T
hroughout this issue, you will see a symbol called a QR Code.
What does QR mean? QR stands for: Quick Response. How do I scan a QR Code? First your smartphone needs an app to scan the QR code. Our staff’s favorite is an app named “i-nigma”. To get a free “i-nigma” app, go to Apple iTunes App Store or the Android Google Play Store and search for the app “i-nigma”. When it comes up, just install it on your smartphone. How do I use the “i-nigma” app to scan the QR Code? Tap the app and it opens up the scanner’s camera function. Place the QR Code in the middle of the view box on your smartphone and hold it steady. In about 5 to 10 seconds, you’ll hear a ding! Your web browser will open directly on the indicated video, link, etc. What happens next? Touch the “go to website” button and in a few seconds your smartphone will show you a video or a mobile page – and within seconds, you’ll enjoy your extended video or mobile site experience!
By scanning the QR code with your smartphone, you’ll quickly get to the source of more information
How QR Codes are used in this issue of The CowetaFayette Guide, 2014! In the Dining section of this issue, the City Café and Bakery has a QR Code placed within their ad. When scanned, the code will take you directly to a video with owners Doreen and Yorg Schatte introducing a tour of their facility. Experience the sights and the sounds!

oweta and Fayette counties have always been home to high-caliber talent and entertainment. Premier amphitheaters draw internationally acclaimed acts and local venues feature the incredible talents of our own highly skilled dancers, singers and actors. Recently, there’s been a new entertainment energy moving into the area, and the Guide to Coweta & Fayette County has been updating residents and visitors about it over the past five years. These exciting changes have not only enhanced our cultural and artistic scenery, they also continue to impact the landscapes of the local business, real estate and education communities. Just about everyone knows that Senoia and Coweta County is home to survivors of a zombie apocalypse, and, of course, zombies. It’s all part of the town of Senoia’s alternate identity of Woodbury, home to AMC’s “The Walking Dead” series. The horror drama has been airing since 2010, and was just renewed for a fifth season. “The Walking Dead” is more than just popular—it’s the most watched drama in basic cable history and the number one show among the adult age group 18-49. The mid-season premiere on February 9, 2014 out-performed the Sochi Winter Olympics among 18-49 year olds. The Talking Dead aftershow, hosted by Chris Hardwick, aired right after the Walking Dead premiere and drew a record 5.9 million total viewers. For many of the millions of Walking Dead fans, a visit to Senoia is a must. People come from all across the country and all around the world to walk on the streets of Woodbury. Visitors can find Walking Dead memorabilia throughout Senoia, and official merchandise at the Woodbury Shoppe on Main Street. They can even book a zombie tour. In fact, there are two zombie tours offered 10
the coweta-fayette guide 2014
by Atlanta Movie Tours that guide visitors to sets of “The Walking Dead” and the zombie comedy “Zombieland,” as well as other film sites. “The Walking Dead” isn’t the only TV show shot locally. The Lifetime hit “Drop Dead Diva,” starring Brooke Elliott, Margaret Cho and Jackson Hurst, films in Peachtree City. The show centers around a thin, selfcentered model who dies prematurely. Her soul returns to Earth in the body of a plus-size, loving and hard-working lawyer. It debuted in 2009 and Season 6 is set to premiere this March. Two studio complexes bring film crews to the area. Raleigh Studios—Atlanta, formerly known as Riverwood Studios, has four sound stages and offers a full range of production services. Its location in Senoia also gives it easy access to the town’s Main Street, which welcomes filmmakers, as well as the Gin Property, a community of residences built to be used as a back lot for the studio. Pinewood Atlanta Studio’s recent move into Fayette County adds five cutting-edge sound stages, in addition to the many support businesses that are springing up. All of this continues to make the area more and more attractive to the entertainment industry.
CAMERA READY COMMUNITIES OF GEORGIA
What’s drawing all this activity into Coweta and Fayette counties? Well, first and foremost, you can thank the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). Their incentive program targeting the entertainment industry—film, TV, music, gaming, and digital media—includes a 30% tax credit that makes

the state very appealing. The mild climate, variety of landscapes, and friendly business community also help. Georgia’s Camera Ready Communities program smooths the way for TV and film production companies by connecting them with skilled county liaisons who provide local expertise and support. Coweta County was one of the original 16 Georgia counties to achieve the Camera Ready designation and Fayette County was not far behind “As Coweta County’s Camera Ready liaison, I’m the point of contact for production companies interested in filming in the county,” says Tray Baggarly, director of Event Services for Coweta County. “I help with general information, finding
locations, permitting, pointing them in the right direction and getting them in touch with the people they need to talk to locally. My job is to make it easy for them and having one point of contact helps do just that.” Fayette County is also a Camera Ready Community. “Our goal is to position Fayette County as the epicenter for film in Georgia and being ‘Camera Ready’ is just a basic step down that path,” says Matt Forshee, President of the Fayette County Development Authority (FCDA). Forshee also serves as Fayette County’s Camera Ready Liaison and has recently created a marketing effort focused on film companies called FilmFayette. “Being ‘Camera Ready’ means your community is ready to assist
when productions come calling. Through FilmFayette, we intend to be proactive in showcasing that Fayette has all the assets necessary, from studios to film businesses and crew to locations and educational opportunities.” The Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau has the Southern Hollywood Film Tour that departs from the Convention and Visitors Bureau that visit sites where the scenes were shot in Peachtree City and Senoia. Even the Atlanta Regional Airport (formerly Falcon Field) rolls out the red carpet for the film makers and the actor’s corporate jets by providing transportation to local hotels, and other venues.

estled on nearly 500 acres in the farmlands of Fayetteville, Georgia, Camp Southern Ground, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is the passion-project of GRAMMY Award winning artist Zac Brown. Its mission is “to operate a camp to allow children to overcome academic, social and emotional difficulties so they may reach their full potential and to provide the tools necessary to achieve excellence in all facets of their lives.”
16

nspired by his own experience as a camp counselor, Zac’s vision is to create a state-of-the-art facility that will serve children ages 7-17 with both typical and special needs. It will be a place for children and their families to learn healthy life skills through an advance program involving superior nutrition, physical exercise, and the latest practices in therapy-all administered by a knowledgeable staff. Zac has long recognized the necessity for every child to have access to the best resources to grow and succeed. Camp Southern Ground will have activities to challenge, educate and inspire children with diverse abilities, and from all socioeconomic backgrounds, races and religions.
Among the many traditional camp activities that will foster youth development and create teachable moments for campers, plans are in place to align certain elements of the facility with the latest innovative therapies and technology for those children affected by neurobehavioral disorders. In particular, Asperger syndrome, Tourette syndrome and autism spectrum disorders, as well as learning differences such as ADD/ADHD and dyslexia. The target date for opening Camp Southern Ground, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is 2016. Everyone is welcome to help get the camp up and running. VISUAL ARTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE
O
n Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan, the Centre for the Performing & Visual Arts brings a high level of culture from around the world right into our own backyard. Most residents and visitors come to the Centre to enjoy the outstanding plays, dance troupes, and concerts. Upcoming highlights include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the national tour production of “Driving Miss Daisy,” and a selection of works by Andy Warhol. What many people may not know is that several internationally known painters and sculptors are represented at the Centre. After a major art show in 2006, world-renowned artist Bruno Zupan donated a watercolor, “Venice: View from Guidecca,” to start the Centre’s collection. Françoise Gilot, a noted French artist, displays her ground-breaking monotype at the Centre as well. Two of Gilot’s rare “floating paintings” hang in the lobby of the Centre—“The Seed,” which she gifted to the Centre, and “Premonition” which was purchased by Centre patrons. While all of the artists whose work graces the Centre are world-class talents, a surprising number of them live in the Coweta and Fayette county area. Anne Berry, nationally acclaimed fine art photographer, focuses on animals “to get people to truly look at them, to hear their inner sound and to consider their value and their place in the world.” The Centre will exhibit her work January 2015. David Boyd Jr specializes in Southern Impressionism, and uses his plein air work as ways to capture feelings. His subjects include cars, trucks and tractors, which incite a strong nostalgia in him. Marc Chatov, who lives in north Atlanta, was born 20

into a family of artists. He uses his love of color and a strong knowledge of drawing and anatomy to produce compelling portraits. Carol Harless is a nationally recognized sculptor who captures moments of excellence in bronze. Her sculpture “Eight Measures Away,” based on South Korean violinist Chee-Yun, is one of the Centre’s jewels. Georgie Dunn splits her time between teaching fine art at East Coweta High School and producing a range of highly imaginative art for the commercial market. Millie Gosch uses a limited palette of primary colors, and says she expresses her love of nature in her plein air oil paintings. “My favorite subjects are big open fields, sunrises, sunsets, trees, the lowcountry, and the

ucked away in a quiet corner of Tyrone, all 4,000 square feet of GrünHaus Studio is alive with creativity and imagination. Two artists, Vikki Weigel and Helena Marette, fill the open spaces with beautiful contemporary artwork that is created on-site. Weigel is an intuitive painter and mixed media artist whose work is vibrant with color and whimsy. Her award-winning work is sold and collected throughout the US, Japan and Germany, and is licensed with Paragon, a national art distributor. In 2002, she was the first commissioned Featured Artist for the Stone Mountain Yellow Daisy Festival. Marette creates fine art jewelry as well as delightful felted creations. 22

She exhibits her work in galleries and juried shows in Georgia and has demonstrated her hand-felting techniques on the HGTV show “Crafters Coast to Coast.” Helena’s artwork is published in Candie Cooper’s Felted Jewelry released by Lark Books. Weigel and Marette design and create art and decor for wholesale and retail markets as well as on site sales at the studio. wice a year, in spring and fall, everyone is invited to amble along downtown Newnan and enjoy the beautiful scenery, and we’re not just talking about the landscaping and architectural delights. Local artists display their works at various downtown locations, and are on hand to discuss their techniques. Everything from oil painting and photography to jewelry-making and pottery is featured. Of course, visitors are encouraged to purchase whatever treasures they find. The 2014 Spring Art Walk will be held on Friday, March 21, from 5 to 9pm, and the Fall Art Walk on Friday, September 19, 5 to 9pm. Arts & Leisure FAYETTE COUNTY ARTISTS OPEN THEIR DOORS FOR FIRST ART STUDIO TOUR
Wooden Bowl by Daryl Rickard, woodturner
Stained Glass piece by Cathy Spitz
Welcome to the art studio tour!
n November 2013, ten Fayette County artists invited the public into their studios in Fayetteville, Tyrone and Peachtree City for the first annual Art Studio Tour. The artists demonstrated their talents in a variety of art media that included wood, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, acrylics and mixed media. The artists welcomed their guests with food— everything from hot soup and cider to dips and desserts. The self-guided tour ran for the entire day, and only cost $5 for a wristband that gave access to all nine studios. Visitors not only got a rare chance to see what goes on behind the scenes in the studios, they
also were able to purchase some of the artists’ masterpieces, for gifts and for themselves. More than a few people were inspired and signed up for classes and workshops. Andrea Faye Boswell gathered a select group of her artist friends to participate in the first studio tour. This year, the 2014 Art Studio Tour is scheduled as a two-day event— Saturday, Nov 15 from 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, Nov 16 from12noon to 5pm. Boswell reported that, currently, all the art studios from the 2013 tour will be returning. She hopes to attract new artists with mediums such as painting, photography, mosaics, etc. “Every artist had a very positive
experience and was surprised that so many people attended,” Boswell stated. “The artists and attending guests requested that the tour last for two days. We’re happy to oblige.” The 2013 Art Studio Tour featured: •Vikki Weigel & Helena Marette of GrünHaus Studio, acrylics, jewelry and felted wool •Andrea Faye Boswell, pottery •Daryl Rickard, woodturning •Denise Prince, weaving •Hanley Lewis, woodturning •Janet McGregor Dunn, pottery •Kathy Schultz, fiber arts •Cathy Spitz, stained glass •Gail Jensen of Studio GG, fused glass

ometimes, residents think they need to hit the highway to find quality entertainment. They couldn’t be more wrong! In fact, some of the area’s best concerts and plays are performed right here in Fayette and Coweta counties. The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater—also known as The Fred—is easily accessible in Peachtree City. The open-air amphitheater has over 2,500 seats, including lawn seating, a picnic area and a Gold Section right in front of the stage. The seats fill up fast for the many exciting acts The Fred brings in. On May 10, the Fred will present Lisa Kelly, former soprano with Celtic Woman and a resident of Peachtree

City, in “The Voice of Ireland.” Later in the year, a great line-up is planned to celebrate this summer being the 20th anniversary of the Fred’s popular Summer Concert Series. Fayetteville’s Southern Ground Amphitheater brings good times for the whole family by hosting town events and big names acts. This year, those names include Kansas, Jefferson Starship, Temptations, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap and the Charlie Daniels Band. According to Brian Wismer, Director of Community Development at Main Street Fayetteville and Southern Ground Amphitheater, Southern Ground has been receiving a lot of interest from other promoters,
so everyone should watch for some additional concerts outside of the series this year. Top-rated professional actors grace the stage of The Legacy Theatre in Tyrone. The 2014 season includes the popular classics “Music Man” and “Chicago” on the main stage, and “The Adventures of Brer Rabbit” in its Children Series. The Legacy also offers classes and camps for aspiring performers. Newnan Theatre Company (NTC) provides quality live entertainment in downtown Newnan with a full season of highly rated shows, as well an improvisational comedy group (NITWITS), special events and theatre camps for children.

Also in Newnan, the Centre for Performing & Visual Arts brings in some of the country’s premier dance troupes, theater productions and concerts. Since it’s affiliated with Coweta County schools, students can take advantage of master classes, actually taught by the masters, and also use the stage to present their own performances. And that brings us to the schools. Fayette and Coweta county schools have superb art, music and theater departments; they regularly put on shows that wow the community. Music and dance are all around us here! Tony Byrd and Neal Wauchope are regulars at the Georgia Shrimp Co. in Peachtree City, where smooth jazz is a main feature. Fayette Fiddlers is a group of young violinists who perform around the area. Centre Strings, Masterworks Chorale and Masterworks Youth Chorale all have a home at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan. There are many highly rated dance academies throughout the area that feature professionally trained instructors. Ballet, tap, ballroom—whatever beat you want to move to—they’re all here. Some of the local fitness centers also offer classes in a variety of dance moves.

hroughout the year, there are parades, festivals, fairs and other events that draw crowds and bring smiles to the whole family. Springtime is the time for kings, queens, knights and knaves to entertain visitors at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. Located in Fairburn, the festival is open Saturdays and Sunday from April 19 to June 8, as well as Memorial Day. The Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center hosts one of the biggest annual events in the area—the Coweta County Kiwanis Fair. This year, the fair is open September 19 to 28. There’s always something going on at the fairgrounds, at its 6,000 square foot conference center, agriculture and nature center, horse arena, outdoor theater and midway. Another must attend event is the Great Georgia Air Show held each year at Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Airport. Held October 11 and 12 in 2014, the air show has family fun and spectacular aviation demonstrations that will thrill everyone!

Fayetteville and Newnan are both Main Street towns. Throughout the year, they offer events that bring together their residents and spotlight the best that their cities have to offer. Some of the most popular are the Taste of Newnan, held twice a year, and the Fayette Fine Art Show at the Old Courthouse Square in Fayetteville; this year, the art show is scheduled for May 17 and 18.

ne of the best things about Fayette and Coweta counties is how easy it is to enjoy the great outdoors. Championship golf courses and tennis courts are here, as well as fantastic swimming pools and sports fields. The Recreation and Special Events Department of Peachtree City has a lot of ground to cover, and it does so beautifully. For starters, the department manages the city’s 90+ miles of multi-use paths that invite residents and visitors to walk, run and cycle. There are also year-round pools, picnic areas, paths, boat ramps, a skateboard ramp and a BMX track. Throughout the year, the Recreation Department offers residents a full-range of classes, athletics, aquatics and special
events at the city’s many recreational facilities. Summer camps for kids fill up fast, and with good reason. There are a lot to choose from, like basketball, swimming and volleyball sports camps and Spanish, Lego, theater and Color Guard creative camps. There’s a new level of cooperation in sports venues in Fayette County. Organized by the Peachtree City Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Peachtree-Fayette Sports Alliance (PFSA) brings together representatives from Peachtree City, Tyrone and unincorporated Fayette County. Their goal is to work together to maximize the use of the county’s sports facilities and attract larger sporting events. In Coweta County, the Recreation Department manages parks, pools, community centers and sports fields throughout the county. The Hunter Complex in Sharpsburg and Temple

Avenue Complex in Newnan feature sports fields and tennis courts. Coweta County residents have a full roster of recreation opportunities, too. here are a lot of reasons to get active. When you “take steps” and walk or run regularly, you strengthen your heart and bones, keep your weight down, tone your muscles, improve your mood, sharpen your mind and increase your energy. That’s a lot of benefits! If you have a competitive streak, check out the scheduled races in the area. You’ll find out that, in many cases, walking and running do double duty. You’ll reap the health rewards while worthwhile organizations collect donations from sponsors. Those charitable gifts help groups that provide health and support services, like the Alzheimer’s Association and March of Dimes. So you could say that walking and running improve the wellness of your 32

whole community! The mild climate, protected green space and path system attract active people to the area, and encourage others to become active. Groups have sprung up to help people keep going, stay fit and improve their skills. The Peachtree City Running Club (PTCRC) was started in 1981 and has grown to become the second largest running club in the metro Atlanta area. Members of all ages and from all walks of life meet to support each other as they run along the paths of Peachtree City. The club is involved with the annual Peachtree City Classic 5K/15K and Peachtree City Marathon Relay, monthly Club Grand Prix races, as well as the Peachtree City Rotary Club Elementary Grand Prix Race Series and Summer Track
Series. Intense runners who want to push their endurance levels and hone their skills have been known to cross over to the “dark side”—Darkside Running Club, that is. Since 2002, the Darkside Running Club has been finding new and creative ways to expand the running horizons of its members—ways like the Running Dead Ultra 50/50 in Senoia, the annual Darkside 8-Hour Run in Moreland and the annual Peachtree City 50K and 25K. Darkside Club members include race founders and directors, running club presidents and founders, fast and slow veteran runners and ultramarathoners, as well as novice runners. The members encourage and push one another to their limits, and that keeps the sport fresh and exciting for everyone. Women looking for a free running club designed to support and motivate them find it in Moms RUN This Town (MRTT). The club is open to all women, not just mothers, who have a passion for staying fit and healthy. Local chapters meet throughout Fayette and Coweta counties. Athletes who like to add variety to their challenges are invited to join the triathlons in Peachtree City and Newnan. Racers run on land, swim in lakes and pedal on bicycles for a well-rounded workout and intense

Series was developed in partnership between PTCRC and the Peachtree City Rotary Club. The series not only addresses childhood obesity by introducing Peachtree City and Fayette County elementary school students and their families to the sport of running, it also raises money for their schools. Since the Elementary Grand Prix races began, in 2005, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by the participants for the schools, but the greatest impact is on the individuals who participate and become life-long runners.
Physicians in the Emory network range from primary to specialty care providers. As part of its commitment to providing patients and families with better, more collaborative care for all of their medical needs, Emory Healthcare has a team of researchers discovering what’s next in medicine. Their physicians and care teams put that research to use to improve the health of the community today. about their wide range of obstetrical and gynecological services that includes annual exams, biopsies, genetic counseling and surgeries. “Our physicians specialize in ‘single site’ laparoscopic hysterectomies,” states Michele Brandt, Practice Administrator at The Women’s Specialists of Fayette. “One small incision is created in the navel.” She explains that some of the benefits of single site hysterectomies are that the outpatient procedure is less expensive, has a faster recovery time and leaves no scarring. Obstetrical services at The Women’s Specialists of Fayette include care for high-risk pregnancies (including multiples), advanced maternal age and coexisting medical conditions. Patients can also take advantage of 3D/4D ultrasounds to determine babies’ genders and fetal photos. “We have no mid-level providers, so our patients are guaranteed the services of our Board Certified or Board Eligible providers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Brandt says.

Retirement certainly doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do! Coweta and Fayette counties cater to seniors with services designed to help them stay active, healthy and involved. Coweta County has four senior centers, two in Newnan, one in Senoia and another in Sargent. They offer activities like arts and crafts, informative speakers and musical entertainment. For folks who enjoy games, there’s Bridge, Bunco and Bingo, to name a few. And seniors can even take advantage of blood pressure checks at the centers. Twice a year, Coweta County Senior Services holds annual events—a Spring Cookout and Christmas Luncheon—at the Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center on Pine Road. A Meal on Wheels program is also available for homebound seniors. Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services (FSS) has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults. The social services FSS provides are intended to help seniors maintain their independence. Available services include Meals on Wheels, adult day care referral, information & assistance, in-home personal care, homemaker services Continued on page 41 42

ayette and Coweta county schools are dedicated to the success of their students. With that in mind, new programs are being developed and present education systems are being improved to help students excel in the present and future economy. The film and television industries are booming in Fayette and Coweta counties, thanks to Pinewood Atlanta and Raleigh Studios–Atlanta. More and more jobs are becoming available, and the big question is whether there will be enough trained professionals to fill those jobs. Schools and universities in the Coweta and Fayette region are all ready with the answer.
CEC’s Broadcast Video Program
Central Education Center (CEC) in Newnan has remained focused on its original and current mission—to ensure a viable 21st century workforce. Among classes and programs that CEC continues to develop is its Broadcast Video program. The program is taught by an Emmy Silver Circle inductee and now produces weekly local cable TV programming for the community in its partnership with NuLink. 46
the coweta-fayette guide 2014
The Broadcast Video program produces high school students who are being hired as professionals in the industry. Last year, two CEC Broadcast Video students became the first high school students in the southeast to receive awards from the Emmy organization for community cable TV they had created, developed, produced, edited and aired, while high school students. Recently, CEC was re-affirmed as Georgia’s model Charter College and Career Academy when it was named as Lt. Governor Cagle’s inaugural “College and Career Academy of the Year.” There are now 30 such schools either developing or opened across Georgia, and CEC was the first. CEC is always working to develop even more robust internship and apprenticeship opportunities
for its students, including those in Broadcast Video. Last year, 380 students benefitted from intern and apprentice opportunities provided by 225 employers in the area.

She explains that Clayton State began with a few select courses including Voice Over Certificate and Film & TV Audition workshops. Then last fall, the University offered a Film Studies minor, open to any student pursuing a major. Since then, the pace has picked up. “This year, Clayton State formed a partnership with ToonBoom Animation, out of Canada, and Fayette County Schools to develop a program that will create a new career pathway in animation—a program that will become the state model,” Winkler says. Bento Box, a leading producer of primetime animation, including Bob’s Burgers (seen on FOX), uses ToonBoom software for their projects and has also become a business partner for this pilot program. The big news is that Clayton State University now offers a two-part CE (as opposed to academic program) Digital Film Technician program that introduces students to the production of digital media and film. Digital Film Tech Training I is designed for students with no background in digital media, as well as those students with some experience or coursework in the field. Digital Film Tech II is a follow-up course. Winkler reports that the spring classes are already at max capacity…over 80 students have enrolled. But, no fear, the next series of classes will begin in June. How all this came to be is a serendipitous chain of events. Winkler had just completed a two-year appointment on a commission formed by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) to address developing a trained workforce for the film and entertainment industry coming into Georgia. About that time, Bob Vazquez, president of the film union, IATSE Local 479 (International

MEET BARTON BOND
T
he Digital Film Technician Certificate program at Clayton State University is a great way for students and residents to take their first steps into the film industry, and the trailblazer who’s leading the way is Barton Bond. Bond heard from 12 different states and countries asking for his help in developing a Digital Film Technician program. He chose to come to Georgia, explaining, “The picture at Clayton State is that enlightened, forward thinking is likely to make Clayton State a leader, if not the leader in the country, in the type of training we are doing.” The Digital Film Technician program that Bond developed in New Mexico was created in response to a pressing need for qualified crew members to staff the numerous Hollywood-based films being shot there. A unique part of his New Mexico coursework was the opportunity for students to work on actual productions. “The students got to work on productions all the way to full blown feature films. After five years, there was not a single piece shot in New Mexico that hadn’t hired some of our students,” he reports. “Our biggest success was `Breaking Bad.’ In its last season, we counted 40 percent of the below line crew were our former or current students.” Photo: Courtesy of The Bedford School

usiness opportunities have always been abundant in Fayette and Coweta counties, but even more are on the horizon as more film and TV industries move into the area. The Gin Property, a neighborhood built in Senoia’s historical district, not only features beautiful homes (and the 2010 and 2011 Southern Living Idea House), it’s also designed for use as a back lot. The Senoia studio and the entire region has been going strong with the immensely popular TV series “The
Walking Dead,” now renewed for its fifth season. Main Street shops and restaurants cater to the many fans of the show that make the pilgrimage to visit the site of Woodbury. Pinewood Atlanta Studios’ move into Fayette County is once again lighting up the stage for business. Studios make their money from drawing in film production companies

to use their sound stages, and Pinewood Atlanta Studio’s sound stages are world-class. This means opportunity— for jobs, businesses, education, and real estate. Trained professionals are in demand, and that’s bringing jobs for current residents, as well as new residents. Schools are offering programs to train students for the new job market. People moving to Fayette County are clamoring for more housing options. And businesses are poised and ready to support the needs of the studio and the production companies coming in to use it. In a release by Pinewood Shepperton plc, CEO Ivan Dunleavy stated: “The support this project has received from the business community, government and local residents has been overwhelming and we want to return the favor. We believe Pinewood Atlanta Studios will help deliver strong growth not only for our company but for the 54

local community.” The multi-million dollar film studio complex is already having a big impact on the county’s present and future growth. Just how big? Massive! Consider this— Pinewood’s UK location is served and supported by 300 separate businesses, all critical to film production. This growth opportunity is bringing in bright people ready to take advantage of the opportunities. Businesses are opening and expanding as they help serve Pinewood Atlanta Studios. Over 25 businesses are now located in the Pinewood Production Centre, all specific to the film and video industry. New Life Casting, an internet-based company that recruits extras, has its first brick-andmortar location there. FutureStaff has opened its third office at the Production Centre to assist film vendors with employment needs, both temporary and direct hire.

P
inewood Shepperton plc, based in the UK, has been involved with blockbusters like the Harry Potter and James Bond films. The company already has branches located in Canada, Germany, Malaysia and the Dominican Republic, and had been looking to establish a US studio for about 10 years. Pinewood settled on Fayette County and there’s a prosperous ripple running through the entire region. A dynamic group of individuals and organizations was responsible for closing the deal, a group that includes the Fayette County Development Authority (FCDA) and Rivers Rock LLC. An independently managed family trust of the Cathy family, Rivers Rock LLC represents a group of local
investors. The cost of the land and studio construction was fully funded by equity from Rivers Rock LLC and a debt facility from Synovus Bank. The key organizations that ultimately became the master developers for Pinewood are ProMaker Development Group, a consulting firm that specializes in marketing, business development and real estate, and Group VI, a full-service real estate and construction firm based in Peachtree City. It started when Matt Forshee, FCDA President/ CEO, was at a planned lunch with a Pinewood executive Nick Smith discussing a location near Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Airport-Falcon Field. When Nick stated emphatically that the studio would never consider building by an airport, Forshee did some quick thinking. He took the Pinewood executives, along with ProMaker executives Len Gough and Rick Halbert, to an expanse of 288 acres in Fayette County near Sandy Creek Road— and that’s when things began to click.

ank of North Georgia celebrated Synovus’ 125th Anniversary by partnering with Action Ministries to Feed the Hungry. In celebration of Synovus Bank’s 125th anniversary, Bank of North Georgia, a division of Synovus Bank, partnered with Action Ministries in support of the nonprofit’s Feed the Hungry Food Box program. In October and November 2013, customers and supporters visited any of the 41 Bank of North Georgia locations and donated $5 for a food box that would feed a family for up to five days. Their goal was to raise $25,000 to purchase 5,000 boxes of food in partnership with Action Ministries, whose relationship with Publix Super Markets makes it possible to purchase a box containing $30 worth of groceries for only $5. In the end, Bank of North Georgia exceeded their goal and raised more than $28,000 and purchased 5,600 boxes of food, which provided more than 100,000 meals to Georgia families in need! “At Bank of North Georgia, we

don’t just work in the communities we serve, we strive to be active participants,” said Rob Garcia, President and Chief Executive Officer, of Bank of North Georgia. “We chose Action Ministries because they are a 50-year-old, wellrespected nonprofit with an excellent track record of success,” continued Garcia. “Last year alone, they served nearly 65,000 individuals in need across North Georgia, but the need is much greater. Their service footprint mimics ours perfectly, so it’s a great fit.” Each of the 41 branches, including the branches in Coweta and Fayette counties, were asked to raise enough money to sponsor 125 boxes of food. Some branches went above and beyond and exceeded those goals tremendously, by sponsoring more than 400 boxes. Also, some of the branches partnered with local food pantries and churches in their communities while others had Action Ministries distribute the food boxes to its partners as needed.

The impromptu change brought in a world-class studio—and earned the Georgia 2013 Deal of the Year Award for Pinewood Atlanta Studios and the FCDA. In October 2013, the FCDA and Pinewood Atlanta were presented with the 2013 Deal of the Year Award in the Large Community Category. The award was bestowed by the Georgia Economic Developers Association (GEDA), and was presented by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. Accepting the award was Brian Cooper, VP Operations for Pinewood Atlanta Studios, as well as representatives from the FCDA, Fayette County Board of Commissioners, City of Fayetteville and Group VI. Speaking for the FCDA, President/CEO Matt Forshee said, “This is an incredible honor for Fayette County and for the entire team that is responsible for the location and development of Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County. Thanks to Pinewood for making Fayette County the epicenter for film in Georgia. The way our local governments of Fayette County and the City of Fayetteville have worked to move this project forward in lock step with Pinewood is nothing short of amazing.” Forshee was quick to point out, “This project would not have happened without the leadership of Jim Pace with the Group VI Company and Len Gough and Rick Halbert with ProMaker Development Group. They invested two years of sweat equity to bring the project to fruition.”

Business GEORGIA’S INCENTIVES AT WORK
T
here’s no doubt what’s fueled all this activity—Georgia has incentives that draw in the studios and production companies. In 2008, the Georgia Legislature enacted incentives that provide up to 30% of Georgia production expenditures in transferable tax credits. The Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act applies to qualifying projects that includes feature films, television series, commercials, music videos, animation and game development. Barton Bond, designer of Clayton State University CE’s Digital Film Technician Certificate program, was actively involved in the film industry’s growth in New Mexico before moving to Georgia. He says that although New Mexico was the first state to
S
have a loan package as part of its incentive package to attract films from Hollywood, Georgia’s present involvement in the film industry already surpasses New Mexico’s. “I’m regularly taken aback by how many parallels there are between New Mexico and Georgia,” Bond adds. “But I sincerely believe Georgia is ahead of New Mexico in several aspects of its growth in the film and media industry. “The film industry follows the dollar. There’s no two ways about it, Georgia is way ahead in terms of infrastructure for the film industry. Other states have had plans, but they haven’t done anything. Georgia is well-positioned to be a leader in the development of infotainment world, including feature films, TV, cable, all internet, gaming, the use of digital media for training, medically-related and industrial-related training projects.”
ABOUT FAACE
ome creative people might think that the business side of the arts is daunting, but inventive thinking is just what’s needed to get a handle on it. About three years ago, a group of artists got together to focus on the financial and marketing aspects of their art. They formed FAACE—Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs. “Our focus is to help talented artists reach the audience and the success that they would like to attain,” explains Janet McGregor Dunn, FAACE Artist Chair. “We have over 40 members who support each other.” FAACE is a non-profit group that not only offers workshops on the nuts-and-bolts of business, it also hosts three to four shows a year in the Fayette and Coweta county area. Each show benefits a charitable group in the area. In February, 30 FAACE members exhibited their works—paintings, ceramics, stained glass, woodwork, 58
Georgia ranked as one of the top 5 states for film production in the US. In 2010, more than 50 counties in the State of Georgia hosted a film, TV, or commercial production. In 2013, the State of Georgia saw nearly $3.3 billion of direct economic benefits from film production in the state. The LOCI Economic Impact Model shows the direct revenue potential to the Fayette County government of $10.4M over the first five years of operations, and $37.8M in the time from year six to year fourteen. Note that these are actual revenues from various tax and fee collections. The study further shows that in the first five years, a construction and operations investment expenditure of $149M, would result in a community economic impact of $463M. To date, Phase One investments in year one is closer to $50M and the first film has been stated by Pinewood execs to be in the $150M+ budget range.

During the year of 2013, Keller Williams Realty closed over 4.9 Billion dollars in real estate, making it the #1 real estate organization in Georgia. Robinson and his team at Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Partners in Peachtree City have over 100 years of combined real estate experience. or fans of the “The Walking Dead,”—and there are many millions of them around the country—a visit to the show’s locale, Woodbury, is a must. Residents (the living ones, anyway) know the town as Senoia, but they’re happy to welcome visitors who want to see streets roamed by zombies. Everyone wants to take a piece of the undead action home, and there’s only one place in town that has official “The Walking Dead” merchandise. That’s the official “The Walking Dead” store—Woodbury Shoppe, conveniently located in downtown Senoia. The shop just moved into larger quarters at 48 Main Street. “We have a great deal more square footage and a new basement area,” reports Woodbury Shoppe manager Carrie Cottrill. “Our plan is to turn the basement into a museum and interactive Walking Dead experience. We’re currently waiting on a replica of Daryl Dixon’s bike and many more great surprises.” Cottrill adds that the store aims to be the one-stop shop for all things Walking Dead, and that she hopes to unveil the basement during the store’s open house on March 29. “It’ll be a special occasion with visits from local zombies, prizes, and giveaways,” she promises. “Visit Woodbury Shoppe on Facebook to get the latest info.” Woodbury Shoppe also offers Atlanta Movie Tours tickets for a three-hour tour featuring “The Walking Dead” locations in the Senoia and Coweta County area. quality at our local stores and boutiques, it’s hard not to enjoy shopping! High-end clothing and furniture stores feature all the latest styles. After browsing the stores, you may want a few new sundresses to brighten your wardrobe, but there’s just no room left in your closet. And that oh-so-perfect dining room set is on sale at your favorite upscale furnishings shop…but the one now sitting in your dining room is still in tip-top shape. What you need is a guilt-free way to shop for your home and yourself, a way to buy the latest fashions without being wasteful. That’s easy! In Fayette and Coweta counties, there are plenty of consignment stores and non-profit thrift stores that benefit the community. They can turn your gently used clothing and furnishings into cash, either for you or the community. Be sure to call or check out the sites for details. Each business or organization has specific needs and criteria for what they accept; some have limited hours for donations, while others offer pick-up services.

ne of the greatest rights Americans have and practice is freedom of religion. It’s a freedom that residents of Fayette and Coweta counties find it easy to enjoy with the many places of worship found here. A full range of religions are represented here—Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, Jewish, Greek Orthodox, Islam and Latter Day Saints, to name just a few. There’s also a selection of non-denominational churches, and many church-affiliated schools. Most of the local churches sponsor youth groups to help foster connection with God, Scripture, family and one another. Mission outreaches, for youth and adults, are also important aspects of many churches, allowing them to extend their reach worldwide and serve people at home and around the world. Young Life, by Nicole Coleman Imagine a room of 100 teenagers arm in arm, swaying and shout-singing at the top of their lungs to the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believin.’” Maybe you’re smiling…a little concerned… wondering what decade this describes! Actually, this type of thing happens most any Monday night at a Young Life club in Fayette County. “Founded in 1941, Young Life is a non-denominational Christian ministry committed to making a positive difference … through the friendship and influence of caring adults” (younglife. org). It’s a group of people in our community with hearts to share God with teens. They accomplish that goal through the coordination of the Area Director, the background support of the Committee and the face-to-face relationships formed by the Volunteer Leaders. Leaders meet teenagers where they are to build friendship and trust and to earn the right to share with them the Good News of Jesus Christ. Young Life uses a blend of fun, humor, adventure and Scripture—a formula that has stayed the same since the beginning and yet is completely unique in every area every year. Club is one night … summer camp is one week … but the relationships formed last a lifetime. Fayette County Young Life Area Director, Baker Whitten, invites people with questions or interest in Young Life to contact him at 706-761-2922, or baker@fayettecounty.younglife.org.
