EDITOR'S LETTER 21 glorious years of Siliguri Photographic Society and what an incredible journey since its foundation on 21st January 1996. The organization has a huge contribution in the field of photography and I as a member of this is always proud of my organization. Apart from various indoor and outdoor activities, Siliguri Photographic Society has been organising an exhibition on account of World Photography Day celebration every year successfully, and it is in this exhibition the very idea of Inside Photography was conceived. Actually, Anubhav, a member of Siliguri Photographic Society came up with an idea of launching a newsletter, but after a long discussion, this idea was upgraded to a full-fledged online magazine. We after a head breaking research named it ' Inside Photography ' and here we are after one year with the support and encouragement of more than 10000 serious readers. It has been a wonderful journey with the magazine. A journey of self-realization and creativity, experimentation with photographic art, to find a new way to encourage the amateurs and above all loving the subject of photography passionately each day. We have published 12 issues of Inside Photography and it was always our priority to publish the magazine on the first day of each month. We have tried our level best to keep a standard of our content in the magazine, though few issues arose in our magazine regarding images and some mistakes in the articles. But I am not justifying those and rather accepting them and assuring everyone henceforth all issues will be error free. We are trying to learn from our mistakes committed and developing ourselves each day. Like we have done a lot of experimentation to change the design of our magazine to make it look better and many new segments have been incorporated to make it more interesting. This is the 13th issue of Inside Photography and its a proud moment for all of us and I would like to congratulate the entire team of Inside Photography for their hard work and constant support. Lastly, the festive season is in its colours, do utilize these moments of festivity and grandeur and click some good photos. Be careful with your camera equipment while handling them in the crowd. Keep the instruments at a safe distance from fireworks. Enjoy the time with your family and friends but take some time out and enjoy this issue of Inside Photography. BHASKAR PAUL Editor

ONE YEAR OF

INSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY THE INSIDE STORY The one that started it all It was meant to be a photography newsletter for all the amateur photo enthusiasts around North Bengal. Later on the idea became a bit bigger, to make a small online magazine where photographers can share there knowledge and experiences. This was the pitch that was made with the idea "IF WE MAKE A MAGAZINE" it may look like. That idea gave birth to

INSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY.

The WEAK ONE As far this entire year is concerned, the November issue is considered the Weakest issue ever by our team. The magazine was just started, there wasn't much of a response and the team was still figuring out what type of content should go and it became the smallest issue with just 15 pages.


The ONE where they found there way The January issue is one the most viewed and downloaded issue till date. Also, this issue was special because this issue contained the experiences on the very first SPS Weekender, which was held in CoochBehar.A big team of photographers covered the auspicious Rashmela. It was a one of kind initiative taken by Siliguri Photographic Society.

THE COOL ONE Although the magazine was fluidly moving forward we realized that graphically compared to any publication, we are far behind. This is an issue where the graphics team gave a full makeover and created the look of the magazine what you enjoy now. Also, a whole lot of new segments Like - BEHIND THE LENS, IMAGE SQUARE were introduced, which later became regular columns of the magazine.

THE one where it goes international After the April issue released, the IP team received overwhelming responses. To get things to the next level the content team reached out to some international photographers. Sebastian Jacobitz was very generous to write for us. NEWS Photographer Settles ‘Monkey Selfie’ Copyright Lawsuit

Photographer David Slater has finally settled his two-year legal battle over the monkey selfie photos that went viral back in 2011. The animal rights group PETA has dropped the lawsuit against Slater after Slater agreed to donate 25% of all future profits from the photo to registered charities “dedicated to protecting the welfare or habitat” of the monkey named Naruto. Naruto the macaque monkey had originally snapped selfies of itself after picking up Slater’s camera in an Indonesian national park. After the photos went viral and were published far and wide, a debate erupted over whether Slater actually owned the copyright to the photos, since Naruto was technically the one who triggered the shutter. In September 2015, PETA sued Slater on Naruto’s behalf in order to have the copyright officially assigned to the 6-year-old monkey. Throughout the dispute, the US legal system and government both argued against PETA’s claim: the US Copyright Office stated it couldn’t register the works of monkeys in 2014, and a judge ruled that the monkey couldn’t own a copyright in 2016.


BOARD Despite these setbacks, PETA pushed forward with its legal battle against Slater, who revealed earlier this year that the lawsuit had driven him to financial ruin. In announcing the settlement on 13th sept , PETA states that the case “broke new ground for animal rights.” “PETA and David Slater agree that this case raises important, cutting-edge issues about expanding legal rights for nonhuman animals, a goal that they both support, and they will continue their respective work to achieve this goal,” PETA and Slater write in a joint statement. “Naruto and the famous ‘monkey selfie’ photographs that he undeniably took clearly demonstrate that he and his fellow macaques—like so many other animals—are highly intelligent, thinking, sophisticated beings worthy of having legal ownership of their own intellectual property and holding other rights as members of the legal community,” PETA says. Although Slater can now freely license the monkey selfies and keep 75% of the profits, it remains to be seen whether there’s still enough demand for the images to compensate for the financial and emotional toll caused by the costly lawsuit.


Apple Unveils the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X with Next-Gen Photo Features Apple has just officially announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, a new generation of iPhones that boast, among other features, upgraded cameras for improving the photos captured by the masses. There’s also a brand new Portrait Lighting technology. The new glass-backed iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch Retina HD displays, respectively. Inside the phones is a new A11 Bionic six-core CPU that’s not only powerful for the phone’s general speed and functions but also beneficial for photography as well. It allows for faster low-light autofocus, improved pixel processing, and hardware noise reduction.


There’s a new 12-megapixel main camera module in both phones that has lower noise and a wider dynamic range. The dual camera system on the iPhone 8 features a f/1.8 main camera and a f/2.8 telephoto camera. Apple says the new imaging sensor is 83% more light efficient and uses less battery power as well, allowing you to shoot more photos and video on a charge. Optical image stabilization will be present on not just the iPhone 8 Plus, but the iPhone 8 as well. Portait Mode has been improved, resulting in sharper foregrounds and backgrounds that are blurred more naturally.


On the video front, Apple says the iPhone 8 line has the highest quality video capture ever offered in a smartphone. The phone analyzes 2 million tiles in the scene per second to predict image and movement. In addition to 4K 60fps, you’ll also be able to shoot 1080p slow motion at 240fps — twice the frame rate as the iPhone 7. The cameras are also specially calibrated for augmented reality technology, capturing low-light at 60fps with accurate motion tracking and a new gyroscope and accelerator.


Other iPhone 8 features include wireless charging, water and dust resistance, and dual-domain pixels for a wider viewing angle. Portrait Lighting What’s very new in the new iPhones is a “Portrait Lighting” feature. While Portrait mode in the iPhone 7 helped simulate a shallow depth of field for nicer looking portraits, Portrait Lighting helps simulate professional lighting. When framing a subject, you’ll have a number of different lighting options to choose from for giving your portrait different looks — things like Contour Light, Natural Light, Studio Light, Stage Light, and Stage Light Mono.


iPhone X The phone features an edge-to-edge, 5.8-inch, 2436×1125-pixel Super Retina display, great for enjoying phones and videos. It’s the highest pixel density (458ppi) ever introduced in an iPhone and is also the first OLED display used in an iPhone. There’s no Home button — the feature has been replaced by a “Swipe Up” and by a new Face ID system that powerfully recognizes your face regardless of things like hairdo, glasses, makeup, and more. The system is powered by a TrueDepth camera on the front of the phone that will bring new power to selfie-mode photography. The rear camera system uses dual 12megapixel cameras with larger and faster sensors. There’s a new color filter and deeper pixels. The standard and telephoto cameras feature f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures, respectively, with the f/2.4 being faster than the f/2.8 telephoto found in the iPhone 8.


Both cameras feature optical image stabilization that enables better lowlight zoom and improved video stabilization. In between the camera modules is a Quad-LED True Tone flash with 2x better uniformity of light. The front-facing cameras can do both Portrait Mode and the new Portrait Lighting feature. The iPhone X will have 64GB in its base model and 256GB in its high-end one. Preorders begin on October 27th, and shipping will commence on November 3rd.

Netflix Buys Rights to ‘Kodachrome’ Movie About the Last Days of the Film Netflix has just bought the rights to a movie that photography enthusiasts may find fascinating. Kodachrome is set in the final days of Kodachrome film. The movie itself is named after the popular Kodak film that came into existence in 1935 and was discontinued in 2009. a report from hollywood reporter says that the deal for the film cost Netflix $4 million. Starring Oscar nominee Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis, and Elizabeth Olsen, Kodachrome follows a father and son as they race across the country on a roadtrip to reach the world’s last remaining Kodachrome lab before it closes its doors. The screenplay is based on A.G. Sulzberger’s 2010 New York Times article “For Kodachrome Fans, Road Ends at Photo Lab in Kansas.” The film generated a “strong buzz” at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Netflix will now be launching the film in a theatrical release. Netflix has rights to the film in the US, Canada, UK, Italy, Benelux, Japan, India, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland. No word yet on when exactly the film will hit the big screens. Phase One’s IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Back Sees Color Like the Human Eye Phase One today unveiled the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Digital Back. It is based on a new CMOS sensor that perceives color close to what the human eye sees. The new sensor was created in a collaboration between Sony and Phase One. Phase One already has a 100 megapixel back, but the new IQ3 100MP Trichromatic digital back uses a new Bayer filter color technology that produces more accurate colors. Most of the other features like sensor size (53.4 x 40.1), active pixels (11,608 x 8,708), dynamic range (15 f-stops), pixel size in microns (4.6 x 4.6 microns) and 3.2-inch rear touch display are the same. However, the base ISO drops from 50 in the earlier back to 35 in the Trichromatic to produce a very clean image with low digital noise. “The proof is in the pudding when it comes to how clean are those files, how clean are those filters,” says Dave Gallagher CEO of Capture Integration who has been working with Phase One for the last 18 years and just got his hands on the new back. “Those three filters, if they can give us a more precise pass through of the RGB color, rather than if one filter overlaps 400-550 nanometers and the other one starts at 500, that 50 nanometers of overlap passing through both filters is going to cause muddiness.


“A cleaner more precise light transmission to the individual pixel is what we want. Then our algorithms to determine color are going to be easier. We don’t have to skew colors on one end to repair them on another because there will be a cleaner pass through with all three filter patterns as compared to what we are getting.” The sensor is still using a Bayer pattern, but it has a different filter set, i.e., the material is different and thus has a different transmissive property. At 300 dpi, which is the printing benchmark often requested, a print size of 30×40-inches (28.8×38.7, to be exact) is possible with incredible sharpness and now accurate color as well. Although the majority of shooters would be tethering when shooting with this back, the landscape photographer has the choice of using a Compact Flash card in the single slot that it provides. The sensor is sealed for dust and moisture. The Trichromatic will shoot only in RAW at 14-bit or 16-bit, and you will need Capture One Pro 10 to open the files. Australian fine art photographer Tony Hewitt, who has been shooting with this Trichromatic back, says: “As a photographer, one of the things that excites me the most is having the opportunity to use color to evoke emotion. The Trichromatic Camera System itself becomes a true extension of my vision, and what my eye sees and what my eye wants to express – the camera delivers.”


The older 100MP back produces very usable images up to 6,400 ISO and with the substantially less color noise on the Trichromatic it should produce clean 6,400 ISO images and may even go up to 12,800 ISO which is the maximum setting. We have seen only some very early tests with the Trichromatic and more rigorous testing will have to be done to see color fringing in the blown out highlights or speckled color noise in the deep dark shadows. Digital backs have moved from CCDs to CMOS. Some photographers have loved the rendition of clean highlight exposure from blown out to non-blown out and the lack of color fringing that they were getting with CCDs. The Trichromatic does seem to get us a little back to this level of the CCD with the CMOS sensor. It was only in May of this year that Phase One announced the IQ3 100MP Achromatic back where the filter pattern was removed for shooting purely Black & White photography. “The ability to capture an image that reflects exactly what you see the moment you press the shutter button, with little interpretation or conjecture, is a fantastic leap for photography and more importantly, for the integrity of image quality,� says Phase One Image Quality Professor and VP, Niels Knudsen. source- Phase One Press Release

The place has a huge hype around it. It is the most beautiful place on earth every inch in Gulmarg is beautiful. ’

Gulmarg becomes a dream land of your photography, you just fantasize that you will just press a button and Gulmarg will do the rest . I started my journey on March 14th from Srinagar to Gulmarg. It takes 2 and half hours to reach. The temperature in Srinagar when I started was 1 degree Celsius and I heard from my driver bhaiya that it s minus 7 in the Gulmarg.I researched a bit about Gulmarg on web, and I thought that would be enough, Internet doesn t help in the Gulmarg scenario. You have to pretend it s 1990, and you have to use the most efficient way of gathering information, TALK TO PEOPLE. I am very new to photography and I don t have the eligibility to give tips to pro photographers, I am writing this for people like me who have just started clicking pictures and want to explore places. So I started chatting up with my driver Raju bhaiya that what maybe the current conditions in Gulmarg, and how is Gulmarg actually. I had to have a view from the local perspective. ’

As I was approaching to the place the anxiety was starting to rise, "There was so much I heard about this place ". Even I was getting fun history trivia from my driver like - "The place was originally named " GAURI MARG " and later changed to Gulmarg" - " It has world’s highest golf course " and I also heard about the rise of militancy in the area since 1990’s, which has affected the tourism badly.

The car slowly entered the parking area of the golf course (it wasn’t slow for dramatic entrance, as there were a lot of cars previously). I got out of the car looked around and it was beyond my words the beauty I saw. And then came the actual feeling "How the hell, I will create images? This is not a dream it is a nightmare. My heart started pounding I tried to take off my sunglasses and it almost made me blind. It was another issue I wanted to take pictures but I am watching everything 1 stop under exposed than the reality. So the review option after taking a picture is out of the window, now I have only the Histogram.

After I started to walk through the ice I realized that it is harder to walk. Walking on ice is really hard. So I hired sleigh so that I can roam around the place. But before I delve into the sleigh journey I thought I should familiarize myself with the place. So I started to talk with the people around the place, the vendors, shop keepers I wanted to look into Gulmarg from a different perspective. There I met some beautiful four legged friends who were playing in the ice. and I started taking pictures of them and got quite some great shots.

After I enjoyed my time with dogs I started to follow one who was roaming around the ice covered course and he was completely alone walking through the ice and slowly far behind that St. Mary s church came to my sight and as quick as possible I framed the shot.Gulmarg is a challenge for photographers, I wanted to shoot 360 degree images and if you don t have 360 degree camera it takes a lot patience to shoot and stitch images. But I managed to take one and then I took my ride on sleigh. '

THAT WOULD BE HARDER (IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE) TO CORRECT IF SHOOTING IN JPEG. IF YOU’RE INTIMIDATED BY THE LARGER FILE SIZE, BE SURE TO (APART FROM GROWING A PAIR) BRING ALONG EXTRA (OR LARGER) MEMORY CARDS (SOMETHING YOU SHOULD ALREADY BE PRACTICING) TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASED SIZE.




During this I got to know a lot about Gulmarg and how its politically volatile situation is affecting the tourism. When I entered the valley everything around me was white, it was everywhere we climbed up to the view point and I was literally spellbound. Gulmarg is a heaven for travelers, skiing enthusiasts, and it s a huge pilgrim for photographers. You can learn a lot here because it forces you to learn otherwise you aren t getting anything good. ’

- NEVER DELETE IMAGES IN THE FIELD! IT CAN BE TEMPTING TO DELETE AN IMAGE AFTER TAKING A PEAK AT THE LCD OR WHEN FEARFUL OF RUNNING OUT OF ROOM ON YOUR CAMERA CARD. BUT NEVER

DELETE AN IMAGE UNTIL YOU HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO VIEW IT ON A LARGER SCREEN INDOORS. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES WHEN AN IMAGE THAT LOOKED LIKE CRAP IN THE FIELD TURNED OUT TO BE A WONDERFUL IMAGE ONCE I HAD A CHANCE TO FULLY EXAMINE IT. USE YOUR HISTOGRAM TO DETERMINE THE EXPOSURE YOUR CAMERA IS GETTING (DISCUSSED ABOVE), OR SIMPLY BRING ALONG EXTRA MEMORY CARDS.



Reinvent this place the way you want, always try to look at a different perspective. If you become too respectful of the stories and myths around it, you won ’ t be getting anything new. I was also very lucky to meet

My photo trip ended with a really great lunch we ate beside a huge icy wall. And I also had leave Gulmarg because a snow storm was coming very fast. The weather of Gulmarg can change in seconds. All of a sudden a bright sunny day became dark. So I left as early as possible leaving behind one of the most magnificent photography experience behind. KEEP YOUR BATTERIES WARM

My Nostalgic Streets. by ARUP BISWAS In spite of all busyness in life some imagination and intuition always works in our mind simultaneously. When I pour myself in shooting then these imagination n intuition both in my mind and heart.

I am a passionate Street and Travel Photographer from Siliguri, West Bengal. A Computer Teacher by profession, my interest in photography developed at a very small age while playing around with a small film camera and compact digital camera.............


All pictures have a word but few of them have a thousand words to speak. When instant intuition and stored imagination in mind connect with each other, only then I think an image can say a story, well these are my feelings only! In my every picture, I wanted to show different types of feelings and emotions of different people surrounding me and to show the socioeconomic life of my home town Siliguri and its adjacent area through my Street and Documentary Photography.

My City's Streets have always been very nostalgic to me, whenever I go through on these; its every corner is so familiar to me that it evokes my emotions. Due to my work commitments, I don't have such chances to shoot outside my city or another side of my country where plenty of subjects are available, that is why I always try to prevent my shooting appetite by capturing my very own City's Street activities.Â


There is nothing special for photography in my city like others but I always try to catch special moments and emotions of people from their daily life. My city is Siliguri, situated in northern part of West Bengal, India near Himalayan foothills. I have been shooting in this small town since my interest grew in Street Photography. I have taken lots of pictures of this city, its people and their day to day activities on the street side.Due to small town every time whenever I am walking around on it's main roads usually I can see my people, characters static subjects whom I have once photographed.. I feel that, I am living with those people like my family, who was photographed by me. Everyday I used to see them in photos as well as in real life. This is just my nostalgic emotions which I tried to convey through my photographs and these pictures always sail along with me on the emotional boat of my daily life. ................I bought my first DSLR Camera in 2010 and started taking pictures on street and different type of landscapes. Add a little bit of body text Unaware of the concept of photography I am a self taught photographer. I worked on my skills through images of famous photographers in street an travel photography genre. I strongly believe that an image is a success when the viewer

can connect with the subject in the photograph. I like capturing people in their natural behaviour in surrounding activities on street and think that every situation has a story to tell. I want to show reality in the photos as well as natural occurrences street. Some of my memorable achievements was winning some POTD, some publications


in Smart Photography Magazine, Asian Photography etc. I have also received good placements and reviews in some competitions and my work has been published in various print and online magazines and blogs. I am also a contributor to Getty images. But as a great success I consider recognition of people in social networks that follow and appreciate my regular work. Though a teacher by profession, I will always be a student when it comes to photography.

Behind The Lens of Sanjib Mukherjee It was an afternoon of spring time. A kid was roaming with his mother in front of my house. I was seated on my balcony and my eyes noticed that. The boy was so cute and his eyes were very beautiful. Suddenly I brought my camera out and spotted him. The boy noticed that and he was trying to recognize that thing which I was holding that time. He started to walk again but his eyes were very curious about the camera and he looked behind again and again. after several times of attempt I succeeded to capture that moment which made me delighted. I reached to the child and gave him a chocolate and in return, he gave me a priceless smile. After many days I can feel that.

Relation of Photography Composition and Mathematics by

What is the co-relation between photography and mathematics? Readers may be getting bored. But it’s a very interesting and essential fact of photography. Readers will not read the article who doesn’t like mathematics. I must tell all the photographers knowingly or unknowingly use mathematics at th time of clicking shutter. The Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO, Focal length all this are related to a complicated equation and photographers are managing it very efficiently from the dawn. But today I will discuss the application of mathematics in the composition of a frame or can be said as to make a photograph mathematically correct to give it more artistic nature.


How ? Confused! We will make you understand through this article about the Golden Spiral composition.What is spiral composition and why it is called golden? Now we go deep into it.

Firstly we need to know the golden ratio i.e 1:1.618 and that concept comes from the Fibonacci's number series. This series was named by the name of Leonardo Fibonacci.In Pisa, Italy in the year 1202 AD. Leonardo Pisano Bigollo was a young man in his twenties, a member of an important trading family of Pisa. While travelling throughout the Middle East, he was captivated by the mathematical ideas that had come west, from India, through the Arabic countries. When he returned to Pisa he published these ideas in a book on mathematics called Liber Abaci, which became a landmark in Europe. Leonardo, who has since come to be known as Fibonacci, became the most celebrated mathematician of the Middle Ages.He contributed the significant number of series and the sequence. 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,14,.....,......


0 1 0+1=1 1+2=3 2+3=5 3+5=8 5+8=11 8+13=21 13+21=34 21+34=55 34+55=89 55+89=144 89+144=233 ............... .................. .................... Now how does the golden ratio comes from this number of series? Take any two of the sums next to each other and divide the larger by the smaller, then the result will be close to the golden ratio, as 5+8=13 8+13=21 now 21/13=1.6153.. just as above the image.


Geometrically. if we place a point on a line and divide the largest with the smallest part the ratio will become approximately 1.618 or nearest.This is the golden ratio. Now the interesting point is this ratio we can found everywhere in this living or non-living world. Since the beginning of universe everywhere, everything whatever was created perfectly maintained the golden ratio. As an example, the shape of the galaxy, shape of all living things maintained that ratio.

Even the DNA structure of human being and other animals, human body and all parts, the snails, all types of flower and the destroyer like Hurricanes everything we can observe.

The great pyramids and the great Parthenon are the great examples of the golden ratio. Â Here in the great Pyramid of Giza, whose length of each side of the base is 756 feet and the height is 481 feet. The ratio is approximatel y 1.5717 close to the golden ratio.

Mathematically the golden ratio can be written as Phi(Â Â )and the equation can be written as a/b= (a+b)/a=1.618035..., same as the value of Pi. Phi is usually rounded off to 1.618 and it had been discovered and re-discovered so many times, so it has many names like Golden mean, Golden section,Divine proportion etc.

These boxes are the steps how the golden ratio can be built to make the golden spiral. Ok, let's start about the Golden Spiral. If we take a rectangle and sectioned it like the image given below applying the golden ratio and again if we draw a spiral like that, it is called as golden spiral. From the above images, we came to know how the golden spiral comes from the golden ratio. This ratio was used by the ancient painters knowingly or unknowingly and after so many years the debate is still on. But in nature, we can also see the spiral as the examples given previously. In case of art the golden ratio is perfectly balanced and that balance makes it pleasing to the human brain and this is the reason why mathematics is applied in art. In ancient days the famous paintings Monalisa and The Last Supper were the perfect examples of such art. Now in modern days of photography , people named it as Golden Spiral Composition

Again if we consider the golden spiral equation in polar co-ordinates the equations become r = aeθ cot b where,r is the distance from the origin, a is a constant, θ is the angle from the horizontal axis. So the coordinates of a point on the curve in polar coordinates is given by (r, θ). b is the angle that the line from the center of the spiral makes with the tangent to the spiral. The Golden spiral has the special property such that for every 1/4 turn (90 degrees in radians), the distance from the center of the spiral increases by the golden ratio Phi( )=1.6180.in co-ordinate geometry the curve is looked like as the graph above. Its a huge equation along with complicated calculations. Now we will not get into this, rather we will try to understand how to use it in photography art. But before that I must tell that if you know the basics of that thing, you can easily use it to the compositions. A simple thing is that if nature and the God maintained the same rule and same ratio then why can't we? We will try to make a photograph theoretically correct, which can be well-balanced in respect of aesthetical sense.

If we place a point of interest on the smallest part of the spiral or the smallest rectangle as the images above, the human eye along with the brain will flow through the rest of the image. So during taking a photograph, imagine the curve over the frame and keep the point of interest to the smallest point of the spiral and make the shutter. We can flip or turn the spiral as per our requirement. The directions do not matter. The matter is the shape and distance of the loop. In case of portrait, the main attraction is always the eyes of that person. Now if we put the eye such in a position of composition, it pleases the eyes of Sometime you will find some the viewer just like the image beside. interesting moments to be happen, just wait for it, to let it happen. Just like the image at the left, but there I tried to maintain the basic rules of composition. More you practice, more you can make it perfectly.



If you find any shape like any spiral, then wait there for any interesting subject to balance it in composition. Without patience one can never be able to capture a good and unique image. Try to avoid images from being cropped. A little bit (5-10%) can be allowed if it makes the photograph better.For me, I always try to capture the image in time of taking, so that the picture feels more real and authentic. But its a controversial concept.Lots of people think the opposite.

Frankly speaking, its a complicated type of composition and needs much practice. My teacher told me one trick. In time of composing a frame, try to divide it with 9 cells on a 3*3 grid and it can be done easily and quickly. Today we have cameras where Viewfinders or LCD has already such kind of grid and which can be used as the points of the rectangle and can be put the Golden Spiral within the rectangle.Â


In time of taking photograph, you can always find the grid or the dots at the viewfinder, try to imagine the curve and place your point of interest according to that.It is not easy for the first time, but if you continuously try to find the subject according to that you can make it. Moreover, in any kind of photography, you can composite according to this composition rules of Golden Spiral.Â



Environment portrait or straight portrait, this composition rules always leaves its signature


Here in this case the hand along the facial expression is the point of attraction & the curve of the spiral cover her full body.



In case of environment portrait, need to place the subject according to background as background plays a important role of composition and yes, the depth of field is essential.





I must add here, this picture was taken at Varanasi, which is place of street photography. Just need to search the frames and compose them. The point of view is the small crowd with a typical background.Â



The face of the lady indeed the point of interest, but there are lots of interesting things in this frame, which is covered by the curve.


Sometimes on the field, you may confuse to choose the proper point of view as there may be more than one. I can suggest choosing anyone and add the other to balance it.Here also during taking this image, I was confused, but I waited there and try to balance it. But this kind of image if you draw the spiral you can see two subjects are there. you may find any frame with multiple POI. Go for it and just make the shutter. But yes if possible try to balance and maintain the rules.




In case of landscape there must one point of interest, just find and put into the composition.Â






Golden Spiral composition always leads the subject through the frame. The Spiral part covers the subject and the loop hold the point of interest & this the technique how to compose an image with this guideline. The curve area can denote the motion or the other objects which are for balancing the composition. Here in this case of above images, the curve area denotes the blank space, which is important to show the mood. I was a student of mathematics and I found the golden ratio certainly exists mathematically. But when I started photography,I was completely amazed to know about this composition.

Actually to apply golden ratio in photography, there are three rules (1) Golden Spiral (2) Golden Rectangle and (3) Golden Triangle In this article we discussed the first one, on the next issue will discuss the others two. In human face, all kind of shapes can found which are maintaining the golden ratio rules, either Spiral or Rectangle or Triangle.This is a perfect example of Golden ratio and that's why the Human figure is the most beautiful living object in this world in respect of art.

See this all images of Ansel Adam clearly maintained the Golden Spiral composition rules.Photography in those days was not easy at all and no one had the luxury to see the products on spot through the LCD screen. But now-a-days we have all the latest technological stuff, but we are becoming the slave of that machines. We are losing the ability to create something new. Things are very simple. Need only to obey the basic rules of composition at the earlier days of photography and when you become the master of this, you can create some exciting,something out of the world.

I tried my best to make you understand the Golden Spiral composition and when I was writing this article, I found so many things on my house which maintains the golden ratio. Now I must add something that people can say about the breaking of rules as there is a line everyone says as "If you know the rules, then you can break the rules".

Even I also believe in that theory, but if that breaking of rules makes the image unreal or unnatural, then what is the purpose of breaking. Photography art is to enhance the beauty of the photograph and if I simply break the composition rules and make the worst image, then I should not hold a camera as I don't have any right to insult such a beautiful subject of Photography.
