled unconscionable. And when a bill was introduced in Congress mandating that only American citizens could vote in our elections, detractors said such a thing was unconscionable. And throughout the political run-up to Nov. 5, “unconscionable” is thrown around like rice at a wedding reception.
Maybe the problem is we need to understand more about a conscience. This may help. A person’s conscience is like an alarm clock. You set it, and then it aligns its action – waking you up! – with how you programmed it. The human conscience works the same way even though the newborn conscience has a few things already programmed. For example, you don’t have to program a baby to cry when something is wrong. Neither is it necessary to program their anger when something is taken away from them. These, and other things, come pre-installed on the human hard drive. But, as we grow, we learn to program our
consciences according to the ethical standards of families, friends and society. More to the point, as we become independent individuals, we often reprogram our sense of right and wrong, honorable and dishonorable, acceptable and unacceptable according to what we want or how we feel. What we’re seeing today is a clash of consciences that is, in reality, a clash of underlying ideologies. We are a severely divided country because our citizens have programmed their consciences to allow and endorse competing ideas of morality, honesty and unity.
My question is: Why is it that, in a country that is proud of its pluralism, a conscientious position with generations of historical standing can be openly mocked and criticized with the language of hate and contempt? In contrast, new ethical positions clearly in the minority receive the stamp of conscientious approval.
We are watching our national conscience become hijacked by those driven by feeling rather than thought, by immediate personal desire rather than corporate well-being. Look around, and you will see that the passion of the moment is becoming the accepted ethic as historical standards of decorum are thrown into the fire. What else explains the recent debacle at the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics?
Yes, free speech is still the law of the land, but it is becoming increasingly one-sided. It is increasingly dangerous to state openly the social values of the Judeo-Christian position. Some are testing the public waters with the idea that the beliefs of a biblically informed conscience are hate speech. Their actions promote the doctrine that everything must be tolerated except that which threatens the validity of their latest desire.
But here’s the great thing about truth. It will never be eclipsed, either by the opposition of its enemies or the poor behavior of its friends. My prayer is that the conscience of our nation will understand the value of informed discourse rather than insolent invective, of listening and understanding rather than prejudicial rants. We are losing our tie to the anchor of truth, and unless we strengthen our hold, we will drift further off on the waves of disunity and discord.
