In this new format, the printing industry will together experience highly focused hosted tracks and vendor-customer interaction. The sign and print industries aren’t the only ones whose conventions and tradeshows have been whacked into repurposing for today’s stay-at-home atmosphere, as hospitality-, retail-, and entertainmentrelated associations are also reconfiguring potential attendees through Internet means. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more focus on Webinars and interactive online conferences for the remainder of this year. I think this has the potential to be an interesting solution going forward, as well as an interesting way to make certain that more people will be able to have the opportunity to attend and participate. But part of me still hopes that this is a one-off solution to get us through the oft-cited “new norm.” The one thing I recognized I took for granted before this pandemic hit was in-person interaction, and I still think this remains a vital component to the signage industry, particularly when it comes to purchasing equipment. Hopefully the other shows you see to the right will still find a safe way to take place, but lots of eyes will be looking to see what happens this October.

ver since the pandemic found its way to our country back in February and put to rest any sort of semblance of being able to confidently make plans whatsoever, I have to admit that probably the single hardest thing to put together each month for our magazine is our “Agenda” calendar of events you’ll find to the right-hand side of this column. Shows are either throwing in the towel on this year and moving on to planning for the next, or else they keep sliding further ahead on the calendar. Right now, USSCF Sign Exchange is in limbo (scheduled for December 3-5), but an announcement should be coming soon on the fate of this year’s show one way or the other. Meanwhile Digital Signage Expo (DSE) has shifted again—still to be held in Las Vegas but now in November. The big shoe to drop as I’m typing up this month’s column is that PRINTING United has decided to push ahead—only transitioning now to cyberspace instead of a physical event. Now being rebranded as “PRINTING United Insight Days,” this “community-based, content-rich” event will be running online at the organization’s Web site October 5 through October 26. This online solution will announce product launches while still allowing browsers the opportunity to check out participating companies and attend Webinars of interest. According to their press release, this new digital experience will kick off each week by highlighting a different printing market: apparel, commercial, digital textile, graph-

of Signarama, noting that his company is made up of businesses of all sizes. “We wanted to create an initiative that would encourage and inspire our business owners to encourage and inspire their customers and communities.” In addition to the free signage, the group is selling Reopening America Together-branded products including a storefront sign, a window sign, a T-shirt, and a bracelet. ANVILLE, ILLINOIS—The town of Ventura, Iowa is nicknamed “Iowa’s Sportsman’s Paradise” because of its popularity for hunting and fishing. Town officials recently selected a new exterior Watchfire Signs digital message center for its Ventura Community Center, after becoming frustrated with the failure of another LED display installed years ago. A small community of 717 residents, Ventura’s seasonal population actually quadruples when outdoor enthusiasts flock to the area. The community center is located in the hub of the community, and the message center is viewable from a busy intersection along the lake route. Cedar River Signs Inc., of Charles City, Iowa, was able to retrofit the original concrete structure housing the message center with a new 10mm 3-foot-5-inch-by-6-foot-3inch full-color Watchfire display. Now the message center is used to provide residents and visitors information on fishing and boating, as well as elections, weddings, fish fries, and other events. During the pandemic, Ventura officials have also been able to program messages encouraging social distancing, including one that recommends “two fishing poles between people.”

ARE WE THERE YET? • •

Most of us can identify with this question, especially those of us that have taken long road trips with our parents or kids. My three sisters and I asked this question all the time. At one point, my dad, completely sick of it, came up with a great conversation stopper –“Well, actually, we’ve passed it. I’m not sure where we’re going, but we’ll know when we get there”. WOW, what do you say to that? In thinking about the events over the past few months, how many times have we asked ourselves, or others, a similar question – when will we get to the new normal? How will we know? Good questions and not a lot of good answers, unfortunately, especially for those of us in the business world or those owning a business. My own thought is that we are on a journey, a continuous one, to reach a destination of sorts. We need to be looking at our businesses as on a journey as well, right now. What do I mean by this? Let me explain. I spent 20 years as a turnaround professional in the printing industry. My job was to go into failing companies, $1MM-$50MM in size and losing money, fix them, and make them profitable, viable, and sustainable entities. Each one had different issues, customers, and products, but in the end, the process was the same – a continuous process or journey from point X to Y. By all accounts, each of our businesses needs to be on this journey today to become more efficient and profitable in the long run. And why the need for efficiency: •
•
Very short-run printing will be the name of the game. This can be costly if you are not prepared with staffing, processes, and a highly focused customer orientation. An estimated 30% of the printing companies are expected to go out of business.
A surplus of printing equipment will result with the equipment available at low cost. There will likely be a reduced number of customers, i.e. retail accounts and locations. Demand will be shrinking faster than supply. An accelerated consolidation of print solution providers means fewer, very competitive, and highly aggressive companies in the marketplace.
So, what can you do to make yourself more efficient and competitive? Here is a list of things that I used religiously to make each of my companies successful along with some examples: First up, product line rationalization. Do you know which of your products is making money and which are losing money? Know this and make a rational decision to continue producing them – maybe they are part of a larger sale to a large customer which, overall, is profitable – or discontinue producing them. Second and one of the most difficult – rationalizing your customers. Which accounts are making money, and which are not? It’s uncomfortable, awful, but has to be done. Example: During my turnaround tenure with one of the PitneyBowes companies, we took a hard look at each of our accounts from a profitability standpoint. In the case of Federated Department Stores, a name with a lot of cachet, a great customer, and one that was ideal to have on our reference list, we found they accounted for 60% of the orders and 5% of the revenue. We even had a whole separate production area and flow for them along with significant labor to support the business. It became clear that this was not a sustainable business and, as hard as it was, we had to part ways or have them accept a 250% price increase so we could make money. They opted to leave us. We adjusted our production, and within 2 months, we were on our way to becoming cash rich. There is also a point of strategy here: If you’re giving up some business that is not profitable, hope that one of your competitors get it. Third, reduce cycle time. This is one of the fastest ways to pick up business and maintain higher margins if you manage it well and have 98%+ on-time performance. This also brings up another point of strategy that I love and works very well. I learned it from 3M. Not only would we work on reducing our turn times by one day, we also made the plans to reduce them by 2 days. Why? We would roll out the 1-day reduction,
increase price and margins. Competition would see what was happening and inevitably figure out how to do it, too. This is the point where you drop your turnaround a second time, keep the premium pricing while working on the next reduction, and leave the competition in the dust. You’re now one step ahead, unless they try to make a giant leap (which I’ve not seen work yet.) Fourth, with everything in the process of being shutdown again, remote monitoring of your operation via mobile apps along with automated maintenance will give you a leg up to keep your production running smooth. Fifth, drive quality and production improvement through the use of LEAN, Six Sigma, 5 Why’s, etc. Not only will customers love the high quality, but you’ll love the potentially higher margins that you get from higher prices and/or improved efficiencies in production. For more information, I suggest reading Michael Porter’s Competitive Strategy or Eli Goldratt’s The Goal. These are excellent books to help you determine where you fit and how to get to where you want to go. There’s a lot of work here, lots of work, but well worth it in the long run. There are also software tools out there that can help you along. HP’s PrintOS cloud-based system is one such tool that is both open and secure while working with the large format printer portfolio AND it’s FREE to use. Not all printers come with the entire suite. Each printer type is provided with the modules that make the most sense for it. Here is a quick overview of some of the modules and what each can do:

The main public plaza is the perfect spot for taking in the scenic views, both of the water and also overhead. This is also where fifteen rings of iLight Plexineon seem to float aloft at night. And this is the story of how this IES Illumination awardwinning project was brought to life. One Design Challenge (of Many) The idea for these floating circles of light
was conceived by Gilmore Lighting Design of Potomac, Maryland after the firm was brought onto the project by nearby Landscape Architecture Bureau (LAB). Debra Gilmore, president and principal at Gilmore Lighting Design, utilized layers of light for the different scope locations (architectural, landscape, and site) to establish a visual hierarchy relating to activity within the locations.

erched along the Potomac River and located within a short walk of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., sat a mile-long stretch of waterfront property that was not only being underutilized by residents but also being ignored by tourists. However that perception all changed recently when a $2.5 billion development transformed the area into a new, bustling 24-acre neighborhood known as “The Wharf” or “District Wharf.” This makeover has turned the area into an attraction for local residents and tourists alike. There are plenty of features and amenities now at District Wharf: concert venues, retailers, restaurants, hotels, residences, and businesses. There is also the restored, historic Oyster Shed, which is now part of the new Washington Fish Market and adjacent to the floating Municipal Fish Market (the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the country).

When they pitched their proposal, it was met with enthusiasm. An additional challenge was that Gilmore and her team were brought aboard in the final stages of the project. With a sign on the construction site counting down the days to completion of the project’s first phase, a deadline was looming. Fortunately Gilmore already had iLight Plexineon in mind, after using it in previous projects where curved fixtures were mounted to a surface, to form the circles. She hoped iLight could help her create the circles—and suspend them—so she sent the company drawings of what they were trying to accomplish. The iLight team confirmed to Gilmore that the Plexineon she had in mind could be bent to form the circles and be suspended from aircraft wire. “With all of the cables angled, rather than horizontal, [we had to build] a custom mounting,” she says, noting her team also worked with iLight to determine electrical component sizes and how the connections would work. Reflections and Reactions The end-result is a stunning feature that creates a formal, monumental pedestrian entrance to the fish market while attracting both business tenants and customers. Gilmore was also pleasantly surprised by how the luminaires also work within the context of all the surrounding elements. “A Tiki bar added a lot of colored lights that reflect on the rings in a unique way,” she says. Another happy surprise was how the Plexineon Rings unexpectedly interact with blue lighting along a nearby overpass. “The reflections are really fun,” says Gilmore. Five Years Later Reanalyzing the impact of Reed v. Gilbert.

T
his summer, an important anniversary passed by with hardly any notice: The Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling in Reed v. the Town of Gilbert turned five. This is no mere historical note, at least not for our industry. In the last five years, Reed has turned sign regulations across the country upside down. And now, with other cases making their way through the courts that seek to expand or redefine Reed, we face another potential upending. First, a little context: Reed was a case in which the Town of Gilbert, Arizona had limited a church’s ability to use temporary directional signs. The church’s signs were treated differently than other kinds of temporary sign users. The Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling affirmed that sign regulations cannot be content based and forced thousands of communities across America to revise their local ordinances

to make sure they don’t violate the First Amendment rights of sign users. In the five years since Reed, ISA has worked with hundreds of local communities as they have reviewed and amended their sign codes to comply with the court’s decision. We’ve also trained thousands of local planners who had to navigate these complex issues through Webinars, workshops, and resources. ISA relies heavily on the peer-reviewed, university-led research from the Sign Research Foundation (SRF) for much of its work. Meanwhile the Reed decision has been reverberating throughout state and federal courts. In May, a case reached the Supreme Court that relies heavily on the logic of Reed. However, this case, Barr. American Association of Political Consultants, Inc., isn’t about signs but instead involved automated phone calls (“robocalls”). Congress had created an exception for
those calls that dealt with collecting government debt; political groups argued that distinction was content based. In California, freelance journalists want to apply Reed to the state’s controversial law AB 5, arguing that other professions have been exempted from the law’s onerous provisions. AB 5 limits how many assignments a freelancer can perform before being considered a full-time employee—proving just how far a court case like Reed can stretch. This case is currently before the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. While those two cases are not specifically related to our industry, any court ruling that limits or expands Reed could have a direct impact. But let’s focus here on Reed’s continued application when it comes to signage, especially the on-premise vs. off-premise distinction. In 2017, Thomas v. case against the Tennessee Department of Transportation, with the federal district court ruling that the state’s on- vs. off-premise distinction was content-based and therefore unconstitutional. The decision reflected an interpretation based on the Reed v. Town of Gilbert decision. The case was appealed to the Sixth Circuit, which reaffirmed that the government cannot distinguish between on-premise and off-premise signs. The Tennessee Attorney General has filed a petition to have the U.S. Supreme Court hear the case. However, as of this writing, no decision has been announced whether Thomas v. Bright will be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court. But the finding already has an impact. This past April, a federal district court used the Thomas v. Bright ruling in Kentucky, which is in the same U.S. Sixth Circuit Court jurisdiction. In that case, the judge found that a gentleman’s club could continue using a billboard advertising its services after the state ordered its removal based on its Highway Beautification Act guidelines. This particular case reiterated that distinctions between on-premise and off-premise signs violate the Reed ruling. For our industry, however, using Reed and Thomas to solve the onpremise vs. off-premise debate is particularly troublesome. The concern is that cities and states would create new restrictions for on-premise signs rather than loosen restrictions for off-premise signs. The trickle down would be a more challenging business environment—both for our end-users and for sign and graphics companies. This distinction is important (and practical) since on-premise and offpremise signs have separate and unique functions. A sign company assembles a team to cure a VA hospital’s wayfinding woes.

he Dallas VA Medical Center (Dallas VAMC) is a part of the VA North Texas Health Care System, which is Veterans Affairs’ second largest health care system. It serves over 113,000 veterans and delivers one million outpatient episodes of care each year. It’s no surprise then that the hospital’s wayfinding system is key in helping visitors and patients navigate the campus. As the hospital has renovated, expanded, and relocated services and offices, their 15-yearold existing, modular signage program functioned well, but it began to show its age and needed to be updated.

Diagnosing the Problem 2/90 Sign Systems in Grand Rapids, Michigan—a 42-year-old business with roots in modular, architectural signage systems— did all of the work on the original sign system 15 years ago, and they returned to handle the update. “We worked with the VA to update and create a new design standard for the facility that blended their needs from an aesthetic standpoint but also from a functional standpoint,” explains Senior Sales Manager Chris Douma. This can be difficult when dealing with a campus as large as the Dallas VAMC’s. “That presents one of the major problems with wayfinding. Most of these VA hospitals typically start with one large building but then as the population of veterans that goes to those hospitals grows, they have to build more buildings,” says 2/90 Sign Systems Field Operations Manager James Sutton. “Tying all those buildings together in a wayfinding sense can be a challenge.” To meet that challenge, 2/90 Sign Systems assembled a team that included Wayfinding Associates on the design and sign planning and S2 Ventures on the architecture, engineering, and general project management work. “It’s very rare for one company to do everything—especially in large, major projects,” says Douma. “The right companies on the right team can really solve wayfinding challenges.
“Together we assembled what was called an integrated project delivery team with the VA key stakeholders to design, develop, and implement this signage program.” Treatment #1: Exterior Signage The wayfinding program starts from the moment a patient or visitor arrives on campus, continues as they travel to their destination, and finishes when they exit the facility. “The scope covered six buildings that were patient, healthcare-focused buildings,” says Douma. “The overall campus is quite large and there’s a lot of other buildings on site. But the six buildings were all unique, they had unique services and unique destinations for folks, but they all kind of blended together.” 2/90 broke the project up into a series of phases. “The first phase was to finalize and complete the exterior. The VA had partially implemented a signage package on the exterior campus, so our goal was to work with the VA to refine it and complete it,” says Douma. “Part of that refinement included naming and color coding the parking zones so that it was clear where people were.” Digitally printed wraps on 3M vinyl were applied to poles to identify parking zones. Other exterior signage was fabricated from SignComp aluminum sign posts and cabinets. The elements were painted with Matthew’s Acrylic Polyurethane and reflective vinyl graphics were applied. “There were several different sign types in the exterior package, but all of them had a frame with a changeable panel,” says Douma. Treatment #2: Interior Signage For the interior signage, one goal was to bring a warmer, more healing element into the design. “There was a lot of discussion early on in the project about selecting the right color palette to have the signage stand out but also blend in with the aesthetics of the environment,” says Douma. The Dallas VAMC chose to select from 2/90’s own color palette of paint colors, laminates, and finishes for longevity purposes. “If they need to add a new sign or August 2020

PEOPLE USE DIFFERENT LANDMARKS, MILESTONES, OR RECOGNITION ELEMENTS IN ORDER TO NAVIGATE A SPACE. replace inserts, to have something that’s readily available from 2/90 as a standard color finish was important.” In addition to updating the aesthetic, 2/90 also brought everything up to current codes and standards relating to ADA, room identification, life safety and regulatory, etc. The interior signage employs a three-layered wayfinding system. First, the 2/90/VA Integrated Project Delivery Team collaborated on a building naming convention. “There were some architectural names, like building numbers, that were historically used that we utilized,” says Douma. “We also named the function of the building because most patients may not know if it’s building one or 100 but they do know if it’s a hospital or the mental health clinic.” Second, color was introduced into the 40

sign package as an additional identification measure for each building. Finally, they also introduced imagery. The team explored and presented several themes to the VA leadership and ultimately settled on a patriotic theme that uses images like the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, a bald eagle, the Capitol Building, etc. “It really speaks to human behavior with wayfinding and navigation and how people use different landmarks, milestones, or recognition elements in order to navigate a space,” says Douma. The Dallas VAMC selected 2/90’s Slide™ Modular Sign System to use for the interior, which is the only open-ended sign system on the market. Not only can the messages be changed, but the sign can expand and accept insert reconfigurations
onsite to adapt to an ever-changing environment. “As facility change happens, they can update that sign accordingly without having to replace it,” says Douma, “which offers a benefit that a rigid plaque or another type of product doesn’t offer.” The extensive selection of three basic aluminum components (rails, inserts, and end caps) allows the Slide modular sign system to be customized into a near infinite variety of sizes, finishes, and configurations. “The insert substrates vary based on the graphic need. Most of it was ABS or photopolymer, or we have an extruded aluminum carrier that holds paper for a window insert,” explains Douma. “With those different insert configurations and properties, we build signs that meet the needs.” Douma gave the example of a room identification sign that has an insert with integral ADA for room identification, a window insert for employee name and title, and an insert with a sliding component to identify if the room is available. The inserts slide onto the structural 2/90 rail and the the end caps lock the inserts into place. Enhanced backers also helped to bring the sign system into the wayfinding theme as well as create a hierarchy of signage. “To identify key destinations for patients or important decision points, behind that 2/90 slide structural rail sign is an enhanced backer,” says Douma. “It’s made out of acrylic and is painted second surface and then there are some first surface graphics that are applied to the front of the acrylic. Some different sign types had dimensional letters applied to that enhanced backer to tie everything together.” Treatment #4: Timelines The Dallas VAMC project also included a number of timelines, which served as both wayfinding and branding elements. VA 1sts. 2/90 fabricated two timelines dedicated to “VA 1sts,” which aimed to highlight some of the medical milestones that the VA has spearheaded and developed over time. The buildings involved in the wayfinding project were correlated to VA medical discoveries that occurred around the age of each building—for example, Building 2 is associated with the 1958 development of the pacemaker. signshop.com
To further drive home the wayfinding, each building’s associated color, number, and imagery was incorporated into the panel design. For example, Building 2’s panel includes the color blue, the Capitol Building, a map of the building with its number, and a picture of the actual building. “A visitor who’s looking at this display is seeing this discovery and they’re tying it together with color, with imagery, and with a physical map and picture of the building so that they understand where they are in the environment,” says Douma. The Dallas VAMC wanted something durable, so the two timelines are built out of high-pressure digitally printed laminate on a hard, rigid board. 2/90 worked with a supplier for the printing onto the laminate. 2/90 fabricated cut acrylic dimensional letters using its MultiCam 3000 CNC Router and MultiCam MG Series Router, which were painted first surface and then affixed to the panels. MBS Standoffs were used to affix the panels to the walls. The only difference between the two timelines was that in one location, the hallway had existing recessed alcoves illuminated by color-changing LEDs. The alcoves were the perfect size and shape for the panels, so the timeline was installed there. VA North Texas. A second timeline was dedicated to the history of the VA North Texas Health Care System’s physical property dating from the 1940s to the present. The timeline was fabricated in multiple layers starting with the Texas-shaped backing, which 2/90 routed from ABS using its MultiCam routers. The message was direct-printed to the surface of the ABS. On top of that were several pieces of acrylic that 2/90 direct-to-surface printed with images sourced by the VA from the national VA archive in Washington, DC. Below the images is the timeline with dates and milestones, which is painted acrylic topped with digitally printed graphics. Five sandwich acrylic poster holders are affixed to the timeline with standoffs. All the graphics were printed in-house on two direct-to-substrate flatbed Canon (Océ) printers.
model that had become a sort of wayfinding landmark of its own. However, it was so old that it no longer reflected the campus. The A/E partner on 2/90’s team, S2 Ventures, worked with Dallas architectural model fabricator GRG Group to create an updated model, which is easily updateable
as sections can be removed and replaced. The model also ties in the wayfinding colors using lighting. When a visitor pushes a button associated with a particular building, it lights up in the wayfinding color— helping to close the wayfinding loop of the larger campus on a much smaller scale.

Howard James is the owner and operator of the first FASTSIGNS franchise that opened in the Washington, D.C., area, and today his store is one of the leading centers across the entire FASTSIGNS network (which totals more than 725 locations across nine countries). Interestingly, before opening up his brick-and-mortar FASTSIGNS, James was an art teacher in Washington, D.C. He also hailed from a background in graphic design (doing freelance design work on the side for numerous years) as well as taught theater technology at Duke
Ellington High School of the Arts. His big career move into signage was borne out of necessity back in 2007. James found that he was driving fortyfive minutes out from D.C., into the suburbs for a specialty service like signage (which also involved viewing proofs and picking up orders) and then driving fortyfive minutes back. “I was thinking, ‘Why don’t we have one of these here in the city?’” he says. “Back then, the Internet wasn’t what it is today.” With his artist-driven background, James figured the sign industry would be signshop.com

James credits his staff for helping him achieve success at his shop.
a good leap for him, however he admits that, while he knew a few things about the equipment and the products out there, he didn’t have a “super-deep background” when it came to starting up a brand-new business. He knew a franchise would be the way to go, so he talked to lots of other FASTSIGNS owners about their stores. “Although they all said different stuff, they said all the right stuff I was looking to hear,” confirms James, noting how everyone he spoke with was pleased with the system. James says a lot of people early on make the mistake of not talking to the other franchisee owners. “Don’t go to just one. Don’t go to two. Go to ten,” he recommends. “See if you can visit and spend a day with them and see if that world is going to work out for you.” As mentioned earlier, James’s FASTSIGNS store ended up being the first one in the city, and he attributes his early success to location, location, location. “There weren’t too many sign companies in D.C., anyway,” he says, “so it just took off. And I appreciated the training and support I received from FASTSIGNS headquarters to help me make this happen.” Of course, there was more work involved in getting his sign shop up and running—a lot of it involving items potential business owners don’t think about at first but still have to do. This involved 44

getting caught up with government regulations and filings such as setting up a Federal Tax EIN number. “When people ask me about starting a business, I tell them, ‘Get that organization and paperwork ready,” he advises. “Get a bank account in your business name so that you have somewhere to store your cash. Then when you spend it, it’s deductible. “After that, you’ll be ready for everything else that comes your way.” James’s FASTSIGNS is full-service all

IT’S A TEAM SPORT. the way. “Solutions are what we do,” he says. “Whatever you need, we’re going to figure it out—whether it’s a sign or something atypical. “When you start out, you think you’re going to make banners and basic signs, but every day, we get a call from a customer that we have to ask them, ‘You want us to do what?’ And we have to figure out what combination of materials and solutions to put together to make it happen. In some ways, it’s a headache, but it does keep it exciting.”
When James opened his FASTSIGNS store in D.C., his initial staff included just three people— himself, a designer, and a front counter sales person. “The three of us just put our heads down, got to work, and grew it,” he says, noting they’ve grown to as many as twenty employees. Their results have certainly been impressive. Today his current FASTSIGNS is housed in a 10,000-square-foot brickand-mortar building, and this is actually the store’s second location. James stresses that one thing he advises to other shop owners is the importance of hiring a great staff. “This is not a single-person business. It’s a team sport,” he says, noting he wouldn’t have been able to reach the success level that he has without the employees he’s brought onboard. “Make sure you find, train, and keep a great staff, because they are the key to growth.” Howard James is an African-American business owner, and his staff is predominantly African American. “We pride ourselves in being a Black-owned and Black-operated company, but we’re first and foremost about our customers and offering solutions to them,” he says. “It really doesn’t matter what we are as long as they’re happy.” James says that, although his city is pretty ethnically diverse, unfortunately he has occasionally come across situations where people have been a little surprised when a person of color shows up. “Even though we gave them the right answers, they may not have been comfortable with what they didn’t expect. We have to deal with that every day,” he says. “On the flip side, there are people that are just happy to see us and are happy to get their signs. “It’s about putting your best foot forward and giving the best service you can. And hopefully that’s enough.” One thing James did early on, being in D.C., was getting the proper government certifications. Looking back over his past fourteen years in the industry, James cites two projects that proved a huge boost for his company. The first involved a big government contractor that was in the business of buying up smaller tech companies and rebranding them. “There were a lot of times we’d go into their offices and didn’t dare ask what they did,” he laughs. signshop.com
They started out doing one-offs for them. This happened early on after they opened, and after a screw-up on one project, James was proactive and told them they were going to work on it until they made it right. “And we made it right, and they were happy with us for doing so,” he says. The end-result is that James’s FASTSIGNS ended up managing and completing three national rebranding projects for this contractor. James credits this contractor as being a great project for them. “They kept coming back to us, since they were very happy with our work,” he says. “We set the standard in what they did in the industry. It helped us grow and helped us learn about other vendors and companies all over the country.” Another project James fondly recalls was the local metro system that runs through D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. They were replacing all the signs at every metro stop—which required tens of thousands of new ones. “We figured out how

to make it happen efficiently and cost effectively,” he says, “and we were able to get our crews out there to do changes in a remarkable amount of time.” (Note: James attributes his background to his
shop’s ability to figure out cost-effective solutions. “In theater, we were always looking for ‘cost-effective,’” he says.) James says that this metro system project really shifted his store to another

level. “And once we reached that other level, we stayed there and kept growing,” he says. “As a small company, those are the sort of jobs where you get lucky someone comes to you, and you’re in the right place at the right time.” Being full-service, James’s shop has most of the toys to keep them going into all sorts of markets—flatbeds, laser engravers, cutters, additive ADA printing, etc. “You’d be amazed how many types of signs and applications are out there and, with just a different combination of materials and solutions, you can figure out most of them,” he says. “I invested early on in all our equipment just because we wanted to be able to control what we did—the timing of it and the cost of it. We have some good thirdparty vendors, but you do find yourself working on their schedule.” James loves doing ADA signage because his shop can get a good bulk of work at just one location. He would like to venture more into interior décor at
some point—museum displays, wallpapers, atmospheres, etc. “I really like that kind of work, but again, that’s probably my scenic background,” says James. James has found that D.C., is a great installation market, and it’s one of the reasons installation plays a big role at his business. In fact, his FASTSIGNS does an average of a couple every day. They currently have four vehicles— running the gamut from vans to buckets to trucks. “When you work in the city, you have to be flexible and start thinking if you’re going to be going into a garage or are you going to carry something that’s huge or are you going to need to go up to the second or third floor somewhere,” he says. James says that sometimes they do a “straight-out” purchase on the vehicle because they can sometimes be rough on vehicles. “So we don’t necessarily need a brand-new vehicle with what we’re going to do with it,” he says. “With that and equipment, a lot of times we do a lease-
to-own option. It’s really about buying it outright and paying for it over time and keeping cash in your pocket.” So while James still finds that doing sign work is an “everyday hustle,” he says it’s still a great business to be involved in. “People always need signs,” he says. “It’s quick-paced and service-oriented, and you’ve got to be ready.” And after fourteen years of successfully running his FASTSIGNS store, signage is definitely now wired into Howard James’s system. “I drive my wife crazy when she’s driving because I’m telling her to take a look at that type of sign or letting her know that my shop did that sign,” he laughs.

T
he mission of Redbud Pediatrics in Wichita, Kansas is to coordinate and provide quality care based on the needs of the children visiting their facility. The medical center was opening up a brand-new clinic, which meant there was going to be the need for a new identity sign strategically to be placed in their parking lot perpendicular to two busy streets. Catering to kids, Redbud Pediatrics knew that they wanted their new identity sign to look inviting and colorful. They also wanted it to incorporate some of the architectural elements of their new location, as signshop.com
well as the clinic’s visual branding, to ensure that it would stand out and immediately be recognized. Thanks to the work of full-service TriMark Signs (also of Wichita) and foam-core wholesale supplier Signs By Benchmark of Watertown, South Dakota, Redbud Pediatrics now has a dynamiclooking, multi-dimensional sign that does its intended job extremely well. However it took some major design rework and engineering ingenuity early on to make this sign a healthy reality. TriMark Signs fabricates and installs interior and exterior signage of all types, and
they had worked with Redbud Pediatrics on its signage needs for the past decade. So it made obvious sense that the shop would be brought onboard this project. However, according to Tyler McFadden, the TriMark Signs sales representative overseeing this project, the multiple sign

design ideas that the Redbud Pediatrics graphic designer initially provided to him were going to be nearly impossible to replicate. The designs were more artistic-based than engineering-based. “There was just zero chance to fabricate anything that they were wanting us to do,” says McFadden. “What they brought us was ideas, and then we just had to figure out how to turn that into a sign. None of their ideas had anything to do with practicality as far as sign building goes.” The final selection featured an overall round design, approximately six feet in diameter and two feet deep.The sign appears to have layers of various finishes, one replicating the building siding and another featuring a custom design embossed into the expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam core. The rounded EPS foam core Redbud Pediatrics portion of this identity monument sign measures 73-11/16 inches wide and 71-1/4 inches tall. It features raised lettering as well as a raised logo (a baby bluebird wearing a stethoscope). The carved sections jut out at different dimensions— nine, twelve, eighteen, and twenty-four inches, respectively. Meanwhile the distinctive branding colors associated with the Redbud Pediatrics brand swirl around the bluebird and clinic name in various rounded sizes. Fortunately TriMark has had a part48

nership with Signs By Benchmark ever since 2017, and they realized the company’s EPS foam core material would be ideal here, given the sign’s shapes and geometries. “It wasn’t something that could be made out of aluminum,” says McFadden. “It was just so artsy and couldn’t have been fabricated out of anything else. It had to be a formed thing. [Benchmark] makes molds, and they fill it with foam so that it’s just one solid piece. “The sign was so intricate and had grooves cut out of it everywhere.” McFadden provided Signs By Benchmark with 2-D vector drawings of the front and side views with a ton of specs and explanations. CNC routers were employed to carve out the designs from multiple pieces of one-pound-density EPS foam core. Closer inspection shows that Signs By Benchmark routed the heart details featured on the top rounded pattern into the face of the circular foam piece. The completed sign boasts four striking colors with a stucco finish and foam lettering. Signs By Benchmark painted the entire sign. Multiple PANTONE® paint colors were used here: Orange PMS 7417c, Blue PMS 2985c, Yellow PMS 129c, Gray PMS 425c, and White. Signs By Benchmark adhered the

multiple routed sections together before encapsulating the entire sign with their signature polyurea hard coat to provide the desired durability and longevity. Signs By Benchmark shipped the entire sign to TriMark as one single piece. One thing that McFadden likes about the EPS foam core signs is that they are simple and require no welding. On-site installation of the Redbud Pediatrics EPS foam core sign only took an hour-and-a-half to perform. TriMark Signs started by first making sure the footing size and depth complied with the local sign code. They then used their bucket truck to guide the monument sign into place. “[The sign] has a steel pole in it that goes down into a pier that’s filled with concrete, as you would find with a typical monument or pylon sign,” explains McFadden. “And then, inside of that Benchmark sign, they leave a hole where they slide a five-inch-diameter PVC tube into it. We fill that tube with expanding foam as it’s slid over it. It sets up in about twenty minutes, and it’s solid as a rock.” According to TriMark Signs, the Redbud Pediatrics staff love the finished sign—especially the design and the colors. They even found it “refreshing” that the sign company was able to capture their individuality through the signage. signshop.com

A shop hits record monthly sales during COVID-19.
W
h e n t h e C OV I D - 1 9 pandemic first hit home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, local business owner Jared Ostendorf decided that failure was not going to be an option for himself and the community that he loves. Ostendorf has owned his printing and marketing franchise International Minute Press Fayetteville for eleven years now, and as an essential business, he was able to remain open and use his company for good. Once the city restrictions lifted, Ostendorf supplied local restaurants and other open businesses with one hundred free banners stating “We Are Open/ Takeout is Available” that can still be seen around town. He also launched a free community Web site (Bounce Back Fayetteville) to support local businesses. To date, 120 area businesses have taken advantage of these free listings
that allow community members to support local businesses to help stimulate local economic growth and recovery, as well as receive a free COVID-19 awareness and prevention poster that they can display in their business to keep everyone safe. All of his efforts have paid off as Ostendorf ended up doubling his monthly gross sales in May 2020, reaching record highs at the height of COVID-19. On the success of his business during these times, Ostendorf says, “I always go by the philosophy that we don’t tell a customer ‘no.’ When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we didn’t stop. We got creative and listened to our customers. “I looked at closing or taking time off as a personal failure, so we did everything we could to stay open, and our efforts paid off.” Ostendorf has been a longstanding member of the President’s Million-

Dollar Circle for his franchisor Minuteman Press International, which makes the story of his recent sales success even more impressive. His goodwill went a long way. “We wanted to do something to support local businesses because we are a local business,” says Ostendorf. “We generated new business from other open businesses who learned about our wide format printing services, and we gained twenty new repeat clients, which helped bring us record sales in May. “It was really nice to see the business community come together and our hard work come back around to help us thrive even during this time.” Ostendorf was able to grow his business despite the effects of COVID-19 thanks to the wide range of print products his company offers. “We are producing a lot of large format printing, signage, and banners right now,” says Ostendorf, “and we also can design, print, and send direct mail marketing campaigns for clients. “Having a diverse client base allows us to be steady. While one of our bigger clients has been closed for two months, we also gained other clients who have been spending more. The customers you relied on might not be there right now, but then you make up for it with new customers.”
