IN LIVING COLOR
WORDS BY Kristin Bowen
From Cashiers to the Caribbean, artist Shari Erickson uses her vivid palette to bring her favorite places to life. Sitting quietly at a café and obscured from view, American contemporary artist Shari Erickson absorbs the early morning bustle of a Caribbean island village. Rarely out of hand, her sketchbook is open wide and her pencil scrawls swiftly across the page, sketching the flashes of daily life that pass before her. A mother and daughter stroll arm in arm dressed colorfully in their Sunday best with a pretty pink parasol shading them from the sun’s blaze. A warm tropical breeze rustles the coconut palms across the road as if to draw Shari’s attention to the weathered fisherman gathering his nets after a morning at sea. A perky black and white dog runs up from the beach to greet the market owner as he opens his doors for business. Nearby a group of young men lazily lounge under the protection of a giant green monkey-ear tree. And whizzing by on a bright blue bike is a smiley young woman dressed in canary yellow balancing a basket of rosy fruit on her head. The vision of color is extraordinary and contrasts dramatically against the backdrop of turquoise waters. Later, when back in her stateside studio in Cashiers, North Carolina, Shari puts her Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd oils to work on canvas, transmuting her pencil
drawings into vivid depictions of island living. Like her favorite artists, Dutch impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, German-American colorist Wolf Kahn, and American visual artist Alice Neel, Shari’s work as a figurative colorist exploits the human form using imagination and visual license.“I think I was born an artist,”confides Shari. Ever since she was a child, she was drawing. “I have about fifty to sixty [sketchbooks] filled with mostly figures.” Coming from a long line of creative talent, with grandmothers as artists and parents as professional comedians, Shari’s passion for the arts was nurtured and coaxed from a young age. After partnering with Dick Van Dyke in the 1940s to produce and perform a popular stage act called “The Merry Mutes," her father Phil Erickson and mother Nancy opened the first cabaret dinner theater in Atlanta called Wit’s End. Watching from the wings of the stage and interacting with performers, animators, writers, and producers, Shari discovered a fondness for vibrancy and flourish as seen in the entertaining stage productions. Shari’s pursuits as an artist drew her to Ringling College of Art & Design in

Sarasota, Florida, where she graduated with honors. It was a pivotal point in her life where her passion for color was revealed in her first paintings. Although she was encouraged by her teachers to “explore grey” and to follow her fellow students in painting realism, Shari’s intuition led her down a different path. “Bright color has always appealed to me. The first time I traveled to the Caribbean, I knew my color sense had found a home.” Shari says she was “beguiled by the magical, unsinkable islands.” It was in 1979 when the enchanting Caribbean, full of saturated color and island vibes, drove her passion for pigment on canvas alla prima style (applying colors wet-on-wet) to achieve greatness as a contemporary painter. For the next forty years, she and her husband, acclaimed architectural artist D.K. Gifford with whom she had a love-at-first-sight connection

at Ringling, explored the tropics together. Visiting island after island in the West Indies, from the Abacos to the Virgin Islands, Shari found inspiration on canvas with the juxtaposition of light and color. Mixing and experimenting with pigments, her happy vision and ability to see the world differently enabled her to produce sought-after originals. “Erickson’s uncluttered island vignettes are characterized by an assured use of color, an elemental grasp of human movement, and her deceptively straightforward painting style that achieves an elegant simplicity,”says This Week in St. Thomas. A darling of many international and Southeastern US galleries, Shari’s tropical works of art have caught the eye of many prominent magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post where her piece Pretty in Pink made the May/June 2019 cover. “I was honored to be in such good company,” she states humbly. In addition, the US Department of State selected several of her paintings as part of the prestigious Art in Embassies Program, giving her art the opportunity to be displayed around the world, creating cultural awareness

of island life. Her tropical designs have reached broad depths across multiple mediums, including textiles, jewelry, and pottery. As talented as she is in tropical topics, she is also widely known on the Cashiers-Highlands Plateau for her work with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and her original commissioned pet portraits. Most everyone on the Plateau would recognize one of her most famous portraits, a dog with a paper bag on its head titled The Ugly Dog which is prominently hung at The Ugly Dog Pubs in Highlands and Cashiers. At home on Terrapin Mountain along with her husband and pets, she finds great comfort at her studio in the woods among the Great Smoky Mountains. “What could possibly be more inspiring than a gray winter day to bring out the raw bright-colored palette?” she asks. You can browse, purchase, or commission Shari’s work via her websites islandstudio.com with “the largest online collection of original Caribbean paintings” and ericksonpets.com. Her studio is also open by appointment.

LOCAL An encounter with a northern goshawk inspired Peter Kipp as a young boy.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MONGOLIA SOME 3,000 YEARS AGO, falcons and other birds of prey were essential to feeding kingdoms. Originally adopted by the Great Khans, the practice of falconry as a means of hunting was not the task of just a few handlers, but rather required an estimated 5,000 trappers and more than 10,000 falconers to keep the feathered game hunters in line and the food chain flowing, according to the International Association for Falconry. This ancient nomadic sport was the main form of hunting for food across the globe for centuries and was an essential part of our ancestors’ existence before the discovery of gunpowder. Eventually becoming a means of sport for the aristocracy and upper classes, falconry, also known as hawking, was an art passed down through generations. Becoming a falconer is no easy feat with intense training, practice, and an untold sense between handler and bird. Although some may think this mysterious art is lost, it is very much alive today with an estimated 4,000 falconers in the United States, including one in our own backyard. Meet Peter Kipp, a North Carolina Master Falconer and co-founder of Curtis-Wright Falconry. At the age of eight, Kipp knew his life’s ambition after a startling encounter with a northern goshawk one afternoon in the forest on his family’s property in Connecticut. Protecting a nest nearby, the raptor descended upon Peter, wings spread wide and making all sorts of vocal commotion, attempting to ward him off. “As a little boy, everything seems gigantic,” recalls Kipp. “I remember standing frozen in place as this huge noisy bird stood fifteen feet away from me.
I immediately noticed its flaming red eyes.” And the blood-red eyes and intimidating bird never left his thoughts according to Kipp. “Later when my father got home, he helped me look the bird up in our bird book.” Upon urging from his father, Kipp’s calling became his passion with hours of studying. Four years later he caught his first juvenile red-tailed hawk from the wild— a ritual of becoming a falconer. In 1972 his family moved to Highlands and at fourteen Kipp apprenticed with Dr. Herbert Koepp-Baker, a founder of the North American Falconers Association and pastor at the local Episcopal church. Koepp-Baker sponsored Peter in his quest of becoming a master falconer, a very rigorous process of testing and handling in a highly regulated sport. He achieved his goal in 1981 and has been educating laymen ever since about these distinguished creatures and the art of falconry. Kipp and his own falconry apprentice, Jeff Curtis, started Curtis-Wright Falconry in 2015 — one of only twenty or so operations in the United States federally licensed for falconry education. “We educate people not only about the great history of falconry, the equipment, feeding, housing, and training of the birds but also how to handle and fly them,” describes Kipp. “I try to make a connection between birds of prey and all of nature. Birds of prey are awesome, cool and fun, but no more important than the mouse, grass, or the tree. In nature, everything has its perfect place and purpose.” Kipp’s relationship with the birds is inspiring to watch for those who get the chance to see them in action. with his stories, and you can’t help but be appreciative of his experience and knowledge of falconry. “It is a hands-on experience,” beams Kipp, excited to introduce you to his two Harris’s hawks, four-year-old Sweetie Boy and ten-year-old Syrah, plus his latest juvenile peregrine falcon in training, Venus, and twoyear-old Rufus, a red-tailed hawk. He spends hours a day working with these veteran birds and training the new ones. To see Kipp’s raptors up close and personal,

fans rave about their experience with these well-tamed magnificent creatures. One of Kipp’s fans, Vanessa Steele, treated a group of friends to a falconry outing with him last year. “I wanted to offer my friends an experience of empowerment and maybe even help them face a fear of these wonderful majestic birds. It was a magical day, and Peter is an amazing storyteller.” A small-group falconry encounter is ideal for today’s environment and allows people to

get outside in nature. Kipp recounts a recent group of guests he entertained recently, a family of five with three children aged ten and under. The two oldest children jumped at the chance to handle a bird, but the youngest, a five-year-old girl, shied away from the opportunity. That is until she watched her older siblings have so much fun. She finally asked if she could handle the one-and-a halfpound Sweetie Boy. Once she called Sweetie Boy to her glove she asked to do it again, and multiple times thereafter. “In my opinion,
fear is the greatest enemy to mankind,” says Kipp. “So to watch a child overcome his or her fear is a beautiful thing.” A few hours spent outdoors in an open field bonding over nature’s bounty, getting a fascinating education in the ancient art of falconry and witnessing these amazing birds in action is an unforgettable experience. For more information, visit CurtisWrightOutfitters.com, or for a falconry outing in the Highlands/ Cashiers area, call Peter Kipp directly at 828553-5063.

THE SILVER LINING A CONVERSATION WITH OWNER/PRESIDENT, JOCHEN LUCKE by Kristin Bowen
W
ith the novel coronavirus looming over us like a black cloud, the question on everyone’s mind is "When will we ever get back to normal?" While social distancing and Safer-at-Home orders are physically keeping us from family and friends, events, and travel, we now have more time to contemplate our future. With our global economy shaken, many of us on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau are wondering particularly about real estate. How will our property values be affected and what does the time ahead hold for homeownership in our unique market? In an effort to answer these questions and reflect on the current state of the local real estate market, I sat down with Jochen Lucke, president of Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Well-respected for his vision and success, Jochen’s outlook can serve as a real-time monitor in these unprecedented times. KB: Understandably these are tough times with monumental habitual shifts across the board caused by the coronavirus. How are you and your team at Silver Creek addressing your clients’ needs and conducting business? JL: First of all, we are so grateful for all of the people doing their part to combat this virus. We want our customers and community safe, so it’s imperative that people abide by the state and local orders to stay at home until it is deemed safe to move around. I am incredibly thankful for our dedicated team of twelve brokers who continue
to work with all of our clients during these most challenging times. From their homes, they assist our buyers and sellers by showing property virtually, negotiating contracts and closing transactions. At Silver Creek Real Estate Group, honesty, integrity, respect, and friendship are much more than words. Our clients are like family, and although at the time of this interview we need to physically keep our distance, our continued success is built on mutually beneficial, long-term relationships. KB: Knowing the summer and fall months draw thousands of visitors and part-time residents to our small mountain communities to play, relax, and enjoy the cooler temperatures, how quickly do you think we will see our friends and those looking at property return to the area? JL: While I wish I had a crystal ball to know exactly when we will see visitors and residents returning to our majestic mountains again, I strongly feel this market will recover to a state of normalcy fairly quickly. I think it is safe to say that once restrictions are relaxed, traveling by car will be the logical choice for some time. With the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau only a few hours' drive from several metropolitan areas, I believe we may see an influx of buyers once our area is given the okay to move around again. I think people will wish to be away from crowds and want to escape city life, making our smalltown atmosphere set among mountains and national forests an ideal spot to call home, whether it be permanently or part-time. website is an advantageous tool available to them now and our brokers will be here when they are ready to buy. KB: What are the current conditions of the real estate market? Is this a good time to sell? JL: While every circumstance is different, we believe that this is a very good time to market a property. With the large number of individuals staying at home waiting out this virus, those interested in buying have time on their hands to search for properties online. Our company is fortunate to offer an award-winning website at ncliving.com that is aimed to pique buyer curiosity and emotionally engage them using three mediums of striking visual promotion – worldclass photography to spark interest, vibrant video to capture the mood and feel of the property, and 3D virtual home tours. This platform enables buyers to really get a feel for the communities and the properties. We think this is the reason our site has seen a 34% increase in user traffic from February 1st to April 18 over the same period last year, while some other national portals have seen a decrease of 30% in the month of March. KB: Three-dimensional technology is pretty cutting edge and most people may not be familiar with it. Please share more about this technology and how it is useful for marketing a home. JL: Being a market leader, our company knows we have to stay at the forefront of technology. We also know people don’t just buy property, they buy lifestyles. With emotionally driven content using aerial drone footage, high-quality photography and interior video, our website, which won the coveted award for Best Real Estate Website in the Country by International Property Awards, creates the ultimate buyer experience in a virtual environment. A website empowered with 3D technology gives our buyers the opportunity to walk through a home inside and out from the comfort of their own living room. This digital 36 S ILVE R C R EEK REA L ESTATE G R O UP
platform saves time in the long run by allowing buyers to narrow down properties of interest before visiting the properties physically— which is important in today’s times. They can view a home from all angles and even access digital floor plans. When they find a property or properties that intrigue them, they can make immediate inquiries, as well as quickly share content with friends, family, and designers. KB: How do your clients like this technology and how does it set you apart from other agencies? JL: Our clients love it! Using this technology successfully for a number of years now, we hear our clients’ positive feedback and see the results. Statistics show 3D virtual walk-throughs produce 95% more phone inquiries about property and 49% more qualified leads. It is also a useful tool for buyers’ interior designers who can proactively use the floor plans and measuring tools to lay out furniture for their clients’ new homes. In addition to our website, we offer buyers a comprehensive marketing package that dominates across all fronts in digital, social, and print channels. This total package goes far beyond what other agencies offer buyers and sellers. KB: Do you see glimmers of hope moving forward? JL: One thing we know for sure is that our country is amazingly resilient. We know this will pass in time and everyone can get back to a life of some normalcy. With each passing day, the light at the end of the tunnel gets a little bit brighter. In terms of real estate, we’ve seen over the last number of years solid growth in both the number of transactions and total sales volume. Now in combination with low-interest rates plus low inventory in certain neighborhoods and price ranges, the market is ripe. When the time is right, we look forward to welcoming our seasonal residents back to the mountains as well as those who want to visit and maybe call this special place “home.”

Wine Down A veritable wine lovers' playground can be found in The Land of the Long White Cloud.
by Kristin and Fred Bowen
WALKING OFF THE PLANE INTO A their wine in our own country. Unfortunately, January summer confirmed we had landed in the Southern Hemisphere. It is no easy feat traveling halfway around the world but after months of planning, we were giddy just to have arrived. My husband and I were finally fulfilling our dream and starting a five-week, 2,500-mile self-guided driving tour of the magnificent country of New Zealand.
To explore the North and South Islands of New Zealand is to experience notes of British Columbia, California, Hawaii, and Scotland all in one trip. The list is long for what you can see and do in one country. When it comes to describing its captivating landscape, there are not enough adoring adjectives. The soaring mountain ranges—many with snowcapped peaks, the skyscraper-high waterfalls, and the Caribbean-blue lakes left us breathless. Forever imprinted on our minds were the five-feet-tall ferns populating the rainforest floor, the thousands of miles of rugged coastline peppered with gorgeous beaches, and the slowly receding glaciers. Amidst spectacular sightings of dusky dolphins, yellow-eyed penguins, and sperm whales during the day, it was the eye-popping night sky that would dazzle us to sleep with its endless sprawl of glittering jewels and constellations. And then there is the cherished New Zealand wine country—amazing viticultural regions on both islands that are near and dear to oenophiles like us. With so much to write about a country like New Zealand, the wine country often gets overlooked by travel writers. One would think that with over 1,000 miles of wine regions and approximately 500 wineries nationwide, we would hear about and see more of
usually the most we can hope for in wine shops and restaurants is New Zealand’s number one exported wine, Sauvignon Blanc. However, there are many other excellent wines made in New Zealand, typically in smaller quantities, but the Kiwis save this well-kept secret for themselves.
New Zealand is a food and wine lovers’ playground and supports its own industry of farmers, and the wine country is at the center of this. The wine regions are easily accessible from most major cities, but in case time does not allow you to visit all of the regions, just know they are well represented on the menus of local restaurants and cafes. Here are some standouts straight from our travel journal:
NORTH ISLAND Waiheke Island Surrounded by the crystalline waters of the
Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island has a seductive vibe amongst rolling hills, wide sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and layers of subtropical bush. Escapees from the North Island’s biggest city of Auckland and knowledgeable travelers take the 40-minute ferry ride to seek its sunny and relaxed atmosphere, sweet and buttery oysters, and sensational wines. With a nickname of “Wine Island” and twenty winery tasting venues, aka “cellar doors,” you can keep quite busy sipping your way around Waiheke’s 36 square miles. The mineral-rich, volcanic terroir produce a bevy of outstanding grape varietals like syrah, pinot gris, chardonnay, petit verdot, Montepulciano, and Bordeaux. NC L IVI NG S PR ING 2020 39

You’ll find mostly small-batch producers on the island, but if you want to go big, stop in at Tantalus, a maker of both beer and wine. With a happening lunch spot and tasting lounge, they challenge the traditional with their crisp chardonnay uniquely made using the concrete egg method. The family winemaker, Podere Crisci, is sure to bring Italy to mind with its old-world style wines, Peroni beer on tap, and bocce ball games out back. Most visitors opt to spend time here relaxing over an al fresco lunch in their garden hemmed in by pretty gardens of olive and Italian cypress trees. If your palate is craving oysters just plucked from the sea, then Kennedy Point Winery’s stunning views and pinot gris will suit. Or step into France with a Provençal style rosé at the cellar door of Frenchman Hill Estate. With so many wineries on the island, a wine tour is a good option to sit back, relax and sip. For self-guided tours, electric bike rentals by E-Bike Waiheke offer an energetic way to get some exercise, take in the scenery, and find cellar doors along the way.
Hawke Bay (previously called Hawke’s Bay) Founded in 1851, Hawke Bay on the North Island is New Zealand’s oldest wine-producing region and now the second largest with over 90 wineries. Marked by a long, warm growing season with plenty of sunny days and cool ocean breezes, it is a vigneron’s and oenophile’s paradise. The region is blanketed with revered cellar doors and equally outstanding winery-owned restaurants set in pretty gardens or overlooking lengths of manicured vines. The famous subregion called Gimblett Gravels is known for its Bordeaux style reds and syrah, while other notable varietals include pinot noir, chardonnay, rosé and a bevy of aromatic whites. A visit to Church Road Winery will show what one winery’s vines can do with an outstanding portfolio to include blanc de blanc bubbles, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc and a cabernet that will imprint upon your palette forever. Sipping
the award-winning La Phant Rouge by Elephant Hill over a sublime lunch on a hot day stirs the senses to the point you’ll want to send home a case. New Zealand’s first winery, the historic Mission Estate, makes an old vine semillon worth tasting, and a relaxing lunch here will make a lasting impression. Getting there: fly from any of New Zealand’s major cities to the art deco city of Napier
SOUTH ISLAND Marlborough If you are familiar with one of New Zealand’s wine regions, Marlborough is likely it since it produces two thirds of the country’s wine and exports most of it. Located in the northeast corner of the South Island, over 200 vineyards cover the region, with the majority outputting world-class sauvignon blanc, as well as outstanding pinot noir, rosé, pinot gris, pinot grigio, chardonnay, and even gewürztraminer. Thirty cellar doors offer daily wine flights including the big box estate, Brancott, producing around four million cases a year. One of our favorites is the most awarded winery in New Zealand, the intimate Villa Maria. Nautilus Estate, known for its refreshing, fruit-forward albariño, is a stop to put on your tour. With so many cellar doors grouped closely together along the venerable Golden Mile, it is easy to navigate a comprehensive tour over just a couple of days. We prefer the easy-going self-guided bicycle tour with Wine Tours by Bike. Lunch options are plentiful with multi-course lazy dining experiences at local favorites like Wairau River or Allan Scott. As an alternative, arrange a picnic hamper from BV Gourmet in Blenheim to pair with a luscious bottle of chilled bubbles from No. 1 Family Estate. And definitely have lunch or a snack at Cloudy Bay matched with a cool bottle of sauvignon blanc with sweet and succulent Cloudy Bay clams from Marlborough’s shores. Getting there: arrive in Picton via ferry or fly from any of New Zealand’s major cities to Blenheim NC L IVI N G S PR ING 2020 41

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Most cellar doors do not require a reservation unless you are a large group, otherwise, they are generally open seven days a week from 11-6. Some tastings are free while most cost $5-10 New Zealand, however, the fee is waived if you buy at least a bottle, which you will find yourself doing frequently.
Waipara Valley, also known as North Canterbury This wine-growing region is one to watch. Located less than an hour from Christchurch, it is fast growing with serious vintner talent at the helm. Originally planted in 1978 and producing 3% of the New Zealand wine yield, you will now find more than 25 boutique wineries here. The vines in this area respond well to the hot summer sun and cooler nights enabling makers to grow dry riesling, pinot noir, and chardonnay. Favorite tasting rooms include Pegasus Bay (called “Outstanding” by Robert Parker’s Guide), Black Estate, Waipara Hills, and Greystone Winery. Getting there: tours originate out of Christchurch
Central Otago We “wine down” our trip in Queenstown, a diamond on the South Island, which sits on the edge of the eye-popping Lake Wakitipu surrounded by The Remarkables, a dramatic snowcapped mountain chain. The Central Otago region with six grape-growing subregions is New Zealand’s highest elevation wine area and the world’s southernmost. Not even a week spent here allows enough time to visit all of the tasting rooms. We took five days to explore just the famous subregion called Gibbston Valley, a.k.a Valley of the Vines, known for its legendary pinot noir with deep layers of well-rounded character and complexity challenging even the best New World pinots found in the U.S. Surprisingly clean varietals like chardonnay and dry riesling are also produced here and contribute 30% of the region’s total wine production. Prize-winning small-batch producers like Chard Farm, Amisfield Winery & Bistro, Peregrine, Gibbston Valley Winery, Brennan, and newcomer Wet Jacket are fan favorites. With a bold entrepreneurial spirit and a firm belief that real estate is in his blood, Jochen Lucke has spent over two decades building his reputation as a skilled realtor, broker, contractor and developer — first in Southeast Florida and now on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. His love of the mountains, paired with his love of family and community, brought Jochen to Western North Carolina. The decision to leave the sweltering heat and stressful environment of Fort Lauderdale for the cool, clean air and laid-back atmosphere of Cashiers was an easy one. Since making the move, he has become deeply involved in the community, currently serving on the board of the Cashiers Community Fund. He is also past Chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards, and served on the boards of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. When he’s not hard at work at the Silver Creek Real Estate Group offices, Jochen can be found on the golf course or croquet lawn or dining in one of the area's fine restaurants. Jochen is devoted to the Silver Creek credo of Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams. Whether you are looking for your vacation home, your primary residence or your dream estate, Jochen and his team of brokers are committed to finding the ideal property to fit your vision. Jochen has a firm grasp on the local real estate market while always keeping an eye on national trends. He has an innate understanding of the practice of purchasing and selling properties, both as a broker and a developer. He attributes much of his success to his tenacity and has negotiated and closed many deals that others might have walked away from. Jochen truly enjoys real estate and development and finds great rewards in the accomplishment of finding the perfect home for his clients. Jochen is licensed in both North Carolina and Florida.
"We have used Jochen Lucke twice for the purchase and sale of our home. He is very professional and takes care of every detail. I would not hesitate to recommend him and Silver Creek Real Estate Group for any real estate transaction. He is the best Realtor my wife and I have ever used." - STEVE BLAND
“Very professional. Jochen guided us throughout the sale and as we approached closing he anticipated our questions and had all the answers. His staff was courteous knowledgeable and the office is very well organized. A very professional operation that clearly focused on our interests throughout the sale. We will definitely use Silver Creek for all of our future real estate needs in the Cashiers area." - BILL AND DAPHNE H.

Dan quickly began building a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional. His success is largely based on his innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, just as he was drawn here many years before. A major advocate for animals and the environment, Dan is deeply involved in his community, serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and supporting the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is also an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors, North Carolina Board of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. He is SFR-certified and has become well-versed in the intricacies of short sales, foreclosures, and REOs. Dan brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive attitude, local knowledge, and proven dedication make him a terrific listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, he spends much of his time off with his own family and friends. He can easily be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake or volunteering. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.
"Dan is a great realtor as well as an upstanding member of the community. He works hard for his clients and gives back to the Cashiers with selfless volunteer work. He has a thorough knowledge of everything real estate, is a good listener and well as communicator. I found him to be personable and professional. Using Dan Allen as an agent is absolutely the best choice." - DENISA PALINKAS "My husband and I met Dan Allen and his assistant Kathryn over coffee at my son's home in Cashiers, NC, which Dan had sold to my son. The informal conversation provided our first glimpse of Dan as very knowledgeable about the area as well as thoroughly professional, while also personable and approachable. He learned from us just what we cherished about our cabin and property in a cove; in short, we are hikers, tubers, explorers, and flower, tree, and and bird observers. With this understanding, Dan showed and then sold our home to a couple who could envision the same hobbies for themselves. He and Kathryn expedited the sale in less than three months with excellent up-to-the-minute communication back and forth among all parties. Dan's professionalism throughout the process provided an optimism that was the order of the day." - KINTZ

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin was fortunate his family had the good sense to escape the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida summers and vacation in the cool mountain air of Western North Carolina. Spending time in the Highlands-Cashiers area since he was a young boy lead to a genuine appreciation for the miles of hiking trails, gentle lakes, and towering waterfalls, all of which add to the allure of the Plateau landscape. After graduating from college, Kevin struck out for the open plains of the West where he spent the next six and a half years developing and managing multiple companies in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota. After enduring numerous long winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong and, after marrying his wife Lindsey in June of 2019, they moved permanently to the Highlands-Cashiers area. Once settled in their new home, Kevin obtained his North Carolina real estate license with the goal of sharing his love of Plateau-style living. When not advocating for the lifestyle, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, fishing, kayaking, playing a round of golf, or simply sitting on the back deck admiring the views.

She was the first Broker in Charge at Highlands Cove Development (now Old Edwards Club). Carol’s expertise in commercial and residential development and investment opportunities on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau makes her a unique asset to any real estate client. Her vast knowledge of the real estate market encompasses private communities, farms and land, high-end luxury homes and the small weekend refuge. Carol’s business principle is to build lasting relationships and provide exceptional service to her clients with ethics, loyalty and integrity. Whether you are purchasing a new or existing home or looking for investment property, Carol will work hard to make the transaction a smooth and rewarding process. There have been many changes in this mountain area since she first moved here in 1986, but one thing remains the same — Highlands and Cashiers are still the best places in the world to live. Home is where the heart is, and Carol’s heart is here on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. She delights in helping others find a special place to hang their hearts here in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Carol has served on the Highlands Cashiers Board of Realtors, Highlands Mountaintop Rotary Club, Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, and P.E.O. She received her Resort and Second-Home Property Specialist Certification in 2017.
“When our family decided to look at a home in the Cashiers/Highlands/Sapphire area we were put in touch with Carol Mathews. Initially, we weren’t sure exactly what our timing was or where to look, and Carol said, 'No problem.' Not only was she willing to be flexible and work with us, she found out about our family, our interests and our needs to make sure we looked at the right homes. Once we decide which home to buy she helped us with the entire process, communicated often, and made the entire process very easy. I'd recommend Carol to anyone looking to move or buy in the area.” - JON H.

Eddy McDonald's lifelong passion and talent for golf led him to a career as a PGA professional. After relocating from Destin, Florida for a position at Highlands Falls Country Club in 1995, Eddy fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and knew he'd found home. Looking to follow his interest in development, Eddy embarked on his real estate career at Highlands Cove (now Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove), where he spent 13 years helping to grow Highlands Cove from its first home to the community it is today. Eddy's knowledge of the area and passion for building relationships with his buyers and sellers have been major factors in his success. He believes in going above and beyond to assist his real estate clients, providing them with a superior level of service and the resources to make informed decisions. Eddy enjoys spending time with his young daughter, Sara. They can be found on the golf course, hiking trails, or simply out exploring the natural beauty of the Highlands-Cashiers area.
“...Eddy is a fabulous realtor. He has been responsible for our rental home for the last year and has increased our rentals by 200%! He knows marketing and internet advertising. He is always available and responsive to our needs and those of the renters. He has what it takes to make an excellent agent - friendly and smart, a strong work ethic, and salesmanship.” - JOE AND MARY S.
“Eddy is a busy professional, yet he was always extremely responsive in person, phone, or text, making the process of buying this home from another state seamless. Without a doubt, we found and purchased our home in Cashiers because Eddy was our broker. Both before and after the closing Eddy has gone far beyond what was actually required. Thank you, Eddy McDonald, for being such a great person, professional, and realtor!” - J.S.
"We had the extreme pleasure of working with Eddy in the recent purchase of our home in Cashiers. Eddy quickly sensed what we were looking for and arranged a nice variety of homes for us to see. Even after the sale was done, Eddy has graciously continued helping us , including suggesting contractors for some renovations and coordinating their comings and goings from our new home. She has extensive knowledge of marketing, technology, and the greater Sapphire and Cashiers market and has earned a reputation among agents as someone who is hardworking and extremely competent. Her sense of responsibility to her clients and attention to detail make her an asset to anyone looking to buy or sell property in the area. Cassie is an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and currently serves as a director on the MLS Board. She has also served on the Technology Committee in the past. Her National Association of Realtors Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification has proven to be beneficial in the many short-sale, foreclosure, and REO transactions she has closed over the years. When Cassie isn’t working with clients, she is spending time with her family. She also enjoys camping, tennis, boating, dining out with friends, and of course, shopping! Her down-to-earth personality, perseverance and willingness to go the extra mile make her a great addition to Silver Creek Real Estate Group.
"Cassie was great for us. After seeing three properties, my wife and I totally flip-flopped on what we wanted to see. She didn’t miss a beat, and we found our house an hour later. She facilitated negotiations and closing from three different locations flawlessly. We really liked her." - WILLIAM WARD AND ROBIN ALLEN
"To anyone buying or, in particular, selling a home in the Sapphire Valley area, you will not find a broker that will work harder for you. We had our home on and off the market a couple of times over the past two years and experienced minimal activity. With Cassie things really began to click. Due to her marketing efforts showings increased dramatically. Homes only sell when they’re shown to enough potential buyers. She does the little things that make her successful and gets you as a seller results. For example, with cooler weather approaching and us away, we winterize the home. Cassie would take the time to go by ahead of showings, turn on the water and hot water heater, adjust the home temperature to a comfortable level and make sure all was in good order, and then put all back as we left it. She went over and above our expectations based on prior experience. Can’t say enough about her professionalism, courtesy, integrity and work ethic ... a real pro and a joy to work with." - GAIL AND ROD BRAZZELL 6 6 S ILVE R C R EEK REA L ESTAT E G R O UP

where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land for the home of their dreams. The home was intended to be their second residence until Chuck's retirement. But the lure of the Blue Ridge Mountains soon prompted the Selfs to realize that it was time to say goodbye to the intense pace, traffic and heat of Atlanta, and after the construction of their new home was completed, Chuck and Ann settled in permanently to enjoy the simplicity and splendor of mountain living. Prior to selling real estate, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, working most recently as Vice President of Sales for both Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta. Spending a moment with Chuck reveals his passion for everything this area has to offer. He finds tremendous satisfaction in matching his clients with their dream mountain home or home site. Chuck also enjoys golf, tennis, hiking, biking, boating on Lake Glenville, and any other reason he can think of to be outdoors. Even the dark night beckons him outside to gaze at the beautiful star-filled sky, bringing back cherished childhood memories so easily forgotten while living in the big city. Chuck is an active member of the Cashiers-Highlands community, having served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cashiers, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. Chuck’s wife, Ann, is a United Methodist Minister and also serves as the Executive Director of The Village Green in Cashiers—the 13.2-acre park at the center of town. Chuck and Ann look forward to their visits to the mountains from their daughter who lives in Atlanta, and their son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons who reside in Nashville.

Our experience with Chuck proved to be easy and pain-free. He sold our house DAYS after we listed with him. After interviewing other agents, we chose Chuck because we felt like he would work hard to get our property sold ... he did just that and also became a dear friend in the process. Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
