T
he Chattooga Club, a gated community located on Highway 107 South in Cashiers is named for the Chattooga River, one of the most naturally beautiful rivers in the United States. The word Chattooga was derived from the Cherokee "Tsatu-gi," which has been translated as “we crossed here” and appears several times in Cherokee culture. The Chattooga River falls over 2,500 feet from its origin near Cashiers to Lake Tugaloo on the Georgia-South Carolina border for a length of 57 miles. Ultimately, it empties into the Atlantic Ocean via the Savannah River. The Chattooga River became famous in 1972 as the filming location of Deliverance, and it was subsequently designated as a National Wild and Scenic River by Congress in 1974. In 1988, John Rivers from Charleston, South Carolina, acquired the property which consists of approximately 200 acres. From the very beginning, Rivers envisioned croquet as one of the main activities of The Chattooga Club. He read that croquet was becoming the “fastest growing sport in America.” The six-wicket croquet game originated in France in the fourteenth century and then later resurfaced in England. The game is quite different from the backyard croquet that we Americans played as children. As soon as the purchase was complete, Rivers decided to make croquet the cornerstone of the club,
aiming to create the finest croquet lawn and facility in the world. Accordingly, the croquet lawn was built like a golf green and treated much the same. Many world-class international croquet players have come to Chattooga to participate in various competitive events including the foremost player in the world at the time, Robert Fulford from England, who became Chattooga's in-house professional for several years. A beautiful open-air pavilion designed by the firm from Charlotte, NC, Neyer Greeson Pasullin, was built. It was crafted from hickory trees and overlooks the croquet lawns with a magnificent view of Chimneytop and Rock Mountains. The Chattooga Club lawns have been acknowledged all over the world as the best in North America and the Club was recognized in 1993 as the “Private Club of the Year” by the U.S. Croquet Association. In addition, three har-tru tennis courts were built, and a heated swimming pool was added to the Club. In 1996, The Lodge and adjoining cottages were added, again with the Meyer Greeson firm. The Dillard family raised seven children in the historic structure located on the property called the Dillard Farmhouse, built around 1899. This building was used for the tennis shop, children’s program, and gift shop. The building deteriorated beyond restoration and in the year 2000, the building was torn down and in its place, the Life Enhancement Center was built, which

houses a fitness center, spa, and gift shop. In 2016, the club added another venue, an Olympic-sized heated pool with a beautiful pavilion. Also built in 2016, the charming “Bear Bar” adjoins the original pavilion. Have guests staying in one of the Lodge's seven beautifully appointed suites? There is something for everyone to do at The Chattooga Club. Many social activities are offered, including dining, croquet, tennis, and a gym. The small gated community consisting of 80 homes has access to Lake Chattooga (fully stocked with trout) and Mac’s View, a beautiful picnic spot which is owned by the Chattooga Forest Homeowners Association. Fun & Fab Cocktails for the Season

Bourbon Spiked Hot Chocolate (yields 4 drinks) Ingredients: 2 oz. bourbon whiskey 6 oz. spiced hot chocolate (see recipe below) cinnamon sticks and/or marshmallows Instructions: Combine and savor Recipe for making Spiced Hot Chocolate Ingredients: 3 cups of milk 1 cup heavy cream Âź cup of sugar 1 cinnamon stick 2 whole star anise 1 tsp. dried ancho chile 1 cup chopped high-quality dark chocolate Combine milk, cream, sugar, and spices to a saucepan over low heat. When mixture reaches a simmer, remove from heat, cover and let steep for 30 minutes. Then return the recipe to a simmer. Add chocolate to another saucepan over low heat. Strain milk over the top and whisk to dissolve.

Champagne Cocktail (yields one drink) Ingredients: Champagne Angostura bitters Sugar cube Lemon twist Soak the sugar cube in the bitters for a few seconds, drop into a champagne flute, and fill with chilled champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist. Mistletoe Martini (yields one drink) Ingredients: 1.5 oz. vodka .75 oz. cherry brandy Juice of one lime Sprig of rosemary Raspberries Sugar Recipe: Rim a martini glass with sugar. Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice and pour in the ingredients. Shake until chilled and strain the mixture into the glass. Spear two raspberries on the end of a sprig of rosemary to garnish. get saucy Holiday “Sauce” Cocktail (yields one drink) Ingredients: 1 ½ oz. Hennessy V.S. cognac ½ oz. fresh lemon juice 1 heaping tsp. cranberry sauce 1 dash Fee Brothers cranberry bitters 1 orange twist for a garnish Coat the rim of a martini or coupe glass with a mixture of equal parts cinnamon and sugar, set aside. Add the remaining ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice. Shake and strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with the orange twist. Recipe by liquor.com Hanky Panky (yields one drink) Originally invented by head mixologist Ada Coleman from London’s Savoy Hotel in the early 20th century, this special cocktail uses the bitter Italian liqueur Fernet Branca that pairs well with gin. Fernet Branca is a blend of chamomile, cardamom, saffron, and rhubarb, which has digestive properties to help dispel the uncomfortable holiday bloat. Ingredients: 1 ½ oz. gin (for a dryer cocktail use 2 oz. gin) 1 ½ oz. sweet vermouth 2 dashes of Fernet Branca Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake well for 20 seconds and pour into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel (to infuse more orange flavor, light the peel on fire and let the heated orange oil drop into the glass). 24

Pineapple Punch (yields many drinks) Ingredients: 1 fresh pineapple 20 oz. joven (unaged) mezcal 10 oz. Carpano Biance vermouth 1 oz. mole bitters

Recipe: Peel pineapple and cut into four disks. Place fruit in a sealable container and cover with mezcal. Allow to infuse overnight at room temperature. Pour infused liquid through a fine strainer or cheesecloth; discard any solids. Mix the pineapple mezcal with vermouth and bitters. Let the entire mixture sit for 2 to 3 weeks. To drink, pour 2 ½ oz. portions into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake and strain into a coupe glass. Hot Toddy (yields 8 drinks) Ingredients: ¼ cup peeled ginger, sliced thin ½ cup of honey 1-2 cinnamon sticks ½ cup lemon juice 2 oz. fine rum Recipe: Heat 1 quart of water in a small saucepan, add ginger and simmer for 10 minutes. I
arrived by Virgin Trains first class from London to the bustling train station in Edinburgh, Scotland, after attending a conference to meet Richard Branson. Historic architecture meshed with modern lines and kilted locals cast a spell over me before my driver delivered us to the boutique hotel, Nira Caledonia. From the moment of arrival, the service was impeccable. Boyish grins and charming Scottish accents greeted us as we stared in amazement at the impressive stone building adorned with flowering hanging baskets. Europe is notorious for small hotel rooms, so I was amazed at how expansive our suite was, with an oversized jetted tub large enough for two. Fresh flowers upon arrival, a sitting room overlooking fresh gardens, and a wool couch all exuded coziness. Famished from travel, we stepped into the hotel restaurant, where whiskey-infused or-
ange marmalade danced on our taste buds. Edinburgh defines preserved heritage, effectively blending tradition with modern-day charm. Standing at the end of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle delights with its bountiful stone walls and historic roots. Moving and heartwarming, a Scottish gentleman in full kilt attire played "Amazing Grace" atop the cobblestone entrance. Storefronts along the Royal Mile are filled with local wool goods, scotch, and plaid designs you'll want to take home. Local haddock is featured in fish and chips entrees at every pub, and I recommend tasting many different flights of whiskey. You may find yourself intrigued by taking a look at the underground of Scotland, discovering a past world of bubonic plague and interesting characters in Mary King’s Close, the former city under the new city. It is slightly dusty

and chilling, but it's a sight worth seeing if you are into history. My favorite dining experience in Edinburgh was Scram and Scally. Freshly caught from the local sea, I dined on hake fish (a member of the cod family) and bone marrow, paired with flavorful curried cauliflower, spinach, and a hint of corn, easily earning a top-ten spot for fish dishes in the world. The Stockbridge area restaurant hints at sophistication with its low lighting and separate bar area, where it is easy to strike up a conversation with a local. If you enjoy Italian cuisine, a visit to Amarone is in order with a variety of true Italian tastes to satisfy any palate and an extensive wine list. Its boisterous personality allowing you to experience Scottish nightlife firsthand. Reluctantly leaving the charm of Edinburgh to see Scotland in a different light, I found myself in the West End of the industrial city of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow provided a picture-perfect architectural view reminiscent of Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Ranked in my top three Scottish eateries is Montgomery’s. With my all-time favorite eggs benedict, delightful pastries, incredible coffee, and a lovely atmosphere, it is a must-visit on the way to Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. All the museums in Glasgow are open to the public with complimentary admission. Plan at least an afternoon to view the history and art of Scotland. Although Edinburgh appeared to have more ancient stone walls and architecture, Glasgow did not disappoint with its historical cemetery, Necropolis. The views, the walk, and the monuments are postcard perfect and something interesting to take in if you enjoy interesting history. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT:

Parched, we hit up a local brewery, DryGate, which I quite enjoyed. It reminded me of an up-and-coming craft brewery that you could find anywhere in Western North Carolina, making a statement as a world-class “local” competitor. Now, I know I already said that you must try the whiskey. And you must. You will find one you like, as everyone will discover a slightly different flavor that suits them best. However, if I could make a further suggestion, you should also try Isle of Harris Gin. (This is coming from a woman who does not love gin.) Visit Brel Bar, loNC LIVING HOLIDAY 2018

cated on a cobblestone street that is home to many quaint spots that look inviting. Pair the Harris Gin with London’s Fever Tree Tonic Water and grapefruit (not lime!), and it might just become your go-to drink. I’ve kept you off the beaten path in Glasgow; however, most tourists stay downtown around the main train terminal where everything happens. With multiple shops for daytime pleasure, it also turns into the place to be for nightlife. The Pot Still is the most recommended traditional Scottish pub. The locals pride themselves on their Scotch, as they should. At heart, it is no secret that I am a champagne girl, so when I found the Champagne Bar (located in the Grand Central Hotel), I had to go. It was elegant and classy with several variations of champagnes available for order. 34

If I could recommend one more stop in Glasgow, it would be The Hidden Lane Tea Room. Once of the most darling places I think I have ever seen, it's completely off the tourist path. It features cozy spots for sipping tea amidst beautiful antiques for purchase. One of my favorite things about Scotland is the people. Stimulating dialogue and enchanting encounters with locals willing to point you in the right direction, discuss their heritage, or welcome you with a smile. Glasgow felt more fast-paced than the rest of Scotland, perhaps more daring to take risk, which made it feel like a hybrid of Brooklyn, New York, Portland, and Asheville. You need to look beyond the train tracks and industrial buildings to discover the gems, but when you do, you will be glad you said yes to adventure in Glasgow and the traditions in Edinburgh. •
