he world we knew before 2021 is no longer the world in which we live. Seismic changes wrought by the pandemic, disinformation on social media, the rise of all kinds of extremism, the clergy abuse scandal, and as this report is written, the first war of aggression in Europe in over 70 years. Though SIGNIS’s mission is unchanged, the field of endeavor has shifted. It calls for not only a new vision of the work, but new ways to resource it. In addition to training sessions for leadership in fundraising, project development and evaluation, the development team conducted its first virtual online event in the US, #mediaforpeace. There is the potential of so many marginated communities, whether in the Amazon, or Nepal or the Congo, to find and share their communal word and thus help heal and enrich our world. SIGNIS will continue to explore how to support that untapped power for good.

Peace and the Lexicon of the media “Being a communicator of the truth is a vocation”, declared Helen Osman, president of SIGNIS, at the SIGNIS Asia 2021 Journalism Seminar, recalling that “Oscar Romero's testimony is powerful… How can journalists be bastions of peace and be a 'voice for the voiceless’?”

Questions were raised from countries as diverse as Japan and Bangladesh, India and Ecuador. It became clear that participants shared the intuition that the truth is at risk and that it is necessary to bring the language of peace into the discourse of the media. During the seven weeks of the seminar, the foundation was built for a community of global journalists who will learn from each other. Their vitality produces the kinds of stories that affirm in other media professionals their vocation to communicate the truth.

The SIGNIS Asia seminar, Journalism in a Fragmented World, held online with 40 professional journalists from 14 countries, sowed hope even as it acknowledged the dangers to freedom of expression.

The Next Generation of Communication Leaders: SIGNIS Talent+

F

or over a decade, SIGNIS has been supporting a new generation of young leaders in communications as they found their voice. The Video Journalist program grew into the Communications Laboratory. In Latin America a corps of young communicators engaged in multiple and distinct actions for peace and the planet. In India a multicultural group of young participants from all these experiences gathered for an intensive semester-long program in “Communication & Compassion,” which among other themes, explored the meaning of Laudato Si’ in an interfaith context. Many of these youthful professionals have gone on to reproduce the media education process they experienced in workshops and projects they do locally. Others have gone on to work in the media industry, bringing their values to the marketplace. This nascent movement of young communicators we for now call “SIGNIS Talent+”

SIGNIS | ANNUAL REPORT 2021

In light of this history, SIGNIS now finds its voice in theirs. Their enthusiasm and commitment illumine the path to the future in a new communications universe. It is their turn to lead.

n 2021, young people from Latin America participated in the online Laudato Si' Ambassadors study program in, called “Spirituality and Pastoral Communication from an Ecological Perspective." The young participants developed different proposals (audiovisuals, podcasts, booklets, Apps, e-books, traveling photographic exhibitions or multimedia websites, among others) focused on the ecological transformation of their communities. These initiatives were founded on the ideals of caring for our common home and integral ecology raised by Pope Francis in Laudato SI' and Querida Amazonia. This program was conducted by the Latin American and Caribbean Catholic Communication Association (SIGNIS ALC), the Association of Catholic Communicators of Venezuela (SIGNIS Venezuela), the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) and the Institute of Theology for Religious (ITER).

Being part of the first group of PREA (Program of Advanced Studies) students in Spirituality and Pastoral Care in Social Communication from an Ecological Perspective has been a very spec ial experience for me. It focused on my passions: communication and care for the environment. Since I was unclear about how to unite and put into practice my interest in these two areas ,I decided to apply to the program in order to learn more about them. I have fond memories of the warm treatmen t we received and the quality of the classes taug ht by the instructors. I also valued the opportuni ty to discover good colleagues and make new friends. With them, I was able to create the "EcoFilm Laudato Sí" project, a proposal for a film festival with an ecological viewpoint. Despite the considerable investment of time

Abrazar un arcoíris, a book from Luis García Orso, S.J., Ecclesiastical Assistant of SIGNIS

“Reaching out to LGBTQ people is an essential ministry for the Catholic church. Why? Because Jesus reached out first to people on the margins, and there are few people in society who are as marginalized as LGBTQ people, and there are no people in the church who are as marginalized as LGBTQ people. Father Garcia Orso (of SIGNIS) is a fellow Jesuit priest and fellow laborer in this new vineyard, and he is trying to do Jesus's work of reaching out. Ministry with LGBTQ people is also an important part of the Society of Jesus's call for Jesuits to "walk with the excluded." I pray that people may listen to Father Orso, and walk with him, as he walks with the excluded”. Rev. James Martin, SJ Editor at Large - America Media

Covid-19 has been a humbling experience—as Pope Francis noted early on, it questions us about what it is we hold dearest. It is with such humility that like other communicators of good will, SIGNIS members learned to adapt, invent, and face a media environment increasingly poisoned by disinformation. Discussion on critical issues continued online—what member of SIGNIS has not become well-versed in the use of Zoom? Perhaps the most ambitious and successful online experience was the 7-week webinar organized by SIGNIS Asia, Journalism in a Fragmented World. Over 40 journalists from 14 countries participated. Meanwhile, in Mombasa, Kenya, the archdiocesan communication office produced programs to offer guidance to families coping with the pandemic. Catholic publications in the US prepared for a COVID shutdown by planning an effective remote system to work in teams. We have only begun to understand how COVID has permanently altered how we communicate, and to take stock of the ingenuity and resourcefulness that in fact enhances human dialogue.

SIGNIS | ANNUAL REPORT 2021

|12

SIGNIS | ANNUAL REPORT 2021

SIGNIS recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, but thanks to its roots in the International Catholic Organization for Cinema (OCIC), created in 1928, SIGNIS effectively has a legacy of more than 90 years in service of cinema. This includes organizing officially recognized juries at international festivals for almost 75 years. CineMag is one of SIGNIS’s most recent online publications. Its theme in 2021 was “Our Common Home.” CineMag focused its gaze on film and nature, on stories that call us to the preserve ecosystems. Reflecting on such crucial values in today’s world facilitates the use of film as an effective tool of evangelization. Among the more than 2,000 films that have received awards by OCIC/SIGNIS, many invite us to visit the larger world we live in. SIGNIS long odyssey with cinema will lead to the discovery of new, diverse voices to appeal to a wider audience for CineMag.

Caribbean, the variety of expressions, the different tonalities

and sotaques (the Brazilian word that describes the different accents that people have) speak with a youthful cadence.

Since January 24, 2022, when the station was officially

inaugurated, around 80 young communicators from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela have taken on a

commitment to make a “mess”, as proposed by Pope Francis at the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

They participated in an intense eight-month production training

program for community and citizen radio promoted by SIGNIS

Latin America and the Caribbean. The young radio broadcasters then gave life to the programming of RadioLío. By listening

to the heartbeat of marginalized communities who live on “the periphery” of society, the young producers provide creative and dynamic programming that seek to achieve the changes that the people want.

SIGNIS Asia and the SIGNIS World Radio Desk sponsored and organized the first International Youth Podcast Competition leading up to the SIGNIS International Radio Encounter to be held in Sri Lanka in May 2022. The podcast competition, open to youth from all over the world, intended to encourage young people to tell their story by submitting a one to three minute podcast based on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Fratelli Tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship. A total of 42 podcasts were received from young people from SIGNIS Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The jury, composed of leaders from SIGNIS Asia, and Radio Desk members from Africa and Latin America, chose the top four finalists. The winners will be awarded a cash prize and the overall first place will have the opportunity to present virtually and share her experience with the participants of the first Radio Encounter. All the podcasts received will be made available on the Vatican Radio and SIGNIS websites.

n important goal of the project is to inform the population about the risks of harmful use of social networks. Bishop Gonsallo says:

It is a space for exchange, where training activities for educational, spiritual, moral and technological development can take place. The project targets all the faithful and people of good will, but we focus on young people as they are essential to impacting others. EXPLAINS ARCHBISHOP ARISTIDE GONSALLO IN A #SIGNISWITHYOULIVE INTERVIEW.

“if young people are more proficient with the digital means, they will be able to improve their daily life in various fields, be it trade or agriculture”. As part of this project, in June, a training in social communication took place: “Witnesses of Christ through the means of social communication”. Twenty-two youth participated in three modules: journalism; digital communication and social media; theoretical principles of interviews, debates and discussions. Many of the participants have already started writing reports on the website of the diocese and debuted on social media. The equipment for the Communications Center has arrived and it is fully operational, ready to respond to the wishes and expectations of the church: a pole of attraction and evangelization of young people by young people, with the production of media products on the Bible, catechesis, the social doctrine of the church and Christian life.

To stand out among the numerous private communication outlets and the media of other religious denominations that broadcast in Porto-Novo, the diocese has shown a strong desire to amplify Catholic communication locally via the Call for Project Ideas launched by SIGNIS Services Rome, presenting a project for a new communications center that supports local youth.

The interns were from Italy and Turkey, each with a broad international background and a keen interest in improving telecommunications systems. One of them, Sofia Papi, summed up her experience: collaborating with SSR “offered me insight into the world of international development, and provided me with new tools and procedures I was not familiar with. It was a great opportunity to improve not only my professional but also interpersonal skills”.
