Premier America staff prepare to serve the financial needs of members at the Valencia branch. By Jim Walker

eing an owner of your financial institution might be a strange concept, but that’s exactly the status bestowed when banking
with Premier America Credit Union. In fact, the credit union’s motto is, “Bank Where You Own the Place.” And whether offering higher savings rates, lower loan rates or lower fees, the credit union has always made a meaningful difference in the lives of its members. For nearly 60 years, the full-service financial institution has built lasting relationships with member-owners in Southern California by offering value-driven banking products, personalized service and making community contributions. “It’s not unusual for us to greet most of our members by their first name,” said Aaron Garcia, Premier America Branch Manager in Valencia. “Our mission is to understand the financial needs of local residents so that we deliver a truly personalized banking experience.” A perfect example of this personalized banking experience occurred on the day this story was being written, Garcia said. That very rainy day a Premier America member came into the Valencia branch to deposit a check from another financial institution. However, she realized she had forgotten to bring the check in. At this point she reluctantly decided that, even though it was raining hard, she
would drive home, get the check and drive back. To the rescue came a Certified Member Advocate (CMA), who highlighted the convenience of Premier America’s mobile banking app. The CMA informed the member that, by using the app, she only had to take a picture of the check and it would be deposited electronically. In this way she was spared the return trip on wet roads. Credit unions, such as Premier America, have a rich history evolving from the idea that people working together can create better financial solutions, especially when, as owners, members have a vested interest in their collective success. And this concept goes well beyond mere financial benefits. “Premier America Credit Union is deeply committed to making a difference in each of the communities we serve,” said Christina Madaras, Director of Community Development and Corporate Citizenship. “By establishing relationships with nonprofit organizations, supporting local initiatives and providing volunteer support, the credit union is able to champion a number of important local causes.” For example, she noted that Premier America is regularly a sponsor for several recurring charity

events in the Valencia area, including the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night. She added that Premier America employees also actively participate in these events. In 2017 Premier America will celebrate 60 years in business as a financial institution, and now features more than $2 billion in assets, nearly 100,000 members and 18 Southern California branches, including the Valencia branch, which has been serving local residents since 2004. “Unlike a bank,” Garcia said, “we are guided by our member-owners and not shareholders, so our profits are reinvested into the organization. In this way we can offer higher savings rates, lower loan rates and lower fees than banks do.” Premier America members not only benefit from personal attention, but also a full complement of deposit, lending, investment and insurance services. Visit the credit union at 27550 Newhall Ranch Road, #203 in Valencia. Branch Manager Aaron Garcia can be reached at 800-7724000 or by email at aaron.garcia@premieramerica.com.

Accurate Freight Focuses on Customers and Teamwork By Martha Garcia
S
hip a product overnight to reach its destination on Christmas Eve? Tony Demma, owner of Accurate Freight Systems, doesn’t bat an eye. Offering customers transportation and logistics solutions 24/7 is what Demma and Accurate Freight do best. Demma built the business from the ground up in 2006, using his more than 30 years of experience in the freight industry. Combined with the nearly 30 years experience of his Operations Manager, Alan Jue, the two have created a freight business like no other in the Santa Clarita Valley. “Alan has been here since the very first minute,” said Demma. “He is instrumental in our success and one of the hardest working people I know.” Demma began his career in freight in 1985 in Chicago, working for large companies, like Fed Ex Custom Critical. Prompted by his wife’s health, the family moved to Valencia where he began working with another local shipper. After that company went out of business, Demma was encouraged to use his extensive industry experience and “can do” attitude to start his own business. The company has continued to grow, now offering more than 45,000 square feet of warehousing. Demma attributes Accurate Freight’s success to three things: great customers, amazing staff, and the support of key business partners. Demma explained his customers are loyal because they know Accurate Freight works hard, has competitive rates and a wide range of service. Those services include, courier work, freight, warehousing, fulfillment, and more.
Keys to Success Jue runs the operations, while Demma focuses on sales. Demma has sold freight every day since 1985 and still enjoys being involved in that process, but knows the key to a good business is the employees. “A large part of my success is the ability to sur-

Evans brings his 25 years of transportation experience and was excited to come on board because he knew Accurate Freight is a leader in the industry. “Anybody can sell freight and do it in a different way, but how they take care of their customers is what sets them apart from the rest,” said Evans. “I am very much customer oriented too. When you take care of the customer and are loyal to them, they will be loyal to you.” The Bank of Santa Clarita was another key business partner Demma attributed Accurate Freight’s

Tile Boutique Design Center Has Unique Approach By Ruben J. Porras
“F
eatures tile floors and countertops” is a statement that you will see often in real estate advertisements and hear from Realtors and property managers. One local company focuses on making tile installations beautiful and unique to enrich properties and boost resale value. Serving the Santa Clarita Valley and the San Fernando Valley, Tile Boutique is a one-stop shop for everything tile-related. Once part of a popular chain of tile stores with a 30-year history, Tile Boutique changed hands in 1996 when two brothers purchased the store from their employer. The story of the Vasquez Brothers and Tile Boutique is an example of the American Dream at work. Upon finishing their studies at a local college, both Vasquez brothers went to work at the flagship location of a chain of tile stores. They worked long hours and learned every aspect of the business. Eventually, the brothers became general manager and assistant manager of the store. One day the owner of the store announced that he wanted to sell the business. The brothers planned, consulted their families, pooled their resources and bought the store. The rest is history. According to its website, Tile Boutique has a long history because it has a unique business model. The store covers all aspects of tile sales and installation. As a distributor, the store sells to other tile dealers, as a wholesaler, the store sells to contractors, architects, and designers, and as a direct seller, the store sells to individual homeowners such as semi-do-it-yourselfers and pure do-ityourselfers. To maintain their business model, the store focuses on superior product knowledge, product origin, honesty and complete satisfaction. The Vasquez brothers and all their employees don’t rest until every customer knows everything there is to know about the tile that they are interested in. One factor that Tile Boutique takes a great deal of care with is sourcing their product and explaining to their customers how quality varies from different places in the world. The company’s website explains that the world economy has flooded the market with all levels of product quality. Tile Boutique takes great pride in wading through the options and educating customers. Regardless of whether you’ve been dreaming of a shower tiled around a Marilyn Monroe theme or a kitchen that will inspire you to become a master chef, Tile Boutique can do it. Porcelain, granite, ceramic, wood, natural stone, wall mosaic, quarry, floor, marble, travertine, limestone, glass, metal, manufactured stone, terra cotta, stone slabs, and custom-designed tiles are all available. Tile Boutique is also the exclusive distributor for NUHEAT premium under-tile radiant floor heating
systems, American Olean tile products, and Bright Glaze tile care and maintenance products. Tile Boutique also carries tile products from Astor Tileworks and Walker Zanger. Every stage of your tile product is considered by the company. Tile Boutique even stocks architectural sinks and faucets and all the “rough” product that you need to install tile. “Rough” products include ancillary products such as cement, grout, limestone “mud”, concrete surface liners, tools, measuring devices, including laser units, tile and stone cutting machines and drills, diamond-edged blades, polishing machines, sealers and penetrating fluids, under-tile floor heaters, and more. Chem Dry of Santa Clarita Takes Healthy Approach By Rubén Porras

rooks and Kim Blaquera dedicate their lives to making your life healthier. For the past 29 years, the couple has owned and operated Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley with a focus on fair pricing, the highest quality possible, and great customer service — the kind of customer service that is hard to find any more in any industry. “What I love about what my company does is that not only do we make homes clean, we make them healthy. A clean home is great, but it’s not really clean or healthy until the carpet, furniture, tile and grout are clean and sanitized. You can have the cleanest home in the country, but if your floors aren’t clean, it won’t look, feel or smell clean,” explained Kim Blaquera. As technology and the global need to take care of the environment have advanced, the Blaqueras have committed themselves to learning about the latest techniques and environmentally friendly green cleaning products. To put their training to good use, they have invested in the most powerful truck-mounted, industrial-strength cleaning equipment available in the industry today. “We use the latest, most up-to-date equipment and methods to safely and professionally clean your carpets, upholstery, tile and grout. We are also experts at pet urine treatments and stain removal,” said Blaquera. According to Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley’s website, the company uses a Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process tested by a leading independent air quality laboratory in multiple homes. The lab found that Chem-Dry removes an average of 98.1 percent of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery. The common allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergens. The process, when coupled with a sanitizer, was found to remove an average of 89 percent of the airborne bacteria in the home and 82.3 percent of the bacteria in carpets. The passion that Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley has for their business has advanced Brooks Blaquera to 5-Star Master Technician status — the highest level attainable in the industry. Customers have taken notice of the company’s professionalism and attention to detail.

On time, so friendly. He explained everything to our satisfaction, gave us options so we could choose what was best for our situation. I have multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and asthma, and the cleaning products used were safe/green! Didn’t bother me at all! Brooks pre-treated our many problem areas (we have several rescue dogs!), thoroughly cleaned our very old carpet, and he finished off with a sanitizer which I requested to kill germs. Carpet completely dried in 2-3 hours. Brooks is conscientious and an extremely hard worker, making sure nothing is missed. We will definitely call on him again,” wrote Robert R. MS Fulfillment is a family-owned, full-service order fulfillment company. It provides both business-to-consumer and business-to-business fulfillment for an array of branded consumer products. AMS operates six fulfillment centers in Santa Clarita, encompassing nearly 700,000 square feet of space, and the company employs more than 360 people, many of who are local residents. “However, we do a number of things that not only create jobs but also help generate careers,” said AMS CEO Ken Wiseman. Noting that 40 to 50 percent of AMS jobs are entry level, he explained, “We recognize the fact that our industry offers a unique opportunity for entry level workers or people returning to the work force. So we decided to focus our energies on what these individuals need in a working environment.” Wiseman said AMS has a long-standing tradition of supporting and working with the SCV community. “We establish partnerships with local social service organizations and College of the Canyons for hiring of candidates and continued education.” He explained that these organizations provide candidates for employment through their on the job training programs and that their agreements with AMS allow AMS to utilize and train the employees to company standards and then hire them full time – or the employees can take the skills they’ve learned to a new company. “Ken and I have achieved a great balance as partners,” AMS President Jay Catlin said. “Ken’s passion is working with employees and the community, while I focus much of my time on new business development and client relations. Ken and I are also both heavily engaged in all matters relating to financial performance, and both of us believe that employ-
ee development is not only personally rewarding, but also a critical component of our bottom line success.” In January, 50 top educators from around the state were invited to attend a contract education conference at COC in order to discuss how community colleges can provide customized training for local companies. During the event Ken Wiseman was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from COC for his support of the AMS/ COC Apprenticeship Program – and as part of the event there was a tour of the AMS educational facility, led by Wiseman and Catlin. “What people need to know is that someone believes in them. We do, and hopefully this program will help our apprentices believe in themselves,” Wiseman told those present. During the tour Adrineh Terantonians, Director of Workforce & Career Development Operations at Goodwill Southern California, said, “It was my honor and privilege to visit such an extraordinary organization and we are looking forward to working with them, moving forward, and celebrating their achievements.” More recently, Wiseman said that AMS has been working with College of the Canyons job candidates for two years in the original AMS classroom, but was very excited that the company has added a new 25-person computer lab. And he said the lab would also be available to other SCV businesses and not-for-profit organizations to lease for their own purposes. Jay Catlin was also very excited about the new facility. “It’s great to see our Advance My Skills computer lab fully launched. Educating our employees is something we believe in, for the long term benefit of our valued employees and also for AMS as a business,” he said. Newhall Pharmacy, Family Owned Old-time Pharmacy By Alicia Doyle
O
n March 1, 2016 Newhall Pharmacy opened a new location at 24239 Main St. from its previous site at 23768 Newhall Avenue. “We will be operating in downtown historical Newhall, and adding services like compounding,” said pharmacist Moazzem H. Chowdhury, a resident of Santa Clarita since 1994 who has been living in the United States for more than three decades. Chowdhury, who graduated from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, has 40 years practicing as a pharmacist and vast experience as the owner and manager of Desert Drug Pharmacy in Canyon Country and Desert Drugs in Lancaster. He also is a staff pharmacist at other pharmacies including Crown Valley Pharmacy in Acton. In 1999, he was one of the first pharmacists to give flu shots in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. At Newhall Pharmacy, Chowdhury is working with his dedicated team of pharmacists and pharmacy staff to grow the family pharmacy to the next level of success. “It is a difficult time for a small business to survive; we struggled so many years and we are still operating,” Chowdhury said. “Our goal is to continue to provide the much needed healthcare services in this community. The new location surely will attract lots of new customers.” Newhall Pharmacy opened in the community in August of 2012 with the goal to provide personalized health services – especially for customers who were tired of non-individualized service found in chain pharmacies and mail order pharmacies. Chowdhury speaks from his managerial experience in numerous chain pharmacies such as Walmart, Rite Aid, K-Mart and Longs Drugs. From that, he realized that the best services are provided by small home town pharmacies like Newhall Pharmacy. “We are a family-owned, old-time retail pharmacy,” he explained. “We are committed to providing individualized service with care and compassion by a very knowledgeable pharmacist.” Newhall Pharmacy accepts most health insurance plans, and will match or beat other pharmacy

Newhall Pharmacy owner Moazzem Chowdhury with, wife, Jeenat. prices, Chowdhury noted. “We offer the lowest price on over-the-counter medication and vitamins,” he said. “And we offer free delivery with some restrictions.” Some of Newhall Pharmacy’s most popular services include flu shots, free delivery services, health information and consultations. We are particularly sensitive to the wellness needs of our seniors. Newhall Pharmacy also offers services that cannot be found elsewhere, including home service for the elderly who need a flu shot by a pharmacist,
hospice pharmacy services, and a quarterly free blood pressure and other health related clinics. One of the biggest accomplishments at Newhall Pharmacy is establishing one-on-one relationships with each customer, Chowdhury said. “We know our customers by name,” he said. “Our customers are a big family.” Newhall Pharmacy is located at 24239 Main Street, across from the Canyon Theatre Guild at 6th Street in Newhall. There’s also the standard DUI, as well as theft, vandalism or domestic altercations. “It’s incredibly stressful to find out a friend or loved one has been arrested in the city of Santa Clarita on criminal related charges,” Sandoval-March said. “Knowing what to do next isn’t always obvious.” The goal of SCV Bail Bonds is to provide customers with professional 24-hour service while focusing on treating each individual with dignity, respect and privacy. The company provides clients and the community at large no-cost bail bond consultations and the fastest release available. Having successfully served thousands of clients in the Santa Clarita community and surrounding areas since 2010, SCV Bail Bonds is building on that success by opening a second location on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country. “We’re super excited to announce that we’ll soon be expanding to better service the entire Santa Clarita Valley and getting positioned to be closer to the new Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Jail, which will open around 2020,” said March. Their second office will join current operations, located across the street from the current Santa Clarita Jail, on Valencia Boulevard in Valencia. Their agency is open 24 hours a day. “We are the closest physical agency to the Santa

Their dedicated staff takes the time to patiently explain the bail process, and personally work with the family members, friends, clergy, attorneys, co-workers, of the defendant every step. “We set the highest ethical standards in bail and stand by our commitment of confidentiality. We understand the stress, worry and fear of the unknown,” Sandoval-March noted. “We want to help take the mystery out of bail. We always focus on helping our community members get through the tough-

Above all, SCV Bail Bonds is committed to providing the top level of care. “We go the extra mile by providing our clients with local information for family support or domestic violence counseling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities,” Sandoval-March said. “We always offer our clients support before, during and after every bond we write.” Not everyone in town will need SCV Bail Bonds. But if they ever do, it’s comforting to know the caring family of SCV Bail Bonds is right here to help. For more information visit scvbailbonds.com or call 661-299-BAIL (2245).
