Use Your Club for Life, Laugher and Lasting Friends By Trish McFarland, Board Chair
S
pokane is growing and changing! The small town many of us knew even just a dozen years ago is fast becoming one of the best places to live in the US--and local realtors will tell you that it’s a seller’s market. With growth and the influx of new people comes a broader range of restaurants, wineries, workout centers, hotels and gathering spots. Options grow to match a growing and increasingly diverse population. All of which is for the good. As many things are changing in Spokane, others can be counted on to reflect a sense of local pride and history, along with constant services that are both evergreen and evolving. One of these constants is the Spokane Club. Although we have seen many changes this year, one key element remains the same at the Club: exceptional service for exceptional people. Our Spokane Club staff is dedicated to delivering the best restaurant and catering options, the best programs and events, the best hotel 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2017
rooms for your out-of-town family and colleagues, and the best athletic programs for all levels of success. As members, if any of us haven’t experienced what’s happening at the Club lately, we need to take a closer, broader look. I challenge each of us to try something new among our many programs and events. Whether it’s Monday Night Trivia in the Restaurant, the Weekend Mimosa Bar, one of the upcoming Cocktails
and Conversation events, or simply trying one of the new Fitness classes, there are new and fun ways to interact with other members and make your life happier, healthier and a lot more fun. The success of the Club depends on our usage of it! The more we use all facets of the Club, the more it stays alive and relevant to us as members. If you only go to the athletic side of the Downtown facility, walk across the sky walk and visit the library or bar. If you only use the restaurant, go across that sky walk and ask for a tour of the pool or the workout room. If you have never been to the Valley facility, take the very short drive out there and watch a tennis match. Then invite a friend to see what you have discovered and invite them to join. Success breeds success! The busier the Club is, the busier it will become. As my term as your Board Chair ends, I want you all to know how proud I am to have served as your Board Chair this year. We have an outstanding team of Board member volunteers dedicated to the best outcomes for our members. They give so much of their time and talent behind the scenes. I want to give special thanks to the Past Chair, Nancy Vorhees, and Chair Elect, Chris Bell, for helping me through some health challenges this year. The two of you are terrific! I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon and often! Best Regards, Trish McFarland

NEW EVENT
COCKTAILS Conversation The Mountains We Face: Facing life’s hardships and pressing on! Presented by Jeremy White Join us for an evening of inspiration, networking and dinner at our new event, Cocktails and Conversation. Our speaker will be Jeremy White, and he will focus on facing life’s hardships and pressing on! Jeremy has lived the first 30 years of his life with adventure; from running with the bulls in Spain to scuba diving with sharks, and climbing some of the highest peaks in the country. Jeremy holds a Bachelor’s degree in international business and has been a part of some unique projects including developing a survival jacket for

backpackers and the homeless, as well as establishing a nonprofit in Los Angeles working with former gang members and law enforcement. However, at age 31, Jeremy’s lifestyle changed drastically. A week after returning from racing camels around the pyramids in Egypt, Jeremy was diagnosed with heart failure and given only days to live. Jeremy faced his most difficult challenge yet. Doctors were able to save Jeremy’s life by implanting a mechanical heart, with which he still lives on today. Jeremy is awaiting a heart transplant
after which he hopes to return to some of things he once did. Recently Jeremy has chaired the Heart Walk in Spokane (put on by American Heart Association) and he teaches a wilderness survival class to kids in Deer Park. Reservations required, call Kelli Campbell at 459-4239 or register online at Spokaneclub.org.

New Member Referral Program
Play an active role in helping your Club grow! Members are our best ambassadors to help spread the joy of joining the Spokane Club, and we want to reward you for your efforts. We invite you to share your Club with friends, family, and business associates. Effective February 1, 2017, refer a new member to the Club and choose from a list of offerings throughout the Club to enjoy! Whether it’s something you partake in regularly or an activity you’ve never tried, this is your chance to make the most of your membership at the Club – on us!
Choose your reward from the following: • One month dues credit • Two, 1-hour Personal Training sessions • Two private Tennis lessons • Four, half-hour Private Swim Lessons • Two tickets to a social member event of your choice • $100 Food & Beverage credit • One month of Childcare + One Errand Day • One-night Hotel Stay
How it works:
1. Refer a new member! You can give the Membership department contact information for a potential new member, or facilitate the conversation independently. Note: In order to be considered for the Referral Reward, there is a “Referral” line on the new member application where your name must be listed as someone who played a part in the applicant’s decision to join the Club. Being named as a Sponsor does not necessarily imply a referral. 2. Once the potential member completes the application process, Membership will contact you to choose your reward! 16 . Business | staff notes
Richard Rodgers is our Employee of the Quarter!
Ryan Lloyd, Richard Rodgers and Dave Schuler
With quiet strength and determined professionalism, Richard Rodgers has been making the Club a better place for members and fellow staff for nearly 13 years. As a Club Attendant, it’s Richard’s job to make the Athletic side of the Club sparkle. Literally. So on any given day Richard can be found stocking and restocking towels for the locker rooms, removing trash, cleaning every single surface and replacing supplies and amenities that members come to rely on. Staff have come to rely on Richard too, for inspiration and role modeling. “Rich is the hardest working, most reliable person I have ever met,” says
Jenn Manos, Assistant Manager of the Valley Club. “He is always positive, respectful and caring. The staff loves him and so do the members. Many of the members come to the desk to ask for ideas on gifts to get Richard for Christmas!” The Employee of the Quarter award recognizes outstanding Club employees who have provided exemplary service to members while modeling behavior that is inspiring to staff. The nominees are brought forward by the Club staff and voted on by Senior Management. We thank Richard for his exceptional service and outstanding attitude. You are truly valued and appreciated, Richard!

Squats + Lunges = a Stronger Foundation!
By Christine Cronin, PT
W
ith summer approaching it might be more challenging to make it to the gym. The great news is, this is the perfect time to develop your leg program as it requires little-to-no equipment. Squats and lunges are a personal favorite for me, because when performed correctly they are an incredibly functional exercise and develop great strength. The squat and lunge develop almost all of your leg muscles, but you will especially notice your glutes, hamstrings and quads. The gluteus maximus (glutes pronounced “gloots”) is the official name for what we refer to as our bottom, or “butt” sorry to offend. The glutes are powerful hip extensors, which mean they help us walk, run, jump, and transition force from our legs to our back and up the kinetic chain. This muscle atrophies like any other when it doesn’t get used, hence the look of no butt in some folks as they age. The problem with losing your glutes is it’s also associated with low back 26 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2017
pain, because it increases the strain and pressure on your back. The legs are like the foundation of your home. Without an adequate foundation, even the most beautiful, well-built home will crumble. Find a mirror and start with your feet shoulder width apart, make sure your knees stay aligned with your feet. Do not let your knees come over your toes. Tighten your abs like you’re squeezing into tight jeans, and then tip your pelvis forward, chest up, butt back. You should feel funny right now, like you’re sticking
your bottom out way too far, weight is on your heels. Now start to sit back, as if you were sitting in a chair, in fact grab a chair to practice with. Go slow, 5 seconds to get to the lowest point in the movement. Go down as far as you can while keeping the knees aligned with the feet, but not allowing the knees to come over the toes (really sit back). I use my arms out in front as a counter balance. When your buns tap the chair, or if you begin to lose your form or have pain, stop and go back up. Repeat 5-20 times. The amount you do depends on how challenging it is for you. Go until you feel a slight burn in the muscle, can no longer maintain form or until the last two repetitions felt pretty challenging. Even if you have knee pain, most people can perform a partial range squat correctly pain free. When performed incorrectly and the heels lift off the ground and the knees go over the toes there is a significant amount of stress placed on the knees. Once you become a master at 2-3 sets of 10-20 squats you can make it harder by trying it on one leg through a smaller range of motion. A lunge is also an incredible leg exercise, and can be performed in multiple different directions for more function. The keys are similar, chest up, tight abs, knee does not come over toe, but in the lunge you take a big step forward, then slowly lower toward the ground, then push back with the lunging leg to your start position. Repeat on the same leg for 5-10 reps, and then switch legs. Lunges challenge balance more than squats so be prepared. These exercises can be done anywhere and produce excellent results. I would work up to 2-3 sets of 10-20 repetitions. There is one side effect of this program, better looking glutes, and just in time for swimsuit season.

A Love Match on the Courts!
S
pokane Club member Eric Hern had us stage a “fake tennis mixer” complete with invitations, raffle prizes and format rules in order to get a group of his and girlfriend Gina Bryan’s tennis playing friends to the Club on the night of March 25. Known to all but Gina, the real reason for the gathering was for Eric to propose to Gina on court after 45 minutes of tennis! She said yes!
Family and friends had a quick celebration upstairs toasting to the happy couple with beer, wine, champagne, and South Perry Pizza!!! Congratulations to the happy couple, a true love match!

Spokane Club Selected as Beta Test Site for GameSetMatch.co
By Jeff Urie When CJ Bordeleau and Marsh Sutherland, founders of gamesetmatch.co, approached me about using the Game Set Match app, I immediately said yes and saw it as an excellent fit for the Spokane Club tennis playing population. This FREE on-line tool helps players find other local players near your ability and allows you to challenge them with a little “skin in the game!” Players risk ranking points every time they play a GSM match. You win a challenge, you gain ranking points, lose a challenge, you move down in ranking points. This unique aspect of GSM puts a little match pressure into the equation. I see GSM as a great way for our members to play more challenging matches at the Club and at other venues making them more prepared when USTA leagues and tournaments roll around. The potential for GSM as a great recruiting tool for Club membership cannot go unnoticed. Getting our Club more exposure to the tennis playing public will enhance our opportunity to reel them in. As an avid player myself, I know anything to get more players playing the great sport of tennis is a great thing! **As an incentive to get everyone using their GSM app, the Spokane Club member playing the most GSM matches before July 4 will receive an Athletic DNA shirt. To sign up, simply go to gamesetmatch.co and enter an email and password to get yourself in the mix! Contact Jeff (535-3554) if you have any questions about gameset match.co at the Club. www.spokaneclub.org | Summer 2017 | 31
