Aloha Ventura!

The Aloha Beach Festival Charity Event

Appetizers start at $325

“A

loha” — a heartfelt wish for peace and loving connection with others — is the motivational spirit that inspired Chipper “Bro” Bell and his wife Kelly to create “The Aloha Beach Festival.” Ventura County’s blissful surf side charity event will be on Sept. 3 and 4, from 10 a.m. until sunset. Held each year at Promenade Park, the festival features traditional Hawaiian musicians and dancers, arts and crafts, delicious food and drink, musical entertainment, and Freestyle Frisbee Exhibitions. The event site is directly in front of Surfer’s Point, where the California Street Long Board Classic Surf Contest is happening concurrently. The excitement of the long, short, and paddle board contests, as well as sightings of outriggers cresting the waves, form the perfect tropical backdrop for shore side fun. Now in it’s 12th year, the Aloha Beach Festival benefits local social and environmental charitable organizations. Chipper “Bro” and Kelly want everyone in the community and beyond to be able to come out, mingle with their neighbors and new friends, and really experience the Aloha spirit flowing from Hawaii, to Ventura and beyond. To welcome everyone, all charitable funds are generated by the sales revenues of participating vendors and event-appropriate sponsors. In this way, admission is kept absolutely free. Previous beneficiaries of the Aloha Beach Festival include the Young and the Brave Foundation, the Ojai Raptor Center, the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, and the American Red Cross. This year’s chosen recipient is the Matilija Coalition, an alliance of individuals, businesses, and community groups committed to the removal of the

ewhall is hosting its newest event, Revved Up, every second Thursday from until October on Main Street between 8th Street and Market Street. Revved Up is a free monthly car show event open to everyone. However, there is a twist to this show. Instead of a classic traditional car show, each night will feature a specific car genre niche. Come and admire amazing modifications, beautiful restorations and remarkable craftsmanship while enjoying food trucks, adult beverages and a live band. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite as part of the People’s Choice and Peer Choice awards. Events start at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 8, low riders show it off at the Revved Up car show. A low rider is exactly what it sounds like! It is an automobile that has been modified so that its ground clearance is much lower than its original design. This can be done by al-

Movie Review

‘The Light Between Oceans’ is a ludicrous period-piece weeper By Richard Roeper

“W

e’re not doing anything wrong.” — Alicia Vikander’s Isabel to Michael Fassbender’s Tom, just as they’re about to do something really, really wrong. In the history of movies, anytime anyone says, “We’re not doing anything wrong,” everyone in the audience is pretty much always thinking, “Oh yes you are!” This is one of the core problems with “The Light Between Oceans,” a gorgeous but plodding and borderline ludicrous period-piece weeper. We’re supposed to feel for Isabel and Tom and the plight they find themselves in, but THEY PUT THEMSELVES IN THAT SITUATION, and what they’ve done isn’t just criminal; it’s cruel. Based on the popular novel from 2012 by M.L. Stedman, and adapted and directed by the gifted Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine,” “The Place Beyond the Pines”), “The Light Between Oceans” is one of those movies announcing from the get-go you’re in for some serious melodrama. We open in Australia in 1918, as World War I (then known as the Great War) was coming to a close. Michael Fassbender plays Tom Sherbourne, a four-year combat veteran who appears numb and broken. Tom applies for the job of lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote post some 100 miles from the nearest town.

Alicia Vikander in a scene from, “The Light Between Oceans.” That’ll suit him just fine. Ah, but living in that town is one Isabel (Vikander), a beautiful, sweet and plucky gal who lost two brothers to the war and is biding her time in her parents’ home, just waiting for a Fassbender-looking guy to sweep her off her feet. After just one semi-date, Tom and Isabel are goners. He goes back to the lighthouse, and they commence with a pen-pal romance. Before you can say, “Cue the happiness montage,” Tom and Isabel are married, and Isabel is with child. Isabel suffers a miscarriage, and then another. The tragedies are compounded because she’s isolated on the unforgiving Janus Rock with just her husband.

And then a dinghy washes up, and inside the dinghy there is a dead man and a baby girl who is very much alive. Tom says they must report this to the authorities. Isabel, who has just suffered her second miscarriage, says: What if we bury the dead man, and we pretend this girl is ours? I suppose it’s possible everyone, including Isabel’s parents, will buy into the notion this quite large baby was actually born to Isabel in the lighthouse with only Tom to provide assistance. I’m just not sure anyone could have turned this soap opera material into anything other than a sweeping, credibility-stretching, overwrought ... soap opera.

tandup comedy is really one of the only art forms that is subjected to heckling. You are never going to see someone at an art exhibit walk up to the painter and sarcastically say, “What do you do for a living.” Or at the opera hear people yelling out “That aria sucks!” Standup comedy is also one of the only art forms that patrons frequently are intoxicated, and that might explain some of it. You may say that people might yell out at a band, but a band can easily drown out a heckler. Usually when an audience member tries to take on a comedian, they discover the one with the microphone always wins. Once I was talking about massage therapists on stage during a show and an attractive woman in the audience who thought

I was picking on massage therapists yelled out to me. I asked her if she was a massage therapist and she said she was and that she believed that if everyone in the world every day would have a good massage and good sex, there would be no crime in the world. I retorted “That’s good because later on you can prevent a crime from happening! Because I am just a coiled spring, and I either get a little something from you, or I’m up on the roof with a high powered rifle!” She was unfazed and shot back “Do you need help getting up on the roof?” I still use that story in my act. That was a fun heckler. Most of them are not. I got

another great joke once from a heckler. It was in Houston, Texas, and I did a joke where I say “I wonder what atheists say when someone sneezes.” A lady in the audience yelled out “Nothing!” I said “Oh, are you an atheist?” She said “Yes!” with a southern drawl. I said “And proud of it!” She said “Yes I am!” I said, “Well then I guess you wouldn’t be offended if I told you to go to Hell?” Now I said it with a smile, and the audience roared. Even the atheist lady had to laugh. Later she gave me a massage.

P

in-Ups on Tour is coming to the American Legion Post 507 in Newhall on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. If you ever wanted to catch a burlesque show, this will be your opportunity. Pin-Ups on tour is a good time for a great cause. From the moment guests enter the event, they are treated to something special. The magic of the Hollywood Canteen that operated during the 1940s as a club offering dancing, drinks and entertainment for servicemen, usually on their way overseas is recreated. The evening will feature dancing Pin-Ups, comedy, variety acts, soulful lounge singers, raffle-ticket selling beauties and more than a few surprises! With entertainment & atmosphere around every turn, guests will feel like they stepped into another era. Pin-Ups on Tour is a vintage burlesque and variety show that supports hospitalized Veterans. The goal of the organization is to recreate the bawdy fun of 1940s burlesque theaters so popular across America during and post-WWII. Veterans & active duty service members always attend for free as a

way of saying “thank you for your service.” And the best part? As part of the mission to make veterans smile, the performers bring (a more tamed down version of our show!) and gifts to hospitalized veterans across America who aren’t able to make it out to an event. The American Legion Post 507 is located at 24527 Spruce St. in Newhall. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Veterans attend free. RSVP is strongly recommended. Gold Star Supporter - Reserved seating is $35. General Admission: $20 - online, $25 at the door. For more information visit www.pinupsontour.com
