THE FALKLAND ISLANDS & SOUTH GEORGIA

Wildly remote and endlessly intriguing

The Neck, Saunders Island; an Important Bird Area in the Falklands

Known as the Penguin Capital of the World, the rugged and windswept Falkland archipelago is regarded for its scenic beauty and extraordinary birdlife. Cast your eyes in any direction to spot albatross, petrels, skuas, the Falkland steamer duck, and more. Amidst the cliff-lined coasts, Magellanic, gentoo, rockhopper, king, and macaroni penguins make their home. Farther east lies South Georgia, a one-time whaling outpost home to glacier-clad coastlines and astonishing wildlife. Here is where thousands of king penguins flock to a single beach, and where the largest congregation of Antarctic fur seals is found. Look for southern elephant seals and albatross and take hikes to follow in the footsteps of Shackleton.

SOUTH GEORGIA, UK OVERSEAS TERRITORY

Revered for its magnificent wildlife and ruggedly beautiful landscape, South Georgia is known as the “Serengeti of the Southern Ocean.” Together with the South Sandwich Islands, it is part of a chain of subAntarctic isles. The colony of king penguins found here is the largest crèche in the world with over 100,000 breeding pairs. This remote island – where famed explorer Shackleton is laid to rest – is also home to the world’s largest macaroni penguin colony (so named as their striking orange crest resembles a fashionable 18th-century wig!).
