Congratulations to Roz Chast! On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Guild of Artists, faculty and staff, it is an honor and a privilege to recognize Roz Chast with Silvermine Arts Center’s first Living Art Award for life-time achievement in magazine cartoon art and illustrated literature. Her art truly embodies the essence of Living Art. Creatively expressing her perceptive observations of life, she animates them with a fine hand, humor and sensitivity. Through art, she has connected with and delighted millions. Roz has received numerous prestigious awards for her work as cartoonist as well as best-selling author. We are proud to add Silvermine to her esteemed list! In addition, Roz has been an avid supporter of Silvermine over the years, and for this she is being newly appointed as a permanent “honorary member” of the Silvermine Arts Center. We are fortunate to have her among us. We thank Roz for so clearly illustrating that people’s lives are enriched and the world is a better place when art flourishes.
LIVING ART AWARD
Roz Chast Less than a year after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, 23-year-old Roz Chast was added to The New Yorker Magazine’s roster of artists. She quickly became a beloved and witty chronicler of our anxieties, superstitions, fears, and surreal imaginings. Her most recent book, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? addresses the realities of getting old in America. Lauded as The New York Times 2014 Best Book of the Year, Kirkus Prize winner, and National Book Award finalist, it was also the first graphic memoir to win the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. She has published several collections of her cartoons and written and/or illustrated many children’s books. Upcoming debuts in October 2016: No Fair! No Fair! And Other Jolly Poems of Childhood, written by Calvin Trillin, illustrated by Chast; and The African Svelte: Ingenious Misspellings that Make Surprise Sense, a collaboration with Daniel Menaker. Chast lectures widely and has received numerous prestigious awards, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Cartoon Society Reuben Award and the Heinz Award, with praise for bringing “wry humor and wit to some of our most profound everyday anxieties, brilliantly translating the mundane into rich, comical observations.” Chast grew up in Brooklyn and lives in Connecticut with her family and two parrots. rozchast.com

LEGACY AWARD
Liana Moonie “In expressing my impressions in abstract form, I am consciously freeing form and color from Nature to focus on the essential order of things as I see and feel them.” Born in Italy, Liana Moonie was raised in a creative environment and introduced to watercolor by her father, a painter. She later moved to the U.S., where she studied with artists Robert Brackman, Edgar Whitney, and William Maxwell. Her work has evolved from representational to semi and fully abstract styles. Liana’s unique voice finds expression in many media: watercolor, oil, pastel, collage, encaustic, woodcut, etching, monoprint and monotype. Moonie’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions locally and internationally, and appear in public and private collections. Her awards and prizes include the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the National League of American Pen Women Owl Award. She has generously served as Director of numerous art organizations in Connecticut and New York, and established the NAWA permanent collection at Rutgers University. Liana is a lifetime member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists, where she and her late husband Clyde were the founding donors to the Silvermine Art Center Endowment. Future solo shows include the New Canaan Library H. Pelham Curtis Gallery on August 25, 2016. lianamoonie.com
Congratulations, Constance Kiermaier, Lifetime Member of the Guild of Artists! On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Guild of Artists, faculty and staff, we are honored to present you with the first Guild of Artists Award! Another feather in your cap! With much gratitude and appreciation, we thank you for your forty-seven years of dedication, commitment and service to Silvermine Arts Center. As a Guild Artist you have been an inspirational, relevant artist who has had a strong presence in our galleries, exhibiting in many solo and group shows. You have been a devoted, encouraging friend to the Guild over the years. And a wise, supportive educator and mentor, you have helped develop the careers of over thirty emerging artists, many of whom went on to become Guild of Artist members. We are truly grateful for your continued and sustaining membership, and our hats are off to you for great success in your new artistic endeavors in Maine.
GUILD OF ARTISTS AWARD
Constance Kiermaier “l still continue to think of art as magic. In my lifelong exploration of this magic, as a painter and maker of boxes, collages and constructions, I find that I delight and surprise myself in the process of seeking to delight and surprise. This discovery is the ultimate enchantment.” Constance Kiermaier earned a BFA from the Yale School of Fine Arts. She worked as a commercial artist, raised four children, and is a prizewinning collagist, box maker, printmaker, painter and teacher. Kiermaier’s work has been shown at multiple solo and group exhibitions in New York, Maine, Rhode Island School of Design, the Mills Gallery in Boston, and at Yale University. Her many prizes include the Faber Birren Award, and grants from the New England Foundation/National Endowment for the Arts and Weir Farm Foundation. A lifelong Silvermine Guild Artist, Kiermaier taught “Concepts in Painting” for the past 25 years. She has generously shared her love of art, acting as a mentor and guiding spirit for countless students, many of whom went on to become professional artists and guild members. Constance is making a new home in Rockland, Me. Her most recent solo exhibition, “Evidence of Nature”, closed May 8, 2016 at the H. Pelham Curtis Gallery at the New Canaan Library. constancekiermaier.com
Leslee Asch Silvermine’s Executive Director from April 2010 to April 2016 always welcomed visitors at the door for Silvermine openings, performances, and community events. During her six years at Silvermine, Asch created a legacy of programs that unified visual and performing arts, acquiring grant awards from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), and other organizations. Leslee helped create the Sculpture Walk; expanded curriculum at the School of Art to include bronze casting, glass working, and worked with the Jeniam Foundation, the Daphne Seybolt Culpeper Foundation and the New Canaan Community Foundation and private donors to make the Bill Sessions Woodworking Center a reality last October. From a grateful Silvermine community, from staff, faculty, students and trustees, we thank you and send you our heartfelt wishes for a happy retirement. To Leslee, On behalf of the current and past Board of Directors, the Guild of Artists, faculty and staff, we extend our sincere gratitude to you for six years of dedicated service to Silvermine Arts Center. Your passion, commitment, and efforts as Executive Director of Silvermine Arts Center established the necessary groundwork for our growth and development as we approach our 100th anniversary in 2022. With deep appreciation and wishes for a fulfilling retirement, Rose-Marie Fox,

SILVERMINE ARTS CENTER Since it’s founding in 1922 by the highly respected and nationally known Silvermine Guild of Artists, Silvermine Arts Center’s mission has been to foster art appreciation, education and the cultural growth of the community. In the over ninety-four years, Silvermine has grown from its modest two barn beginning to a fertile campus consisting of five galleries; an art and fine crafts gift shop; a School of Art; further enhanced by an array of enrichment programs, including Art Partners for under-resourced students in the area.
With its unique and diverse offerings, Silvermine has been able to bring together a Guild of professional artists, Silvermine Art School students, and a roster of internationally acclaimed artists like Josef Albers, Milton Avery, Clement Greenberg, Christo & Jean Claude, Chuck Close, Alice Neel and James Rosenquist. As it nears it’s centennial, Silvermine continues to be recognized for the excellence of its School of Art and its Galleries. It is a thriving non-profit organization where art, culture, and community find a common ground.
