It’s out there, waiting for you. The voyage of a lifetime. The last continent. Each time you hear the word Antarctica you feel its pull. You can almost smell the crisp cold air, hear the crunch of millennial snow under your feet, see the edge of a humpback whale’s tail as it disappears into the crystal water.

Venture deep into the Last Continent

The sun rises over Antarctic Sound as crimson skies give way to dazzling blue. Colonies of Adélie penguins shake themselves awake. The polar ice creaks and Weddell seals play on freshly fallen snow.

Inland, jagged grey mountains climb skyward over fjords teeming with wildlife and species found nowhere else. To these locals, it’s just another morning in their Far South world. But to our fortunate guests, it’s a rare opportunity to experience the mesmerising awe of daybreak in this realm of icy wonders. Welcome to Antarctica, the last, and least explored, continent on Earth.

To the world’s most curious adventurers, a Silversea expedition offers you a matchless, highly immersive polar experience that showcases the majesty, marvel and mythical beauty of Antarctica.

Travelling in extraordinary comfort onboard our all-suite expedition vessels, your discovery will be guided by an industryleading team of expedition experts. State-of-the-art equipment and procedures provide for thrilling Zodiac® landings, kayaking adventures and hiking excursions, all augmented by daily briefings and engaging lectures.

Words fail to convey the transformative emotions felt when travelling to the edge of our planet, for this land must be experienced first-hand to grasp the connection that will be uniquely your own.

Silver Endeavour, Antarctic Peninsula 2024; by Steve McCurry for Silversea

BIRD SPECIES

Home to penguins – Adélie, Chinstrap, Gentoo, King and Macaroni (South Georgia voyages only), Magellanic and Rockhopper, and myriad pelagic aviators – Wandering albatross, Snow petrel, Antarctic skua, Blue-eyed shag, Giant petrel, Cape petrel, Snowy sheathbill, Antarctic tern and more.

0°/15° SUMMER TEMPERATURES

Celsius ( 32/ 59° Fahrenheit )

The Antarctic is colder than the Arctic because Antarctica is a landmass and receives less heat from the ocean. Its ice sheet is bigger and it has a higher elevation.

235

MARINE FAUNA SPECIES

Six pinniped species inhabit Antarctica. The largest, the Elephant seal and the Antarctic Fur seal, live north of the sea ice. The other four species can live on the sea ice – Crabeater seals, Weddell seals, Leopard seals and Ross seals. There are 10 cetacean species; six Baleen whales, and four toothed whales and Orcas.

950

FLORA SPECIES

Bryophytes like mosses and liverworts, as well as lichen, algae and fungi varieties, grow in Antarctica. Most growth lasts just a few weeks during the height of summer. There are 200 species of lichens and 50 species of moss in Antarctica, while algae are in abundance with 700 species of mostly phytoplankton.

1773

FIRST SERIOUS ATTEMPT AT EXPLORATION

In 1773, James Cook and his crew crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time. They discovered South Georgia in 1775, but although Cook surmised a frozen continent further south they did not catch sight of Antarctica itself.

ICE SHEETS

98% OF ANTARCTICA'S SURFACE

About 98% thick continental ice sheet and 2% barren rock. The ice surface dramatically grows in size from about 3 million km 2 (1.2 million mi2) at the end of summer to about 19 million km 2 (7.3 million mi2) by winter.

ICE THICKNESS

2.16 km

(1.3 mi2)

The average thickness of the Antarctic ice sheet is 2.16 km; the maximum known thickness of the ice sheet is 4776 m (3 mi) at Terre Adélie. Without the ice, Antarctica may be the lowest lying continent; the greatest known depression of bedrock is the Byrd Subglacial Basin, at 2538 m (1.5 mi) below sea level.

1,000

POPULATION

There are numerous research stations set up across the continent that house ~4,400 people in summer and ~1,000 in winter.

South Pole

Antarctica: A world of wonder awaits

Immersive insights and rare discoveries

A vast and pristine wilderness, Antarctica is the world’s coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent; so dry that it is classified as a polar desert. Were there no ice here (the Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest single piece of ice on the planet), Antarctica would look like an archipelago of mountainous islands together with a single landmass similar in size to Australia. But covered by ice it is – some 30 million cubic km (7.2 cubic mi); and cloaked in its frozen wonder is a symphony of glaciers and fjords that are home to fascinating birdlife and wildlife able to thrive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

This continent has a profound effect on global climate and ocean systems, and is essential to the workings of our planet.

And while there are several international research stations here, no one country lays claim to Antarctica. The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 – originally signed by 12 countries and now boasting the signatures of 57 –protects this extraordinary environment as a place for science and peace.

Having only two seasons, Antarctica’s winter plunges the landscape into darkness for six months of the year. Its summer thaw opens a tempting window for the most intrepid travellers to explore its unique beauty, something Silversea Expeditions has been doing since 2008. As a full and operating member of IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) for years, we are committed to the protection of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean environments.

As a full operation member of IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) Silversea is committed to the protection of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean environments.

Unparalleled polar expertise

Expeditions for real adventurers

Having pioneered ultra-luxury expedition cruising way back in 2008, Silversea became the first line to combine expedition cruising with uncompromising comfort. Today, we are uniquely qualified to deliver you the most transformative and unforgettable experiences. Our state-of-the-art expedition fleet is intimate enough to host your exploration in small groups led by the most

experienced professionals. Whether hiking ashore or embarking on a Zodiac or kayaking adventure, your Silversea expedition will bring you close to Antarctica's incredible beauty, wildlife and wilderness.

Please note: Due to the nature of expedition cruising, a basic level of health, fitness and mobility is required to fully participate in most activities.

Photography experts help you capture the experience

ZODIAC CRUISING

There is no better way to get up-close to polar action than by Zodiac – from witnessing the calving of a majestic glacier to seeing a giant Humpback breach vertically from the water to introduce itself. Captained by experienced operators, nearly every excursion in Antarctica is hosted onboard these sturdy vessels, allowing for adventures both planned and impromptu as wildlife dictates and conditions allow.

KAYAKING ADVENTURES

The magic of Antarctica on its own is breathtaking, but when explored on a guided sea kayaking excursion the personal connection you experience with nature is profound. See towering icebergs from a uniquely intimate perspective. Experience the thrill of a curious Leopard seal swimming alongside your craft. Nothing can prepare you for the sensation of gliding past a glacier in complete silence to the rhythm of your heartbeat.

LANDINGS AND GROUP HIKES

Stepping onto the White Continent is a thrill few ever experience so, when you do, you’ll want to be aware of every detail. Our small-group landings are led by expert field guides adept at adding insight to the sights and sounds you’ll encounter. Whether it’s following in the footsteps of famous explorers en route to their huts, or greeting a colony of Gentoo penguins, you’ll gain a deep and lasting understanding of this land.

EXPERT INSIGHT

Our Expedition Team members have spent decades exploring Antarctica and are eager to share their years of knowledge and experience with you. Through conversational lectures and daily Recap & Briefing discussions, you’ll be well prepared both before and after your excursions ashore. Their level of detailed information about the ice, land and wildlife adds a fascinating dimension to your personal explorations and discoveries.

Expeditions with more expertise

Personalised, destination-specific guidance at every step

Each Silversea expedition comprises a uniquely skilled team of naturalists and eco-science specialists whose talent in their respective fields is exceeded only by their passion for sharing their knowledge with you. With up to 28 qualified specialists on each expedition – among the highest personnel-to-guest ratios in expedition cruising – they represent some of the

industry’s most seasoned experts, from biologists, ornithologists and geologists to professionals in history, ecology and photography. Each is closely attuned to the cues of wildlife, ensuring your discovery of Antarctica is intimately personal and extraordinarily revealing.

Note: The roster of expedition team members changes with each itinerary; please contact us for detailed information about your specific voyage.

A closer look at the Antarctic Peninsula

Extending from the northern-most reaches of the Antarctic mainland, this 800-milelong mountain range of ice and islands flanked by the Weddell Sea and Bransfield Strait is the Antarctica of your dreams. You’ll cross the notorious Drake Passage to get here, with its turbulent seas due to the Antarctic Convergence of polar water flowing north meeting equatorial water flowing south – pushing nutrients to the surface that attract a multitude of seabirds and whales.

As the pack ice gets thicker, it becomes dramatically apparent you’re moving closer into Antarctica’s vast white wilderness. Remote and otherworldly, this region is irresistible for its spectacular iceberg sculptures and calving glaciers, and for the possibility of up-close encounters with marine mammals.

Watch for seals sunbathing on slow-moving ice floes and for Humpback, Minke and Orca whales to surface from below the frigid waters. Each day we will attempt Zodiac departures, and, if conditions permit, we will cruise amidst colourful icebergs or step ashore to visit a variety of penguin rookeries and perhaps scientific research stations on complimentary excursions led by our team of natural history experts.

In the true spirit of expedition cruising, each day your Expedition Leader and Captain will determine the best course depending on weather, ice conditions and wildlife we may encounter. Some of the places you might visit include the South Shetland Islands; the 2,200-foot high Brown Bluff on Tabarin Peninsula; Cuverville Island in the Errera Channel; Paradise Bay; and Petermann and Pleneau Islands in the Wilhelm Archipelago. Like nowhere else on Earth

Antarctic Peninsula, Falklands & South Georgia

Beyond Antarctica As if the wonder of Antarctica wasn’t enough, you can add the unusual beauty of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia to your once-in-a-lifetime voyage here at the end of the Earth. Discover these unique regions onboard our world-class expedition ships. Depending on your chosen itinerary, you’ll spend 18 extraordinary days exploring these remarkable islands and the waters, land and ice of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Sound and even the remote Elephant Island.

Rugged, remote, remarkable On this voyage, you’ll sometimes literally follow in the footsteps of the great explorers: Amundsen, Byrd, Charcot, Cook, Fiennes, de Gerlache, Hillary, Shackleton, Stromness and Weddell. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, mighty glaciers and spectacular icebergs, you’ll see what they saw; feel what they felt.

Watch for Peale’s dolphins and the distinctive black-and-white markings of the Commerson’s dolphin as you approach West Point Island. Upon arrival, photo opportunities are everywhere as you walk across rolling moorland and admire colonies of Black-browed albatrosses that nest side-by-side with feisty Rockhopper penguins. You’ll learn about the island’s unique vegetation including the rare Felton plant. And the hospitable island owners are always happy to answer your questions and share their stories.

New Island is a wildlife and nature reserve; an environmental conservation group protects its many birds and animals. Once ashore, you’ll hike into the rocky cliffs to a rookery where Rockhopper penguins and Blue-eyed shags share the same nesting area. You’ll observe Black-browed albatross going about their daily routines and may even spot upland geese. Our onboard historian will tell us about “Barnard's barn” – a stone structure once belonging to an early settler, as well as the wreck of the Protector III – an old minesweeper used for seal hunting, now grounded off-shore.

In addition to three days in South Georgia, you'll also spend four days exploring the remote bluffs, bays and islands of the Antarctic Peninsula, home to rare sights, historic locations and thrilling wildlife encounters – then finally sail out via the legendary Drake Passage.

Antarctic Peninsula & South Georgia

Into the Serengeti of the Southern Ocean

Never mind the bragging rights, if you want to tick off some of the world’s most coveted destinations in sublime comfort and style, then this is the voyage for you. Departing from Puerto Williams, you’ll first enjoy three blissful days at sea as you sail towards South Georgia savouring all the

delights on board, then you’ll cross the famous Drake Passage before gliding past the glaciers of Elephant Island towards the Antarctic Peninsula for two days of adventure and discovery – returning via the South Shetland Islands.

In the footsteps of great explorers This breathtaking destination of towering snow-covered mountains, mighty glaciers and low-lying grasslands attracts an astounding concentration of wildlife: Southern Fur seals, Southern Elephant seals and a variety of albatross species including Black-browed, Light-mantled Sooty, Grey-headed and the spectacular Wandering Albatross, plus thousands of King and Macaroni penguins.

South Georgia is also linked to the early Antarctic explorers. Captain James Cook first stepped ashore in 1775, but perhaps more famous is Ernest Shackleton’s arrival in 1916 following the sinking of his ship, the Endurance. On this trip, you can visit Shackleton’s final resting place and the whaling museum at Grytviken.

Some of the places we may visit include: Cooper Bay: An unforgettable view of huge icebergs can be seen surrounding Cooper Bay as we approach.

Gold Harbour: A large King penguin colony can be found here and seals can be seen resting on ice floes or sunning on the beaches.

Grytviken: An historic whaling station, all that remains are the rusted hulls of long abandoned whalers. Now a museum where you can learn about past whaling techniques and view various exhibits on exploration and discovery.

Salisbury Plain: A favourite breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of King penguins, it is amazing to see how they completely cover the beaches and hills.

The fast way to the last continent

Reaching this region quickly allows more time to explore it. Remote and otherworldly, you’ll feel its irresistible draw as you sight spectacular icebergs and calving glaciers, and perhaps encounters marine mammals.

Zodiac departures will be attempted daily and, if conditions permit, you’ll cruise amidst icebergs or step ashore to visit penguin rookeries and maybe a scientific research station.

Our flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of favourable conditions. We’ll determine the best course which could include:

Paulet Island: Covered in Adélie penguins, there’s also a massive colony of Blue-eyed shags. Kelp gulls and Snowy sheathbills breed here, and Wilson's storm petrels are regularly seen. Learn about Otto Nordenskjold’s party who wintered here in 1912. Remnants of their hut remain.

Petermann Island: Named after a German geographer who discovered it in 1873, intriguing geological features include basaltic dikes and rocks showing glacial polish and grooving. You’ll observe rookeries of Adélie and Gentoo penguins, and Blue-eyed shags.

Pleneau Island: First explored during Charcot’s 1903-05 expedition, it was named after the photographer. Among the common breeding birds are Gentoo penguins, Kelp gulls and South Polar skuas. You’ll also see Southern Elephant seals often hauled-out in wallows. Whalers Bay (Deception Island): Home to a collapsed volcano, we’ll aim to sail inside through a narrow entrance called Neptune’s Bellows to explore the unique features of the area while introducing you to its whaling history.

Goudier Island: A British-built listening station during WWII, then used as a research station in the 1950s. Snowy sheathbills and Gentoo penguins roam outside, and you may sight a whale on your Zodiac cruise.

Venetian Society Programme Benefits

The Venetian Society is Silversea’s rewards and recognition programme designed to offer our members exclusive access, booking benefits and onboard privileges. It is a club that travels, but it is no ordinary club. It is a community of fellow global travellers who share a desire to explore the world in luxurious fashion as they collect lifelong experiences along the way.

Membership starts after your first voyage. Members accumulate Venetian Society Days on each voyage (1 VS Day per day sailed), and the more you travel the more benefits you can look forward to.

Venetian Society members also enjoy tier recognition on our sister brands Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES AND MILESTONE REWARDS

Venetian Society benefits are our way of thanking you for your loyalty. Members are also invited to our annual Venetian Society Reunion Voyage featuring special events and activities exclusively designed for our members only.
