The Dedication of the Founder’s Corner in Peachtree City
L
ocated in the Fountain Plaza in front of the Library and City Hall buildings is a low rock wall that will eventually house plaques celebrating the first 100 years of Peachtree City. Founders’ Corner lies in the northwest corner of the wall and features life-size bronze cast busts of Joel Cowan, Peachtree City’s first mayor and initial developer of the community, and Floy Farr, who played a role in the original land acquisition and was a longtime resident and banker. Also in Founders’ Corner, a white obelisk is set to mark the center point of the original City Hall. The rest of the corner contains plaques describing events before 1959 and the founding of Peachtree City. These include a record of Chief McIntosh, chief of the Creek Indians in this area, and the 8 | the guide to peachtree city | Summer – Fall 2014
rest of the land history prior to the organization of Peachtree City. The area encompassed the original settlements of Clover and Aberdeen, which included early property owners, mills and farms – all predating 1959. The Founders’ Corner Dedication was held on May 4, 2014. A highlight of the dedication ceremony was the unveiling, for the first time, of the bronze busts of Joel Cowen and Floy Farr, two iconic leaders of the planned city located south of Atlanta. Mayor Vanessa Fleisch welcomed the History Timeline Committee and the many civic-minded citizens who funded and organized the project. Scott Bradshaw, a descendent of one of the original landowners, spoke about the early history of the area.

Joel Cowan spoke about the early days, and described how he began acquiring the land needed to develop the unique community of Peachtree City. Amy Leuenberger, President of the Peachtree City Rotary Club, spoke about the Rotary Club’s
sponsorship of the Timeline Committee’s project and how Rotarians Dr. Gordon Fleming and Frances Meaders led the way for the Rotary Club to be major contributor.
About the History Timeline Project The project began in 2009 when Jerry Peterson became interested in a historical timeline for Peachtree City, which had just celebrated its 50 Anniversary. The committee grew to 12 dynamic leaders and input was sought from interested citizens. After sufficient funds were obtained through private donations, the project went forward. Andy Davis, a noted sculptor from McDonough,
Georgia, was commissioned to create the two lifesize bronze busts of Joel Cowan and Floy Farr. With the dedication of Founders’ Corner, it’s hoped that more interested citizens will step forward and contribute to the build-out of the timeline wall and future plaques. Summer Concert Series Celebrating 20 Years! J
une 17, 1994 was a historic night at The Fred. The Summer Concert Series made its debut featuring the 70s rock group Three Dog Night and opened to a sold out audience. Twenty years later, patrons are still pouring into the venue to enjoy music of all genres surrounded by the peaceful canopy of trees and illuminated by the stars in this unique and intimate entertainment venue. Prior to 1994, The Fred was known as The McIntosh Amphitheater and was used primarily for community entertainment, theater and local blue grass shows. Several of the city leaders agreed it was time for a change and, therefore, the concept of producing a summer concert series was born. Most insiders agree that the Fred Brown Amphitheater would not have had such a successful launch had it not been for a lot of work by the then mayor Bob Lenox and Chair of the Development Authority Tom Farr. These key men, their boards and staffs provided the skill and support to produce that first successful concert year in 1994. The city then hired Kristi Rapson as Amphitheater Manager, while the management remained under the Development Authority. In the following years, the management changed a number of times, as did the staff. In 2008, the city regained control of The Fred and hired Nancy Price to manage the facility. In an effort to tighten the belt in a weakened economy, Price was forced to streamline the operations in order to bring the amphitheater back into a strong financial position. The two-night series was condensed into one and the Fred was able to persevere despite the challenges. The Fred is now considered to be 10 | the guide to peachtree city | Summer – Fall 2014
one of the top venues in metro Atlanta and enjoys healthy profitability. The quality and variety of the performers that appear on the stage of the Fred assure us that we will enjoy many more nights of fun in a venue of which we can be proud. One thing is for sure – you, your friends and, in some cases, the whole family will enjoy the Spotlight Concerts. The Fred Amphitheater
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of our Amphitheater in Peachtree City – A Short History – matrilineal system of leadership. It was said that Chief McIntosh was trapped by his own ancestry. He fought for the survival and prosperity of his Indian brothers while, at the same time, he realized the Indians’ inevitable fate as Europeans continued to move into the area. “The McIntosh Trail” was written along the same lines as a popular outdoor drama about Cherokee Indians, “Unto These Hills.” In fact, “Unto These Hills” is still performed in North Carolina, and the writer, Dr. Kermit Hunter, was commissioned to write “The McIntosh Trail.” By February 1978, the McIntosh Trail Arts Complex had run its course and the City of Peachtree City, under the leadership of Mayor Herb Frady and Council Member Jerry Bennett, purchased the land out of foreclosure at a price of $240,368.
The McIntosh Trail Arts Council & “The McIntosh Trail” Outdoor Play While we’re celebrating, it should be pointed out that it all started in 1974 when Robert Price Sr. of Peachtree City gathered support from several local businesses and civic leaders. They met to discuss what their community could do to celebrate America’s upcoming Bicentennial. That meeting ultimately produced the McIntosh Trail Arts Council, established in 1975. The original vision of the McIntosh Trail Arts Council was the development of a beautiful 1,600-seat amphitheater to house an outdoor drama named “The McIntosh Trail.” The drama captured a moment in time from July 2, 1812 through April 29, 1825. It recounted the story of the Creek Indians and Chief McIntosh during the period of history that saw incoming settlers pushing the Indians farther west, prompting many Indians to stay and fight for their homeland. The focus of the play was Chief William McIntosh whose father was Scots-American. His mother was a respected member of the Creek tribe, which uses a 12 | the guide to peachtree city | Summer – Fall 2014
The McIntosh Opry 1978-1984 The following is a summary of an article first published in the Guide to Peachtree City 1996 written by Sallie Satterthwaite, with photos contributed by the Peachtree City Library, Margo Booth and Bob Price. The McIntosh Opry was a modest success for a facility of its kind in a small, developing city south of Atlanta. At that time, there were no four-lane roads connecting Peachtree City to Newnan, Fayetteville or the Interstate. The Opry was more or less a family affair, with a hundred to two hundred people attending the shows. Performers weren’t paid and the operation was run by a steering committee appointed by Mayor Frady. The Chair was Councilwoman Mary Kaurin Moore, and members were Leslee Browne Mitchell, Glen Allen and former Mayor Fred Brown and his wife Nita. Over the six years that the Opry operated, the emcee responsibilities went from Leslee Mitchell to Shirley Ann McPherson and Katy Evans. During that time, the committee also began to add some jazz and big band music to the steady diet of bluegrass and rockabilly performed by local musicians.

1985-1992 The added musical genres helped to bring more people to the shows that were performed in the Opry’s wooden structure with bench style seats. In fact, attendance reached a high of 34,800 by 1988. By 1989, the wooden amphitheater was showing its age. In July of that year, it was partially destroyed by a large fire. The fire forced the city to make a choice regarding the amphitheater – repair or rebuild? Frances Meaders, then City Clerk, recalled that the decision in 1990 was “to level the whole thing to the dirt and start over.” The renovation continued into 1991. In 1992, it was reopened and named “The Fred Brown Amphitheater” in honor of Fred Brown who had been mayor for 10 years during the amphitheater’s early stages. Now you know the rest of the story. If you have any photos, copies of programs or articles about any part of the history of the Peachtree City Amphitheater, please donate them to our library so they can compile a complete history. Publisher’s Note: In preparing this article, I became even more aware
about how important the Fred has been to our city’s history, and that we are blessed to have civic and business leaders who gave their time, thoughts and efforts to bring about things like our amphitheater. Furthermore, even though the original vision of the outdoor play “The McIntosh Tail” did not survive, it did lead to a venue in Peachtree City that is still enjoyed by thousands of citizens and visitors every year. Many thanks to Bob Price, Herb Frady, Floy Farr, Fred Brown, Bob Lenox and Tom Farr, Kristi Rapson and the committee people and staffs who worked behind the scenes to give us this beautiful venue—and to Nancy Price and staff who maintain and improve on the tradition of The Fred Brown Amphitheater.

he “club” was started over 20 years ago. Basically, a group of friends were gathered together for a “tacky” party at a friends house. It was decided at that party that there was nothing that would represent “tacky” better than plastic pink flamingos in the front yard. So, rules were drawn up and it was very clear that if you received the plastic pink flamingos in your yard, then you had to have a party within 30 days. Oh, and the Flamingos had to stay put until you actually had the party! That disturbed my high school children immensely! From there the club grew to 20+ members and became much more than a social club. Over the years this group of friends have become extended family as we have all been there for each other to watch our children grow up, graduations, weddings, and babies born. It has been a wonderful support system for all of us, as well as a lot of fun. We have traveled together, laughed and cried together and formed bonds with life long friends. •

swimming is permitted only in Lake Peachtree. There is limited boating on all the lakes; specific information is available at the Peachtree City website, peachtree-city.org. Golf carts are synonymous with Peachtree City. They’re an economical, environmentally friendly way to travel within the city limits. There are several reliable golf cart dealers in the area, such as Golf Rider on Huddleston Road. Residents need to register their carts and display the current decals; again, more info is at the PTC website. The multi-use paths are great for bicyclists. In addition to the paths, Peachtree City is designating some streets as “bicycle friendly,” and has noted them on the official PTC maps, available for $2.00 at City Hall and the Peachtree City Visitors Center. For cyclists who want to race, there’s the BMX racing track. Several cycling groups meet up and hold social rides in the area. Walkers and runners also enjoy the 90 miles of paths that wind through Peachtree City. The wooded serenity is highlighted in several spots. The Line Creek Nature Area is a 70-acre public preserve with miles of nature trails, a rushing stream and granite outcroppings. It’s open from dawn to dusk, and hikers and dogs on leashes are welcome. Flat Creek Nature Area extends for 513 acres of wetland. A 1,200-foot boardwalk, complete with two viewing platforms, can be reached by the nature trail alongside the Fred Brown Amphitheater. Visitors will revel in the beauty of Piedmont trees and plants, such as chestnut oaks, red maples and turtlehead ferns. A second platform is located beside the cart path south of Crosstown Road. Walk and Talk with Piedmont Docs P
iedmont Fayette Hospital is making it easier to take care of your health by letting you do it one step at a time. “Walk with a Doc” is an opportunity for community members to “walk and talk” with health professionals at specific times and locations. Doctors lead the walks. The program offers participants a casual, enjoyable and personable experience with a health professional. The programs last approximately one hour. Doctors will take five minutes to talk on a health topic of their choice and participants can ask questions freely for the remainder of the sessions, about 40 minutes. It’s a great chance to get answers to your health questions outside of a doctor’s office. Piedmont Fayette Hospital invites all members of the Fayette County community to live better and spend some time with Piedmont doctors. In order to participate, however, each community member must register and sign a waiver either online or at the event. Darlene LaBine, Piedmont Fayette Hospital Volunteer
Piedmont Fayette Hospital (PFH) treasures its volunteers, and Darleen LaBine is a good example of why. She’s been with PFH for the 17 years since it opened. In fact, she participated in the original tours. Last year, the hospital showed its appreciation by presenting her with the 2013 Spirit of Volunteerism Award. Darleen explains that she found her calling many years ago. “I went to visit a family member in the hospital and after that visit, I knew I wanted to work in a hospital. I really enjoy helping people.” Through the years, Darleen has spent time in several departments— ER, ICU, Radiology and the Information Desk. In her current role in the Radiology Department, she greets patients, manages screening forms, files and takes patients back when it’s time for them to be seen by the clinical staff. Darlene adds that sometimes people are in difficult circumstances and she escorts them to the chapel for comfort. “I’ve enjoyed every assignment I’ve had over the years,” she explains. “Volunteering is so worthwhile to me. I see a lot of people on my volunteer days because I’m in a central location in the hospital, and many visitors will stop by my station to ask questions. I love talking to people and helping them when I can.” When asked about her favorite part of being a hospital volunteer, Darleen has a lot of memories. “There have been lots of special moments,” she recounts. “And I’ve met many special people. I remember one young girl in particular who was so grateful for my help that she sent me a card.” Darleen especially loves and appreciates the staff at PFH. She says that she’s gotten to know many of the nurses especially well. “I often tell them that if I get sick, I want them to take care of me. They are awesome!”

Bill Werling began running in 1977. “In 36 years of running, I completed the Peachtree Road Race 35 times and the Boston Marathon three times,” he says. “Not being a fast runner, I never won anything of significance. But volunteering has kept me close to the sport and its thrills.” One of Bill’s most notable volunteering moments was working in the Stadium for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. “Seeing Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis win their gold medals was very exciting,” he remembers. “Knowing that I was part of the team that made the Olympics successful was especially rewarding.” Local runners know Bill from the Peachtree City Classic, where he’s been in charge of parking for the past 25 years, and often calls mile splits for the 15K runners. He handles other important tasks, too, like operating a finish line clock at high school track meets, and organizing and controlling the finish line at local elementary school races. “During the summer, I’m the starter for the races conducted at Riley Field for the Summer Track classic, an event I originated 22 years ago,” he adds.

Virtually every running event needs volunteers. Luckily, it’s something Bill enjoys doing, and feels it’s ‘in his blood.’ He says he enjoys staying at the finish line until the last runners come in. “Cheering them on and watching the enjoyment on their faces makes it all worthwhile,” he says. Bill may claim that he hasn’t any significant racing wins, but in the eyes of Peachtree City runners, he’s a true champion.

Camps Offer Plenty of Summer Fun!

A
t summer camps in Peachtree City, kids can indulge in their favorite pastimes or try new ones. There are camps to hone their sports skills, express their creative spirits or let them explore summertime adventure. Summer Camps are held at both the Kedron and Glenloch facilities. The Glenloch Recreation Center hosts the PTC Summer Adventure Camps. That’s eight weeks of fun for kids aged 6 to 11. Week 1, June 2-6, includes trips to a Braves game and Saville Art Studio. Week 2, June 9-13, features visits to Zoo Atlanta and Chuck E. Cheese. The following weeks are packed with good stuff, too, like Stone Mountain, Wild Animal Safari, Georgia Aquarium, Stage Music Academy, Urban Jungle and even a Chick-fil-A tour. The cost for Summer Adventure Camp for Peachtree City residents is $165 per week per child. Pre- or post- camp care is available for an additional charge. Kedron Recreation Center is where the sports camps meet. This year’s schedule includes several basketball and volleyball camps for children of different ages and skill levels. There’s also an All Sports Fun & Swim Camp for kids ages 5 to 13 who want to do it all! Be sure to check out the creative camps held at Kedron, too. Kids can choose from Spanish Immersion, Creative Artists’ Swimming & Art, Play-well LEGO, Color Guard, Reader’s Theater, Friendship Craze and Acting Craze camps. Revel in PTC’s Recreation Possibilities Swim and Splash The Kedron Aquatic Facility is Peachtree City’s bright blue gem, bringing fun and fitness to the city’s residents all year long. It’s the place where toddlers learn to swim, athletes sharpen their skills and seniors improve their muscle tone. During the summer months (May 24 –August 6) swimmers can also enjoy Glenloch Pool. Pebblepocket Pool is available for private pool parties during the summer on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. SCAT (Southern Crescent Aquatic Team) is a year round USA swimming team open to swimmers of all levels aged 6 to 18 years. Aqua-cise and water aerobics classes, held at Kedron’s small pool, are open to adults, ages 18 and up. The invigorating workouts combines aerobic, strength and flexibility training taught to upbeat music. Kendo Sword Fighting, TaiChi Chuan, Aikido and Dalisay Arnis de Escrima. Kids, in groups for ages 8-to-12 and 13-to-18, improve their hoop skills in Back 2 Basics Basketball. Players are evaluated and helped to develop through drills and the instructors’ insights. Summertime athletics are a great way for residents to get fit while enjoying friendly competition. Some of the popular programs offered by the Recreation and Special Events Department are Summer Adult Softball (men’s and co-ed), Summer Adult Basketball and Fall Adult Volleyball. Don’t miss out on the lacrosse tournaments! The SAT Girls Lacrosse Tournament will be held June 6-8, and the Southern Open Boys Lacrosse Tournament will be June 21-22, both at the Peachtree City Athletic Conference. More Activities and Sports Skills Once you’re out of the water, there’s still a lot to do! The Recreation and Special Events Department offers a lot of choices. The newest classes being introduced this year are film acting and dog training. Soccer Tots, another new class, involves parents as it introduces children as young as 18 months to the basics of soccer through props, songs and games. Swing and sway with dance classes, like clogging, belly dance and ballroom dance for adults and teens. There are fitness classes, too, such as bench aerobics, yoga and zumba. Calendar of Fun One of the best parts about living in Peachtree City is that there’s always something fun to do! Thanks to the Peachtree City Recreation and Special Events Department, residents have a calendar filled with great activities for the whole family. Saturday, June 7 is the start of the 2014 Summer Movie Series with the B98.5 sponsored movie “Frozen.” The film will be shown on a giant 36-foot screen at Drake Field, starting at dark. Drop by! The Peachtree City Family Film Series is free and open to the public. On Saturday, June 7, the 4th Annual Peachtree City Marathon Relay will be held. A joint venture between the PTC Running Club and Tri-PTC, the race invites members and non-members to participate in teams of four. Runners meet at Drake Field and the race goes from 6:30am to 1pm. Kids are invited to the PTC Youth Triathlon on Saturday, June 14, 8-11am, at Glenloch Recreation Center. Kids will compete in running, swimming and biking against others in their age group—Junior Division, ages 6 to 10, and Senior Division, ages 11 to 15. Saturday, June 28 will bring together crowds of fitness enthusiasts at Lake McIntosh for Get Stoked! There’ll be an outdoor lifestyle sports expo, live music, entertainment, fashion, food and demonstrations. Competitions and shows will make it fun for the whole family. Friday, July 4 is a day full of fun and excitement in PTC! The July 4th Parade on Peachtree Parkway begins at 9am. (Registration to participate in the parade begins June 2 for Peachtree City residents and June 9 for Fayette County residents. Also on July 4th, activities continue with the new 4th Fest at City Hall Plaza from 5 to 9pm. Activities include live music, inflatables, games, face painting, caricatures, crazy hair art, a public safety demonstration by the Peachtree City Fire Department and food vendors. Finally, the July 4th fireworks start at dark near the Drake Field area. On Saturday, July 19, the 2014 Summer Movie Series continues with “Rio 2” at Drake Field, starting at dark. Concessions are available at the Peachtree City Family Film Series, but baskets and coolers are welcome. (Please be mindful of local ordinances concerning open containers, glassware, etc.) Saturday, August 2 is the 13th Annual Fayette County Fishing Rodeo, hosted by the Peachtree City Recreation and Special Events Department, Peachtree City Bass Anglers and the Southern Conservation Trust. The free event will be held at Luther Glass Park. Note that registration is required. Participants can register at Kedron Aquatic Center or online at peachtree-city.org/recreation. Saturday, August 2 is also the date for the film “Turbo” in the 2014 Summer Movie Series. Bring the family to Drake Field as it gets dark to enjoy the final movie in the Peachtree City Family Film Series. On Saturday, August 16, Tri-PTC will present the Tri-PTC Triathlon. Participants will run, bike and swim around Lake Peachtree. Lace up your walking shoes on Saturday, August 23 and be part of the 4th Annual Cancer Wellness Walk, 8am-12noon, at Drake Field. The Divas Half Marathon & 5K Series will run from 7:45am to 12noon at the McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex. Sponsored by the PTC CVB and the Peachtree Fayette Sports Alliance, it’s the most fun and glam women’s half marathon series in the nation. On Saturday, September 20 & Sunday, September 21, the 37th annual Peachtree City Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival will be held at Shakerag Knoll, 191 McIntosh Trail. Festival hours are from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, and 12noon to 5pm Sunday. The festival features handmade crafts and food vendors. Saturday, September 27 is the date for the 7th International Festival & Dragon Boat Races, from 9am to 5pm. Lake McIntosh will be the setting for racing excitement, as well as culture, arts and foods from around the world. Saturday, October 4 is a great day to get up early and walk! Meet up at the McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. The walk starts at 8am and lasts until 12noon. There’s high-flying action Saturday & Sunday, October 11 & 12, at the Great Georgia Air Show, held at Atlanta Regional Airport-Falcon Field. couple of years ago, if you asked me what I thought about the Farmers Market, I might have told you about the various fruits and veggies that you could find when they’re in season. But that’s not how I see the Farmers Market today. Today when I visit the Peachtree City Farmers Market in Aberdeen Shopping Center, I do it for social reasons as much as for the value of the fresh food and homemade items. In fact, it’s one of my favorite “Third Places.” I’d like to take you on a personal visit around the Peachtree City Farmers Market. I’ll introduce you to some of my friends who I look forward to visiting as I make my rounds. As we go around, I’ll tell you about them. On a nice spring day, I park my car and head straight over to Cheryl Brown to get a cup of Blue Donkey Coffee. If it’s a bit warm, I’ll make it an “Iced coffee, please!” We have time to say “hi” and she asks about my PTC app, and I inquire about her daughters who sometimes work with her. Then I go across the walkway to visit one of my friends, Rich Brown. Rich is owner of Thirty2Potts, and the only potter in the market—and an extremely talented potter! He creates interesting bowls and an extensive variety of pieces that are very useful around the kitchen. Rich looks like a professional basketball player, but he’s a schoolteacher in Clayton County where he teaches Art and serves as the Media Specialist. Rich lives in Peachtree City and hopes someday to fulfill his entrepreneurial dreams of having his own studio. In between customers (who all love his work and come by to check out what’s new), we talk about his plans to build his own studio and make a living from his art. Our conversations are sometimes long and varied. One thing is for certain—we both come away with a renewed feeling of appreciation G G for each other. (continued next page)

Just a couple of booths down is my favorite bakery—Annie’s Baking. Annie is the French lady who always greets me with a beautiful smile and a cheerful French accent! She’s so popular that she usually has to employ two or three helpers to help her take care of all of her customers. Her bakery products are incredibly delicious, so much so that some of our well-known local chefs purchase her goods! In the hurried atmosphere of her booth, we don’t get the chance to talk much, but I never walk away without a loaf of Sunflower Multigrain Bread—it’s so tasty. Beverly bakes delicious pies.

Larry Dove has always been inspired by that old proverb, ‘…teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ “I like to think I teach folks to grow their own food and so they’ll never go hungry,” he says. The PTC Community Garden is now in its third growing season, and Larry has been involved with it from the start. At the beginning, he did everything from directing volunteer fence builders all the way to completion of the framed beds. Now his duties include occasional tilling and garden maintenance. More important, though, is his dedication to helping others learn to grow organic vegetables. Larry publishes a gardening blog and answers questions as they come up. “I do a lot of ‘hand-holding,’ my term for helping novice gardeners become successful,” he explains. “The blog serves as my means to implement and orchestrate planting schedules for the greatest chance of success.” He’s quick to point out that he’s not too old to learn from other gardeners. “Until I got involved with the community garden, I’d never seen artichokes growing in Georgia,” Larry reports. “Lo and behold, through shear neglect, one of our first year gardeners successfully grew an artichoke! I watched this ‘thing’ grow all winter and was truly amazed how productive it was!” Larry gets a kick out of the yard art folks use to personalize their garden plots—gnomes, flags, even a rattlesnake!—but his favorite part of volunteering at the PTC Community Garden is being part of the success stories. “To see the pride folks have from growing their own produce is a real blessing,” he says. “And I think we’ve created a real sense of community among our gardeners.”

The official booth for the Farmers Market is just a few feet away. That’s where Tricia Stearns hangs out when she’s not walking the turf and talking to the vendors. Tricia was the person who brought the farmers market to Peachtree City. She’s a true believer in organic and non-processed foods. While she makes her living selling real estate, her real passion is healthy living and organic foods. She’s told me how she would drive to Decatur every weekend to buy her organic vegetables and fruit until she got the bright idea to start a farmers market in Peachtree City. That’s a long story for another time. Right now it’s enough to know Tricia is the lady that made it happen, and she still has her hand on the wheel. When Tricia’s not around, I see Tiffany Hannon who shares the passion for the Peachtree City Farmers Market and has her own farm, Sage Hill. Chris Reynolds, another food advocate, is helping her with her new venture. In the corner booth is Jenny O’Connor of Capra Gia Farms who has delicious goat’s milk cheese and fresh cage-free eggs laid by “happy hens”—they really do taste better! Her baby goats delight both children and grandparents, and she requests customers bring back their egg cartons so we don’t add to the landfills. At the next booth to the right is Anna who works at McCrary Farms. She always has the best vegetables and salad fixings around! When in season, her handpicked pecans are uniquely delicious. Across from Anna is Bryan Vaughn; he handcrafts a delightful range of soaps. He calls his homemade line “Earths Essentials.” The soaps come in a variety of scents and composition. Bryan even has a special soap for pets. His customers come back again and again, so you know his products are good! The soaps make great gifts, too, and he makes up holiday gift packages at certain times of the year. As I work my way down the aisle, I can’t pass up the 36 | the guide to peachtree city | Summer – Fall 2014
chance to chat with my friend Beverly of Brown’s Brownies who makes the best sweet potato/pumpkin pie you’ve ever put in your mouth. That’s not to say that I don’t purchase her tasty key lime pie or one of her famous gluten free items, like muffins or brownies. Beverly also takes orders for parties and large groups. While you meander around the Farmers Market, you’re likely to meet old friends who you haven’t seen in months, or even years. People stroll along with their families and pets. It makes for a great time to catch up and say “hi!” You always see a lot of hugging going on! On most days, everyone enjoys live music. My favorite band is “Those Two Guys,” Rick Massengale and Bill Nelms. They play my favorite kind of smooth jazz and, occasionally, some bluegrass. Other regulars are Cappo 3 and Tom Watts. These are just a few of the vendors and a sampling of the variety of homegrown produce and handcrafted products that are available. Take time next Wednesday or Saturday to treat yourself to my “Third Place”—the Peachtree City Farmers Market, or visit the newest Farmers Market in the MacDuff Plaza. You’ll be glad you did, and you’ll head home refreshed, in a good mood, and loaded with great homemade and homegrown products!

Peach Mac is a highlight for everyone’s visit to The Avenue. It’s the place to find the latest Apple computers, tablets, phones and accessories. For nearly 10 years, Cathy Spitz has been an important part of Clothes Less Traveled. She’s become known as “the shoe lady” to regular shoppers, but actually, Cathy points out, she sorts and prices accessories like hats, purses and scarves as well. There’s a lot more to Cathy, too—she’s also a life coach and stained glass artist! Even with her busy schedule, Cathy enjoys volunteering time to the community. The flexibility of Clothes Less Traveled makes it a perfect fit. Cathy says the best part of volunteering at Clothes Less Traveled is the people. “The staff, volunteers and shoppers are kind, caring, gentle people. The store attracts people who are deep in spirit.” One of the people Cathy credits is Jenny Loper. “Jenny’s the reason we’re so successful,” she says. “She’s grown the store into a clean, bright, happy and professional shop. She brings in new ideas, keeps things fresh and makes sure everyone is treated with friendly respect.” Cathy suggests that potential volunteers check out Clothes Less Traveled. “Not only does the shop offer flexible hours, but everyone gets to do what they enjoy and, best of all, it’s full of joy, fun and like-minded people.”

Dining & Shopping Jeanie Harrer, Real Life Center Volunteer
There are volunteering opportunities for everyone’s skills, as Jeanie Harrer can attest. One day in 2008, while studying the Bible, Jeanie read a short passage about how God wants us to take care of the poor. “This was not surprising or new information to me, and I felt the urge to examine my life and think about how I might take this more seriously,” she explains. Jeanie spoke with her friend, Vicki Troyer, volunteer coordinator for the Real Life Center, who has a talent for assessing people’s abilities and matching them with needs at the Center. “Within several days she called me to say that a need just arose for a bookkeeper. It was a perfect fit with my accounting background,” Jeanie says. “I’m thrilled to be able to help meet needs of under resourced people in a way that perfectly fits my talents!” Real Life Center has two thrift stores, one in Tyrone and one in Fayetteville. Store proceeds fund the ministry of the Real Life Center. Jeanie tallies daily sales, reports profits from the stores and pays the bills. Occasionally, she helps sort clothing and canned goods. “But most of the time, I’m sitting at a computer doing my bookkeeping,” she says. Jeanie adds that it’s rewarding and fun to volunteer at the Real Life Center, but that the best part is watching how God meets the needs of some with the talents of others. “Clients not only receive food and clothing, but also tools to help them recover from challenging situations. The Real Life Center volunteers truly care about the clients and it’s evident in their conversation and actions.” One of Jeanie’s favorite memories is a Mothers Day when her family came to the Center and sorted canned goods as a Mothers Day gift to her. “It was a wonderful Mothers Day that I will always remember!”
