Exterior colours
Make a lasting impression with a standout exterior Your home’s façade creates the ultimate first impression. The exterior of your house should set the tone for what is to come on the inside. There are many exterior trends floating around, and here are some of our favourites which are showing no signs of slowing down.
Keep it cool with neutral colour palettes Neutral colour palettes for house exteriors have become a popular choice for homeowners. Shades of cooler toned colours such as greys, black and white are modern, easy to work with combinations. For a smart and modern look, grey is best complimented with a bold matte black or charcoal roof, joinery and garage door. This helps to break up the large planes of cladding, adding a touch of dimension. Alternatively, add a sense of warmth by mixing a neutral facade with stained cedar cladding features. This adds a layered element to your home, creating character.
key tip: the key to
creating an impactful exterior is to ensure you have contrast and a focal point to prevent colours fading into one.
Finding the right paint with Resene The Resene CoolColour Technology range makes painting exterior surfaces in darker colours easier and safer. Thanks to special pigment technology, colours in the range reflects more heat, so it doesn’t get as hot as a normal colour would.

From villas to baches, New Zealander’s love affair with weatherboard can be seen in many of our historic building designs. An obvious choice for restoring older buildings, the clean horizontal lines of Linea Weatherboard also work beautifully with the expansive surfaces and spaces of contemporary architecture. Some of our favourite Weatherboard products includes James Hardie’s Linea and Linea Oblique Weatherboard.
Wood wood wood Wood is becoming a major part of home exteriors, whether as a small accent, or full siding. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s long-lasting, fairly simple to install, and can be stained, painted, and finished any way you desire.

Fresh air all day with passive ventilation
Windows and doors are a key design feature for your home, but can also play a part in creating a comfortable home all year round. They are an important element to get right, as they have a significant impact on a home’s thermal performance, making it easier to heat and cool your home, reducing energy bills.
On average, we breathe 13,000 litres of air per day and spend around 90% of our day indoors – either at home, work or school. Indoor pollutants such as moisture, allergens, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are trapped inside which impacts our health and performance and can damage buildings. Passive Ventilation can help to introduce fresh air into the building, improve air quality, and reduce energy consumption.

key tip: When choosing windows and doors, consider
Low-E double glazing with an inert gas fill (such as Argon or Krypton) between the glass sheets to slow the flow of heat in and out of your home.

Furniture Slatted and rolled vertical furniture pieces are a current crowd favourite. This style comes through in large and small furniture items such as coffee tables, bedside tables and drawers. Upholstered headboards are another must! Whether that be a deep buttoned or vertical panelled headboard in linen, boucle or velvet.
key tip: when using velvet, try a polyester velvet as a more hard wearing, child and pet friendly option.
Fabrics Boucle is a huge fabric trend coming through into all areas of the home. Especially in whites and creams, for soft furnishings and furniture. It brings in a beautiful strong texture to any room of the house. Linen is also still a favourite, it’s textured look comes in a wide range of colours to suit any style of room. Incorporate full length sheer linen look drapes to add softness, warmth and texture to your bedroom and living space. Back to nature
Interior
In our fast-paced world and ‘always on’ culture, most of us yearn for ways to disconnect. From a place to sleep, eat and take a shower, our personal space has now, once again, become the most meaningful place in our lives: one that may also have to do double duty as a workplace but still needs to facilitate rest and rejuvenation.
with
While nature itself has long been a common inspiration for home décor, woodland tones including silvery sages such as Resene Bud, muddy stone greys like Resene Nomad, jades like Resene Palm Green and olive greens such as Resene Saratoga are among the most popular trending hues.
paint trends Resene
key tip: bring in natural textures and stain timber in Resene Colorwood wood stain to reinforce nature’s touch.
Cool & Calming Evocative of the sea and the sky, the colour blue brings together the deepest depths of the ocean with lightness of the seventh cloud. It stands for integrity, power, tranquillity and health and is considered as beneficial to the mind and body. Blue is one of those hues that always seems to be relevant, and its wide range of appealing hues offer so much diversity, which makes it easy to keep finding fresh and exciting alternatives to the shades of years past.
key tip: continue your chosen light blue from your walls onto your ceiling to soften the room edges for a more cocooning space.
Neutrals with soul Given the efforts to turn our spaces into more relaxing places to spend time, we’re embracing living a more clutter-free and thoughtful life. Shades associated with minimalism, such as creams, beiges, greys, taupe and whites, have always been popular choices for anchoring interior colour palettes. But until recently, it seemed like the neutral everyone was after was cold, steely grey and it was seen as the epitome of what’s fresh and contemporary.
Dark & dramatic Deep, fully saturated colours have captured the imaginations of courageous colour lovers seeking a refreshingly different look for their homes. Moody blues, greys and browns in particular, such as Resene Indian Ink, Resene Armadillo and Resene Monkey are making some serious waves, especially when layered with darker and lighter variations in tonal schemes. These hues are ideal for building up a deeply layered cocoonworthy look in spaces where you want to linger longer, such as a bedroom or lounge.
key tip: when opting
for dark and dramatic colours, keep in mind that you may need to adjust your lighting. Use lamps, accent lighting and dimmer switches to help create the right mood.
