A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

As the calendar turns to 2022, it is appropriate to look back and—as we like to do best—look to the future. In fact, one of this issue’s articles focuses on forecasting the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau real estate market. This is an exciting era for real estate, and we truly enjoy sharing our knowledge and, as our motto states, building relationships and delivering dreams for those seeking to purchase or sell. Our confidence to predict what lies ahead is based not only on our significant experience within the area but also on our track record of unmatched success. Silver Creek Real Estate Group has sold more than $1 billion in real estate on the Plateau. The numbers, combined with our accomplished backgrounds, give our team the edge in understanding how our market compares and differs from others and what you—whether a seller or a buyer— might expect during the process. The market forecast is positive: While high demand for our sophisticated and rejuvenating mountain lifestyle will continue, pricing acceleration should slow, returning us to a market equilibrium that is sustainable. On our Plateau, investments in real estate continuously reap dual benefits—financial and well-being—with positive returns on both. While the real estate market is ever-changing, one thing remains constant—and that’s our commitment to our clients that their experience will be exceptional. Based in three offices on the Plateau—Cashiers, Highlands, and Lake Glenville—our highly-committed team of professionals understands that purchasing or selling property can be daunting without someone beside you to represent your interests and desires, negotiate on your behalf, and see the process through, not only to the closing but beyond. And when the market is particularly active and competitive, as we’ve experienced lately, this support is even more important. Almost everyone has their favorite season on our Plateau. Those who love winter enjoy the long views of mountain peaks through the bare trees, the solitude, and the occasional snowfall. As the green buds again appear, we are reminded of the beauty of fresh starts, new beginnings, and bright futures. Here, we can take comfort in the predictable rhythm of change. On our cherished Plateau, the best is always yet to come.

Smaller firms cannot necessarily support this; we can. We can handle a high volume of transactions and yet keep the integrity and quality of the client experience in place. Do you believe the growth we’ve experienced here can be sustained? In 2022, the acceleration in pricing will decrease as the year goes on. Prices will continue to increase, but at a slower pace. We will return to more of a market equilibrium which will provide for a healthy, balanced, and sustainable real estate market. If you’re considering selling in 2022, it will still be a great time to maximize valuation of the property. In addition, with a return to more of a market equilibrium, buyers will feel more comfortable purchasing and demand for real estate on the Plateau will remain strong. Is the Plateau still primarily a seasonal, resort destination and second-home market—or do you believe the pandemic era shifted or even permanently changed this? I think the Plateau will primarily remain a resort market. Traditionally, our clients, predominantly from the southeast, have bought properties to escape the heat and urban lifestyle challenges. Our temperatures are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than any of our immediate surrounding areas, including Asheville, Lake Keowee, and North Georgia. However, as we have seen over the last five years,

increase mortgage rates 50 to 75 basis points. But we must keep in mind these rates will still be historically low. So, we should not see a significant impact. I see a potentially bigger effect if the stock market sees a major or sustained correction. It’s a great time for people to look at real estate to diversify their portfolio. We have had many conversations with clients about this strategy. Real estate is both a financial and a lifestyle investment. The positive return impacts us financially but also our health and well-being. So, why are more people choosing to invest in real estate on our Plateau? We’ve seen the luxury market focus more on deeper, longer-term, more impactful experiences. It’s a desire to enjoy life. They’re enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and boating. They’re playing more golf, tennis, and croquet. The social and sporting clubs are incredibly popular, with many having a waitlist for membership. It’s a generational shift where they more fully embrace what is offered on the Plateau. We have an unbelievably extensive and diverse offering for a fulfilling cultural, intellectual, and active lifestyle. From a real estate investment standpoint, that makes the Plateau more sustainable and desirable for the long term. We’ve seen a steady, slow growth of the area that is sustainable but also desirable. And because of the love for the Plateau, there’s a tremendous spirit of giving and philanthropy to local nonprofit organizations and opportunities for involvement that benefit permanent and seasonal residents.

An idea is salvation by imagination. As chief architect — literally and figuratively — for out-of-the-box thinking, Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “An idea is salvation by imagination.” Using nature as his muse, he succeeded in changing the history of architecture. Case in point: The 1930s Skyline Lodge in Highlands, originally conceptualized by Frank Lloyd Wright’s disciple Arthur J. Kelsey, has found a new life. Turning a faded gem into a sparkling jewel, Indigo Road Hospitality Group, led by Founder and three-time James Beard Award Outstanding Restaurateur nominee

Steve Palmer, reimagined something out of the ordinary for this historic parcel on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Palmer, along with partner and marketing development guru Larry Spelts and Skyline General Manager Jason Dauble, found the opportunity to acquire the property irresistible. Dauble, a longtime visitor of Highlands, shed light on the purchase. “We all were, and are, in love with Highlands. We never knew about this property and when we found out it was for sale, we all just agreed [to look at it]. We saw it through all of the poor

decisions that were here. We walked the property and it was a no-brainer; we had to have it.” Drawing inspiration from the property’s historic roots and surrounding nature, Dauble explained when the bones are good, there’s a natural transformation that occurs. A facet of Skyline’s metamorphosis is the heralded addition of Oak Steakhouse. Oak is the first and only dedicated steakhouse in Highlands; but as Indigo Road’s seventh, it is part of a varied portfolio of close to 30 elevated dining establishments across the southeast. Stepping through the authentic, vaulted, redwood frame and glass entryway, Oak guests will delight

in the unexpected lack of heaviness typical of so many steakhouses. Dauble thoughtfully reflects on what makes Oak stand apart from the other Oaks. “First and foremost, it is the sense of place that makes this property special. None of the others have this view or historic features like hand-cut stone and vaulted ceilings. I feel like this almost has a feminine quality to it for a steakhouse.” Oak’s alluring central bar, Butler’s, greets dinner guests as they enter the restaurant. Flanked by two massive, original stone fireplaces, the lounge appeals to guests to relax in one of

several intimate spaces, including a mezzanine overlooking the bar, and sip a pre-dinner artisanal cocktail such as Dauble’s favorite, the Dark, Truthful Mirror, which blends Mezcal, Chartreuse, Lillet, lime, ginger, and mountain herbs. The mid-century modern space, decorated by Carrie Dessertine of Mey + Co, feels open and light due to the high ceilings, warm woods, and walls of glass that highlight the lush, natural landscape and mountain views beyond. The vintage-inspired decor is an incarnation of the Halston-era of the 60s and 70s, with soft leather, silk, and velvet in cushy colors such as caramel, clarified butter, charcoal, cloud grey, toast, and snowy white, creating a seductive interior. "For Oak, we wanted to keep it simple and let the inherent architecture of the building set the tone," explained Dessertine. "We were all thrilled when the original wood ceiling was uncovered, and we wanted to keep the warm woods going to offset the stone fireplaces. Our intention was to create a warm and natural dining room without it being rustic, so it was a little more sophisticated and buttoned up. The mohair and leather banquettes were intended to soften the room's surfaces, and we felt the color was both welcoming and sophisticated." The menu will not disappoint, with inspiring creations such as Beef Wellington, the Oak Smash Burger, Steak Tartare and — of course — what’s a steakhouse without the finest cuts of Certified Angus Beef? Its Oysters Rockefeller, created by Executive Chef and Partner Jeremiah Bacon, is a

staple on Oak’s menus. The restaurant makes it a priority to partner with area purveyors and neighboring farms, including well-known Sunburst Trout Farms in Waynesville, to bring the flavors of Appalachia right to the table. The beverage program, including an expansive wine list curated by Director of Outlets Michael Searles and Wine Director Vonda Freeman, complements the seasonal menus. Après dinner, guests will “ooh” and “ahh” over Pastry Chef Anne White’s desserts such as her signature Sorghum Caramel Cake or lovely, gluten-free Eight Layer Chocolate Cake. Patrons are encouraged to close the evening with a French press coffee or a beverage on the property’s outdoor patio, complete with portable fire pits, while the sounds of nearby Big Creek Falls and Laurel Falls add to the ambiance. Or, if a later night with more cocktails, music, and bourbon is your speed, meander down the back stairwell to a quaint reading room concealing the entrance to a charming speakeasy. Locals and lodge guests alike will rejoice over Indigo Group’s bespoke events and adventures, some in the works, such as wine tastings, outdoor whiskey and cigar pairings, winemaker dinners, oyster roasts, foraging events, interactive chef events, and live entertainment. “Under the Stars and on the Rocks” will bring together a guest chef or pitmaster with an outdoor kitchen, cocktails, and, of course, the mountain sky. Put Oak on your “must-do” list and stay tuned for other good things to come at Skyline Lodge.

about skyline lodge Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Skyline Lodge’s reimagination team worked closely with the North Carolina State Historical Preservation Office to preserve its heritage. Tucked away in the bucolic Blue Ridge Mountains, the quirky lodge’s extensive renovation of the beloved, historic 1930s-era property was phase one of Indigo Road Hospitality Group’s plan for the sprawling property. “Skyline Lodge is iconic—the property is nearly 100 years old and has lived many lives over the decades,” says Larry Spelts, Indigo’s president, lodging and lifestyle adventures. “We jumped at the chance to acquire and

renovate the building as Indigo Road’s first hotel project and think guests are going to fall in love with the location’s surrounding nature, beautiful mid-century design, and culinary-driven approach.” The lodge’s interiors, designed by Carrie Dessertine of Mey + Co, evoke a crisp, natural feel that picks up where the surrounding nature ends. The lobby and 40 guest rooms offer a fresh approach to 60s and 70s décor, honoring the eras with funky touches such as terracotta flooring and circular patterns, while also uniquely leveraging organic, natural, and textural elements (think: cork headboards, exposed stonework, and wooden furniture). Throughout the spaces, a calming, beautiful color palette of greens and neutrals pulls the outside in and allows guests to feel truly immersed in the surrounding scenery. The historic wing of the lodge showcases original stone fireplaces, subtle views, and the sound of the rushing creek a hundred feet below the property. Jason Dauble, Skyline’s

general manager, says, "The aim is to be a charming, four-star lodge that is laid back, fun, and approachable with friendly service." Outside, the lodge boasts the area’s most stunning panoramic views as well as easy access to a variety of hiking trails, waterfalls, shopping destinations, and additional opportunities to enjoy the nature and amenities both within and beyond the property. Partnering with the highly praised company Highlands Excursion, lodge guests have a menu of outdoor adventures from which to choose. Guests have the luxury to venture out by day and then return to a peaceful, tucked-away setting where cocktails, fine wine, roaring fires, and delicious food await them at Oak Steakhouse. “The lodging options in Highlands tend to skew either very casual or very luxury, and we saw a need for something in between — relaxed, but authentic, with elevated design and lively service — which is the way our team loves to travel and dine in our own free time,” says Founder Steve Palmer.

REAL ESTATE GROUP

Silver Creek

EXPANDS TEAM AT HIGHLANDS OFFICE Silver Creek Real Estate Group recently welcomed Ken Taft and Debby Hall as the latest additions to its growing broker team. Both are based at Silver Creek’s Highlands office, for which Ken serves as Broker-In-Charge. After helping clients sell and purchase property in the Highlands area for more than a decade, Silver Creek recently announced a new office in

its downtown area—the company’s third on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Located 537 Main Street, between Mountain Fresh Grocery and the Highland Hiker, the Highlands office offers plenty of convenient parking and walking access to shopping and dining. The company has two other Plateau locations—its main office on Highway 64 West in Cashiers and its Lake Glenville office on Highway 107 North.

“We’re excited that Ken and Debby chose to grow their real estate careers with Silver Creek,” said President Jochen Lucke. “In addition to their real estate experience, they each bring unique and impressive backgrounds that will serve our clients, our community, and our company very well.” A North Carolina native, Ken Taft began his residential real estate career in Charlotte, then migrated to Highlands in 2013. He is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a dual degree in business administration and management. Before real estate, he worked in the corporate sector, first with a frozen food distributor, eventually serving as General Manager of the Carolinas, and then with American Studios, which P.C.A. International acquired.

Debby was selected multiple times to take part in the exclusive Atlanta Symphony Showhouse and Christmas at Callanwolde events. She holds a bachelor of science in interior design degree from the University of Tennessee as well as real estate licenses in North Carolina and Georgia. When she is not working, Debby enjoys artistic pursuits, including cooking, gardening, and landscape design, and spending time with her son’s family in Knoxville, Tenn. Previously, she served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics and for boards and committees in her neighborhoods. “I’m a lifelong lover of anything that has to do with the home,” Hall said. “Choosing Silver Creek as my new real estate home was an easy choice because I’ve observed their stellar marketing and how well they know the Plateau and serve their clients. Silver Creek truly is exceptional.”

“We’re excited that Ken

and Debby chose to grow

“With its exceptional marketing platform and market leadership on the Plateau, Silver Creek is definitely the right company to take my real estate career and client service to the next level,” Ken said. “I am enjoying welcoming clients and visitors to Main Street Highlands and being a part of the incredible momentum of the Silver Creek team.”

their real estate careers with Silver Creek,” said

President Jochen Lucke. “In addition to their real estate experience, they each bring unique and impressive backgrounds that will serve our clients, our community,

Debby Hall lived in Atlanta most of her life before relocating to Highlands, where she has resided full time for the past couple of years and part time for more than 15. For 34 years, she worked in interior design, collaborating with architects during the planning stages and builders on selections for construction and interiors, and providing final decorating with furniture, accessories, and artwork. Her career took her from Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tenn., Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Daufuskie Island and Hilton Head Island in S.C., working on high-end custom and specification homes. Additionally,

and our company very well.”

Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s Cashiers office is the top-performing office on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, closing more transactions than any other office in 2020 with $233 million in total sales volume. Silver Creek continued to lead in 2021 as well, with $253 million in sales volume and 397 closed transactions as of December 17.

Silver Creek Real Estate Group offers an exceptional experience for its clients seeking to purchase or sell real estate throughout the Cashiers-Highlands Plateau, including Cashiers, Highlands, Sapphire Valley, Lake Glenville, Lake Toxaway, Scaly Mountain, and Bear Lake, N.C. Established in 2008, Silver Creek is known throughout the Plateau for its superior, award-winning marketing platform, which includes ncliving.com and NC Living magazine.

Fireside gatherings, whether around a hearth on a covered porch, in a chimney garden, or an intimate fire pit are a wonderful way to keep our friendships and hearts (not to mention our fingers and toes) warm.

said glenn ubertino, owner/manager of Zoller.

Let’s start with the fire itself. If you already have access to an outdoor fireplace or fire pit that is safe and ready, you’re in great shape. If not, it’s time to buy or build. If you choose to buy, you have several options. As featured in our previous issue of NC Living, the Yukon Solo Stove is ideal for a hassle-free and flexible experience. Its 38 pounds of stainless steel make it easy to move, and it operates with less smoke. It is available at solostove.com. Closer to home, Zoller Hardware on N.C. 107 near the Cashiers crossroads offers several categories and brands of outdoor fire pits. “People are using their backyards more than ever,” said Glenn Ubertino, owner/manager of Zoller. “So, all of our products are really popular.”

If you choose to build your fire pit, we highly recommend researching the best techniques (and local regulations or approval requirements) or even consulting with a professional. Your fire pit should sit 15 to 20 feet away from your home and any outbuildings, with distance from trees, high grass, and power lines. To enhance your fire’s scent, consider adding dried apple and orange slices, pine cones, cinnamon sticks, apple or cedar wood, or dried herbs, such as rosemary or sage.

And don’t forget to pick up prosciutto, salami, nuts, pepperoncini, and bruschetta. Another idea is to ask each guest to bring a covered dish to share. Because guests often turn to their specialty or most requested dish, your party could become a “best of” display. Delicious dessert comes in many forms such as locally-made pies, cookies, or cakes. But if you have an open fire, there is nothing like s’mores for family and friends. Sinful chocolate, gooey marshmallow, and graham cracker goodness is a fun, sticky, time. Winter is a red wine’s moment to shine. Alexander “Bo” Bogart, dining room manager at The Chattooga Club in Cashiers, recommends two varieties for fireside enjoyment: Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. For the former, Bo suggests either Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon or Duckhorn, both from Napa Valley which produces world-renowned wines year after year. “Both are full bodied, traditional style Cabernets and would be a beautiful addition of warmth around a fire with acidic notes and those of earthiness and dark berries,” he says. Two Pinot Noirs highly worth considering are King Estate Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley region in Oregon and Merry Edwards from the Sonoma Coast of California.

Of course, a blazing fire doesn’t come without some risk, so be sure to keep pets and children away. Make sure your fire is always supervised by an adult and have an extinguisher and fire-retardant blanket or bucket of sand on hand.

About an hour before the party ends, stop adding material so the fire can burn down naturally. When your party is over, use a shovel to spread out any remaining embers. Then, douse with water.

sits jewel-like amid terraced gardens, which perfectly blend into the remarkable site and take full advantage of the views of Bald Rock and Lake Fairfield. Designed by the noted Meyer Greeson Paullin Benson architectural firm, the home was built by Dearl Stewart Construction and decorated by Amelia T. Handegan. The purchase of the home includes antiques from all over the world, including French, early Italian, Flemish, English, Swedish, Welsh, and British Colonial furniture; Oushak, Turkish, and Persian antique rugs; English, Italian, and Swedish paintings; and French and English mirrors. The primary bedroom suite sits on the main floor, with two sleeping rooms, two baths, and two closets, while three guest suites share a sitting room upstairs. The kitchen provides a large island, an informal dining nook, and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, as well as easy access to the formal dining room. A bonus room above the two-car garage offers a private entrance, and an additional freestanding two-car garage is currently being used for property maintenance. Mary Palmer Dargan conceived the landscape design, guided by the owner's desire to create a sustainable environment that integrates the gardens with the emerging architecture to produce a home environment that honors its setting. Along with native granite boulders, many tons of Tennessee fieldstone make up the meandering paths and stepping stones. elements add continuous interest as the seasons unfold, from the spring trilliums and other wildflowers through to the splendid fall foliage. Even the winters offer stunning vignettes when the many dwarf conifers and sculptural stonework come to the fore. The gardens were planted and maintained to be a haven for wildlife, particularly birds and butterflies, with myriad sources of nectar. Many species of mountain swallowtails, fritillaries, buckeyes, and painted ladies complete the Edenic atmosphere of the garden. The property is also home to a wide variety of breeding birds, including warblers, vireos, hummingbirds, tanagers, bluebirds, and other songbirds. The water feature is a magnet for migrating birds in the spring and fall when one can sit and watch the thirsty warblers descend for a drink. It also serves as a breeding site for green and wood frogs, as well as grey tree frogs, spring peepers, and salamanders. From the magnificent copper beeches that frame the front of the house to the elaborately layered woodland meander, the garden encompasses a richness of design and planting where texture, form, structure, and color all meld to create a whole greater than any individual element. Jochen Lucke President/Broker | 828-226-1126 | www.jochenlucke.ncliving.com

With a bold entrepreneurial spirit and a firm belief that real estate is in his blood, Jochen Lucke has spent over two decades building his reputation as a skilled realtor, broker, contractor, and developer—first in Southeast Florida and now on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. His love of the mountains, paired with his love of family and community, brought Jochen to Western North Carolina. The decision to leave the sweltering heat and stressful environment of Fort Lauderdale for the cool, clean air, and laid-back atmosphere of Cashiers was an easy one. Since making the move, he has become deeply involved in the community, having served on the board of the Cashiers Community Fund. He is also past chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards and served on the boards of the HighlandsCashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. He is partnered with Haute Residence, an invitation-only luxury real estate portal. When he’s not hard at work at the Silver Creek Real Estate Group offices, Jochen can be found on the golf course or croquet lawn or dining in one of the area's fine restaurants. Jochen is devoted to the Silver Creek credo of "Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams." Whether you are looking for your vacation home, your primary residence,

S ILVER CR E EK REA L ESTAT E G R O UP

or your dream estate, Jochen and his team of brokers are committed to finding the ideal property to fit your vision. Jochen has a firm grasp on the local real estate market while always keeping an eye on national trends. He has an innate understanding of the practice of purchasing and selling properties, both as a broker and a developer. He attributes much of his success to his tenacity and has negotiated and closed many deals from which others might have walked away. Jochen truly enjoys real estate and development and finds great rewards in the accomplishment of finding the perfect home for his clients. Jochen is licensed in both North Carolina and Florida.

"We listed our home with Silver Creek Real Estate Group, primarily due to its fine reputation and having previously met its President and Owner, Jochen Lucke. We received contracts immediately. When we were experiencing closing problems, Jochen stepped in behind the scenes and reached out to both the regional and state mortgage broker managers for assistance. This was a huge undertaking and one that could be accomplished by very few. Jochen is a remarkably influential person and his company, Silver Creek Real Estate Group, is tops in the real estate field." - RICHARD AND CARLEY STARR

Dan Allen Broker | 828-508-2107 | www.danallen.ncliving.com

A member of the Silver Creek team since its beginnings, Dan has built a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional and a consistent top producer. His dedication, knowledge of the area and market trends, and his strong work ethic make him the ideal broker choice for buyers and sellers alike to achieve their real estate goals. He possesses an innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau— just as he was after many summertime visits with family as a child. In 1994, Dan was able to realize his lifelong dream when he set down roots on a mountaintop farm near Cashiers. An advocate for animals and the environment, he has been deeply involved in his community, previously serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance, and supports the HighlandsCashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy, as well as local first responder organizations and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is currently serving on the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and is a member of the North Carolina Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. He brings nearly three decades of experience with local builders, designers, contractors, lawyers, fellow brokers, and business owners together for a seamless real estate experience. He brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive, straight-shooting perspective, vast local knowledge, honesty, integrity, and authentic interest in his clients' satisfaction make him an invaluable listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, he spends much of his time with his own family, friends, and three rescue dogs, and can be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake, hiking, or biking local trails, gardening, foraging, or cultivating his farm. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.

"Let me begin by saying that having been a Marine for ten years, my standards for sacrifice, professionalism, and commitment are unfairly high. Dan Allen not only met, but surpassed each and every expectation set before him. He has fought for us, stood next to us, in times of need guided us with steadfast commitment, and represented us with great professionalism. Though we are not among his wealthiest clients, he has made us feel as though we were. His communication has been conducted with great clarity and punctuality. What speaks to his character is that he did not simply represent us, he took ownership of our goals and made them his own. We began our journey with the hopes to buy a house; fortunately we chose Dan Allen, and instead we found our home." - EAGLE ENTERPRISES INC.

Parker and Caroline welcomed their first child in February 2021 and are looking forward to raising their family in the mountains. Parker is committed to community involvement, from attending Church of the Good Shepherd to serving on his HOA board to volunteering at the Village Green and serving on the board of the Cashiers Historical Society. "He arranged the closing and provided contacts for the various services that we will need. As we were buying from out of state, we really appreciated all of Parker’s help in making the process easy for us. "I would highly recommend working with Parker." - MARK & JACKIE BARRY

Chris Duffy Broker | 828-526-6763 | www.chrisduffy.ncliving.com

Many denizens and regular visitors of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau recognize Chris' voice the second they speak with him. That's not surprising, as Chris was the voice of the Plateau for a number of years as the morning show host on WHLC FM 104.5. Once you meet Chris, you'll certainly never miss him again, as his 6'9" stature literally makes him stand above the crowd. Chris was born in Germany and grew up in Washington, D.C. After studying at Georgia Tech and graduating from the University of Maryland, Chris moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lived for 22 years. In Canada, Chris worked as an on-air talent on numerous radio stations. He moved to Highlands in 2017 to take the job at WHLC. "I moved to the mountains to become the voice of Highlands, little did I know how much the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau would speak to me." An avid cook, Chris attended Le Cordon Bleu receiving a Certificat de Traiteur and loves sampling all the culinary delights the HighlandsCashiers area has to offer. Chris quickly fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and decided he wanted to help other people enjoy our beautiful nature and live in our truly unique and amazing community. While he's no longer on the air, Chris still gets behind the mic as the in-game P.A. announcer for Highlands High School Basketball.

"We recently purchased property in Highlands, NC with the assistance of Chris Duffy as our realtor. During these pandemic times we had to work with messaging and text services. Whenever we were able to visit the property, Chris provided detailed information to review. Chris was diligent to answer our questions and provide additional information. Calls were quickly returned. When we neared closing Chris worked with the attorney so that we could do a closing without traveling to Highlands. It was a great experience, we would recommend anyone to use Chris as their realtor." - GREG AND KAREN

Debby Hall Broker | 828-200-4057 | www.debbyhall.ncliving.com

Debby Hall is used to finding and creating dream homes for clients. For more than three decades, she has been a successful, Atlanta-based interior designer and entrepreneur, with clients across the Southeastern U.S. Debby’s work was featured for three consecutive years at both the Atlanta Symphony Showhouse and Christmas at Callanwolde events. Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s motto, “Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams,” aligns with Debby’s philosophy. Through years of experience, she gained the ability to listen closely and understand clients’ wants and needs, and then match them to a home that fits. Debby often scouted potential homes with her clients in Atlanta, Highlands, on Lake Keowee, and on Daufuskie Island. Rick Jackson Broker | 404-275-7617 | www.rickjackson.ncliving.com

The Lake Toxaway, Cashiers, and Sapphire Valley areas have always been a huge draw for Rick and his family. Since the mid90s, Rick and his family knew that one day they would like to own a second home where they could escape the heat and bustle of Atlanta. In 2008, they purchased a home on Lake Glenville where Rick, his wife, and three children—along with countless friends— have enjoyed the cool summers, beautiful fall colors, and the occasional snow during the holidays. Rick obtained his Georgia real estate license in 1998. He worked at a commercial real estate firm, specializing in residential development land in both suburban and in-town land tracts. In 2002, Rick starting purchasing his own investment property in the Atlanta area. His interests in real estate lead him into the Cashiers and Sapphire Valley market, and he obtained his North Carolina Real Estate License in 2014. When Rick is not busy selling real estate, he can be found outdoors playing golf, boating on Lake Glenville, or enjoying a motorcycle ride. He remains an active member at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, where he has taught Sunday School to four-year-olds for the last 21 years. He enjoys his commitments to his communities and has participated on several boards both in Atlanta and in North Carolina. Philanthropic support is very important to Rick and his wife Lisa. Areas of specific interest include the University of Tennessee baseball program, the Auburn University baseball program, Camp Merrie-Woode, Friends of Lake Glenville, Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department, Annandale Village of Suwanee, Georgia, the Chautauqua Institution in New York, and First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.

"Rick listed our Lake Glenville home and within days we had multiple cash offers, which turned into a bidding war. Rick’s professional guidance and constant communication provided us a smooth process during the transaction. Having an agent that lives on the lake as well has having an office on the lake proved to be invaluable. Rick went above and beyond in handling an abandoned well issue and septic permit discrepancy we were not aware of; he spent several weeks of his time sorting through the issues with the county and various vendors while we were out of state. Without question, Rick’s ability to take perspective buyers to visit lake properties via his boat made all the difference in getting maximum dollar for our home." - CHRIS AND MARY LYNN D.

Kevin Koach Broker | 828-556-9545 | www.kevinkoach.ncliving.com

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin was fortunate enough that his family had the good sense to escape the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida summers to vacation in the cool mountain air of Western North Carolina. Spending time in the Highlands-Cashiers area since he was a young boy led to a genuine appreciation for the miles of hiking trails, pristine lakes, majestic waterfalls, and awe-inspiring vistas that make up the Plateau landscape. After graduating from Clemson University, Kevin headed west for the open plains of North Dakota where he spent the next six and a half years developing and managing multiple companies engaged in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota. It was there in North Dakota that Kevin was introduced by mutual friends to his wife Lindsey, and they were married in 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina. After enduring numerous long and frigid winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong, and they moved permanently to the HighlandsCashiers area a few months later. When not advocating for the Plateau lifestyle with his clients, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, playing a round of golf or tennis, or enjoying the phenomenal food at one of the area’s local restaurants. Kevin is also a member of the Trillium Links & Lake Club and serves on the Board of the Trillium Links Condo Association. In addition to serving on the board, Kevin is also a member of the men’s tennis group and has recently begun dabbling in the increasingly popular sport of croquet. Kevin’s wife Lindsey recently completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice and is in talks to serve the community as a Family Nurse Practitioner—DNP, APRN, FNP-C.

"I knew working with Kevin Koach was going to be a terrific experience and comfortable fit from the first time he and I spoke on the phone. Kevin is extremely diligent and is an excellent communicator, which was essential since we live more than four hours away. We find Kevin to be a true professional in every sense of the word. His local knowledge of the area helped us immensely and quickly allowed us to focus on what was truly important to us. He was always available to meet us in person, or for a phone call at our convenience. Our experience was nothing but a pleasure because of Kevin’s expertise and demeanor. We highly recommend Kevin and will continue to use he and the Silver Creek organization for all of our future realtor needs..." - DAN & KATHY

While on vacation at Lake Glenville, he met the woman who would become his future wife, Susanne Moore. Susanne has been a general contractor since 1997, when she moved to the area where her mother had been a real estate broker for some time. After only a week, Rob knew she was "the one." A year later, he sold his stores, moved to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, and married Susanne on Snowbird Mountain. Rob knew he wanted to be a part of the family business in some manner so, in 2005, he earned his real estate license. Since then, Rob has become a full-time, practicing, and skilled expert in the area's real estate market. Small but

Mighty words by Kara Addy photography provided by The Bascom

Wintertide calls for a warm, crackling fire, a toasty beverage, a woolen blanket, and a good book. For those who devour tomes, then hunger for more, a Little Free Library is worth a visit. A worldwide nonprofit organization and movement, the Little Free Library concept is best explained by its simple motto: “Take a book. Share a book.” It aims to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access (after all, they are available 24/7) through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Libraries. Early last year, the Bascom erected the small structure, one of eight such libraries located within zip code 28741. (For a complete map, visit littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/.) The art center stayed true to its mission in two ways: It partnered with an artist, volunteer, and member—woodworker Charley Tarver—to design and create the piece, and it offered only art books when it launched. (As visitors take and leave books, the selection becomes a mixture of genres.) “It is very reflective of the architecture of the building, which was Charley’s vision,” explains Billy Love, The Bascom’s creative director. “He donated his time and materials, and our Facilities Manager Maurice Laderoot built the

stand, poured the concrete pad, and installed it, so it’s safe and sturdy.” Visitors to this particular Little Free Library may also want to step inside The Bascom to experience its winter exhibitions: “Emergence: A Survey of Southeastern Studio Programs” - Opening Jan. 15 in the Bunzl Gallery, this exhibit evolved from the center’s popular “100 Miles” program. It will showcase the work of faculty and student pairs to celebrate artist development. Winter Resident Artist Program – Beginning on Jan. 11 in the Thompson Gallery, resident artist Colin Dawson, a master of fine arts candidate at Western Carolina University, will show sitespecific work related to the center’s annual theme, “Place.” Permanent Collection – Starting Jan. 29, The Bascom will exhibit in its Joel Gallery a limited amount of work from its permanent collection. Laissez les bons temps rouler Words by Kara Addy Recipe Provided by NewOrleansRestaurants.com Photography Provided by Houmas House

If you can’t make it to The Big Easy for Mardi Gras this year, why not “let the good times roll” at home—or, at least, in the kitchen? This year, Shrove Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday, falls on March 1. (The date changes annually because it is connected to Easter.) Traditionally, households would consume the forbidden foods –meat, eggs, and dairy—before Lent, the season of fasting and penitence that begins with Ash Wednesday. A culinary delight associated with the season, king cake likely originated in France and migrated to New Orleans in the late 19th century. While the French version is made of an almondfilled pull pastry with a decorative

pattern, the New Orleans-style cake reflects Spanish and Latin influences, such as icing and candied fruit. King cakes begin appearing on Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, on January 6. We borrowed this twist on the king cake from Houmas House, a New Orleansarea antebellum estate once owned by General Wade Hampton I—yes, that Hampton family who once owned the land on which Cashiers’ High Hampton and Wade Hampton Golf Club stand today. In 1829, General Hampton transformed Houmas Mansion as he set out to build a home fitting for his wife. Today, Houmas House welcomes people from around the world to dine at one of its renowned restaurants and tour its famous grounds.

Just minutes from the shopping and fine dining of downtown Cashiers, Blue Bear Camp is the ultimate Adirondack-style mountain lodge. This prime property borders the Nantahala National Forest, ensuring privacy and abundant wildlife. Another world awaits in the dream-like setting amid the wild Chattooga River, flowering landscaping, sparkling waterfall, and lush forest, all against the stunning backdrop of Whiteside Mountain and Devil's Courthouse.

NC L IVI N G WINTE R 2022

Reminiscent of the great camps in the early 1900s, the rustic decor is warm and welcoming with natural wood details such as pine logs with golden chinking, wax-rubbed reclaimed heart pine floors, and a grandiose circular log staircase surrounding a seven-foot antler chandelier. The staircase is a masterpiece of engineering, constructed from Colorado Ponderosa pine over three months. Much of the custom furniture and details were built by local craftsmen on site. Other unique finishes were created by artisans from across the country, using natural materials such as mica, aged copper, shed elk antlers from Wyoming, Canadian birch bark, wormy chestnut, and turquoise. The stunning stonework and multiple fireplaces throughout the home were built from Tennessee fieldstones, many of which reveal 300,000-year-old fossils. In addition to the private guest quarters with a kitchenette and laundry room, the sprawling threestory home with an elevator offers an abundance of space for family and guests to explore, including a sunroom, library, an artist studio, a game room, a wine cellar, a resplendent home theater, and a fitness room with a sauna and steam room. Nature lovers will revel in the magical surroundings and fresh mountain air on the covered porch amid the sights and sounds of the rushing waterfall. There's something for everyone to enjoy in an area offering residents access to countless natural resources and opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking, fly fishing, biking, skiing, and golf.

The Safari of His Life Words by Kara Addy Photography Provided by Africa Awaits and Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

S ILVER CR E EK REA L ESTAT E G R O UP

In the early 2000s, Cashiers resident Alastair Lamont lived the corporate life as general manager of a packaging company in his native South Africa. Though highly successful, he found himself unfulfilled, unsatisfied. His vocation did not align with his passion and values, he believed, and he longed to return to the life of adventure he had known as a child, exploring the rivers, seas, and mountains on the southern parts of the continent.

“baboonery,” as he calls it—the escapades and exploration he had craved. But, after a while, he desired less isolation. The more populous South Africa called him home.

Self-reinvention prevailed and he accepted a job as a SCUBA diving instructor on an island lodge on Tanzania’s Lake Tanganyika. The nearest town was 100 miles away— an eight-to-10-hour drive on an unpaved road—and the rainy season was treacherous. Harvesting his own food meant a salad wasn’t just a meal or side dish; it was three months’ preparation and pride. Despite the challenges, his life was abundant with

Returning to the Cape Town area, where he’d grown up in the shadow of Table Mountain, Alastair worked as a tour guide and lodge manager on a 37,000-acre farm. His desire for both adventure and robust human connection fulfilled, he still had “itchy feet,” wanting to pursue the role of his dreams: leading safaris and sharing the stories of African wildlife as a game ranger. Even though others told him, in his mid-30s, he was a bit “long in the tooth” for such work, Alastair completed an arduous training course that weeded out two-thirds of those who began. At last, all the pieces were in place. That led to an almost five-year stint at Kwandwe, an award-winning, world-

class private game reserve and safari destination along the Great Fish River on the plains of South Africa’s scenic Eastern Cape province. With 54,000 acres and accommodations for 60 guests, Kwandwe (which translates to “place of the blue crane”) provides one of the highest guest-to-land ratios in the region and is home to the “big five” species: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo. Calling his time there “a true privilege,” Alastair worked his way up from ranger to head ranger to lodge manager. Lasting friendships emerged with the guests for which he created unforgettable experiences on safari. Along the way, he refined his storytelling skills, something that serves him well to this day. “It is amazing how your life falls into place when you follow your passion,” he reflects. Finally, he was on the path that aligned with advice a friend once gave him: “There’s only one life, so live it twice. Live every day, twice.” THE CASHIERS CONNECTION

So, what brought him to Cashiers? Simply put love. Laura Lamont worked for the Peace Corps when she and Alastair met. Assigned to teach schoolchildren “seven miles as the crow flies” across the Buffalo River from him in Zululand, South Africa, Laura met Alastair at a lodge where she occasionally would go for a warm meal and shower. Their courtship became intercontinental but lasted. Eventually, Alastair made his way to visit her family’s mountain home in Highlands, where he proposed. In the fall of 2016, the couple married at Summer Chapel in Whiteside Cove. By the summer of 2019, after several moves within the U.S., they lived full time on the HighlandsCashiers Plateau—another dream fulfilled. Now a family of four—Alastair Andrew is two and Mary Cameron is one—the Lamonts “couldn’t be happier” in their creekside home in Cashiers’ Silver Slip community. In March 2021, the couple founded Africa Awaits, a safari travel

consultancy. Alastair says every twist and turn along the way has been worth it. “Safari is Swahili for journey,” Alastair says. “And it has been the safari of my life to get where I am today.” AFRICA AWAITS

Alastair emphasizes that Africa Awaits does not deliver “a turnkey safari” but rather a customized, luxury experience for each client and their wish list. “Every one of our safaris and offers is uniquely designed. It is not a cookie-cutter process; it’s personalized.” The company’s website, africaawaitsus.com, features eight potential destination countries in the southern and southeastern parts of the continent, from Botswana to Zimbabwe. A visit to an elephant sanctuary. Rounds at the top golf courses in South Africa. A mountaintop hike to a stone cottage overlooking False Bay where a private chef awaits. A safari to discover giraffes, cheetahs, and rhinoceros. Wine tours. Whale watching. From traditional to more exotic adventures, they can make it happen, Alastair says. “If you want to jump off the highest bungee jump in the world, go balloon riding or shark cage diving, it can be arranged. Whatever you want to do, that’s what we want to create.” The Lamonts usually do not travel with their guests and serve as guides, unless by request, as doing so adds to the cost. Instead, they use their broad and deep relationships with local experts to provide “a

white-glove experience,” meaning handlers meet their clients at the airport, where they are privately driven or flown to destinations (usually higher-end), and personally guided throughout their visit. Alastair’s multilingualism—he speaks English, Afrikaans, and “splatterings” of Swahili and Zulu—helps make communication and planning easy. In addition to customized safaris, Africa Awaits offers annual group trips in partnership with Highland Hiker as part of the outfitter’s world travel and adventure component. Tentative itineraries are planned for September 2022 and spring 2023. The pandemic has impacted business, Alastair says, but not in the way one might think. While travel and borders shut down, it also prompted people to make or reflect upon their bucket list and to venture further, including to “wild and crazy places” such as Africa. The remoteness and less populous environments of most destinations add a layer of safety, Alastair says. “Whether preor post-COVID, safety has always been a top priority for us.” He encourages those considering an African safari to consider the planning process part of the adventure. “The journey isn’t where you land. It starts at home, where you start thinking and dreaming about it. So, take the time to dream—bigger and further—because Africa truly is life-changing.” To learn more about Africa Awaits, follow them on Instagram @africa.awaits or visit africaawaitsus.com

WORDS BY KARA ADDY PHOTOS BY MOLLY HARRIS

G

rowing up in a military family helped prepare Cassie Neal for success as a real estate agent.

One of the first things you notice about Cassie Neal is her infectious, high energy level. A friendly go-getter with a knack for perseverance, she shined through the intensity of 2021, the most successful of her 20-year real estate career. “I enjoy the fast-paced nature of the business,” she says. “It keeps me on my toes because I'm learning new things all the time that will only make me more valuable to my next client. Some deals are more complicated than others, but it always gives me great personal satisfaction to write up a deal and see it through to closing.” A self-proclaimed “military brat,” (her father and stepmother served in the U.S. Air Force, with her father retiring after 20 years of service), Cassie’s ability to meet new people and quickly connect with them is finely tuned. Born in Germany, Cassie spent her childhood experiencing new starts in beautiful places, from Alaska to Florida. She attended high school in Mesa, Ariz., before launching her real estate career. “Growing up with a military family lifestyle and moving frequently allowed me to see things from different perspectives and relate to people from different places and backgrounds,” she says. “I’m truly interested in people. You start talking to people and you realize it’s actually a very small world.” While serving as a receptionist at a Cashiers real estate firm many years ago, Cassie realized

the better fit would be working as an agent. Her passion for working with people, discovering what they are looking for, and then finding it for them would harness her skills and talents in a way that was fulfilling—and fun. “It’s like playing matchmaker between properties and clients,” she says. “Along the way, I have met so many wonderful people who I otherwise never would have met.” The broad reach of Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s marketing platform and the opportunity to work with “all kinds of people from all kinds of places” drew her to the company several years ago. Her direct experience with real estate marketing, coupled with two decades of dedication to the area, makes her an asset to anyone looking to purchase or sell. Always eager to learn and give back, she recently completed her term serving as a director on the HighlandsCashiers Multiple Listing Service (MLS) board. When she’s not serving her clients or community, Cassie enjoys spending time with her family— including 13-year-old son, Jalen, six-year-old daughter, Cadence, and their Dad, Jeremy. The foursome is often found walking, fishing, and boating on beautiful Lake Fairfield. A black Labrador Retriever, a Yorkshire Terrier, and two cats complete the family. Cassie also enjoys culinary activities—baking, cooking, and dining out with friends—as well as exercising and shopping. NC Living sat down with Cassie to learn more about this dynamic agent.

“You start talking to people and you realize it’s actually a very small world.” Why did you choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group? I like the intimate nature of the company—locally owned, not too large, and personal. I also like the marketing and what the firm has to offer me, as an agent, that allows me to focus on listing and selling properties with an excellent team backing me up. With my experience and an exceptional company, I am able to provide an exceptional experience for my clients.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while working as a broker? If you don’t know the answer to something, ask; don’t guess. Always verify and always check your facts, so you’re fulfilling your fiduciary duty to your clients—whether they’re a buyer or a seller— to the best of your ability.

What is a non-profit in the area you are passionate about and why? One of the charitable organizations that I am very passionate about is the Operation Christmas Box drive that the HighlandsCashiers Board of Realtors, the Jackson County Department of Aging, and the Senior Centers coordinate every year. Many of us real estate agents get together and volunteer to donate, putting together boxes of food, other essentials, and comfort items and then distributing these to the seniors in our area who have limited income. S ILVER CR E EK REA L ESTAT E G R O UP

This past year, I involved my daughter in the process to share the joy of giving with her, as well. We had a great time picking out candles and chocolate Santas and reindeers to add a little holiday joy to the boxes.

If someone is spending only a day on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, what would you say is the no. 1 “must do?” I would highly suggest taking a hike to see the beautiful views in the area! The Whiteside Mountain hike is a great option for this, but there are tons of great hikes that offer amazing mountain and waterfall views, too.

Currently, what is your favorite Plateau restaurant? This is a tough question because there are so many great restaurants in our area. But I can narrow it down to two and those are Chili Loco in Cashiers and Mica’s in Sapphire, where I always get the personal size White Pizza and it’s amazing!

What is your favorite season on the Plateau and why? I definitely choose fall, because there's really nothing quite like driving and enjoying the vibrant colors as the leaves are falling all around you!

What is your favorite festival or special event on the Plateau and why? I really enjoy seeing the Outhouse Races held every year at Ski Sapphire. It's a very comical event to watch and everyone is laughing and having such a great time.

What are your goals for 2022? The past year has been busier and more fastpaced than previous years. I exceeded my goal for 2021 and keep raising the bar every year. So, for 2022, I want to build on this success.

What was your first live concert? My first concert was in Phoenix, Ariz., while in high school and, actually, it was a combination of several groups including Boyz II Men, K-Ci & JoJo, and some other groups I don’t recall now. It was an amazing concert!

What is the best live concert you’ve ever attended? I would have to say the best concert I've ever seen featured George Strait, Reba McEntire, The Dixie Chicks, and a few others. This was at the Clemson University Stadium many years ago, but it was a blast. I couldn't believe how great they sounded live! George and Reba are the all-time greatest singers ever in my book.

I really enjoy seeing the Outhouse Races held every year at Ski Sapphire (on February 19). It's a very comical event to watch and everyone is laughing and having such a great time.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Outside of our Plateau, where is your favorite place to travel and visit?

I was actually born in Landstuhl, Germany. My Dad was stationed at their military Air Force base at the time, but my family came back to the states when I was only two years old. I would love to go there for a visit someday, just to explore the area.

Generally, my favorite place to visit is usually anywhere in the Western U.S. Having grown up on that side of the country for part of my life, I do miss the scenery from time to time. Luckily for me, most of my family now lives out west now, so I try to visit at least once a year or so.

What is your favorite design trend of the moment?

What is the last book you read or a book you recommend?

The white shiplap look with grays mixed in is really my favorite look right now. I'm not sure if there is a specific name for this style, but at my house I call it, “Country Chic."

With two kids and a full-time career, I don't have much time to read! However, one book that I have read and would recommend that everyone read at least once in their life (or maybe several times) is, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" [by Stephen R. Covey]. That's one that I really connected with, and I think most people would, too.

Tuckasegee Sitting in the middle of this beautiful mountain lake, Bear Lake Heaven Island is truly a unique opportunity. Bear Lake is a pristine lake at 2,600 feet elevation located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. With 22 miles of shoreline, much of which is National Forest, Bear Lake is perfect for enjoying all the water sports or simply a slow evening cruise. There’s no need to hop in a boat to reach this island, because there’s a causeway for easy access to your property. The island has underground power, a 12 GPM well, an installed 12-bedroom septic system, high-speed internet, two large docks, and 1,500 feet of shoreline. Unlike most property on the lake, which requires a building set-back, your property line ends at the water’s edge. Take in spectacular lake and mountain views in every direction. Three-fourths of the island has been cleared and leveled; a trail, wide enough for a vehicle, circles the perimeter of the island. The entire lake frontage has been fortified with a rock wall to prevent any erosion. The property could be subdivided, making it a great site for a lodge, or it could be the most private of estate sites. Having a helicopter is no problem with the easy approach and a great landing site. This is a once-in-a-lifetime property. MLS# 97761 | Offered at $2,950,000 | Tuckasegee NC L IVI N G WINTE R 2022
