February 2018

A word from our Chair As this is our first edition of 2018, let me wish you all a happy (albeit belated) New Year! May 2018 be wonderful for you, your families, our SILC friends, charities and indeed Thailand as a whole. We hit the ground running with a lively January, which saw SILC members signing-up in larger numbers than ever for our coffee mornings, tours and evening activities. It is fantastic to hear from so many of you that you are loving the variety of our events.. So much so that you are bringing your friends along to join SILC too. Membership is at an all time high, so thank you so much all of you - let’s keep it up! February is also brimming with new things to try - from a trip to one of the most fascinating railway markets, to a styling masterclass, Tri-Dash, and Valentine’s Day cookie decorating. And to soothe the spirit, how about a taster yoga session? As part of our effort to help groups less fortunate than ourselves, the SILC Community team have arranged a visit to the IDC (Immigration Detention Centre) where a few hours of your time can make a real difference to the detainees’ lives. Read on to find out more about how you can get involved!

Tracey xx

SILC TOUR OF THE MONTH: Maeklong Railway Market Many markets in Thailand look the same. But one that definitely stands out is the Maeklong Railway Market. Why? Because it has a train running down the middle of it several times a day - close enough to touch. Only in Thailand! This market has everything we’ve come to know and love in Thai markets. Its stalls have displays of fruits, veggies, meats, seafood, as well as sweet snacks, clothing, and flowers. A charming little warning bell goes off over the speaker system just a few minutes before the train comes. Within a few minutes, vendors pull back their specially designed awnings before the train comes, sometimes only moments before. That’s why the market is locally known as the Talat Rom Hoop (ตลาดรม หุบ) or “Market Umbrella Close.” Date: Monday 5th February Meet: True Coffee outside Bangkok Patana School at 8am (estimated return: 3pm) Attendees will share the cost of a van. COMMUNITY PROJECTS: IDC visit - can you join? By Laura Troncoso The IDC is Thailand’s Immigration Detention Centre, where people (often refugees and asylum seekers) who are here illegally and either can’t afford or don’t want to return to their country, are detained indefinitely. Conditions are tough, with around 1000 detainees far from home and separated from their families. The SILC Community team plans to set-up regular visits to the IDC (on Sathorn Road, a short taxi ride from BTS Sala Deng), and is organising the first trip on Tuesday, 6th February 2018. If you can join, you can make a real difference to someone’s life! You will bring them much needed fresh food and essentials, a chance to be outside the cell, the feeling that they have not been forgotten, and above all, hope. The more volunteers that come, the more detainees we can give the

opportunity to get out of their cell and into the visitors hall. If two visitors visit two members of a family on the same day, then those who are separated by gender can be reunited for a while. If you are interested in participating (either this month or on an ongoing basis), please contact Marianne and Laura on silc.community@gmail.com. COMMUNITY PROJECTS: Kids’ day fun

On the second Saturday in January, Thai people celebrate Children’s Day, or “Wandek”. The day is all about letting children have fun and creating public awareness around the role of young people in Thailand’s development. Families and children can visit Government and Parliament buildings, as well as Military bases. It may sound strange to foreigners, but on this special day they even allow children to handle weapons or sit in the Prime Minister’s chair! Children also get free access to national parks. SILC was keen to mark this day with the kids at ‘our’ two Daycare centres. Thanks to sponsors, we were able to invite Clown Chang, who the kids adored! Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special.

SILC MEMBERS: Bangkok Pesto Ingredients 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 cups tightly packed fresh basil, washed 3 Tbsp ground almonds, shop bought or home ground ½ cup grated parmesan cheese, preferably Parmigiano Reggiano ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp unsalted butter at room temperature

This recipe comes from SILC’s bilingual cookbook silccookbook@gmail.com In aid of community projects

Method Combine garlic, basil, nuts and a pinch of salt, then whizz until smooth-ish in a food processor or with a hand blender. Add oil slowly; you are aiming for a semi-wet consistency not a paste so you may need more oil. Add cheese and butter and pulse until nicely blended. Taste and add salt if desired. Top with melted butter. Serve stirred into cooked pasta or as a dip with toasted ciabatta. Notes : Pine nuts are hard to come by in Bangkok and when you do find them, they are very expensive and sometimes rancid from being on the supermarket shelf too long. Using ground almonds was a revelation - readily available, the taste is no different from the usual pine nut pesto! 16
