Welcome A very warm welcome to you all on our fourth issue. Firstly may I thank all advertisers, sponsors, and participants who have made Issue 4 a reality. Time really does fly. As I am writing this we are already making preparations for our first anniversary issue due out in September 2013. Watch this space for a very special announcement about the first anniversary networking event. The magazine is fast becoming a “household name” within the Tendring Business Community and we are receiving new enquiries on a regular basis with new companies wishing to advertise or participate in the growth of the publication. The publication is also being read “outside” Tendring and we continue to get enquiries from Ipswich, Chelmsford, Witham, and even London, about advertising. Although I hate to turn down potential advertisers the magazine remains exclusively for Tendring businesses. I would also like to welcome Robert Wong on board as the TBCM official photographer. Robert is well known in the commercial photography world and is a great addition to the team. Our last networking event was held at the Colne Yacht Club in Brightlingsea and was attended by over 26 businesses.

As said from the outset we are moving the networking event around Tendring and the venue for the next event is at The Harbour Lights Restaurant on Friday 19th July 2013 (please see back cover for more details etc.). Thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the Harbour Lights for breakfast at our next, informal networking event. The first anniversary issue (Issue 5) will be out in early September 2013. Please look out for the “special announcement” about our 1st anniversary celebration to which you will all be invited. For more information please feel free to contact me at any time via email kevin@tbcm.info. Kevin Barnes Co-Founder Tendring Business Community Magazine

Doing Things Differently

I

t’s usually the people who do things differently that make the most impact. It’s the inventors, the pioneers and the rebels who change the world and go down in history. But it’s scary doing things differently to how other people are doing them, isn’t it? It means standing out there by yourself. It means doing things in ways you haven’t tried and tested before, because new things are, by their very nature, well… new.

5/2013 23:12 Page 1

But if you don’t try new things sometimes you’re likely to stay exactly where you are. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing. But other times, staying the same can be the absolute worst thing for you and your business.

Sometimes we have to ask ourselves honest questions about how happy we are with the way things are going. Maybe we’re tired of getting the same old lack-lustre job applicants coming for interviews, or our sales have reached a plateau. We might look around and think, ‘Well, I’m doing what everyone else is.’ But that’s exactly the problem.

J.C. Piech

Instead of writing the same old boring job descriptions that ask your new candidates to be exactly like the last one (you know, the one who just left or got fired), you can have a fresh think about the type of person you’re open to hiring. Maybe someone a little different would be better this time. Maybe someone with some new ideas? Or if your sales have reached a brick wall, instead of selling harder in the same ways you’ve always done, try new avenues. Ask yourself where your potential and existing customers hang out online, and go talk to them. On Twitter, Facebook, blogs, wherever. They’re already there, why not go and join them? Business is changing more rapidly than ever. That means you can’t afford to be afraid of doing things differently. But never fear; you’re a creative, innovative person. You wouldn’t be running a business if you weren’t. So what are you waiting for? Get your thinking cap on! JC Piech is a writer and creative confidence mentor. She runs a creative writing group in Thorpe-le-Soken, and works as a freelance editor and proofreader. For more info on her writing services please visit her blog: jcpiech.blogspot.com, or contact jc.piech@yahoo.co.uk

Maybe to get better applicants applying for your positions, you’ve got to change the way you advertise your jobs.

Beware the ill-considered email

E

ven if your business has just one employee you will know that when it comes to Employment the law is constantly changing. In what we hope will become a regular feature for TBCM, Richard Porter, Thompson Smith and Puxon’s (TSP) Head of Employment Law, will share an Employment Law tip with TBCM readers.

This issue’s tip is taken from an article Richard has written entitled “Beware the ill-considered email”. We all now wonder how we ever survived without email. Modern pressures of time and location will often lead senior managers to despatch a quick confidential email about an employee which is intended for the recipient’s eyes only. However, notwithstanding the best of intentions, higher rules apply. If the employee makes a “subject access request” under the Data Protection Act or issues a questionnaire under the Equality Act or subsequently takes the employer to an Employment Tribunal, the email may have to be produced. TIP: All managers should be taught that they should not commit anything to writing unless they are prepared to answer questions about it in an Employment Tribunal.

Issue 4 June 2013 / August 2013

Richard’s article - which also details when certain communications may be privileged against disclosure - as well as a number of checklists and updates covering all areas of employment law, can be viewed or downloaded from the TSP website at www.tsplegal.com. Richard and the TSP Employment team work closely with businesses of all sizes to ensure that they are operating in accordance with the current legal requirements. The team can help with practical advice on a wide range of policies and procedures, from employers’ documentation such as contracts of employment to advising on employee disputes. The TSP Employment Law Retainer Agreement is designed to prevent employment difficulties occurring in the first place. The service provides all of the employment law advice and assistance needed to ensure the smooth day-to-day management of your business. For more information on any of the topics contained in this article contact Nicola Crisell on 01255 221919 or email ncrisell@tsplegal.com

Press Release

15 May 2013

CWind places second order for CTruk’s swath workboat CWind has placed an order for a second CWhisper SWATH, an innovative 19.5m composite workboat designed and built by Essex-based CTruk. CWind Astute, which features CTruk’s patent-applied moveable wheelhouse and pod system, launched in August last year and underwent sea trials before starting work on contract to Siemens on the London Array Offshore Wind Farm. Peter Jørgensen, CWind managing director, commented, “The SWATH significantly increases the wave height limits for technician transfer, keeping weather days to a minimum. That and an impressive measured fuel consumption of 100 litres per hour at 20 knots made her an effective vessel. As we expand our services to other offshore wind farms around the UK and Europe, we are keen to offer these benefits further afield, and a second SWATH will enable us to do that. The SWATH hull form, designed to cut through the waves rather than ride over them, dramatically improves transit comfort even in rough seas, an important factor for technicians who face a tough commute and need to arrive in fit shape to scale the turbines for work. CTruk is refining the design to optimise performance and sea keeping for this second-in-class CWhisper SWATH, with delivery expected at the end of November 2013.

Networking

A

s we move in to a more digitally focused communication era it seems that we, as humans, need to reach out and connect on a more personal level not only in our private lives but in business too. There are many types of networking groups from the exclusive clubs to the inclusive relaxed organisations. An exclusive club will offer you the benefits of a regular (sometimes weekly) networking event where you will be the only representative of your trade. You will have to speak at every event and will be expected to deliver referrals at each meeting. Some clubs also expect you to attend every event and if you are unable to, you will have to send a representative of your organisation in your place. There is normally an annual fee for these types of clubs and you will be expected to pay for every event also. These are great if you want the exclusivity and need the structure of these organisations to help build your business with the referrals you will receive. An inclusive group allows all comers and offers an opportunity for a person to network in a relaxed environment without the pressure to buy. It gives a person the flexibility within their calender that the dynamics of life can sometimes disrupt and helps to build the confidence that will move you and your organisation forward.

You first need to decide what it is you want to achieve as a result of joining a group and what your motivation is. Simply stating that you want sales and your motivation is money will not create the network of contacts that will generate leads or establish a solid foundation for future prospects. The networker intent on sales alone will push potential contacts and clients away. A better approach is to engage each new contact at a networking group and listen to what they have to say, build trust and create a friendship. Throughout the many years that I have been networking I very seldom overhear a conversation that is purely about buying or selling. Networking creates an environment that generates comfortable business relationships that lead to trade and referrals from your connections. To really kick start your network be sure to use the services of as many of your connections as possible. They in turn will be more likely to use your products or services when they need them. I can only speak from my own experiences and say that without networking and constant communication within my network I would not be self employed today! Jamesons - your most trusted business advisor

F

orward thinking and innovative - these are the words most readily associated with Jamesons. The business was founded in 1935 and over the past 60 years has grown into the largest independent accountancy firm in the Tendring area, giving it a unique position in the local business community. The Jamesons corporate identity is very different to the more traditional image usually associated with chartered accountants, and is a reflection of their proactive approach to the needs of its clients. This holistic approach means that they will listen to what their clients say and tailor an individual solution to meet their requirements. The experienced Jamesons team offers a wide range of skills enabling them to meet the financial needs of businesses and taxpayers. The latest initiative is the “Be your own Boss” informal drop in clinic which will be held every second Wednesday of each month from 2.30pm at Jamesons offices.
