Twenty years ago, SIH Second Act (formerly Senior Advantage) made its debut as a program for active adults over 50. At the helm was Mona Kerns. It’s with great sadness that on this 20th Anniversary year, we lost our first group leader.

I enjoyed working with her at SIH, through Second Act and through the Arthritis Foundation. She will be missed!” “What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. I am grateful that I got to travel to Kentucky with Mona. Thinking a bus load of Second Act members were at heaven's gate to welcome Mona.” “Mona was really good at whatever she did. Remembering and feeling very blessed to know her. TRIP & CLASS POLICY • Reservations are required for all trips and classes. • Trips require prepaid reservations. Cancellations made to trips after the posted cancellation deadline will not be refunded unless another member can fill the vacancy. • All trips have designated activity levels. Please adhere to the requirements set forth in the policy. • Registered guests of members for all trips, events and classes must be at least 21 years of age.

SPECIAL NEEDS It is the responsibility of the SIH Second Act member to notify the Second Act office at least two weeks prior to the published cancellation deadline for a trip or event (one week prior to the date of an educational program) or upon registration, whichever date is earlier, if he/she has a need which requires special accommodations in order to participate. Following an appropriate notification, all reasonable efforts will be made by the Second Act department manager to accommodate those special needs.

Physicians providing services at and admitting patients to Herrin Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital are not employees of the hospital. Physicians exercise their own independent judgment regarding medical care and treatment and the hospital is not responsible for their actions.

Cancellation Deadline Thursday, March 19 Let's head out west to the base of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Springs. We’ll explore historic Manitou Springs, home to America's Mountain, Pikes Peak. Enjoy a visit to the Royal Gorge and ride across on the Aerial Tram. Explore the magnificent red sandstone, Garden of the Gods. In addition, plan to tour the US Air Force Academy and the US Olympic Training Hall of Fame.

Let's dive into hand/wrist pain. What could be the cause of pain, how can it be treated and how can you prevent further damage? Arthritis can affect any joint, but it is especially painful in your hands. However, it may not be the only cause of pain.

What would you do if confronted with a friend or family member bleeding uncontrollably? This program teaches you how to control life-threatening bleeding through a lecture and simulated, hands-on practice. Learn how to recognize and control bleeding with direct pressure and wound packing through use of various techniques.

Sleep hygiene is a behavioral and environmental practice developed in the late 70s. Taking steps to make sure your body is physically and mentally ready for bed helps for a sound sleep. Sound sleep leads to improved mood alertness and performance. Evaluate your sleep routine in this class.

Repeat Class Back by Popular Demand! Did you miss this class in September? Well, we brought it back! Poor balance is one of the major risk factors for falls. Take measures to reduce not only the odds of falling but the odds of sustaining fall-related injuries. Review information regarding falls/balance deficits. Participate in an interactive portion where participants complete balance assessments.

Make up class If you or someone you know is a veteran, join us as we talk through the different benefits administered through the Veterans Administration. Includes discussion about financial benefits, in-home care, and specialty services like vision, brain & spinal injury, and female health.

Learn how to build an effective relationship with your doctor, solve problems, explore an exercise routine, to communicate your condition with friends and family, eating tips to help you feel better, to manage your medications, to set and achieve goals, and to deal with pain, frustration, isolation and lack of energy.

For anyone living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. Caregivers welcome.
