Always striving to grow, improve, and evolve, broker Chris Duffy found the perfect home at Silver Creek. A quick quiz: Before he was a successful real estate professional with Silver Creek Real Estate Group, Chris Duffy was: a) A web designer and developer, b) An investigator, c) A morning radio host, or d) All of the above. If you answered “d,” then you are correct! Ever-curious with a thirst for knowledge, Chris explains—in his baritone radio voice—how each experience contributes to real estate sales success. “Having the facility with technology helps a lot, because real estate is becoming a highly technologydriven industry. I use my investigation skills when I need to ferret out details about a particular piece of property. And my on-air radio experience helps in communicating with clients, for example, when we’re working by phone because I’m used to communicating with someone I can’t see.” His voice may sound familiar. Until Christmas Eve of 2019, Chris was the morning show host on WHLC FM 104.5, broadcasting to listeners from the Highlands station as “the Voice of the Plateau.” The role brought him here from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he had lived for more than two decades. “Ottawa is a beautiful city,” he recalls. “But I’m really glad I don’t have six months of winter anymore.” Chris’ radio voice isn’t his only distinguishing feature. A towering presence at 6 feet, 9 inches tall, most people literally look up to him. The trait passed
to his 23-year-old twin sons; Anthony stands 6 feet, 9-and-a-half inches, while Gregory is 6 feet, 11 inches. Born in Germany (German is his first language and he has studied eight more), Chris grew up in Washington, D.C., where he attended the renowned Georgetown Day School. The last stage of his father’s government career was in foreign service, so Chris had extensive visits to Warsaw and Buenos Aires. Later, Chris attended Georgia Tech and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in criminology and criminal justice, which led to his work as an internal investigator for private companies in the D.C. area. After moving to Ottawa, where his sons were born, Chris took advantage of a Canadian program that provided support for skill specialization and entrepreneurship and created his web design and development company. “This was in the earlier days of website creation, and people thought I was literally a wizard,” Chris reflects. At one point, he was one of three in Canada to hold a high-level web development designation. After 10 years of success, Chris decided to pursue a lifelong interest in radio. He jumped in with both feet, enrolling full time in the radio broadcasting program at Algonquin College. Before graduating, Chris was on the air at an alternative rock station. Four years after graduation, he returned to Algonquin as a professor. When he decided to move back to the States, the

job posting by the Highlands station caught his eye and he quickly landed an interview. Drawing upon his investigative skills, Chris thoroughly researched the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau during the hiring process, knowing he would talk about it on the airwaves each morning. As his enthusiasm for the area grew, so did his desire to help others find their ideal Plateau home, and so he obtained his real estate license. He joined Silver Creek Real Estate Group in 2020. “Today, I use my voice and knowledge to be more of an evangelist for the Plateau,” he explains. “It’s an incredible lifestyle.” When he’s not helping clients, Chris is either behind the mic, volunteering his skills to call a Highlands High School basketball game, or in the kitchen. Perhaps no surprise, Chris is also a trained chef, having earned a certificate from Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa Culinary
Arts Institute. He displays his culinary talent at home with friends and when he’s hired as a private chef. Heavily inspired and influenced by Asian and Pacific Rim cuisine, Chris’ specialty is Japanese, multicourse, kaiseki-style dinners. “Japanese cooking is very appealing to me, because you can make these incredible dishes from a rather simple, discreet family of ingredients,” he explains. Chris’ commitment to continuous improvement and evolution is a great match for Silver Creek—and a key reason why he’s so satisfied with being part of it. “The company is never settled. We’re always moving forward. As a workplace, it’s never going to be boring or stagnant. We’re always improving. And Jochen drives that. To have that long-range vision is what sets us apart.” Chris recently answered a few questions for NC Living.
“
The more I learned about [Silver Creek] ... how they are always pushing to be better in every aspect of their business, I knew it was the place I had to be.
BROKER SPOTLIGHT
Why did you choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group? After getting my start in real estate, it quickly became apparent that Silver Creek had the best marketing of any real estate company on the Plateau. The more I learned about the firm, the way they work with clients, and how they are always pushing to be better in every aspect of their business, I knew it was the place I had to be. What are your goals for the next year/12 months? Simply put: Delivering dreams for my clients. What qualities differentiate you from other agents? Unlike many agents, I’d never worked in sales, so I don’t have a highly transactional approach. I view myself as an evangelist for the Plateau and a facilitator for those wanting to enjoy everything our area has to offer. How do you spend your free time? Cooking is a big part of my life. In 2005 I took a month off and did the intensive catering course at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa, receiving a Certificat de Traiteur. I have more than 350 cookbooks, and I’m about to embark on a blogging project to cook a recipe from every one of them. What is something that most people don’t know about you? I am in the music video for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s, “The House Is Rockin’.” It’s pretty easy to spot me; just look for the super tall guy. What is the most important thing someone should know before starting their search for a home on the Plateau? Understanding the different areas that make up the Plateau is key. For a relatively small geographic area, there is a lot of diversity in landscape, community make-up, and lifestyle. I’ve had clients who were interested in one area, but when I exposed them to another area that they didn’t know existed, they fell in love with it.
If someone is spending only a day on the Plateau, what would you say is the No. 1 thing they should do? Experience as much of the outdoors as they can, whether it be a hike to a stunning vista like Whiteside, Satulah, or Sunset Rock, a waterfall safari, or a stroll through the hidden gem just steps away from downtown that is the Highlands Plateau Greenway. What is your favorite season on the Plateau? Honestly, I just love having four seasons. Having moved from a place where it is winter for basically half the year, it’s wonderful to have distinct seasons, not just for the weather, but also the changes in the rhythm of life here. I appreciate the quieter times in the winter but also love the energy and buzz the summer brings. How do you give back to the Plateau community? Since 2017 I’ve been the in-game, public address announcer for Highlands High School basketball. Basketball games are a big deal in town, with residents whose kids have long grown and flown coming out to cheer on Highlands. When Blue Ridge School comes to play, it is standing room only. It’s great because, as opposed to my radio days, I can see the reaction of the crowd. I think the kids enjoy the pro aspect it adds, even if they sometimes question my musical choices. Where is your favorite place to travel and visit? I love Honolulu. It’s an American metropolis in a tropical paradise, and it’s just minutes away from some of the most primal and stunning landscapes in the world. The mix of cultures is incredible, and it is absolutely my favorite place to dine out. What is the last book you read or a book recommendation? I’m currently reading Anthony Bourdain’s World Travel: An Irreverent Guide, which was developed posthumously by his assistant, Laurie Woolever. It’s interesting to see the travel experiences he shared on television, in what is really his preferred medium of print.

1 tbsp. Hawaiian Alaea sea salt (no substitutions) 1 1/2 tbsp. sesame oil
1/4 cup diced Vidalia onion 1/4 cup chopped scallions
DIRECTIONS Cut the tuna into 1/2 inch cubes and mix well with the Alaea sea salt. Let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Combine the sesame oil, oyster sauce, and soy sauce, and mix it into the tuna. Add the onions and scallions and mix it well. To serve, garnish each portion with caviar, masago, tobiko, or other fish roe. Enjoy with chopsticks or serve with taro chips on the side.

his estate was aptly dubbed “Ushuata," a Cherokee term meaning “where the earth ends and dreams begin." No other phrase comes close to describing how it feels to enter its gates and step into a garden paradise surrounded by splendid views of the ancient Appalachians. Boasting one of the finest private gardens in the Southeast, the home sits jewel-like amid terraced gardens, which perfectly blend into the remarkable site and take full advantage of the views of Bald Rock and Lake Fairfield. Designed by the noted Meyer Greeson Paullin Benson architectural firm, the home was built by Dearl Stewart Construction and decorated by Amelia T. Handegan. The purchase of the home includes antiques from all over the world, including French, early Italian, Flemish, English, Swedish, Welsh, and British Colonial furniture; Oushak, Turkish, and Persian antique rugs; English, Italian, and Swedish paintings; and French and English mirrors. Mary Palmer Dargan conceived the landscape design, guided by the owner's desire to create a sustainable environment that integrates the gardens with the emerging architecture to produce a home environment that honors its setting. Along with native granite boulders, many tons of Tennessee fieldstone make up the meandering paths and stepping stones. Incorporating more than 500 species and varieties of trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and ferns, many of which are rare and choice, the garden's formal and naturalistic elements add continuous interest as the seasons unfold, from the spring trilliums and other wildflowers through to the splendid fall foliage. Even the winters offer stunning vignettes when the many dwarf conifers and sculptural stonework come to the fore. The gardens were planted and maintained to be a haven for wildlife, particularly birds and butterflies, with myriad sources of nectar. Many species of mountain swallowtails, fritillaries, buckeyes, and painted ladies complete the Edenic atmosphere of the garden. The property is also home to a wide variety of breeding birds, including warblers, vireos, hummingbirds, tanagers, bluebirds, and other songbirds. The water feature
is a magnet for migrating birds in the spring and fall when one can sit and watch the thirsty warblers descend for a drink. It also serves as a breeding site for green and wood frogs, as well as grey tree frogs, spring peepers, and salamanders. From the magnificent copper beeches that frame the front of the house to the elaborately layered woodland meander, the garden encompasses a richness of design and planting where texture, form, structure, and color all meld to create a whole greater than any individual element. Offered at $7,000,000. Visit ncliving.com/ listing/96952 to view the virtual tour and video.

is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, with backgrounds in art history, product marketing, and food and beverage. He has taken his love of bartending and hospitality to new heights with the founding of Farm2Cocktail, a cocktail mixer and freelance bartending company based in Rabun County, Georgia. The mixers he produces are called shrubs. Shrubs are a fusion of fresh fruits, herbs, sugar, and vinegars and were very popular during the colonial days in America. Carlton fell in love with their rich history and well-balanced sweet and tart flavor profile. They can be used to create cocktails, mocktails, and even dressings. "It's been nearly five years since I began making shrubs, initially as a bartender creating them for specialty cocktails and later to make extra cash bottling them at home for anyone expressing an interest." His brand is now firmly established and the mixers are sold nationwide. Carlton is dedicated to developing mixology-madeeasy products using all natural ingredients. His passion is to help bring out the confident mixologist in those who try Farm2Cocktail shrubs.

As they passed by the awning still bearing the Happ’s Place name, locals and visitors alike recalled Southern, family-style meals shared with loved ones, hoping its doors would one day open again. The iconic wagon wheels flanking the shuttered restaurant’s door seemed to be waiting and wondering, too. Enter Rex Farrior, a Tampa-based entrepreneur who saw the potential. A couple of years ago, he purchased the property and began creating its future. With deep family ties that go back to the area for decades, Rex understands the delicate balance between celebrating a new generation and preserving tradition.
“My grandparents were staples at High Hampton since the 1970s, and I’ve been blessed to have experienced Cashiers-Glenville most of my life,” says Rex. “I went to the Brown Skillet and remembered when it became Happ’s, which became our favorite.” When construction began in fall 2020, the project had developed into “a three-part compilation of Glenville history,” including the original 1960 building that had once housed the 40-seat restaurant, the historic Moody House that stood next door and dated to 1900, and the Oliver’s Lake Glenville Red Cabin and Barn from the 1940s. When he hired Derek Franks as general manager of the newly renamed Happs Place Barn & Grill, success seemed guaranteed.

Rex recruited trusted, longtime collaborators to the project to assist with design and marketing, as well as local and regional companies and talent, including JDavis Construction of Greenville.

“When I met Derek, I instantly knew he was our guy,” Rex reflects. “His resume reflected a work history of accomplishment, dedication, and loyalty that you don’t see often. But beyond all that, he has a transparent honesty about him that speaks to fun, trust, integrity, and unbelievable God-given optimism. Happs Place will be successful, and his Team Happs will be the best place to work that I can imagine.” “ I N E E D T H E C H A O S .”
An Asheville native, Derek’s career in the restaurant and hospitality business took him across the country as he worked his way up from a cook to a corporate executive with the Carrabba’s group of restaurants. After accepting a new challenge as vice president of operations for Benihana’s RA Sushi, he found himself traveling coast to coast 50 weeks of the year. He’d taken another position to expand a Dallas-based restaurant with an elevated Southern food concept when the COVID pandemic hit,
grinding plans to halt. Fully embracing the needed time out, he spent time on the golf course and pondered his next move. That’s when he and Rex connected through a mutual friend, an executive in the industry, and the rest is history. “I flew in to meet Rex and found him to be humble and honest,” Derek recalls. “He talked about his vision for Happs and we hit it off—big time. I flew back to Texas and realized I’d never met anyone like him. In the middle of the night, I wrote to tell him I accepted the job. When he called me back at 4:45 a.m. with his wife to celebrate the news, it proved what I thought: This was going to be very special.” Now settled into Plateau life, Derek reflects on coming home to the Blue Ridge Mountains. While attending high school at Asheville Christian Academy, he worked at the now-closed Biltmore Dairy Bar, managing it at age 18. “I’ve never done anything but worked in a restaurant,” he says, then grins. “I need the chaos that goes with a restaurant.”

Recognizing it was “a bigger job than anyone thought,” Derek, Rex and the rest of the Happs launch team were hands-on throughout its rebirth, making intentional choices about how best to honor and preserve various treasures while creating something new. “Our vision was to create a place where everyone feels comfortable, where you can get a good meal for a reasonable price, and the staff treats you like family, all while nestled in the local history and beauty of the Western North Carolina mountains,” Rex says. Reclaimed wood from the Moody House and
Oliver Homestead now lives on as trim and even tabletops. Former patrons may recognize the dining room chairs which were given a makeover with new fabric. The ceiling above Happy’s, the restaurant’s indoor bar, was once a metal roof. A collection of memorabilia rests on a wooden shelf above the doorway between the dining room and bar. Large, framed, neutral-toned photographs of long-ago mountain life command the wall space above the dining tables just as they did in the old Happ’s—a particular favorite of Derek. He gives credit to the new owner. “A lot of this was Rex. His eye and his vision

made this authentic.” Even original proprietor Darrell Happ, now retired and splitting his time between the Plateau and Florida, gives his full endorsement. “It’s beautiful. He did it right. He tried to keep all the history of Glenville—and he did. He kept a lot of our old signs and pictures. Come on down, get a cocktail and enjoy some good food.” A wider, newly-paved parking lot wraps around the completely redesigned exterior, with reserved parking for golf carts because “we always knew parking would be a challenge,” says Derek. The wagon wheels again flank the front door. But the real showpiece of Happs
may be the outdoor space in the back, which boasts a wide patio with a grand, floor-to-ceiling, two-sided fireplace, and a bar as well as a bandstand, a grassy area, and even a putting green. The restaurant can seat the same number—80—inside as outside. Tucked away on the property is a small, red, wooden building—called The Secret Room—rebuilt piece by piece from the barn that stood across Highway 107. Adjacent to a stone patio and fire pit, it seats 12 and requires a reservation and a minimum spend. The result is a destination that is one part stay-all-day playground and another part upscale tavern, topped off with an eatery to celebrate life’s best moments.

“They fit,” says Lake Glenville resident Kristin Robinson. “They did not miss a beat and they click within the community.” Calling Happs’ style “mountain elegance without being too fancy,” Kristin says it is a unique and exciting offering among the wonderful mix of Cashiers restaurants, particularly for those on the Glenville side of the Plateau. It reminds her of the iconic sitcom “Cheers.” “I always wanted a place where ‘everyone knows your name,’” she says. “Everyone’s so friendly, and it has that round bar outside. It totally gives you that community feeling.” Then, there’s the food—a mix of favorites from the old menu and new creations. Before opening its doors, the restaurant fielded dozens of calls from previous Happ's Place customers requesting certain dishes. “We actually kept some of the items off of Darrell’s menu,” Derek says. “We kept a lot of the sides—tomato cheese pie, squash casserole— plus, fried chicken livers and onions.” Its wide-ranging menu features comfort food entrees, wood-fired pizza, ice cream and pie. Its trout is locally sourced and offered three ways— cornmeal, pecan, or lemon herb crusted—just like Darrell used to serve. The culinary team includes local favorites. Head Chef Kyle Shuey previously worked at a Cashiers club and operated a food truck renowned for its biscuits. Pastry Chef Holly Powers makes the pies, cakes, bread pudding, and other desserts. “I love the trout and the shrimp and grits,” says Kristin. “For my husband’s birthday, they created a carrot cake. It was so beautiful and delicious that we gave it a standing ovation.” The bar offers local craft brews and cocktails, including a recipe from Rex’s brother for a tasty old fashioned. And there’s wine—lots and
lots of wine. The Happs wine cellar can hold 750 bottles; they plan to always have up to 80 stocked and offer a reserve wine list. In part because hiring has been a challenge, the restaurant has opened in phases. On September 8, Happs welcomed its first guests, members of the community group Friends of Lake Glenville, for “fast casual” outside dining with two seatings of 50. A few weeks later, the restaurant opened for a limited-menu dinner by reservation only. As of this writing, Happs was open Wednesday through Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for seated dining. Its pizzeria’s hours were 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the same days. Eventually, Happs will bring back Sunday Supper with each guest selecting a protein, such as fried chicken or country fried steak, a dessert, and shared side items. Derek and his team will continue to expand its hours, menu, and staff, as long as each hire is a good fit. “We’re going to serve good food and take good care of people,” Derek says. “This is a family restaurant—and that’s not only the people who come in here. That’s the people who work here.” Business has been brisk, proving people were literally and metaphorically hungry for Happs, which has committed to the community for the long haul. “People want this restaurant. We want to bring it back the right way and pay homage to the dining history that was here for more than four decades. We also want to put our spin on it and start our own legacy. This is a forever restaurant. It will be here a very long time and become a staple and a cornerstone for the community.” To learn more about Happs Place Barn & Grill, visit happsplace.com or find them on social at facebook.com/happsplace and instagram.com/ happsplace.

The sold-out audience settles into their folding chairs as dusk falls around them. Against a mountaintop silhouette, blue-hued lighting sets the mood on the stage, a transformed loading dock on the back of a performing arts studio. A gentle breeze stirs the anticipation. Jackson County’s new, professional theater, Calliope Stage Company, has arrived. The brainchild of Ashlee Wasmund, Calliope’s first production—a series of “shorts” based on stories of the Blue Ridge Mountains—took place in downtown Sylva this past August. A modified, encore performance was part of Mountain Heritage Day in September. The project was ambitious, particularly for an inaugural offering. “Calliope Shorts: Firsts!” involved more than 70 artists, ranging from a nine-year-old budding playwrite to accomplished professionals from across the country. The company staged 10 new theatrical pieces in less than four months, for eight performances over two weekends. One of those pieces, the popular, “Grimshawes Post Office: A Special Delivery,” is set in Cashiers. The historic, five-by-six feet wooden building that served as inspiration once operated as the smallest post office in the U.S. and still stands today, off Whiteside Cove Road. A musical comedy, the piece centers around a birth and explores mountain relationships in the 1930s. Kate McCosh, one of its three creators, also serves as Calliope’s assistant artistic lead and office manager for the Jackson County Arts Council. Inspired by a magazine article that pointed to how many women had served as Grimshawes’ postmaster, the team developed the characters and ran with the comedy, making it “as big and as crazy as it could be.” An Appalachian native among the group helped ensure authentic dialects. During rehearsals, the team discovered an opportunity to integrate the correct way to pronounce “Cashiers.” (Locals usually pronounce it “CASH-erz”.) “It was not something we had written in,” Kate explains. “We realized, ‘Oh, we can create a bit about this,’ and that’s what we did.” Calliope is a “passion project” for Ashlee, the company’s founder and artistic lead. An artist and choreographer whose work is performed across the country, she is also the director of

Feeling “called” to start the non-profit organization, she surrounded herself with talented and accomplished artists as well as dedicated community volunteers to serve on its board of directors (including this writer). Undeterred by the pandemic, the company’s public launch happened last year.

“This region is full of magic as well as absolutely incredible artists and stories,” Ashlee says. “And our team at Calliope feels very passionate about using our experiences and networks to create a high-caliber platform for the exploration and sharing of this artistry—both within our community and beyond.” Ashlee and team stay mindful of the company’s mission, which extends far beyond the stage. The stories they share aim to provoke “meaningful conversations” and create an “inclusive, authentic, and civil” gathering space during a time in which the county is experiencing significant growth. To sustain and recognize artistic talent, the company pays its collaborators and understands the positive economic impact an arts group can have on its community.
“We are proud and humbled to serve that purpose in Jackson County, a place filled with so many incredible small businesses and passionate business owners and with such an impressive tourism sector,” Ashlee says. “We truly believe that the performing arts can enhance an economy as well as the social well-being of a community and can elevate our collective mind, heart, and identity.” Lea Gilbert commuted from Glenville to direct two of the shorts, the ethereal “The Place Where the Souls Go” and layered “Sediment.” A University of North Carolina Asheville alumna, she studied the application of theater to the history of Western North Carolina for her undergraduate thesis. Having recently accepted a new position with the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Lea directed rehearsals when she wasn’t working at Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau. She is proud to have been part of Calliope’s first performance. “Calliope is the name of a hummingbird and also a muse (in Greek mythology) associated with music and poetry and I think that’s a great way to symbolize that Calliope has a voice,” Lea says. “We want the shows to come from the community and be for the community.” Lea is one of many artists who are part of the company’s theater education program. In addition to a summer camp, Calliope

offers year-round classes to all ages on topics from stage management to acting to writing. Going forward, the company has its eye on a permanent, “brick and mortar” home. In the meantime, it will search for unique opportunities to create theater in a variety of spaces across Jackson County, Ashlee says. “We’d love to hear from folks who might have interesting spaces to offer for our productions. To us, it’s all part of the creative process, and culling the beauty of storytelling out of what is right in front of us in these gorgeous mountains.”
Looking at the long term, Calliope hopes to build a bridge for the exchange of ideas and arts with other parts of the country—and even the world. Ashlee reflects with gratefulness on how Calliope has grown, with a lot of help, so far. “I like to say that it takes a village to raise a theatre company. And this Jackson County village is making Calliope Stage take flight in the most beautiful of ways.” To learn more about Calliope Stage Company, visit calliopestage.com or find them on social at facebook.com/calliopestage and instagram. com/calliopestage.

or Kevin Koach, life on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau is a family tradition.
From their home in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin’s family regularly began visiting the area when he was just an infant. At first, they would pilgrimage to the renowned Lake Toxaway area. Then, the beauty and waterfalls of Sapphire Valley drew them in, and his parents bought a townhome in Holly Forest on the first fairway of the golf course. Vacation days spent at Fairfield Lake, the snow ski life, and the Sapphire Valley Community Center led to the desire for a more spacious and enduring home. Kevin’s grandparents helped in that search, falling in love with the area themselves and ultimately purchasing the house next door. Through the years, other family mountain homes followed. Fast forward a few decades. Today, Kevin and his wife, Lindsey, are now full-time Plateau residents, with a home and membership in Trillium Links and Lake Club. “I’ve been coming here since before I can remember,” he says. “Lindsey and I are excited to have settled down here.” Kevin’s is a “full circle” story. Born and raised in Southwest Florida, he returned to the region for college, earning a Bachelor of Art degree in political science from Clemson University. After graduation, while on the Plateau helping his grandparents move into their mountain house for the season, a phone call came that would change his life. The call took him west to the Drift Prairie region—
specifically, North Dakota—where he spent more than six years working for multiple start-up and entrepreneurial companies in the oil and gas industry. There, Kevin honed his communication and negotiation skills while dealing with a vast array of personalities in a tough and competitive industry. Far from home and enduring long winters, Kevin experienced another life-changing moment in Bismarck, where mutual friends introduced him to his future wife. “For the first year we dated, she was based primarily in England,” Kevin says. “So, we were apart more than we were together.” The couple made it work, and in 2019 Kevin and Lindsey wed in Charleston, S.C. The destination wedding piqued Lindsey’s desire to make a change. Months later, the newlyweds relocated from North Dakota to his beloved Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Following in his Mom’s footsteps, Kevin transitioned his impressive business skills and experience to real estate, joining Silver Creek Real Estate Group. “I had known of (Silver Creek President/Founder) Jochen before because my mom was in the real estate business and had been impressed with everything Silver Creek had done,” he says. “The marketing aspect of the company was impressive, and I liked how hands on Jochen was, both as an owner and as a broker-in-charge.” Now approaching his second anniversary with the company, Kevin is an active member of the community, serving on the Board of Directors of

a pretty busy housing market. What qualities differentiate you from other agents?
“My grandfather was just up here, reconnecting with family and friends, and I was able to get together with him, cousins, and their families. My mom still comes up and has lunch or dinner with friends she has made over the years.”
I have multi-generational ties to the area. I know what the adults might be seeking, but also know what will entice their children or grandchildren. I have the unique experience of knowing why the area is fantastic for all those different age groups. I take that knowledge, along with my energy and tenacity, and always strive to go above and beyond for my clients. I have the drive and a hunger to succeed.
So, the family tradition continues.
How do you spend your free time?
Kevin says his extended family still journeys to the area to vacation.
Kevin recently spent some time with NC Living to share a bit more. How long have you been a professional real estate broker? I started in the fall/winter of 2019 and got my license just after New Years of 2020—right before the pandemic hit. For a moment I asked, “Did I make the right career choice?” And then the script flipped (with a high volume of activity) as our area exploded with growth as people recognized the advantages of our area. I’ve been busy ever since and I love it! How long have you been with Silver Creek Real Estate Group? I got my license in January 2020 and then interviewed with Jochen in person in February. We clicked from our first meeting. When we realized how long we had been talking, we also both realized our wives had reached out to make sure all was well as both of us were long overdue to be home. It’s been a fabulous experience from the start. A few months later, I joined the company, with all team meetings on Zoom, which afforded a unique opportunity for group interaction and training while all of us were locked down. It also provided a chance for the Silver Creek team to really get to know one another well, adding to a team atmosphere for our office. What are your goals for the next year/12 months? My goals include continuing to build clientele, being an advocate and ambassador for the area and the Plateau lifestyle, and helping clients manage through
If I’m not being “dragged” on a hike by my wife, I’m probably with the men’s tennis group in Trillium. I golf, as well. Kidding aside, we have a goal to see as many waterfalls as possible. So far, my favorite is easily Upper Whitewater Falls. If you’re looking for one that is off the beaten path, I highly recommend Secret Falls. What is something that most people don’t know about you? I have my private pilot’s license and have owned planes before, including a Piper Comanche 260B. At some point, I’ll get back into flying and owning another plane. What is the most important thing someone should know before starting their search for a home on the Plateau? When you look at a property on the map and it seems close to town, be aware that winding roads add time—sometimes 20 to 30 minutes to your drive. It helps to have someone who knows the area and can point out some things you may not have initially considered. What is your favorite design trend of the moment? A design element that struck me recently was a house with a metal roof with copper accents and it gave it a unique look—a cool way to stand out— timeless and elegant.
Kevin and his wife Lindsey have drinks with friends at Cashiers' Whiteside Brewery.
If someone is spending only a day on the Plateau, what would you say is the No. 1 thing they should do? If they can only do one thing, I always recommend a hike up to the top of Whiteside Mountain. If you get up there on a clear day, you can see for miles, it is just stunning. No one can experience those views and not be in awe. What is your favorite season on the Plateau? That is fall. Ninety percent of the reason is because the colors of the leaves are changing, but also because it is football season. (Go, Tigers!) I like the crispness of the air, how blue the sky gets, and it seems it’s always 50 degrees with sunshine. Currently, what is your favorite Plateau restaurant? For a casual, fun night out, Whiteside Brewery is our favorite, especially when they have live music. The higher-end restaurants that my wife and l like are The Orchard or Meritage Bistro in Highlands for an intimate, elegant night out. What is a nonprofit in the area about which you are passionate? I am an Eagle Scout, so I’d like to put that to use at the Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau. Growing up, I was a Boy Scouts of America camp leader. I
look forward to getting involved here, like I was in Sarasota. What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while working as a broker? Communication is key. The ability to listen, taking in the information of a client’s wants and needs, and then finding options for them or helping them market their property, is important. Helping someone who may not be well versed in real estate and proactively meeting their goals assures success and is very satisfying.

What advice would you give a new real estate agent?
What is the last book you read or a book recommendation?
Embrace the chaos. There’s a steep learning curve, but it’s going to be a lot of fun. It may be difficult at first, but it’s very rewarding in the end.
My favorite author is Clive Cussler. He wrote historical fiction and what I love about his books is that he incorporated actual history with his characters. He passed away in February of last year. I’ll miss his stories.
Where is your favorite place to travel and visit? Most recently, Lindsey and I were able to travel to Ireland. The maternal side of my family came from outside of Dublin, where an old castle still stands, called Malahide Castle, that you can tour inside. It was owned by the Talbots, a family name—in fact, it’s my middle name—which was recorded in Britain’s Domesday Book that documented all the landholdings commissioned by William I back in 1066. Today, the castle is managed by a land holding company out of Tasmania, Australia through descendants of the Talbots.
What was your first concert? Luke Bryan at Clemson University. What is the best concert you’ve ever attended? Admittedly, I’m not a big concert guy. But we have tickets to see Michael Buble in Greenville, and I’m excited for that show.

Jochen Lucke President/Broker | 828-226-1126 | www.jochenlucke.ncliving.com
With a bold entrepreneurial spirit and a firm belief that real estate is in his blood, Jochen Lucke has spent over two decades building his reputation as a skilled realtor, broker, contractor, and developer—first in Southeast Florida and now on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. His love of the mountains, paired with his love of family and community, brought Jochen to Western North Carolina. The decision to leave the sweltering heat and stressful environment of Fort Lauderdale for the cool, clean air, and laid-back atmosphere of Cashiers was an easy one. Since making the move, he has become deeply involved in the community, having served on the board of the Cashiers Community Fund. He is also past chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards and served on the boards of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. He is partnered with Haute Residence, an invitation-only luxury real estate portal. When he’s not hard at work at the Silver Creek Real Estate Group offices, Jochen can be found on the golf course or croquet lawn or dining in one of the area's fine restaurants. Jochen is devoted to the Silver Creek credo of "Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams." Whether you are looking for your vacation home, your primary residence,
or your dream estate, Jochen and his team of brokers are committed to finding the ideal property to fit your vision. Jochen has a firm grasp on the local real estate market while always keeping an eye on national trends. He has an innate understanding of the practice of purchasing and selling properties, both as a broker and a developer. He attributes much of his success to his tenacity and has negotiated and closed many deals from which others might have walked away. Jochen truly enjoys real estate and development and finds great rewards in the accomplishment of finding the perfect home for his clients. Jochen is licensed in both North Carolina and Florida.
"We listed our home with Silver Creek Real Estate Group, primarily due to its fine reputation and having previously met its President and Owner, Jochen Lucke. We received contracts immediately. "Let me begin by saying that having been a Marine for ten years, my standards for sacrifice, professionalism, and commitment are unfairly high. Dan Allen not only met, but surpassed each and every expectation set before him. He has fought for us, stood next to us, in times of need guided us with steadfast commitment, and represented us with great professionalism. Though we are not among his wealthiest clients, he has made us feel as though we were. His communication has been conducted with great clarity and punctuality. What speaks to his character is that he did not simply represent us, he took ownership of our goals and made them his own. We began our journey with the hopes to buy a house; fortunately we chose Dan Allen, and instead we found our home." - Eagle Enterprises Inc.

"Parker was wonderful to work with. At the beginning, he listened to our desires and presented a great, curated list of suitable properties and we quickly narrowed it down to the property we bought. Throughout the process Parker kept us updated on all the details and answered every email, text, and phone call within moments. "He arranged the closing and provided contacts for the various services that we will need. As we were buying from out of state, we really appreciated all of Parker’s help in making the process easy for us. "I would highly recommend working with Parker." - MARK & JACKIE BARRY
Rick Jackson Broker | 404-275-7617 | www.rickjackson.ncliving.com
The Lake Toxaway, Cashiers, and Sapphire Valley areas have always been a huge draw for Rick and his family. Since the mid90s, Rick and his family knew that one day they would like to own a second home where they could escape the heat and bustle of Atlanta. In 2008, they purchased a home on Lake Glenville where Rick, his wife, and three children—along with countless friends— have enjoyed the cool summers, beautiful fall colors, and the occasional snow during the holidays. Rick obtained his Georgia real estate license in 1998. He worked at a commercial real estate firm, specializing in residential development land in both suburban and in-town land tracts. In 2002, Rick starting purchasing his own investment property in the Atlanta area. His interests in real estate lead him into the Cashiers and Sapphire Valley market, and he obtained his North Carolina Real Estate License in 2014. When Rick is not busy selling real estate, he can be found outdoors playing golf, boating on Lake Glenville, or enjoying a motorcycle ride. He remains an active member at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, where he has taught Sunday School to four-year-olds for the last 21 years. He enjoys his commitments to his communities and has participated on several boards both in Atlanta and in North Carolina. Philanthropic support is very important to Rick and his wife Lisa. Areas of specific interest include the University of Tennessee baseball program, the Auburn University baseball program, Camp Merrie-Woode, Friends of Lake Glenville, Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department, Annandale Village of Suwanee, Georgia, the Chautauqua Institution in New York, and First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.
"Rick listed our Lake Glenville home and within days we had multiple cash offers, which turned into a bidding war. Rick’s professional guidance and constant communication provided us a smooth process during the transaction. Having an agent that lives on the lake as well has having an office on the lake proved to be invaluable. Rick went above and beyond in handling an abandoned well issue and septic permit discrepancy we were not aware of; he spent several weeks of his time sorting through the issues with the county and various vendors while we were out of state. Without question, Rick’s ability to take perspective buyers to visit lake properties via his boat made all the difference in getting maximum dollar for our home." - CHRIS AND MARY LYNN D.

Ray Trine Broker | 828-506-8520 | www.raytrine.ncliving.com
Ray Trine’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, he immediately launched his real estate career. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs, and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, Florida, to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, North Carolina. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys, and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in the mountains, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two
years later. He soon made his mark as the No. 1 real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summer Hill, Glenshore, Trillium Links and Lake Club, Bear Lake Reserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been president of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville, and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless and fascinating local narratives, and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

Rob Whitney
Broker | 828-399-1196 | www.robwhitney.ncliving.com
After growing up in Brentwood, Tennessee, Rob Whitney moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee. During college, Rob worked for GNC (General Nutrition Center), eventually becoming a franchisee of two store locations. While on vacation at Lake Glenville, he met the woman who would become his future wife, Susanne Moore. Susanne has been a general contractor since 1997, when she moved to the area where her mother had been a real estate broker for some time. After only a week, Rob knew she was "the one." A year later, he sold his stores, moved to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, and married Susanne on Snowbird Mountain. Rob knew he wanted to be a part of the family business in some manner; so, in 2005, he earned his real estate license. Since then, Rob has become a full-time, practicing, and skilled expert in the area's real estate market. Rob's retail background aids him in his real estate career, but he loves no longer being confined to a small store, instead spending every day in the beautiful outdoors helping his clients find their next dream property. Rob’s clients looking to build or renovate a home can draw from his wife's 24 years of experience to make informed decisions. Rob enjoys working with both buyers and sellers and understands that communication is the key to success. He can be reached by his clients seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. via phone call, text message, or email and they will always get a response.
"I have been working with Rob Whitney for about three years. In that time he has successfully sold my boat slip at Cedar Point and my home in Cashiers near Lake Glenville. We have another home that is under contract and will close soon. I interviewed several prominent realtors who had years of experience in the Cashiers area, but ultimately made an easy decision to go with Rob—a decision proven to have been the right one. He was very attentive and responsive throughout the whole process and really knew the market. I would certainly recommend him to anyone needing real estate expertise in the Cashiers Valley area." - ALAN AND MOLLY J.
