A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

sk any of our brokers when they most love to be on the Plateau, and you’ll always hear the same thing: autumn. To say nothing of the most popular dramatic vistas, even ordinary roads are transformed into Instagram-worthy photo ops. Foggy mornings give way to clear, sunny afternoons that highlight the contrast between vibrant moss and yellow leaves. Fires are lit in fire pits, marshmallows are toasted, and bumpy squashes abound at every farmer’s market. As Labor Day approaches, the summer hubbub on the Plateau has yet to subside. Check out page 26 to see the remarkable gains the market has made during the second quarter. Quite honestly, it's beyond anything we could have imagined for this year. We have many qualified buyers eagerly waiting for their dream home to come on the market. If you decide to list your property during this period of unusally high activity, rest assured our brokers have not wavered in providing devoted, personalized service throughout the processes of listing, negotiating, and closing. I'm happy to announce that thanks to your support, our listing has been selected as a winner in the HGTV Ultimate House Hunt 2020, an annual online promotion held on HGTV.com that features extraordinary real estate listings. More than 1.5 million votes were cast! This is our second listing to win the HGTV Ultimate House Hunt. We’re proud to provide maximum exposure to all of our fine properties in innovative ways on a national scale. I hope you enjoy this fall edition of NC Living Magazine!

STAND UP STANDUP PADDLEBOARDING: THE BEST SPORT FOR FITNESS, FUN, AND SOCIAL DISTANCING

WORDS BY SHAUNA L. NOSLER According to the Outdoor Industry Association, the top reasons people participate in outdoor sports are to get exercise and stay physically fit, to be with family and friends, and to observe scenic beauty and be close to nature. All things considered, it’s no wonder that here in the U.S., standup paddleboarding is quickly becoming the most popular outdoor activity for first-time participants.

joint issues. And if you stay on the water long enough, it’s great for boosting endurance. But, while all these things are great, the sport isn’t a great cardio workout. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, even at top speed, the most experienced paddlers don’t get their average heart rate up high enough to be considered a true cardio sport. Regardless, it’s a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors either solo or with friends.

The physicality

The social aspect

Standup paddleboarding is a fairly easy sport that most anyone—young and old, novice and expert, extremely fit, and those just getting off the couch—can enjoy. It can be relaxing or taxing depending on what you put into it. SUP uses just about every part of your body from arms, neck, and shoulders to legs and core muscles for balance. And it’s low impact, making it the perfect choice for people recovering from an injury or those with

Once used more as a form oftransportation— it’s how Hawaiians used to travel from island to island—than a leisure apparatus, SUP has become a great way to spend an afternoon chilling with friends while being active at the same time. Bonus, because you’re already a good six feet away from your companions, it’s the perfect social activity for the times we're in.

THE BOARD There are electric boards, old-school wooden boards, inflatable boards, and carbon fiber boards. If renting, you’ll probably get the fiber board version which is nice and sturdy but inflatable ones offer more buoyancy, making them good for beginners. But, regardless of skill level, just be sure to be properly fitted for both board and paddles and know that smaller, narrower boards are more challenging. 6 Day-Trips Where You Can Get Your SUP On

SUP Essentials

There are all kinds of places where you can try standup paddleboarding; all you need is some kind of water source. But, if you want to get out of town for a bit, check out these six hot spots:

H2O: Yes, you’re going to be on the water for the day but you will get dehydrated, and bringing your own water is a far better idea than drinking what lies beneath your board.

Cape Fear River: New to SUP? Try a Cape Fear Adventures class. The trips begin in Lillington and can be as short as one hour or you can make it an all-day adventure. Bonus, they also rent kayaks, canoes, and more.

PFD: That’s right … even the most experienced SUPer outfits him or herself with a personal flotation device. Safety first!

Figure 8 Island Beaches: If sandbars and ocean air are your jam, then head over to Mason’s Inlet. A popular spot for both experts and novices, you can easily SUP for close to 10 miles and if that isn’t enough, you can double up with a run on the beach. Lake Glenville: A great spot for SUPing, fishing, and just about anything water-related. Located just north of Cashiers, the reservoir is the highest lake in the eastern U.S. and offers more than 25 miles of shoreline, three waterfalls, and plenty of crystalclear, cold water.

Sunscreen: Duh. Hat and Sunglasses: Protecting your head and eyes from the sun’s rays and the water’s glare will ensure you have an enjoyable time on and off your board. Water Shoes: Optional, but some people like to have their feet covered, especially if you’re heading to a river where the bottom can be rocky. Whistle: Speaking of safety, it never hurts to have something loud enough to alert others if need be— especially if you’re going solo.

Masonboro Island: A tranquil, nine-mile stretch of protected marshland with plenty of bird watching opportunities. Accessible via Trails End Park, Wilmington. Tuckasegee River: In the Great Smoky Mountains, you’ll find Bryson City Outdoors, a hip outdooroutfitter/brewpub/eatery offering everything from funky baseball hats to locally crafted beer to guided SUP tours in and around the river and Fontana Lake.

Harbor Island Loop: Known simply as “The Loop” to locals—this short circular course offers three and a half miles of calm water around Wrightsville Beach’s Harbor Island. The Nirvana OF FLY FISHING

WORDS BY KRISTIN BOWEN

The mountains of western North Carolina lure those far and wide seeking higher elevations, stunning views, waterfalls, and verdant forests. However, it is the copious streams, creeks, and rivers lying within these mountains that draw fly fishermen of all levels and skills, yearround. North Carolina’s waterways are abundant with wild or stocked rainbow, brown, and brook trout, as well as smallmouth bass in midsummer. When asked what attracts them to the sport, many fly fishermen find it hard to put into simple terms. The collective agrees there is no easy formula in making “the catch,” for an angler is challenged before even stepping into the water. The sport requires thought, instinct, and strategy. Great consideration goes into understanding the fish on that particular day, on that particular stream, since it varies day to day, stream to stream, season to season. Sometimes it varies hour to hour. One must consider the fish’s relationship with its environment, the weather, water temperature, level, and current. The answers are key in crafting a cunning approach to the day’s journey. “There is an art to fly fishing,” according to Ben Elmer, an avid fisherman, prominent local guide and manager at Brookings Anglers in Highlands. “The draw for me comes with chasing the fish and convincing them to eat my fly.” With tens of thousands of artificial flies to consider, wisely choosing a fly that best matches the current bug hatch creates a greater opportunity for this to happen. Equally as important to an aspiring fish catcher is mastering casting techniques where the fly mimics the actual habits of the “bug du jour.”

Elmer describes the scene on the river. An angler first strategically scopes out an ideal location where the fish might be found. He then chooses his fly, not just any fly, the right fly that will tempt the fish. After quietly wading into the water, he fortifies his stance, chooses his cast, and delivers his fly. Patiently he waits. Feeling camaraderie with nature and perhaps his fellow fisher friends nearby, he enjoys the whip and grace of his cast as his fly dances on the surface. There is no impatience in the wait as the rewards are great, and then suddenly, possibly many casts later, STRIKE! He hooks one. A rush of adrenaline courses through his veins as he works to keep the trout or bass on the line. His skill at properly setting the hook will hopefully secure the catch as the duel plays out. However, stalking and catching the fish is only part of the game. “It is not over until the fish is successfully in the net,” says Elmer, “and that is a challenge in itself.” Gail Bell, a ten-year veteran fly fisherwoman from Scaly Mountain, North Carolina says, “Fish are spooky and smart. Stealth is always your mantra. Imagine, now the fish has his choice from tens of thousands of natural food floating by. What are the odds he will choose your artificial fly? But when he does ... POW ... lights out awesomeness! It can be spiritual and technical with a little luck thrown in.” “You don’t have to catch a fish to have a good time,” Elmer shares like a secret. Fishermen vary in the experiences they seek. Some choose to float rather than wade, some want private over public waters, and some prefer to fish in the quiet winter months when they can

take their catch home. Finding a peaceful experience grounded in nature is ideal for some who want to “get away from it all,” while others seek the thrill of the chase. American author Norman MacLean who wrote A River Runs Through It equates fly fishing to a piece of music that slowly builds to an exciting crescendo. Maybe this metaphor best explains the growth of the sport and its captive audience of all genders and ages. Regarded as being meditative and therapeutic, restorative fly fishing retreats are plentiful and hosted by groups such as Casting Carolinas for cancer survivors and Project Healing Waters for military personnel and disabled veterans. Brookings Anglers, with locations in Cashiers and Highlands, is a trustworthy resource for finding the best experience. Their guided trips are a terrific way to learn, grow, and perfect techniques. In addition, they offer fly-tying courses, licenses, and full or half-day packages for individuals, couples, and groups. Packages start at $200.

Cast: This is the motion you make when you collectively ‘throw’ a fly rod, reel, and line. Delivery: Used to describe the action of casting the fly to a fish or into a promising-looking area of water. Dry Fly: Any fly fished upon the surface of the water, usually constructed of non-water-absorbent materials. Dry flies are most commonly used to imitate the adult stage of aquatic insects. Fly: A hand-tied artificial lure imitating natural insects or baitfish to entice fish. Fly Casting: A standard method of presenting a fly to a target using a fly rod and fly line. Forward (or Power) Stroke: In fly fishing, casting is a back-and-forth motion of the rod and line that allows you to place your fly where you’d like. Hatch: A large number of flies of the same species.
Matching the Hatch: An attempt by a fly angler to select an artificial fly that imitates the color, size, shape, and behavior of natural insects that fish are feeding on at a particular time. Often when a hatch occurs, fish become very selective and refuse insects that do not match the predominant insects

present. Mayfly: Commonly found in cold or cool freshwater environments, mayflies are the most commonly imitated aquatic insects worldwide. Roll Cast: This is a main cast every fly fisher should master. It can be used to cast short to medium distances - 15 to 30 feet of line. Setting the Hook: The act of pulling the hook into the flesh of the fish’s mouth. Stalking: The action of creeping up on a fish so as not to surprise or disturb it. Stance: The foot of the casting side should be back at roughly a 45-degree angle from the lead foot and about shoulder width apart. Right handed: right foot back. Left handed: left foot back. This stance allows your body to twist back and forth with the cast easily. Strike: The attempt a fish makes to eat a fly, successfully or not. This term also refers to the movement of the rod a fly angler makes to set the hook. Wet Fly: Any fly fished below the surface of the water; nymphs and streamers are wet flies.

ABOUT THE LAKE Bear Lake, also referred to as Bear Creek Lake, covers 500 acres and features 13 miles of shoreline. Bear Lake was created in the 1950s by damming the east fork of the Tuckasegee River to provide hydroelectric power for the area. Today, it is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Western North Carolina. Bear Lake is regularly stocked with fish by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. The area is also home to the Bear Lake Golf Club. The lake is remote enough that non-resident traffic is low, creating that 'private lake' feeling for the few residents surrounding the lake and those residing at Bear Lake Reserve. Bear Lake

Reserve has its own marina with day docks; lakefront property owners also have their own docks. Bear Creek Lake is large enough for kayaking, canoeing, day boating, water skiing, or just relaxing on those lazy days when you want to unwind. Located within minutes of the property are the Nantahala National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and the Appalachian Mountains. It is also less than an hour's drive to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

BEAR LAKE RESERVE Nestled in Western North Carolina's beautiful Tuckasegee Valley along the shoreline of Bear Creek Lake, the community of Bear Lake Reserve is a vacationer's paradise. Bear Lake Reserve marries the concepts of community, luxury, leisure, and nature together with amazing results. Whether you're seeking a mountain vacation home or a primary residence, Bear Lake Reserve has many options for the home buyer. Custom home sites are available on the shores of Bear Creek Lake or tucked away within the ancient forest that surrounds her. The twoto four-bedroom Craftsman-style cottages are offered in a variety of floor plans in many neighborhoods throughout the community – ideal for the growing family or empty nesters. The two- and threebedroom condominiums found at the Mountain Lodge offer aweinspiring views of the lake and easy access to the Lake Club.

THE LAKE CLUB The Lake Club, considered to be the crown jewel of Bear Lake Reserve, includes a lakefront pool, outdoor community hearth, theater room, fitness center, restaurant, and tavern. The Bear Lake Golf Club features a 9-hole, par 29 course by Nicklaus Design with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and valley below. The Amphitheatre at Golden Farm proves a picturesque spot for a wedding or summer concert. Bear Lake's Mill Pond Pavilion is a peaceful outdoor retreat framed by tall white pines, overlooking a mountain stream, trout ponds, and the ruins of an old springhouse. Family-friendly Bear Creek Park features open hearths for cooking or telling ghost stories in the firelight, babbling brooks for splashing, and a tipi and tree houses for exploring. There is no shortage of things to do at Bear Lake Reserve, but residents are always welcome to enjoy their time at the lake doing absolutely nothing at all.

on the water

WORDS BY KRISTIN BOWEN

Good Morning America and National Geographic Adventurer named Western North Carolina (WNC) the “#1 Vacation with a Splash.” While there is no ocean in WNC, there is plenty of water. Dotting the verdant mountainous terrain are pristine lakes, winding rivers, and big waterfalls. Quietly keeping watch high above these cool liquid bodies are the beloved Blue Ridge Mountains which are just as captivating as the waters they protect. Because of the region's diverse terrain, high elevation, and unusually high rainfall amounts feeding the rivers and lakes, water sport enthusiasts find plenty to do to whet their appetites along with clean air, abundant nature, and picturesque settings. From the latest trend of river snorkeling to thrill-seeking whitewater rafting, there is something for everyone. One of the most popular water sports is kayaking— a dynamic sport that can tilt low on the chill-ometer with quiet water or high on adrenaline with rough water.

Quiet Water It’s dawn when Steve Smolinski paddles out onto tranquil Lake Glenville to catch some wild animal eye-candy, a resident blue heron fishing for his breakfast. The mist that often blankets the water early in the morning slowly ascends as the cool air warms. With his dog manning the open cockpit in front of him, Steve’s sleek wooden kayak glides easily across the flat water as his paddle guides them to the best viewing spot. Made by his own hands not as a hobby but as an actual business, Steve prefers leisure kayaking for its relaxing nature. “The combination of the quiet and the serenity that accompanies sunrise coupled with fewer people

on the water make it the ideal time,” says Steve. “Over the years, we have seen deer, foxes, beavers, muskrats, turtles, and all kinds of birds along the shorelines. It is a great way to start the day.” Since 2002, Steve has been building wooden kayaks for touring, as well as sport, for himself and others. He finds this type of woodcraft is far more superior in handling and lighter weight lending to more efficiency on the water than plastic boats. As a certified builder of Pygmy wooden kayaks, Steve finds the demand in these boats is growing as more people get out on the water and in nature. Working from a kit, Steve meticulously completes one of these Pygmy crafts in about eighty hours. With curing time, delivery takes about six weeks. The investment starts at around $2,800 — not bad considering a well-maintained wooden kayak built by Steve can practically last a lifetime and provide hours upon hours of recreational fun. Steve also handcrafts paddleboards, canoes, and wherries. To contact Steve or to find out more about his services, go to srwoodenkayaks.com.

Whitewater Rafting/Kayaking Just a ways away from where quiet water is found, there are thundering waterfalls, rushing rivers, and another type of kayaking that tips the heart pumping scale, whitewater kayaking. This adrenaline-fueled sport is quite popular so there are plenty of outfitters and guides offering full and half-day trips to take on rough water. There are varying degrees of rapids in WNC, but Class III and higher are abundant. While managing rough water requires intense skill, concentration, and fearlessness, beginners

and intermediates can easily find an exciting outing that safely meets all levels of experience. Inflatable one- or two-person kayaks are the usual options. Popular spots include the French Broad, Nantahala, Tuckasegee (“the Tuck”), and Chattooga Rivers. Paddlers have plenty of options in both natural flow and dammed environments giving them the luxury of choice, space, and degree of difficulty. This is a wet sport so making sure to have the right gear and guide is key.

Being a Spectator Throughout the summer Duke Energy releases the Lake Glenville Dam creating huge whitewater flows in the west fork of the Tuckasegee River. Expert paddlers travel far and wide to take on the several miles of Class IV rapids. At their own risk, ambitious spectators can view this incredible sight via the High Falls hike near Lake Glenville’s sandy beach. For more information on the dam release schedule, visit Duke’s website at duke-energy.com.

With a bold entrepreneurial spirit and a firm belief that real estate is in his blood, Jochen Lucke has spent over two decades building his reputation as a skilled realtor, broker, contractor and developer — first in Southeast Florida and now on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

ABOUT ME

His love of the mountains, paired with his love of family and community, brought Jochen to Western North Carolina. The decision to leave the sweltering heat and stressful environment of Fort Lauderdale for the cool, clean air and laid-back atmosphere of Cashiers was an easy one. Since making the move, he has become deeply involved in the community, having served on the board of the Cashiers Community Fund. He is also past Chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards and served on the boards of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. When he’s not hard at work at the Silver Creek Real Estate Group offices, Jochen can be found on the golf course or croquet lawn or dining in one of the area's fine restaurants. Jochen is devoted to the Silver Creek credo of Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams. Whether you are looking for your vacation home, your primary residence or your dream estate, Jochen and his team of brokers are committed to finding the ideal property to fit your vision. Jochen has a firm grasp on the local real estate market while always keeping an eye on national trends. He has an innate understanding of the practice of purchasing and selling properties, both as a broker and a developer. He attributes much of his success to his tenacity and has negotiated and closed many deals that others might have walked away from. Jochen truly enjoys real estate and development and finds great rewards in the accomplishment of finding the perfect home for his clients. Jochen is licensed in both North Carolina and Florida.

"We have used Jochen Lucke twice for the purchase and sale of our home. He is very professional and takes care of every detail. I would not hesitate to recommend him and Silver Creek Real Estate Group for any real estate transaction. He is the best Realtor my wife and I have ever used." - STEVE BLAND

“There are real estate agents, and then there is Jochen Lucke. From the beginning of the search process until completion of our purchase, I have never worked with a realtor so committed to finding a home that fit our needs. His knowledge of the area allowed us to pinpoint specific homes to review, making our time with him much more efficient and comprehensive. He coordinated home inspections and all necessary steps during the diligence process, and even after we closed on our home purchase, Jochen was still readily available to answer any and all questions about things like power companies, preferred internet service providers and the like to streamline our move into the home. I could not be more satisfied with his representation of us, and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to find their perfect home." - JUSTIN PARK 5 8 S I LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R OU P

DAN ALLEN.

ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-508-2107

As a young boy growing up in Cary, North Carolina, Dan Allen fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau over the course of many summertime visits. In 1994, he was able to realize his lifelong dream when he moved here and set down roots at a mountaintop farm near Cashiers. Dan quickly began building a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional. His success is largely based on his innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, just as he was drawn here many years before. A major advocate for animals and the environment, Dan is deeply involved in his community, serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and supporting the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is also an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors, North Carolina Board of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. He is SFR-certified and has become well-versed in the intricacies of short sales, foreclosures, and REOs. Dan brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive attitude, local knowledge, and proven dedication make him a terrific listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, he spends much of his time off with his own family and friends. He can easily be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake or volunteering. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.

"Dan is a great realtor as well as an upstanding member of the community. He works hard for his clients and gives back to the Cashiers with selfless volunteer work. He has a thorough knowledge of everything real estate, is a good listener and well as communicator. I found him to be personable and professional. Using Dan Allen as an agent is absolutely the best choice." - DENISA PALINKAS "My husband and I met Dan Allen and his assistant Kathryn over coffee at my son's home in Cashiers, NC, which Dan had sold to my son. The informal conversation provided our first glimpse of Dan as very knowledgeable about the area as well as thoroughly professional, while also personable and approachable. He learned from us just what we cherished about our cabin and property in a cove; in short, we are hikers, tubers, explorers, and flower, tree, and and bird observers. With this understanding, Dan showed and then sold our home to a couple who could envision the same hobbies for themselves. He and Kathryn expedited the sale in less than three months with excellent up-to-the-minute communication back and forth among all parties. Dan's professionalism throughout the process provided an optimism that was the order of the day." - KINTZ

Village Realty in 2000. She has extensive knowledge of marketing, technology, and the greater Sapphire and Cashiers market and has earned a reputation among agents as someone who is hardworking and extremely competent. Her sense of responsibility to her clients and attention to detail make her an asset to anyone looking to buy or sell property in the area. Cassie is an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and currently serves as a director on the MLS Board. She has also served on the Technology Committee in the past. Her National Association of Realtors Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification has proven to be beneficial in the many short-sale, foreclosure, and REO transactions she has closed over the years. When Cassie isn’t working with clients, she is spending time with her family. She also enjoys camping, tennis, boating, dining out with friends, and of course, shopping! Her down-to-earth personality, perseverance and willingness to go the extra mile make her a great addition to Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

"Cassie was great for us. After seeing three properties, my wife and I totally flip-flopped on what we wanted to see. She didn’t miss a beat, and we found our house an hour later. She facilitated negotiations and closing from three different locations flawlessly. We really liked her." - WILLIAM WARD AND ROBIN ALLEN

"To anyone buying or, in particular, selling a home in the Sapphire Valley area, you will not find a broker that will work harder for you. We had our home on and off the market a couple of times over the past two years and experienced minimal activity. With Cassie things really began to click. Due to her marketing efforts showings increased dramatically. Homes only sell when they’re shown to enough potential buyers. She does the little things that make her successful and gets you as a seller results. For example, with cooler weather approaching and us away, we winterize the home. Cassie would take the time to go by ahead of showings, turn on the water and hot water heater, adjust the home temperature to a comfortable level and make sure all was in good order, and then put all back as we left it. She went over and above our expectations based on prior experience. Can’t say enough about her professionalism, courtesy, integrity and work ethic ... a real pro and a joy to work with." - GAIL AND ROD BRAZZELL 6 4 SI LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R O U P

where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land for the home of their dreams. The home was intended to be their second residence until Chuck's retirement. But the lure of the Blue Ridge Mountains soon prompted the Selfs to realize that it was time to say goodbye to the intense pace, traffic and heat of Atlanta, and after the construction of their new home was completed, Chuck and Ann settled in permanently to enjoy the simplicity and splendor of mountain living. Prior to selling real estate, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, working most recently as Vice President of Sales for both Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta. Spending a moment with Chuck reveals his passion for everything this area has to offer. He finds tremendous satisfaction in matching his clients with their dream mountain home or home site. Chuck also enjoys golf, tennis, hiking, biking, boating on Lake Glenville, and any other reason he can think of to be outdoors. Even the dark night beckons him outside to gaze at the beautiful star-filled sky, bringing back cherished childhood memories so easily forgotten while living in the big city. Chuck is an active member of the Cashiers-Highlands community, having served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cashiers, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. Chuck is currently serving on the board of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. Chuck and his wife are active members of Mountaintop Golf and Lake Club. Chuck’s wife, Ann, is a United Methodist Minister and also serves as the Executive Director of The Village Green in Cashiers—the 13.2-acre park at the center of town. Chuck and Ann look forward to their visits to the mountains from their daughter who lives in Atlanta, and their son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons who reside in Nashville.

“If you want a professional real estate agent to get the job done, list with Chuck Self. His integrity and level of work ethic are beyond any expectation you may have. Our experience with Chuck proved to be easy and pain-free. He sold our house DAYS after we listed with him. After interviewing other agents, we chose Chuck because we felt like he would work hard to get our property sold ... he did just that and also became a dear friend in the process. If we purchase another property in the Cashiers area, it will be with Chuck as our agent as we feel very comfortable with him at the helm. RAY TRINE.

ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-506-8520

Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

“My wife and I have moved many times in the last 30 years and dealt with a lot of agents. We have now dealt with Ray on many transactions and believe strongly that he is by far the best.
