Business | Chairman’s message
Looking Back at a Year of Change, Looking Forward to a Year of Stability By Chris Bell, Chairman of the Board
I
t’s amazing how fast time flies! In January of last year a letter was sent out to all Club members regarding the Board’s unanimous decision to implement a Capital Assessment program to begin March 1, 2017. The program was implemented to address the many, complex structural and functional issues that can occur with aging clubs, and to create a long-term plan for the maintenance and refurbishing of both member-facing and infrastructural projects. I am happy to report that the Capital Assessment Fund continues to grow, providing the Club with the ability to tackle the Capital projects that members want most, as well as the structural improvements the buildings most need. The Club’s Capital Assessment Fund is currently at over $500,000. The Capital Project Committee will continue meeting in order to prioritize Capital projects and create the largest impact for members. If you are interested in being part of the process, please reach out to the Club GM, John O’Connor at joconnor@spokaneclub.org. 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2018
Another major move made in 2017 to strengthen the Club’s future was the Board’s unanimous decision to hire KemperSports as a consulting group. This decision was formally announced at the Annual Meeting on July 11, 2017. Members who attended the meeting were able to personally meet key representatives from KemperSports, including Jim Stegall, Executive Vice President, KemperSports. The consulting agreement was a positive, productive process for the Club that evolved into a management agreement. In October of 2017, John O’Connor was officially named the General Manager of the Spokane Club. John has done a great job of genuinely connecting with members, leading and developing staff, and setting new standards of excellence for our Club while keeping a close eye on expenses and making smart decisions that both conserve and grow our assets, opportunities and member experiences. Your Board is also hard at work to elevate your experience at the Club. Staff is busy working on the 2018/2019 Budget and continues its focus on customer
service. As noted, our management partners at Kemper Sports continue to provide the Club with steady leadership and industry best practices that are being implemented around the Club. It continues to be a great partnership, with a great focus on the member experience. And speaking of member experiences, take a look at the offerings in this issue of Signals and plan to explore all your Club has to offer. Whether you are ready to try your first triathlon, polish your tennis game before USTA Tennis Tournaments, or add a new Club wine experience to your life before your annual Spring Barrel Tasting trip, the Club has programming for you. Our family is going to take advantage of the Club’s highly regarded swim lessons for our 2 year old son as we look forward to summer and taking advantage of the beautiful lakes and rivers the Inland Northwest has to offer. I can personally attest to the great benefit of membership for young families that access to some of the best childcare and kids programming in town provides. Whether you are a family with little ones taking advantage of the clean, safe, and attentive Childcare so mom and dad can take in a TRX class, or getting away for a quiet dinner alone or with your older kids, or one of the kids attending another great Spring Break camp with all of your friends, Club Childcare makes a difference in the quality of your life. The Club Restaurant and Executive Chef Dennis Sparber continue to receive great reviews. I am excited to see what Dennis has in store for us all this spring! Whatever your passions in life, you can find support, community and fun at your Club. I will see you at the Club.

Charlie and Cathy Simon
Club Members for 15 years If there were a recipe for Charlie and Cathy Simon’s life, it would include all the sweet, savory and astonishing flavors of the world, along with plenty of sea salt! Lifelong sailors, Charlie and Cathy Simon have answered the question: What do you do after a world circumnavigation? 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2018
The answer is to take on another adventure. The Simons departed Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on March 18, 2017, and completed the Northwest Passage on September 8, 2017 (Cathy’s birthday) on their Taswell 58, Celebrate, which previously took them around the world in 2014-2015.
Their Northwest Passage route was 3,300 miles crossing the Arctic Circle northbound in the Atlantic near Greenland, and re-crossing the Arctic Circle southbound in the Pacific near Alaska. The Simons were recorded as boat #263 in history to complete the passage.
“It has been the highlight of our continuing year-long, 14,000-mile sail around the North American continent via the Arctic and the Panama Canal, expecting to arrive back in Ft. Lauderdale by mid-February,” says, Charlie. “Morale-boosting from Club friends was so important to us for this challenging expedition”, says, Cathy. Longtime members and supporters of the Spokane Club, Stacy and Anne Cowles, were introduced to the Simons by fellow Club member friends and Past Club President, Tom Culberson and his wife, BruceAnn, who all continued to offer words of support and tracked the Simon’s progress. Also, Dr. David Egger and his wife, Rebecca, were encouraging. Cathy met Rebecca when both women volunteered for the Club Christmas Decorating committee. Other close Club friends, including Phil and Jane Johnson, who have had many breakfast and lunch dates with the Simons at the Club, and John and Kat Langenheim, who first met the Simons at a Cellar Dwellers event, kept in contact with the Simons on the passage as much as possible. “Also, all of our Club friends sent us “congratulations” when the Arctic Passage was complete, says, Charlie. It meant a great deal to us! “We feel so fortunate to have connected at the Spokane Club and enjoyed a Georgian Room dinner-dance 25th wedding anniversary celebration”, says Cathy. “That party, along with many other celebrations we have since hosted at the Club, included these wonderful friends who are part of our “life support”. While the spirit of adventure is deeply engrained in both Charlie and Cathy, their sense of giving back to the community is fundamental to their lives and how they live it.
The Northwest Passage
“We believe education and learning is the key to a better world,” says Charlie. “We are major donors to the arts and sciences in the Spokane Community and worldwide. We were honored to be named Benefactors of the Year by the City of Spokane. We also give our time and energies to the arts and sciences across the USA.” Retired 12 years now from their respective careers, the couple sees their current life as a perfect match of family and friends, values and world experiences. For them, they key ingredients for a happy, meaningful life is simple: “Be good to everyone and follow your dreams!” www.spokaneclub.org | Spring 2018 | 5
Lindsay Burdett
Club Member for 7 Years Lindsay Burdett is a woman on the move—running races, managing the operations of an independent Financial Advisor practice, serving as Secretary on the Club’s Board and Finance & Exec Committees, and traveling the world. It’s that last piece—the travel—that makes her heart beat faster, and the country most deeply held in her heart is Africa. 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2018
“I LOVE Africa,” says Lindsay, with her signature, beautiful smile. “I absolutely, from the bottom of my heart, LOVE Africa. I fell in love the first time I went there a couple years ago, and I’m going back in June for my 4th tour.” Lindsay’s work in Africa is part of the mission of Spring of Hope International, (SOHI), a 501.C3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving living conditions and promoting Christian spiritual growth among the poorest of the poor in rural Kenya. (http://spring hope.org/about/) Lindsay’s enthusiasm for and commitment to the organization’s mission is profound. “Our mission is to empower the Kenyan people, not give them things or do the work for them. They are more than capable of doing the work on
their own and it gives them a sense of ownership and empowers them. The African people are beautiful inside and out. They love so much, while having so little and give you a true understanding of what it is to be in relationship and the importance of having family. We take American teams over to Kenya to show them what Kenya’s culture is like and how we can truly
help from afar. You can’t help until you understand what help looks like for them and their culture. We do, however ,drill wells for clean water, and have a team to help us figure out best places for these wells to maximize utilization of the well and to shorten the walks for the people. Water is life to them.” Beyond her work in Kenya, Lindsay is also very involved in her own Spokane community. “I think it’s important to make sure you’re rolling up your sleeves in your own home town. I often hear of opportunities through my church. A couple of recent events were helping out Generation Alive by packing dry foods for distribution to local families, and the families hit by the California fires. We also collected for 2nd Harvest Food Bank and Toys for Tots at our work location, and I volunteer at my church at various services and events.” Anyone who has met Lindsay remembers her open, genuine smile, which in itself is a kind of passport to the hearts of others and the surest route for sharing her life passions. Those passions are what help to create a meaningful life. What does living a meaningful life mean to Lindsay? It’s both simple and profound. “Stuff doesn’t, and won’t, make you happy, so you may as well invest in people! Every little bit counts. Be patient with yourself, be patient with other people and roll with it. Thank God for this life, relax, enjoy, don’t take yourself so seriously and don’t be in such a hurry to get on to the next thing. There’s no need to elbow your way to the top, it will be there when you get there and you may even make some friends along the journey.”

Dean Davis
Club Member for 13 Years From the time he was a boy, Dean Davis saw the world through a wide lens. Born in Würzburg, Germany and raised in Mississippi, The Philippines, Oklahoma and Spokane, Dean developed an adventurous mind and a keen eye for people and places and the stories they held within. His personal and professional storytelling took the form of photography and he’s made a great living—and a great life—from that choice. “I started a commercial photography business on Jan 1, 1997, and have been creating marketing and advertising images for a vast array of clients in the region since then. I started a fine art reproduction business about 15 years ago. We take artist’s work and create reproductions for them. I also produce my own personal, fine art work.” Dean’s most recent show of fine art was a 7-month exhibit at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture titled “The Artist’s Palette – Through the Lens of Dean Davis.” A Spokane Club member since 2005, Dean joined the Club to stay in shape 8 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2018
and build relationships with other business owners in the community. He remains a member for the same reasons. Dean is actively involved with the greater Spokane community as well. In earlier days, he was part owner of Spokane’s first microbrewery, The Fort Spokane Brewery. He co-founded the Inland Empire Blues Society in 1991 and spent over 13 years as co-host of The KKZX Blues Show with Ted and Dean. Dean started his photography business in January 1997 and has been involved with the community in diverse ways
since then. He is a past president of the American Advertising Federation, a former board member of Spokane Regional MARCOM and is currently the Chair of the Spokane Arts Commission and a board member of the Spokane Arts Fund. “My work life and personal life are inextricably connected. And I love that. I aspire to create and whether I am making an image of a gas meter for a utility or an image for a museum exhibit, it excites me. I shamelessly share my work with anyone who is interested.” He is, definitively, a happy man. “I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I spend my days doing something that I am passionate about. I’m excited and eager to get to my studio every day. My wife and I work in the same industry and are able to understand each other in the evening when we talk about our day.” Given his passion for living, what does he see as the key ingredients to a happy, meaningful life? “We spend the bulk of the waking hours of our adult life at work. Find a way to love what you do or find something else to do. I’m a firm believer that we are each responsible for our own happiness and that we are in charge of our own destiny.”

Presenting Executive Chef, Dennis Sparber!
John O’Connor, General Manager and Dennis Sparber, Executive Chef
By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director
A
lot of shining moments in life are built on the steady, determined and inspired work of decades. Dennis Sparber, the Club’s new Executive Chef, is having a series of shining moments these days, presenting members with outstanding dining experiences from casually elegant to classically cool, and all with the timing, flair and finesse of a private club Executive Chef. A key member of the kitchen staff for 18 years, Dennis, most recently the Club’s Executive Sous Chef, has been a magician behind the scenes for most of those years, steadily perfecting his craft. During that time he worked side by side 10 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2018
with two of the Club’s most beloved chefs, Ray Delfino and Urs Moser. Dennis also worked with Will Barron, the legendary Maître d’ of the Club Restaurant. Chef Delfino and Will Barron are likely looking down from heaven with big smiles on their faces as they see the success of one of their young chefs. Chef Moser, now the Executive Chef of the North Jersey County Club, is also delighted to see Chef Dennis rise to the Executive Chef level. “Dennis is very dedicated to his profession and genuinely loves the Spokane Club and its members,” says Chef Urs. “He is absolutely a perfectionist and it
shows in the flavor, quality and presentation of his food, and in the cleanliness and organization of his kitchen.” Working side by side with Dennis for over 4 years, Urs was struck by the amount of time Dennis spent with the young cooks and his encouragement of their talent. “Dennis really enjoys working with young chefs and teaching them the art, and sometimes, the science, of cooking. He encourages their curiosity and is always looks for teaching moments.” Chef Dennis, a native of Washington state and longtime Spokane resident, was taught by some great instructors at Spokane Community College and upon graduation, worked at all the thenhottest spots in town including Ankeny’s at the Ridpath, Salty’s at the Falls, and Casey’s Bar and Grille. When an opening came up at the Spokane Club, Dennis applied for the job and won it. And for all the years that led up to his becoming the Club’s Executive Chef, Dennis has kept the same attitude towards his career: “If you have a passion for cooking, you never find it to be work. How many people get to have this much fun and be paid for it?”
Will Barron, the legendary Maître d’ of the Club Restaurant
Eric Scheer, Jovanna Fenton, Jason Rush and Dennis
In addition to being the right person, at the right time, Dennis had the right set of eyes on him when the Executive Chef position was posted. That new vision came from John O’Connor, the Club’s General Manager. “When I arrived at the Spokane Club my first task was to continue the search for yet another new Executive Chef ” John recalls. “Whoever was chosen would
Urs Moser, a favorite mentor of Dennis
be the fifth one in the past seven years. This constant turnover led to a decline in overall quality but also in member trust and satisfaction.” In the meantime, we had a large and multi-faceted Food and Beverage department that needed to continue to operate seamlessly. During the nation-wide search process, my observations, while attending to the day-to-day operations of all the elements of the food at the Club, led me to a fascinating conclusion: the solution was sitting right under my nose. “ “Executive Sous Chef Dennis Sparber, an 18-year veteran of the Spokane Club kitchens, was the one constant holding everything together during each and every change. His culinary skills were never in doubt and in interviewing Dennis and listening and watching how he worked, I came to realize that he was absolutely the best fit for what was needed.” “Since his promotion to Executive Chef, the comments on the food quality,
consistency, presentation and overall member satisfaction feedback have been through-the-roof positive. I am very excited to have Chef Dennis Sparber lead our culinary program to create fabulous member and guest experiences and restore the trust and confidence in a membership base starved for what their palettes crave.” One example of a shining culinary success was the recent Crab Feed which sold out, and with the highest attendance on record for the event. Dale and Corky Mason, longtime members and lifetime supporters of the Club attended the event and Corky reported back to John O’Connor on their experience. In her email to John, Corky wrote: “Now that was a Crab feed! The event was sold out, with delicious food and beautiful presentation. Dennis and his Staff did a superb job in making lots of people very happy. Everyone commented on it being the very best Crab Feed we have ever had! You, too, are to be congratulated, John. Many thanks for keeping our Club in the spotlight and for your leadership.” It’s an exciting time for Chef Dennis and all the recognition from members, fellow staff, and local fans from all over Spokane is deeply appreciated. But it’s the joy of doing what he does best that keeps him happy and creative. “I have high respect for the Spokane Club. It’s a fantastic place to work and I get to use a lot of my talent and passion here. Being happy to come to work and loving what you do every day is amazing. When you get paid for doing what you love and people call it work, that’s a pretty sweet deal!”

Member Mentor Program Help us welcome new members by being a member mentor! Whether you love aqua fitness or yoga, play tennis, are a social dancer or just enjoy meeting new people, you can help us connect our new members to all our Club has to offer. We want to welcome our new members and encourage all members to support the growth of our unique community. You can sign up to be a mentor for: Handball, racquetball, tennis, yoga, aqua fitness, swimming, basketball, squash, pickleball, running, cycling, family fun, social dance, wine & food, business networking and general welcome.
Corporate Membership Program Did you know that Spokane Club has 5 or more members from over 70 companies? That means all future members from those companies will receive half off initiation when they join our member community! When 5 or more employees are current members, all other employees receive 1/2 off initiation. The purpose of our Corporate program is to support networking opportunities for Spokane’s business community. And remember, if you refer a new member to the Club from your company, you get to choose your Member Referral Reward! All that is needed is for the applying member to write your name on the “Referral” line of their application. Contact the Membership department at 509-459-4242 for more information.
To become a Member Mentor, please email membership@spokaneclub.org and let us know what areas of the Spokane Club you are most passionate about. Our membership team will occasionally reach out to you and ask that you welcome a new member to our Club with a phone call or meeting for coffee.
#LoveTheClub Love your Club online! We are asking all our members to “like” Spokane Club on Facebook and Instagram, and to post photos in February with the message #LovetheClub. You can share photos or thoughts about why you love your Club, whether you appreciate swimming in the pool, want to highlight your favorite group fitness teacher, enjoy seeing your friend at the Club or have a fabulous meal in the restaurant. Let’s show our love for the Club!

A Message From Your Body to Your Mind Photo by Ales Krivec/Unsplash
Dear Body, Why are you failing me? Dear Mind, Thank you for checking in, I’ve been trying to talk with you for years. You’re always “too busy” though and don’t seem to notice my subtle cues, tightness in the shoulders, a dull ache, general tension. It seems like I have to throw a tantrum to get your attention, like when the back gave out a few years ago, or the knee wouldn’t let you play golf. The funny thing is, you only seem to pay attention to me briefly, then it’s back to your routine, leaving little time for me. You keep comparing me to who I was 20 years ago, and frankly, if you look in the mirror, you’ll notice we’ve changed. Maybe if you started appreciating what I can still do, instead of what I can’t, we would be doing a lot more together. I’ve noticed that you put better fuel in your car, then you do in me, and when
By Christine Cronin, PT
I finally break down, you don’t get to replace me. The fuel you’ve been using in me lately, has been slowing down the system, and has not left me with much power. That poor fuel has added weight to our frame, and I wasn’t made to carry this much extra force. In fact, I’m quite tired with this extra load and it’s causing me to wear down sooner. While I’m ranting about your car, you have a trusted mechanic, but when is the last time you took me to a trusted health care provider? Don’t even get me started about exercise. Do you know what I was designed for? I used to walk or jog for days in groups, spending hours on my feet, climbing, sprinting, and for fun we danced and feasted and sang. Now we sit, and then when we get tired from sitting at the office we go home and sit on the couch, with an occasional burst of movement. Not nearly enough to quench my thirst. Sometimes you still ask me to do what we did 20 years ago,
that’s when I remind you we can’t by blowing out our Achilles. So Brain, I’m quite offended by the thought that I’ve let you down, when in fact you been letting me down for years. Thankfully, I’m incredibly forgiving. Just give me a chance, because I can get stronger at any age, in fact I can grow our muscles bigger no matter if you are 80 or 18. It may take a little longer, but I can always get better if you ask. I can get more flexible if we stretch together, I can even make our heart and lungs stronger, bigger and you more efficient. We can get faster and improve our balance if we work on it. I am amazing at adapting to the stress you put on me, the only problem is lately you’ve been putting a lot of stress on yourself, and not listening to me at all. If I may, please do something for me today, something small, a walk or a stretch during a phone call at work. I am capable of more than you know, and if you start listening, we might enjoy this ride a little more. Ready? Me too! www.spokaneclub.org | Spring 2018 | 23
