ST. KILDA, SCOTLAND

With its dramatic cliffs and sea stacks, the gloriously remote and uninhabited St. Kilda archipelago is home to Europe’s most important seabird colony. A treasured UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ‘crown jewel’ of the National Trust for Scotland provides exceptional opportunities for observing unique wildlife and minke whales in its swirling waters.

KINSALE, IRELAND

Marking the start of the Wild Atlantic Way on Ireland’s south coast, the scenic wonders of Kinsale’s legendary harbour include the historic Downmacpatrick (Old Head) Castle, Lusitania Museum and Kinsale Lighthouse. Take the Scilly Walk to Charles Fort, visit the charming village of Timoleague or savour a tasting at the family-run Clonakilty Distillery.

DJÚPIVOGUR, ICELAND

Situated beneath the stunning Búlandstindur Mountain, this charming town is an artistic hub of makers and creatives – its most intriguing project being the 34 egg sculptures that dot the coastline. Natural wonders await too, from the cliff-hugging puffins of Papey Island to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, and the floating icebergs of stunning Fjallsárlón Lagoon.

DRANGEY ISLAND, ICELAND A Maiden Expedition

The remnant of a 700,000-year-old volcano (legend says that it was formed when two trolls were petrified by the morning sun’s rays), this birding cliff in the Skagafjörður fjord is a nesting colony for puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and more. Beyond its stark beauty, history notes it as refuge for Iceland’s most notorious outlaw, Grettir the Strong.

Joining Dragney Island in the Skagafjörður bay, tiny Málmey is known for its breaching whales, lazy seals, steep birding cliffs and grassy pasture for sheep. A solitary orange lighthouse stands at its southern tip, watching over the island’s rich mystery and lore: beware the housewife who dares live here for she is doomed to a fate of madness!

Nestled within the scenic Westfjords, few people ever reach this secluded area to see its snow-capped peaks and burbling waterfall that tumbles into the sea. The pristine landscape plays host to incredible marine life, from humpback whales and playful seals who visit in summer to the myriad seabirds that swoop and dance above the water’s surface.
