What is architecture for me?

Me and my background

In it’s many interpretations, architecture is not a static entity but it adapts to different scales of intervention and subjects involved. The architect is the coordinator of this scenography. My architecture vision is grounded on the responsibility for project society towards the future in a conscious way, without the fear of what will come. My vision of that can be summed up in the following Oscar Wilde quote:

Since my childhood I’ve always defined myself by the need to fill my curiosities. I am a detail-oriented person always looking for precise and neat drawing. The interest in construction was passed down to me by my father who is a bricklayer. Over the years I took with enthusiasm every design challenge trying to meld the technical to the creative discipline, innovation to tradition. I participate to new debates with interest, but I like to defend my ideas especially if I verified my theories. The will to change, revolutionise and the way of seeing things from different perspectives have always characterized me. My social sense has brought me to join the NGO Amnesty International.

Nowadays, architects are mostly called for knowledge coordination and synthesis production, therefore to synthesize the complexity. With their socio-technical and technical-professional skills they should be the directors of the development. 20 20

EXPOSILO, reuse and extension of a former cement storage in Reykjavìk

EXPOSILO The plot is located in the new Bryggjuhverfi Vestur district that is part of the transformation of Reykjavík´s brownfield area of Elliðaárvogur. The Björgun company has produced construction aggregates since the silos were build in 1967. The 34 meter tall concrete cylinders kept inside them the cement arrived by ships. The detailed plan allows to increment the existing 1156m2 with other 2040m2, by the addition of new volumes. The intervention has taken into account the difficulty of coexistence with such an arrogant building.

Project...

The new layout is devided in two main future functions: the existing volumes converted in an exposition path and the new ones intended for a new indoor agriculture research centre called Urban FarmLab. The layout breaks the regularity of the surrounding urban scheme and emphasizes in this way the peculiarity and the social role of the project within the neighborhood.

Thesis “EXPOSILO”

The new and the existing volumes are linked and that allows the movement of products from the storage to the new research and testing part located on the first floor. The ascent is guaranteed by stairwell placed in correspondence of the slat buildings’ overlapping area. Thanks to the truss girder construction technology, the linear development has an open plan conformation. This characteristic gives a high level of flexibility for a future scenario reconversion.

regeneration of the former military fridge of Cuneo

REGENERATION OF THE FORMER MILITARY FRIDGE OF CUNEO

(in collaboration with Walter Nicolino Architects) Cuneo is a city of walls. Walls that over time have protected with mastery religious orders and witnessed numerous military maneuvers in different barracks. They are the ones to define the former Military Fridge along it’s perimeter. The proposal’s intent is to preserve and enhance them through a delicate structural adjustment and the insertion of a metal frame. The new structure will host the following functions: underground parking, auditorium, conference room, exhibition gallery and a lounge bar.

GENESIS

ROMANESQUE PERIOD

GOTHIC PERIOD

At each half pilaster corresponds the insertion of a metallic frame with dual structural function: support for the existing walls and for the new slabs. The cavity formed between existing walls and the new metal skeleton becomes an atmospheric vehicle for light and air from outside.

FEEL ROUGE, new urban complex for short term housing in the Molinette’s developing area

FEEL ROUGE The initiative aims to repurpose the actual hospital complex “Le Molinette” , in a new social and aggregative vector. The project is based on the contemporary reinterpretation of the twentieth-century layout which is characterized by pavilions intersected by a corridor. In presence of the intersection points between corridor and wings news public spaces are generated.

OASIS, new urban scenario for a peculiar area located in southern Turin

OASIS The studied area presents a strong residential connotation, mostly characterized by individual medium-sized buildings, in turn parcelled out in other residential units. Every owner has the chance to realize their own private reality by physically isolating themselves from external relations.

READING OF THE STATUS QUO Through the surveys it has been drawn up an abacus of the different present genealogies and their relation with neighbours around.

GENESIS

EROSION

The project consists of the addition of new equipment obtained through new interpretation of the existing isolation system. If their role was originally of separation between private and public, in the proposed scenario they turn into sharing tools. These new elements are designed to be used for recreation, interaction, break, pastime and plantation. This helps to make those unused spaces into integral part of the social interaction system correlated with the city connections. The treatment of the horizontal surfaces creates meteoropathic places able to change themselves in relation to the weather. This allows people to feel the presence of a mutable environment with psychological advantages.

U-HOUSE COMPLEX, new horizontal neighbourhood composed of terraced house

U HOUSE COMPLEX The newly designed masterplan has provided the redesign of the north area of the Pellerina Park, near the banks of the river Dora Riparia, North of Turin. The building typology of the terraced house has made it possible to create a horizontal neighbourhood. The concept which moved lines consisted in “machine à habiter” with no facing on the rear side. The unilateral exposure doesen’t affect the need of privacy through an individual strip of garden for every housing unit.

Distribution of isolux arranged on upstairs floor: bedroom, studio and aisle. Daylight factor: 5%.

During the winter period, with the low sun the mobile solar shading system results open to catch as much light as possible. The sunlight is conducted in depth by way of the main glazed façade which in the situation of low sun can penetrate in depth.
