Capital Projects Update By John O’Connor, General Manager
H
appy new year to you all! I hope 2019 is your best year yet, with good times and robust health for you and your families. I want to personally thank you for your continued membership to the Club and hope your membership brings many great years to your life, and life to your years. I’m happy to report more progress on our Capital Projects. These important projects help repair and restore key assets of the Club, maintain and enhance Club properties, and add upgrades to the total member experience of the Club. This work is not without its challenges, the key challenge being decades of deferred maintenance of the buildings themselves. Like the proud owners of historic homes, given the age of the properties and some of their challenges, the list of home improvements can be long. Prioritizing those improvements can be additionally challenging when members of the family all have compelling needs and goals. Such is the way of families, and so too, the family that is the Spokane Club.
2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2019
Capital improvements that are now completed or near completion are: • New security cameras and upgraded software for both Valley and Downtown-Completed • New HVAC unit for kitchen in historic clubhouse—Completed • Modernization and upgrades to one Hotel suite and two standard Hotel rooms upgraded to Deluxe-Completed • HIIT Studio at Valley Spokane Club— in progress and debuting in April at the Valley • Work on both pools -targeted for Summer 2019 New capital improvements that are targeted for 2020 • Updates to IT in order to stay relevant, provide better reporting, and remain secure (ongoing) • Work on the facades of both Downtown and Valley properties (targeted for Summer of 2020)
I want to give kudos to our wonderful, in-house Engineering Team, Aaron, Ed, Wayne, Edeem and David. This multi-talented team takes on the complexities of a constellation of issues that surround our older properties. These are both the planned, long-term and short-term projects, along with all the pop-up projects and emergency repairs that come hand in hand with historic properties. The Engineering team approaches their work with commitment and a shared set of problem –solving skills. I offer sincere thanks and kudos to each of the members of this great team for their dedicated work. The Capital assessments that fund these capital projects have become a best practice among historical clubs like Spokane Club. The cost of this type of restoration, coupled with the age of the buildings and the impact of time, wear and tear, reduced funding and associated deferred maintenance, make “catching up” more challenging. That’s why cost savings, tight and focused attention to allocation of funds, and continued efforts to grow and maintain memberships are all so important. The stronger we are now, the stronger we will become in the future. With that strength comes a better today and a brighter tomorrow. Wishing you all your very best and brightest year! With thanks for your membership, John O’Connor General Manager Spokane Club
Sweet, Suite 310! Renovations include: • Completely remodeled bathroom • Completely remodeled bar • All new furniture and bedding • All new lighting including fixtures • All new art • Freshly painted rooms and more!

HIIT hits the Valley this Spring!
By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief
W
ant a great workout? It’s time to get HIIT fit! HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) has been the darling of the fitness world for a while now and there’s one really good reason why: it really works—and it works hard and smart! The “I” in HIIT is the key to success. It’s the interval training—full-on, best effort given in intense and quick bursts
4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2019
of exercise, followed by a periods of short recovery. Experts say, and users testify, that this method burns more fat in less time. In addition, the high intensity effort increases your need for oxygen, both during the workout and recovery. This effect is called “afterburn” and keeps you burning calories and fat longer than traditional aerobic workouts. “We are really excited to offer this to our
members,” says Molly Benzel, Spokane Club Group Fitness Manager. “It’s the next generation of fitness at Spokane Club. And best of all, this workout is for any fitness level, from the novice beginner to the elite athlete.” The Valley location was chosen as the site for this new equipment because of the more spacious surroundings and great natural light. “The Valley has a natural studio feel to it and is perfect for accommodating larger group exercise,” says Molly. “The two new pieces of equipment coming to the Valley are the HIIT Mill and HIIT Bike. Both of these use ‘Pushing and Pulling’ which means muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance. This adds up to a big calorie burn. Again this is functional movement and fitness. Everyone is invited! Everyone can do this work out!” The new HIIT Studio will debut in early Spring. Check your Club emails and Facebook for announcements and get ready to say hello to your HIIT Fit body! “There’s still work to be done, and trainers to train,” says Molly. ”But this is going to be a game changer in our fitness offerings.”
The new HIIT training studio will feature a Circuit with a combination of strength and cardio exercises to challenge you and offer a full body workout using Kettle Bells, battle ropes, rowing, TRX, planks and pushups, HIIT Mill, HIIT Bike, Gauntlet and so much more. One of the most popular and effective high intensity activities is pushing or pulling to develop leg power and cardiovascular fitness.
The HIIT Mill is a self-powered, non-motorized treadmill with fixed incline designed to develop speed, strength, and explosive power. The HIIT Mill will have you walking on an incline, running hill sprints, or hiking with light resistance to boost your cardio training but work within a smaller footprint.
The HIIT Bike is known as a fan and dual bike. The faster you pedal, the quicker the fan rotates and therefore the higher the resistance. The core is more engaged as you push and pull using your arms and legs, which is great for calorie burning, strength and toning.

Club Cupids Help Deliver an Engagement Surprise!
By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief
T
he groom-to-be was ready to propose. He had the perfect ring; he had a heart bursting with love and excitement. He knew that this woman, Alicia, was THE woman for him. All he needed was a way to get beautiful Alicia out of 1910 Restaurant, where the couple had just had dinner, and into the Library, where Jake planned to propose. Enter Stage Left, John O’Connor, Club GM and Cupid’s right hand man. His accomplice was 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2019
Erin, a 1910 server who was all-in for the romantic caper too. “I approached John at the Front Desk with Alicia’s ring and said that this is happening and I need some help,” says Jake. “When I saw John explode with excitement, I knew I had the right partner in crime.” After coming up with some wild storyline about the credit card machine not processing, John worked to convince Alicia that she would need to come with him to the Front Desk. She wasn’t easily convinced, which gave John some time to run back and forth to the Library to get the fireplace lit and cascades of flowers on the floor. Finally, Alicia agreed to come to the Front Desk, but was instead brought into the Library where Jake waited to propose to her. “John had me so confused, and really I didn’t have time to think about what was going on. John and Erin, our waitress, worked so well together to get me out of the restaurant! I’m still trying to see how I didn’t get what was happening. They were fabulous!”
And of course, Alicia cried when she said yes. None of this, except the engagement ring, was painstakingly planned out. It happened because when Jake needed help, he got it in spades. “I was thinking I only have one chance to do this and I want it to memorable and special for us,” Jake recalls. “I wanted it to be unlike any moment Alicia has ever had in her life. I wasn’t nervous, I was emotional. I was ready to ask my best friend to walk the rest of her days with me.” For Alicia, the actual engagement night was indeed a surprise. The deep kinship that she and Jake feel for each other, however, has been true for a long time. “We’ve been friends for over 9 years,” says Alicia. “We ran into each other about 2 years ago and started dating, as our life circumstances had both changed. The proposal was a huge surprise! We had talked about wanting to get married. I just never thought it would be such a beautiful proposal! I
should have known, because Jake is a romantic.” “When John O’Connor walked me into the Library I was so confused. Then, when I saw Jake standing in front of the beautiful setting, I thought ‘Oh my goodness, oh my gosh, oh this is happening!! Jake is going to propose to me! This is really happening!’” The couple had stayed at the Spokane Club two years ago on their very first weekend getaway from their home town. “The Club staff made that visit so wonderful,” Alicia recalls of the couple’s first visit. “They decorated our room beautifully that first weekend, as Jake wanted it to be very special. We have come back multiple times since then as we love the hotel. We also love the wonderful staff that we have actually made friends with over the years. The best thing about the Spokane Club is the wonderful staff!” The couple hasn’t set a date yet, but they are happily exploring their options. In the meantime, we wish Alicia and Jake all the very best. The feelings, says Alicia, are mutual. “We absolutely love the Club Hotel and both of us are so glad that John and his team were able to assist Jake in proposing to me!”

Heroic Kindness
By Christine Cronin
T
he sky was darkening, storm clouds looming, the horizon bleak. The health of the people was in question, the state of the nation uncertain, my faith in humanity shaken. Enter the hero. The hero always arrives in our darkest moments to save us in our time of need. It was not the strength of the hero that won my heart, it was the hero’s kindness. Kindness, is so often missing in the media, the daily grind, and our distracted world. The hero made me believe at a time of disbelief. Where there is one, there are many, and I knew that to fight the growing darkness we would need more heroes. That brought me to St. Aloysius 14 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2019
School where we are piloting “Heroic,” a PE curriculum working toward developing heroes for humanity. I believe everyone needs a hero, and everyone has the potential to be a hero for somebody else. Just take a minute to look back in time; who helped you along the way? Did you thank them? There are four keys to being a hero: kindness, strength, commitment and resiliency, but the most important is kindness. Kindness means “I care” and is the only thing that separates the hero from the villain. The villain is also strong, committed and resilient, but just doesn’t care about others or the greater good. In order to be kind to others we
must first be kind to ourselves. The students learn three ways to care for themselves: getting proper nutrition, sleep and exercise. Next they learn to be kind to others. One of the best ways to show you care about someone is to listen. We have a growing absence of good listeners in our society. Listening does not mean waiting for your turn to speak, interrupting or being quiet when someone talks. Listening is an art form that involves focus, attention to body language as well as actual language, and asking follow up questions to deepen understanding. When someone truly listens it provides the opportunity for connection. Connecting is key to building deep and meaningful relationships which are a common theme in resilient people. We discuss empathy, which means “I feel how you feel.” When we listen and feel for someone else, more becomes available. It becomes less about me, and more about “we.” We could all benefit from working on our inner hero. Kindness, it’s contagious. Try giving someone a genuine greeting and smile, which is pretty difficult for even a stranger to ignore. Words of encouragement almost always bring joy. If you’re up for a challenge and really want to transform your world and that of others, listen. Try not to judge, simply listen, receive and reflect. Be aware of your posture and body language which should be receptive and engaged. Put yourself in the shoes of the speaker. Don’t advise based on what you would do, you are not them! Listen, then ask a question and learn more. When I say “see the good,” the kids say “be the good! Perhaps if you’re having trouble seeing the good, you need a little more work on being the good. Slow down, look around, and listen; you might be right next to a hero!

ne of the best benefits of belonging to the Spokane Club is connecting with other members and doing business with them. Business connections can develop over lunch, or in the Conditioning Room, or at fun Club gatherings like Trivia Night. Another great way to get your face and business in front of fellow members is through advertising in Signals. Our friendly, affordable Members to Know ads are a great place to start! If you have a business or service you would like to share with fellow members, our Members to Know (MTK) ads are the most cost-effective way to get your message across. As part of Signals magazine, MTK ads are delivered to every member household, and many member businesses, four times per year.
At just $75 per issue, MTK is a great value that gets you noticed! To place an ad, or for more information, please email Kate Spencer at kspencer@spokaneclub.org.

Community Cares Spotlight: Because There Is Hope
B
ecause There Is Hope (BTIH) is a Spokane non-profit created in 2004. The founder of the organization, Melody Biehl, is a breast cancer survivor. When Melody completed her treatment, she was determined to help other cancer patients. Her idea was housing, free housing. Melody spoke with patients during her treatment who were commuting, daily or staying in hotels. They felt isolated being diagnosed with cancer and now, were apart from their home, family and friends. Many were spending their life savings in the process. Because There is Hope is currently housed in a home in Cheney, which BTIH outgrew almost immediately; the need is that great. This house was graciously donated to BTIH until their new home, Melody’s House Of Hope is built.
Cancer Care Northwest has donated property to BTIH and Garco Construction has provided their architectural plans for a seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom home very near the cancer centers and hospitals. Now they need to build and continue to raise more funds for the project. SAVE THE DATE! BTIH’s former annual fundraiser, The Cinderella Tea, has been reinvented for 2019. High Heels and Hard Hats will make its debut on February 23, 2019 at the Spokane Convention Center at 10:30. The tea has become a brunch, as BTIH would like to diversify their audience. They will have silent auction tables, a live auction, including two Alaska Airline vouchers and raisethe-paddle to help with the house; paint, furniture, etc. Speakers will be telling why BTIH is important to them. Robin Nance from KXLY will be the emcee.
A partial list of the organization’s ongoing support: Because There Is Hope’s house-building supporters include: • Boise Cascade, that will provide the wood • Cascade Windows, that will supply the windows and mirrors • KXLY Extreme with Lance Pounder Excavation for clearing the lot • Harris Rebar Monetary support: • Smith-Barbier Progressive Fund • The Pink Shamrock • Larry H. Miller • Northern Quest Resort & Casino • Susan H. Komen (When they were in Spokane) • Inland Northwest Foundation • Numerica Credit Union • Banner Bank • Rockwood Oncology • Cancer Care Northwest

Weddings and Wellness: How One Club Couple Got Fit, Got Married and is Living Happily Ever After!
By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief
W
hen you think of Spokane Club, do you think of fitness, athletics and personal training? Or, do you think of social events, holiday gatherings and milestone celebrations? Many Club members think of one or the other. Whitney and Mitch Youngs think of both, and use the services of all the Club offers to make their lives fuller, healthier and happier. Their approach to using the Club for life worked especially well as the couple prepared for their wedding day on September 15, 2018. 26 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2019
“I used the wedding as some motivation towards HIITing my fitness goals,” says Whitney. “Additionally, we had signed up for the Weight Loss Challenge last year, which was a great way for Mitch and I to both work towards our wedding health goals, while putting a little competition into the whole thing.” Friendly competition is just one of the shared joys that brought this couple together. They met in 2016 in Cheney while both were students at EWU. Mutual friends introduced them and laughter and love ensued.
Jackie Kiley, the Club’s Catering Director, first met Mitch and Whitney when Mitch was planning his ROTC dinner at the Club. Jackie was immediately taken by the then-dating couple’s friendly, positive attitudes. “They truly are delightful and every time I hear their names, I smile. I’m so pleased they held their wedding at the Club.” To get into wedding-ready shape, in addition to joining last year’s Weight Loss Challenge with Mitch, Whitney also did six months of personal training with Tim Arndt, the Club’s Personal Training & Conditioning Room Manager. “I initially chose to work with Tim because I wanted someone who was going to challenge me and also hold me accountable for my choices when it came to my fitness and nutrition.” Tim did indeed hold Whitney accountable, but he also gave her permission to continue to enjoy her favorite foods on occasion and find her own style of her best life. “Tim was a perfect fit for me and what I was trying to achieve at the time,” says Whitney. “I never got bored with my workouts. Tim also made it simple to keep my nutrition in check to lose weight/build muscle but maintained that I still needed to be able to have a life and enjoy a cheeseburger and beer every so often.” “Tim took the time to understand not only my level of current/previous exercise experience but what my knowledge was as far as nutrition and fitness. He built upon what I already knew and bolstered that knowledge to make it more powerful to reach my goals.” An added bonus was that Whitney was able to leave work, have a wedding meeting with Jackie, then get her workout done just a few steps away on the Athletics side of the Downtown Club.
“It was great to get all of that in one place!” Getting married at the Club was a pretty great experience for the couple too. In fact, it was perfect. “First off, the Spokane Club is such an amazing venue,” says Whitney. “It’s beautiful, the staff is wonderful to work with, and what you get for your money is unbeatable. Additionally, because Mitch had previously worked with Jackie for his ROTC event and really enjoyed the whole experience, we felt confident of a great outcome. Working with Jackie is always a wonderful experience. She’s so cheerful and always willing to go out of her way to make sure that every event is special.” There were many special moments for Whitney and Mitch on their wedding day, along with fun memories for the couple and their guests. Whitney recalls some of the highlights. “For our guests, one of the most popular moments was having the Best Man make an appearance at the reception in a wedding dress, followed by him and I having a dance battle, with Mitch being the prize!” “Mitch says that his best moment was seeing me come down the aisle. The second best thing for him was having the patio out back for the guys to enjoy cigars and whiskey prior to the ceremony.” “For me my number one memory--other than marrying Mitch, of course--would be having my bridal party getting ready with me in the Lilac Suite. It was absolutely perfect and totally relaxing. A big shout out to Stephen for making that happen for us! Overall, the day was such an amazing experience and one that I know is still being talked about by our guests.” Along with their wedding, and the workouts that got them prepped for the
big event, both Whitney and Mitch have new and growing interests at the Club. “Mitch’s favorite thing about the Club would have to be the quality of the members,” says Whitney. “He said he feels like he can have a conversation with anyone and they are always friendly.” “My favorite thing about the Club is the amenities that come along with membership. Not only do you get the opportunity to network and create new friendships, you have the gyms, fitness classes, pools, tennis courts, all of the different events, and so much more.” “For me, the Club is a great way to fulfill many of my own needs all at once! I can find new ways to be social through the events and fitness classes, experience new foods and wines at the restaurant, or spend time working out in the fitness center or learning to play tennis.”

Erin Piibor: The Pursuit of Personal and Shared Excellence
By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief
T
aking a leap of faith comes with the territory of living a full and interesting life. Erin Piibor, the Club’s newest personal trainer, knows a lot about living that brave, bold life. Born and raised in Schaumburg, Illinois, Erin attended Indiana State University on a scholarship as the university’s feature baton twirler. While she took the athleticism and spirit-inducing fun of being that star baton twirler, Erin’s intellect was also completely engaged with her university classes. These included lectures and labs in human physiology, biology, anatomy and biomechanics. This harmonious blend of physical and intellectual curiosity, and dedication to helping others meet their personal best, is Erin’s signature style. “I have always loved physical fitness, says Erin. “I appreciate the importance of education in human movement. After earning a M.S. degree in Exercise Science/ Adult Fitness, I continued teaching various dance, activity and lecture classes in physical education while earning a Master of Public Administration (MPA)
degree. Each time I ventured on a new career path, that journey always seemed to lead me back or further into the fitness industry.” From the age of 18, Erin earned her way into the fitness industry and has worked practically every job in the field. From the class instructor to front desk clerk, personal trainer and wellness coach to department head and Club manager, Erin has seen it all. One constant remains: “What I love about this work the most is the people. I love working with each individual, getting to know them and finding their needs and wants. Then putting a plan into action for them to achieve their goals and improve their quality of life!” Erin, her husband Jonas, and their two young boys, Nicholas and Marcus, recently moved to Spokane from Eugene, where they had lived for nearly 10 years. Jonas is the new head tennis coach at Gonzaga University. Nicholas is 9 years old and a 3rd grader at Windsor ElementaryCheney School District. Marcus is 4 years old and attends pre-K at St. Aloysius.
Happily, Spokane is living up to its reputation as a fun and family-friendly place to be. “Spokane is a neat city!” says Erin “We moved here in September and are both originally from bigger cities. It’s been nice to come to an area that has things to do for our two young children. Just like any new place, it has its ups and downs. Starting over is very hard but we are taking each stride with grace and humility. We are especially excited for what the future has to offer!” Happily, the present includes the Spokane Club. A natural networker, Erin did her research on Spokane fitness centers when she got to town and called the Club’s GM, John O’ Connor to introduce herself. The two of them had a great conversation and John invited Erin to come for a Club tour. That experience made a terrific impression on Erin. “I loved the place. Moving forward, I knew I wanted to be part of the Spokane Club, so I contacted the fitness department coordinators to inquire about any available opportunities. The rest is history!” And the future is bright. We are delighted to have Erin on our outstanding team and look forward to future offerings for our members. And by the way, when Erin throws that happy, virtual baton in the air, Spokane Club is something she celebrates too. “Spokane Club is so well-rounded! It has kids’ programs, adult fitness, social, style, networking events and great food. Just looking at our personal training department, the staff is very well-qualified. We all have an immense amount of education and experience that people don’t necessarily see at other facilities. If you want to make a difference or be a part of something special, this is the place to be!” www.spokaneclub.org | Spring 2019 | 29

socializing, eating (catered dishes from our Club restaurant) and upstairs second guessing of shot selection and execution is what the event is all about! Dressed appropriately, the Mxd9.0 match went the way of the 2018 Apple Cup! Dawn Eliassen and Cameron William took it from Kirk and Disa Vradenburg This year, one hundred and forty-five competitors vied for the coveted title of 2018 Spokane Club Champion with bragging rights ultimately falling to the young guns! In the Men’s Open flight it was “Dangerous” Danny Denike taking down the wily veteran Mark Sullivan 6-2; 7-6 in an epic battle of the youngest vs the oldest in the draw. Denike doubled down his singles victory and walked away with the doubles title with partner Tom “Grindhouse” Griner! The women’s open featured two youngsters, Kasie Wilberding, still a youth in my eyes, defeating teen Brook Fager in an action packed match ultimately decided by a match tie-breaker! Hannah Plank and Kellee Bates continued the youth movement by sweeping the women’s open doubles event! It’s always fun to see the various family combinations of father-son/daughter, mother-daughter/son, grandfather-grandson competing and making this a true family event. Although the on court tennis is the primary focus for this annual event, off court

Spokane Club: Best Venue in Spokane, Hands Down! “We chose the Spokane Club for our wedding venue for its historic charm and its perfect location in downtown Spokane. But the real treat ended up being how incredible the staff at the Spokane Club was! Jackie Kiley and her team were truly UNBELIEVABLE. If you have a wedding in Spokane, I would HIGHLY recommend the Spokane Club. It was the best decision we made for the entire wedding!” – Caroline Klein Contact Jackie Kiley, Catering Director (509) 459.4237 or jkiley@spokaneclub.org
