Silvermine is soaring to its centennial in 2022 with new plans and programs to be unveiled each year. The last 12 months were exciting and inspiring as we reinvigorated our base and added talented people to our Board, Guild, Students & Faculty, Staff and Friends. Silvermine stands on a rich history of artists and art luminaries – including Milton Avery, Joseph Albers, Christo and Jean Claude, Louise Nevelson – many more. This year Silvermine christened its annual Legacy of Silvermine Exhibition honoring 18 longtime Guild artists. Not only are these artists nationally and internationally acclaimed, but they have each been instrumental in their service to Silvermine. The names known in the future will include names that are part of Silvermine today. Tonight we recognize the contributions of four Silvermine Guild members. The award recipients each have played a principal role in Silvermine’s powerful legacy and are actively involved in forging its future – making a difference in all that they do. Please join me in honoring this year’s recipients: Living Art Award – Lifetime of Achievement in Fine Arts: David Dunlop, Guild Artist, cherished instructor, former board member, Emmy Award winning writer. Legacy Award: Ann Weiner, Guild artist, former board member and philanthropist. Artist Awards: Bonnie Woit, Guild Artist, Former Board member and Founder of the Institute for Visual Artists (IVA). Alberta Cifolelli, Guild Artist, educator and former Chair of IVA series. This year’s Living Art Awards benefit is made possible by the dedicated efforts of the co-chairs: Kerry Brock, Mindy Green, Stephanie Joyce and Faye Mylan and the hard-working passionate committee listed in the rear of the program and YOU. You are all part of the Silvermine family. Your generosity and passion creates the model for Silvermine’s next century. The board and I deeply thank you for your continued commitment and support. Have a wonderful evening knowing it is YOU that makes it all possible. Sincerely, Rose-Marie Fox, Board Chair
May 13, 2017 The Silvermine Arts Center 1037 Silvermine Road New Canaan, CT 06840 Dear Assembled Guests and Friends of the Silvermine Arts Center, Thank you for the opportunity to share my enthusiastic support of the Silvermine Arts Center. I am excited to be with you this evening. Silvermine is a great friend to aspiring and established artists alike in the Fairfield County area- and your stewardship should not go unnoticed. Now more than ever, the preservation of and the support of the arts is critical. Silvermine remains one of the proud curators of the unique arts environment Fairfield County possesses. On a more personal level, I am proud to display (on long term loan) stunning artwork from the Center on my walls in my offices at the Capitol. To me, artwork in public spaces is so important, and I am deeply proud to help showcase the works of Silvermine’s wonderful artists in our capitol city. Best wishes on what I imagine will be a great evening. Sincerely,
Bob Duff Senate Majority Leader
Gil & Ann Maurer, along with Meredith & Jeff Hutchison and The Maurer Family Foundation, congratulate Silvermine Arts Center and its distinguished history of support of art and New England artists.

Dear Friends, On behalf of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, it is with great pride that I welcome everyone to the 2nd Annual Living Art Awards and Benefit, and honor the Silvermine Arts Center for 95 years of bringing art to life in New Canaan and Fairfield County. Also I congratulate the Honorees, David Dunlop, Ann Weiner, Bonnie Ford Woit and Alberta Cifolelli, on their extraordinary accomplishments as they have enriched our lives with their talent and vision. DAVIDISMS Simplicity carries the day. Chance is always your dancing partner. There’s no cheating in art. You are painting a poem, not a police report. Water doesn’t have to be blue, neither does the sky! Value of exaggeration gives paintings lots of attention. Radial burst design gives us opportunities to fill in and guess. Foreshortening allows us to communicate space. Invoke the muse! Be unencumbered by expectation. Road to greatness and stardom is not wanting it. A dark threshold allows us to step into the painting. Overlapping trumps all forms of perspective. A pitched plane excites us. We are contour detectors...it happens in our brain, not our eyes. If I don’t startle you, I’m not doing a good job of teaching. Which came first, the chicken or the gamboge? A wave is a prism. Potato shape is icon for a cloud: don’t paint potatoes! A new view of the world came with the advent of ballooning. Mist has occluding effect over space. Sparkle is a Dutch word. Sparkle will always be be whiter than glow. Paint with a touch of insouciance and a little élan on the side. More mystery, more guessing! Follow the paint, not the photo. New ideas come when you use a different brush. The softer the edge, the greater the volume. The quicksand of iconic thinking will drag you down. Everything you know, you make too big. If you don’t know linear perspective, you can’t get out of the parking lot! Buy good paints. Play the “air guitar” with paint. Turner’s paintings are almost all suggestion. Vermeer used the camera obscura, if he had Photoshop, he would’ve used it. If you don’t love it, don’t paint it, marry it, or buy it! Smile while you work, it matters.
Thank you for your virtuosity. All the best to you and Rebecca, Dotti Bryant and Ruth Obernbreit

LIVING ART AWARD
David Dunlop David Dunlop is a renowned landscape painter, educator and television host/producer whose humility defies his resume. He is the winner of a Daytime Emmy Award for the PBS television series Landscapes Through Time, has lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and conducts workshops around the world. A faculty member for the past 23 years, Dunlop views Silvermine as the nexus of his artistic life and career. He teaches both practical and creative art-making skills with generosity of spirit that engages the most timid student. Through nurturing other artists Dunlop finds his own inspiration. “It’s the feedback loop. I give and they give right back. If you want to network, communicate, share and test new ideas — this is the place. We build community here.” Dunlop’s legendary classes fill immediately every term with long waiting lists. Forever a scholar, Dunlop seeks to understand the underlying principles of art by exploring original sources coupled with advances in neuroscience, a focus reflected in lectures including “The Eye of the Cat vs. the Eye of the Artist: How Vision & Thought Work“ and “How Art Invented God, The Devil, Angels, Heaven & Hell”. His work is held in public and private collections around the world Silvermine is deeply indebted to David Dunlop for selflessly sharing his brilliance with thousands of students; dedicating countless hours co-chairing the Silvermine Board of Trustees; and promoting his core belief that we are all connected — thus, everyone is an artist.
LEGACY AWARD
Ann Weiner Ann Weiner is a conceptual multi-disciplinary artist. Her latest art installation features eight life-size steel sculptures representing currentday women who have suffered abuse and then heroically worked on behalf of other women still at risk. This human rights exhibit opens January 26, 2018 at the Housatonic Museum. Referring to art making,” I am humbled by the knowledge that a force greater than myself was responsible for its creation, the work is from another place. I am just a vehicle of expression." Ann is also an active philanthropist, providing support and resources to Silvermine over the years. “I give because I have a strong belief that life without art would be a brutal place. Art enriches, it's a gift, a place to put our energy. In my life, art has been a lifeline." With her late husband Sid, Ann has made significant contributions to Art Partners, the Guild and Galleries, and to the School of Art, they helped establish a woodworking studio. She has selflessly given her time and energy serving as Governance Chair on the board for 7 years and authoring a book on Silvermine’s history for its 90th anniversary celebration. Silvermine is forever grateful for Ann’s relentless and thoughtful support of arts in education and outreach and for an artistic vision in which all humans are equal and the unsung extraordinary, recognized.
ARTISTS AWARD
Alberta Cifolelli Alberta Cifolelli is best known for her paintings and works on paper using nature as a symbolic or metaphoric form. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Japan, she’s featured in 300+ public collections including the United Nations, Vassar College, The Butler Institute of American Art, the National Museum of Women in Art, and the Erie Art Museum. Cifolelli recently exhibited at the “Legacy of Silvermine: Artists, Art, and Community” and has a solo exhibition opening in 2018 at The City University of New York. Cifolelli’s fine arts career is rivaled only by her esteemed teaching career. In addition to serving as Arts Department Chair for the Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, she taught at Housatonic Community College, Kent State University, Sacred Heart University, The Cleveland Institute of Art, and for the National Endowment of the Arts program, Interarts. From 1989-1995, Cifolelli served as Chair of Silvermine’s Institute for Visual Artists, a monthly lecture series, with panelists discussing, for example, Humor, Activist Art, and the Psychology of Creativity. She also served on Silvermine’s Board of Trustees and as Gallery Chair for many years. In 2007, Cifolelli was named a Cleveland Institute of Arts Distinguished Alumni, in celebration of the Institute's 125th Anniversary. Silvermine heartily thanks Alberta Cifolelli, (aka “the Italian Workhorse”), for sharing her immense talents, her unbridled spirit, and her lifelong passion for each of us to “express ourselves honestly and creatively” because “art belongs to everyone. It does.”
ARTISTS AWARD
Bonnie Ford Woit Bonnie Ford Woit is best known for large abstract paintings that draw inspiration from looking up into trees. More recently, she carves in wood and makes prints, uniting her inspiration from trees with the grain and knots of the wood. Woit’s illustrious career includes solo shows at Ingber Gallery in New York City and the U.S. Embassy in Paris and group shows at the United Nations Headquarters, Gallery Bai, and the Dubai Biennial. Her works are in international private and corporate collections including IBM, Banker’s Trust, and Orient Express. Recent shows include “Legacy of Silvermine: Artists, Art, and Community” and “Looking Up” at Central Booking in the Lower East Side. Woit is the visionary founder of the Institute for Visual Artists, the art community outreach program she established at Silvermine in 1985. This thriving monthly lecture series for artists and interested public attracted regional artists, curators, critics, and luminaries of the art world, such as Will Barnett, Lester Johnson, William Zimmer, Alex Katz, and Robert Altman. We are eternally grateful to Woit for the Institute for Visual Artists, “ a place for art and cultural discourse” for eighteen years…” solidifying an important bridge between artists, young and old, male and female, established and emerging.” Woit, who served as Vice Chair on the Board of Trustees for many years, continues to work towards securing “ a place for artists” at Silvermine. Though she moved from Connecticut to New York City more than three decades ago, Woit maintains a solid and vital connection to Silvermine and continues to be a passionate advocate for artists.
Congratulations to all the honorees, dear friends and wonderful artists

The average man puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes off its hat to those who put in more than 50% of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100%. The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?
