We’ve got you

covered! ...over the festive season and new year The new business networking magazine for the Tendring Peninsular

Welcome A seasonal welcome message from Kevin Barnes, Managing Director TBCM Hello and welcome back to our second issue of the Tendring Business Community Magazine. I would like to thank all the advertisers, sponsors, and participants who, without their tremendous support and encouragement, have made the second issue possible! As said in the first issue, it is amazing to find so many successful companies in the Tendring area that go about their business without the recognition they deserve. Companies such as C Truk , based in Brightlingsea, who invited us to the launch of their latest commission, The SC Buzzard, which is a purpose built vessel working with the off shore wind energy companies. We had a fantastic afternoon on board and were there for the dedicated naming ceremony. C Truk are just one of the success stories Tendring has to offer. We had our first networking event at the Kingscliff Hotel in October and had over 25 attendees. As it was our first event we tried some different variations on a networking event. After feedback from all attendees, the general consensus is to have a very informal and relaxed event.

think might be relevant. Good or bad, we are always ready to take on board any comments made. After all, it is for you the Tendring Business Community that we are servicing. Our second networking event will be on the 25th of January 2013, at the Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing club aboard the LBK 6 “Clubhouse”. This is a World War 2 vessel that has been converted into a super clubhouse. Please visit www.hdsc.org.uk to view this historic vessel. It is the only one in existence and promises to be a truly unique experience. (please see outer back cover for more information, We promised we would move the event around Tendring, and this we will be continuing to do on a regular basis. As it is the season of goodwill I would like, on behalf of my team, wish you all a truly Happy Christmas and a very, very, prosperous New Year. Thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you in Harwich for breakfast at our next, informal networking event. The next issue (Issue 3) will be out in early March 2013.

There was an open and frank discussion on what they liked/disliked about the magazine.

For more information please feel free to contact me at any time.

We listened and have made some significant changes to the look and feel of the magazine.

What makes a good guru

F

rom an early age I have shown hippy tendencies. Around the age of six or seven I liked crystals, wind chimes, and then a little later, incense. When I was in my teens I started exploring meditation and books on Eastern spirituality and New Age thinking.

What does any of this have to do with business, you may ask? Well, during that time I have come to understand what makes a good guru, and perhaps more to the point, what makes a bad one. And I believe that what makes a useful spiritual mentor is similar to that which makes a useful one in business too. We live in the age of the personal development guru and the business coach. There is an over-abundance of techniques, step-by-step guides, workshops, courses – many of which come with a pretty hefty price tag. But how can we tell when a guru really has our well-being in mind, or whether they’re just out to make a quick buck? The answer lies in one simple question: Are they helping me be myself? Some coaches are open about the fact that all they are giving is knowledge. That’s great. But many claim to be able

Author: J C Piech

to transform our lives, and that requires a whole lot more than knowledge alone. To genuinely improve our lives, a ‘guru’ must be able to coach us in how to become more centred in who we are. The Indian mystic and spiritual teacher, Osho, put it this way: “The guru is one who pulls you towards himself just to throw you back into your own being.” Why is it so important for a mentor to bring us back to ourselves? Because the most exciting business people are those whose true essence shines through in everything they do. When they care, we care. So when we find ourselves in the over-populated world of coaches and mentors, we can use this simple question to guide us to the right guide: Are they teaching us how to be more like them, or more like us? JC Piech is an author, content writer and creative confidence mentor. She runs a creative writing group in Thorpe-le-Soken, and works as a freelance writer, editor and proofreader. Network Marketing - A different way of working

I

t’s been called the business of the 21st century. Network marketing, also known as team marketing, multi level marketing or direct selling, has shaken off the stigma of pyramid selling and come of age.

Part time as an additional income, or to fit around family or other commitments, to add value to an existing business, or as a full time career move, the business is flexible enough to suit individual life styles and needs. The key is to find something that you are passionate about.

In the UK over 400,000 people are involved and it is the largest provider of part time income opportunities in the country. The UK market is worth £2 billion annually, and worldwide, network marketing businesses are worth more than a hundred billion dollars. Traditionally thought of as a job mainly for women, last year saw a massive increase in men entering the direct selling market and an equally large increase in the over 50’s.

A few suggestions when choosing a company to work with. Make sure they are reputable with a history of growth and stability. If they belong to the DSA then you know that they conform to their strict code of ethics. Find a company with excellent products or services that you would be happy to use and recommend. Consumable products or services are useful as you then get repeat custom without having to find new customers all the time. Check out the level of training and support that will be available to you. Most importantly, make sure that it is something that you will enjoy doing and has the potential to achieve the results you desire.

The Direct Selling Association, the governing body for network marketing organisations, lists over 40 different registered and approved companies ranging from cosmetics to telecommunications. With jobs in employment becoming a scarce commodity more and more people are turning to becoming self employed. By buying into an existing company, as a kind of mini franchise, some of the headaches of running your own business are taken care of. Start up costs are low, you have a ready made product range, your marketing and sales plans are in place, and if you choose the right company you will have access to plenty of training. People join network marketing for many different reasons.

PRESS RELEASE

CTruk export order delivered to Sima Charters of Holland

D

utch-owned Sima Charters has taken delivery of the latest vessel to join its fleet, a CTruk 20T multi-purpose catamaran. Sporting Sima Charters’ eye-catching yellow and blue livery, SC Buzzard is the tenth vessel to be completed at the Brightlingsea yard in two years. The relationship between Sima Charters and CTruk had an interesting start, with one being in part responsible for the existence of the other. CTruk chairman Andy White recalls being out with friends on a sailing smack near Gunfleet Sands wind farm in 2009 when a Sima Charters vessel passed them, knocking the wind from their sails. Intrigued as to why there were no locally-built and operated vessels at work in this burgeoning industry, Andy and Ben Simpson, MD, later founded CTruk Boats on the site of the old Aldous shipyard in Brightlingsea, bringing the town’s shipbuilding heritage back to life. It is testament to CTruk’s continued effort to improve on the current market offering that Sima Charters later contacted the company in 2011 and ordered one of their 20 tonne payload multi-purpose catamarans to join its growing fleet. Anecdotes aside, Ruud Lievaart, owner of Sima Charters and seasoned vessel operator, recalls his early interest in CTruk, “I was impressed with their drive to innovate in this sector. The weight-saving on CTruk’s composite cats makes it possible for us to offer robust workboats that are extremely fuel efficient. In today’s offshore wind support market that is a contract-winning factor.” With fuel costs spiralling and increasingly stringent environmental regulations affecting marine communities, the need to conserve vessel energy is a key consideration for ship and boat operators. Andy White explained how the company’s offering ticks this important box, “CTruk’s resin infusion composite construction process saves up to 40%

6

on weight and enhances hydrodynamic shape, resulting in these vessels burning around 50% less fuel than an equivalent aluminium crew boat.” SC Buzzard was officially named at an informal gathering in Brightlingsea on Friday 2 November. She features the patent-applied flexible pod system developed by CTruk to enhance versatility as well as a large volume fuel transfer system. The 18.5m catamaran is likely to start her working life in UK waters, possibly moving on to Belgian or German offshore projects next year.

About CTruk www.ctruk.com Established in 2010, the CTruk team is locally-based with a long history of working and sailing on the UK’s east coast. The company prides itself on building safer, faster, better and more cost-effective composite work vessels with applications in the offshore wind, military and security, expedition yacht and commercial sectors. CTruk takes an innovative approach to design and build and uses vacuum infusion to build composite boats to the highest standards. The CTruk team of some 35 technicians has built nine 20T MPCs since its launch.

About Sima Charters www.simacharters.com Sima Charters specialises in tender services in the North Sea as well as chartering crew boats on various offshore projects in Europe. SC Buzzard brings the total number of vessels in the Sima Charters fleet to seven and is the company’s first catamaran. All Sima Charters’ vessels can transport up to twelve passengers and cargo or luggage to other vessels, wind turbines and other offshore structures.

FOCUS ON

Dura Composites ...designed for the future Dura Composites…mixing corporate ideas & meticulous planning with the flexibility of a SME.

D

ura Composites, founded in 1996, has evolved over the past few years into a truly international player, supplying world class products from its’ HQ in Clacton-on-Sea. We met Stuart Burns, Managing Director of Dura Composites to find out more. The first thing that strikes you as you walk into the Sales Office is the vibrancy of the staff and the obvious enthusiasm that Stuart and his management team have for the company. It is clear from the start that Stuart is very passionate and proud of Dura and its’ on-going success and growth. The company currently employs 36 people and has plans for expansion in both the UK and export markets. Since it was founded, Dura Composites has been manufacturing fibreglass anti-slip structural flooring that is strong yet lightweight, fire resistant and needs only

minimal maintenance throughout its life span – it also has the added benefit of being corrosion resistant unlike metal alternatives. More recently the business has expanded into timber composites, which is a fusion of recycled wood and plastic. The product is eco- friendly, with a traditional wood appearance, and virtually maintenance free. These decking and cladding products require no staining or painting and come with a warranty of up to 12 years in commercial installations and up to 25 years in domestic installs. This range has boomed in popularity, offering an attractive alternative to natural wood products on the market. Dura Composites supplies its flooring and façade products to four sectors- Industrial, Marine, Landscaping and Architectural. Customers can range from major contractors, architects and specifiers to local landscapers and gardeners. In fact, what many people don’t know is that Dura Composites are very happy to supply to the general public as well.

LANDSCAPING

Dura Composites offers a range of alternatives to traditional building materials such as concrete, wood and steel. For example, its’ Dura Slab product provides a perfect replacement for concrete access covers over trenches or gullies because it is strong enough for vehicles or people to traverse across it but light enough to be lifted by hand. Dura Slab is around three times lighter than its concrete equivalent and has an anti-slip surface. Upon heavy loading it is designed to reform to its natural state, whereas concrete is prone to cracking over time and steel products will permanently bend. It is also an ideal product to be used in places like National Grid electricity sub stations because it doesn't conduct electricity and does not corrode.

Dura Composites offers a range of timber composite decking, hand-railing and pergolas. Its Dura Tile product is ideally suited to DIYers. It is made of composite timber and has its own plastic base that is flexible and therefore ideal where the surface is a little uneven. There is no need for a sub frame and it can be laid directly onto a balcony, roof terraces or patios over old slabs. Landscapers and developers also love to use it for roof terraces and balconies.

“The Dura Tile is ideally suited to DIYers. It can be laid directly onto a balcony, roof terrace or patio”

ARCHITECTURAL The company also supply a revolutionary cladding product. The eco-friendly Dura Cladding was an ideal material to use for the Lanswood Business Park project. The product doesn't suffer from colour fade like natural wood so it is ideal for phased projects such as this.

MARINE Dura Composites is a market leading brand in the Marine market. It offers a range of anti-slip deck products and accessories ideal for installation on pontoons, jetties and gangways in commercial or leisure marine environments.

Dura Composites has been giving back to the local community. The company recently donated a timber composite deck to a good local cause. St Clare's Nursery in Clacton now has the benefit of an all-weather outdoor play area that was previously muddy and could only be used for a few months of the year. Dura Composites is now the first timber composite company in the world to gain FSC 100% approval. All the wood that is used for their decking and cladding products now comes from sustainable forestry. The company has distributors within the UK and globally. Its distributor in the Middle East supplies products to United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain. Distributors are also in place in Perth, Australia and Italy and the company has plans for this growth to continue.

consortium of local employers and other partners brought together by A J Woods Engineering and Colchester Institute have heard the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has approved its pilot bid “Energising Harwich – a Passport to Work” across the Haven Gateway low carbon supply chain. The announcement was made on Tuesday 11 September by Business Secretary Vince Cable at the launch of the Government’s Industrial Strategy at Imperial College, London. The bid was submitted in response to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills announcement that up to £250 million of Employer Ownership of Skills Fund would be available over the next two years and that it was looking for innovative propositions from employers. The Employer Ownership pilot routes public investment directly to employers – enabling them to invest in the training and skills development they need to grow their business. A J Woods invited Colchester Institute, with its strong reputation of delivering high quality education, training and apprenticeships in collaboration with employers, to help form the consortium. The consortium of local employers led by A J Woods Engineering is looking at the opportunity to expand business and create more local jobs in an area that has suffered from high unemployment in recent years. The consortium of employers and supporters include the following: A J Woods Engineering Limited, Colchester Institute, CCL UK Ltd, F T Marine Ltd, EPC group, Pontoon Hire Ltd, Precision Navigation, Dalby Offshore Renewables Ltd, Sailspar Ltd, Dunninghams Ltd, Harwich Mayflower Project, Foxes Marina Ltd, Harwich and Dovercourt High School, Job Centre Plus, Tendring District Council, Essex County Council, SEMTA and Haven Gateway Partnership The project itself will focus on Harwich’s role as the UK’s biggest wind port. It has become the installation base for the Gunfleet Sands and Greater Gabbard offshore wind farms. Negotiations are currently underway for Round 3 offshore wind farms which will be the biggest development yet in the world. The challenge is to ensure that local people have the necessary skills and qualifications for

PRESS RELEASE

Consortium wins share of Government funds to ‘energise’ Harwich employment by the major contractors working on the planned construction of the East Anglia One Wind Farm, scheduled to commence in 2015. Tony Woods Managing Director of AJ Woods Engineering Ltd said “I am pleased that the Government is listening to Industry, as it is the employers that really understand what is needed and can add true value to funding for training. As I am Harwich born and bred, it means a lot to me that my company is able to help the people of the area by giving them the opportunity to take part in meaningful training to help them gain jobs in industry. We have already made substantial investment in training and have just opened a state of the art Training Tower together with a Confined Spaces training facility in Harwich”. Danny Clough, Principal and Chief Executive for Colchester Institute said, “With 269 bids for this pilot funding, we are very pleased that the Energising Harwich funding bid caught the imagination of UKCES who were demanding innovative ideas to build workforce capability. We are hopeful that this initiative proves to be successful, and alongside delivery of the Energy Skills Centre at Harwich later this year, will be the catalyst for other local initiatives to stimulate economic regeneration in Harwich and across Tendring.” As a result of the bid it is hoped that several hundred of the local workforce will gain the opportunity of specialist training to enable them to gain employment especially in the Offshore Wind Energy Sector and energise local businesses to prepare them to win forthcoming contracts in the energy industry.
