Why are there so many ESL teaching jobs in Costa Rica? The Costa Rican government invests heavily on making it known that its people speak English. They do this to help convince international companies that Costa Rica is an excellent choice to relocate to. Costa Rica relies heavily on the work provided by large multinational companies such as Western Union, Oracle, IBM, HP, Walmart and Amazon. In all, over 120 multinational companies have set up shop in Costa Rica. This means Costa Rica needs to deliver in its promise of having a work force that excels in English. How Can I Legally Work in Costa Rica? When you enter Costa Rica, you will be issued a 90-day tourist visa. This will serve as your permission to be in the country legally for those three months. You will need to show proof that you will be leaving Costa Rica within the 90 days. Before your tourist visa expires, you need to leave the country. By law, you are required to be outside of the country for a minimum of 72 hours (a "border run") before being reissued another 90-day visa. This, however, has nothing to do with working in Costa Rica. If you happen to get hired by a private school (not a language institute), you will probably receive assistance in getting a work visa. There are a handful of language institutes that will help you with the work visa process also, but they probably will not pay for it. The majority of language institutes will not offer work visas but will still expect you to be working legally. Teachers, among other professionals, are allowed to “sell their professional services” without getting a work visa. You will register with the Tributación office to receive a
tax identification number (servicios profesionales). The Tributación is a government office that oversees income taxes in Costa Rica. Each city in Costa Rica has its own branch. You do not need to wait until you have a job to register with the Tributación. To register for your servicios profesionales ID number, you will need to bring your passport, a copy of your passport, your local address and a bill of some sort with the address stated. Your address must be in the city in which you are registering. You do not need to make an appointment, although you may have to wait in a line. Your number will be issued immediately. Remember that you need to stay up to date with your tourist visa in addition to being registered with the servicios profesionales in order to be living and working legally in Costa Rica. Any language institute or school that hires you expects you to meet these requirements and should be willing to help you and answer any questions you might have. Border runs article

How much Money Can I Make Teaching ESL in Costa Rica? As we're sure you know by now, ESL teachers generally break even in Latin America. You cannot expect to save money while teaching here like you could if you were in Asia or the Middle East. Costa Rica is no exception. The average cost of living in Costa Rica is 700-900USD while the average teaching salary is the about the same. We've recently polled our grads about their teaching experiences in Costa Rica. Let us share a little about their experiences. Most of our graduates who stayed to work in Costa Rica have worked for language institutes, which typically pay $8-10 an hour. These institutes normally have classes in the early mornings, in the late afternoons or evenings and on Saturdays due to the working schedules of the students. Nearly half of these grads were given ten teaching hours or fewer a week when hired. After gaining more experience, most of them were given a full schedule, which is 20-25 teaching hours.

Hours at a language institute can be supplemented with private tutoring hours. These students typically pay between 5-15 USD an hour depending on the student's economical standing and type of class they are looking for. Some students simply want a conversation partner to practice with which is minimal work for the teacher, while others want a teacher to prepare grammar lessons and use materials. This can be a great way to fill up your schedule, but unfortunately attendance is not usually consistent. Therefore, it's not a dependable form of income. If the student cancels, you don't get paid. The private schools here that follow the US or British curriculum often have families that look for native English speakers to tutor their children as well. These parents are likely to pay more per hour than most teaching gigs, sometimes up to 20USD an hour. Call these schools and ask about getting on a tutor list! Another way to fill some hours is by teaching or tutoring online. This is fairly new in the ESL world but is growing quickly. Classes are typically held over Skype, and your students could be anywhere in the world!

There are language institutes, like Open English, that offer courses like this, or you can ďŹ nd students through job board postings. When asked how they would describe their lifestyle based on this information, sixty percent of our grads that participated in the survey said they "live comfortably" or "break even" while the others have had to rely on savings or another income. Again, this data is from our graduates that have taken the time to answer our questions. We would consider this the norm in Costa Rica, although it is possible to make even more money as a teacher here. While deciding if teaching in Costa Rica is for you or not, you must ask yourself what you "need" and what you "want."
What will my job entail and what will my responsibilities be? Remember your foreign language teacher in high school? Your job as an English teacher will be very similar as you will be expected to instruct your students in all aspects of the English language from reading, writing, listening and speaking to grammar and pronunciation. A large part of your job, particularly in the area of conversational English will be to open the eyes and ears2013 of your students to the English language as it is actually used by native speakers, as opposed to the more theoretical version of English they have probably been learning in school. For many, they need to learn English so that they can converse with business partners, clients and customers, and this means they need to be exposed to spoken English at its natural speed. You will also be expected in many cases to provide an introduction to the culture of native English speaking countries like the U.S. and the U.K.

What will be expected of me as an English teacher overseas? • Full mastery of the English language, including all aspects of reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation, and ability to teach and explain these details to your students. • Expertise in classroom management. In most private language schools, class sizes range from 2 – 12 students, while in public schools, classes can range from 10 to 40 students. • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of major teaching methodologies and approaches used throughout the field of TEFL/TESOL – many schools will inquire about your knowledge of these subjects when you interview and you will be expected to implement their curriculum using their preferred methodology. • The ability to accurately monitor and assess the proficiency and progress of your students.

There are many components to this course: class time, textbook reading, online quizzes, papers and projects, and most importantly teaching with real ESL students. You will be in class multiple hours a day with one of our two trainers. They will teach and review grammar, discuss and show teaching techniques and guide you through activities that are actually used in ESL classrooms. Sometimes you will be in "teacher mode" and other times they will ask you to participate from a student standpoint to get a good grasp on the activities.
While you teach, you will be observed by one of the trainers and a peer or two. After the lesson, as a small group, you will discuss the lesson and get constructive feedback to help you reect and grow as a teacher. After the day of class and teaching is through, you will have more work to do at home. You will be asked to read the textbook to coordinate with what is being discussed in class. The textbook has so many great resources that you will want to make note of and save so you can implement it all once you are in your own ESL classroom. You will also take online quizzes over the material in the textbook2013 and topics discussed in class. Therefore, we don't recommend skipping the reading assignments!
During the month, you will teach six different lessons to real ESL students. During week one of the course, you will observe real ESL classes to see what it is like and what the students are capable of doing. Then you will get a calendar of the dates and times and level of student you will be teaching, as well as a topic. Life on the Heredia TEFL Campus Most lodging options are within walking distance from the school, so you will be able to enjoy a beautiful morning stroll through a quiet and traditional area of Costa Rica each morning you come to class. Fresh, delicious Costa Rican coffee awaits you each morning as you arrive. The garden area out back is the perfect place to wake up prior to your TEFL class commencing. It’s also a great area to prepare your lessons or do your homework when class is finished. You can expect most classes to start around 9:00am and finish at 4:00pm from Monday to Friday.
In terms of nightlife, you will only be a five-minute cab ride or a 15-minute bus ride from where all of the action is. Getting around is very simple, and we will show you around when you first arrive. Studying at our Heredia campus is like being part of a family.
