Integrated Design Report MSA PRAXIS

Introduction Throughout my studies I had learnt various ways to come out with a design that would best provide the need of the people, whether they are the users, the clients and also passerby. Most of the time it was done by researching various environmental, history and political condition of the site. However, it feels like a design that come out from the data and it doesn’t really guarantee the effect that the building have to it’s surrounding people and environment. Accordint to Indy Johar “ Rather than just aesthetics, we really have to get down and answer some of these real social

and political issues that are on the ground. Frankly, in terms of propositional design of our cities – and I di erentiate between analysis and proposition – there are not many propositional actors out there” ((Johar, 2009, p. 2)) MSA Praxis taught me that the community and the people around the area would be able to change the programme and the design of the building that was build based on the data alone. By engaging the community, i was able to ascertain that the building would be able to fulfill it’s basic duty which is to improve the live of those people and the environment surrounding the building.

Investigation

I. References to History,Theory and Precedent Learning The Masterplan

Recreating The Past

Reusing The Past

Learning the past failure and the reason behind it. Looking for a possibility to continue the design plan. Anallysing the pros and cons of the past strategy

By analysing the history of the area there are possibilities to recreate the original purpose of the area. However since most of the old facilities had moved to a newer facilities, there were no need to made another similar building within a close distance between each other.

Due to the poor development plan that Stretford had in the past there are still a lot of beautiful buildings left standing in the area. By analysing the past istory record, there are several buildings and I would like to coordinate with the history of the building’s architectural design plan as much as possible

ii. Contextual Analysis

Newton Street Newton Street site is a parking lot just beside a huge 6 lanes road and Bridgewater Canal. According to the new Stretford Masterplan it will be developed as a residential area. The site pposition is very strategic. The canal was like an oasis of the area and it provide a very beautiful vew with greeneries across from it as well. The opposite side has the main shopping area of Stretford. It was located close to a lot of landmarks, bus stops and railway station. However the site does not come with it’s disadvantages as well. The 6 lanes road that’s bordering the site is very dangerous and very busy. The noise from the road is very obvious and greeneries was there to block as much noise as possible. 6 Lanes busy road Greeneries - Block the noise from the road

III. Programme Analysis

After I had decided on my programme, I search for a building with similar programme to find out all the neccessary rooms need for my Soccer Academy. PRECEDENTS UNO Soccer Academy By: JGMA It was designed with a master plan that embrace soccer as a link between community, family, education, health, and nutrition. Programmatic Spaces:

From the data earned from the Trafford Council website I found out that a lot of youth in Stretford do not lead a healthy lifestyle. Combined with our community engagement event enable us to talk with the people of Stretford, where we found out where the problems in Stretford lay on and what is missing in the current Strettford. From the interviews we gathered we found out that a lot of people love to have more soccer facilities and since its aimed towards youth I believe that SOCCER ACADEMY would be a good choice.

Classrooms, gymnasium, multipurpose room, training room, roof garden and soccer fields SPACE REQUIREMENT

IV. Study Tour For my study trip this year i went to Amsterdam and spent a few days in Utrecht and Rotterdam as well. I was interested in how good the transportation in Amesterdam is. Even though the road was busy with bicycles, cars and trams there are almost no traffic jam happen.

MOMENT

HUMANITIES ESSAY I come from Indonesia and the traffic there was horrible on any time and any day of the year and even though Manchester is slightly better but during the peak hour it is still quite bad, that is why I focus my research on the road design and policy as well as the main transportation mean in Amsterdam which is bicycle and the facilities such as bicycle racks and indoor bicycle parking areas.

V. First Moves - Design Generators

Canal View

Wind Direction

noise Source

Sun Path

Public Access

Courtyard

Public access to the roof

I tried rearringing all the spaces I need in the site. The spaces included are cafetaria, classrooms, futsal fields, storage room and infirmary. It was not detailed yet and on later date I add on and exlude some rooms

Allow wind to pass through

Window placed accordingly to maximize canal view and sun light

Located according to the sun path

Open to the main road to attract people

Adjust the shape to maximize available space

Extra structure put underneath the cantilevered building

Statement of Tectonic Intention The Soccer Academy is designed to provide spaces focusing only o soccer training and a cafe attached for public use. My design idea is heavily influenced by the UNO Soccer Academy masterplan idea by JGMA Architect. The Design concept of our two project is similar in a way that it would be to help revitalize the area of Stretford by trying to connect the community with health and education. The division of space come out soon after the idea of having soccer fields into my design come out. HOME VS AWAY. this is the main idea behind the division of the spaces inside the building. Beacause of the existence of various soccer fileds in various areas of the building I design the bleachers with flexibilty in mind. The facade material that I chose is the black bricks beacuse I want to try to haronize it to the surrounding brick houses. The main supporting material that I chose is steel following the smae method of concealing it behind the bricks as Amstelveen College by DMV architecten.

Development I. Structure SECONDARY STRUCTURE Doouble glazing window To ensure the insulation of the building Dark Brickwork format 210 x 100 x50mm The brick was chosen beacuse of the surrounding brick house. Its is the main material of the facade of the building while all the steel structure are placed hidden behind it PRIMARY STRUCTURE Steel Beam Placed roughly in a squarish grid manner and to ensure it’s capabilito withstand the weight of the concrete floor and roof Steel Columns It’s also placed in a grid like manner similar to the steel beams Concrete Floor It was placed on top of the steel beam

Steel columns with 50 cm diameter It was placed outside to support the cantilevered part of the building

II. Construction

Figure 1 . The ground prepaed several buildings need to be demolished and the site had to be cleaned off before the foundation. Figure 2. Foundation poured in inside the dip of the ground Figure3. After the foundation set and ready steel beam and columns were constructed on the site Figure 4. After the columns and beams are fixed roof and concrete floors are constructed. Following that brick wall willbe installed together with the concrete floor installment. Lastly the glazings and interior fittings will be fixed to the building

III. Environment

Rain water Storage The roof is designed slanted to control the direction of the floe of the rain water. Several water tanks stored on the ground floor. The collected water would be used for toilets and for the maintance of all the soccer fields in the academy. The basin was hidden belowstone slabs to add some aesthetic value to the entire rainwater system.

Passive Air Ventilation The building was build according to the wind direction and trying not to block it as much as possible

Passive Light Circulation The building was built according to the sun path and the courtyard in the middle of the huge building help to spread the light inside the entire building. The use of high ceiling window is also to maximize the sunlight

IV. User Outdoor rooftop soccer field free for public use

Rooftop Seat free for public use either to watch the match below or watching the beautiful scenery

Public locker rooms for visitors Diuble glazing window to ensure the entire building well insulated

Turnable and foldable bleachers that enable people to watch the soccer match inside and outside

Ceiling height window offering beautiful Scenery of the canal and the the greenery across it

Rain water stoarge gallons

Public access to the cafe with great scenery of the canal

Development V. Cost Consideration

Buildability The building had a very clear and repetitive structural modules and it should reduce the installation time and there should not be any complication suring the construction

Materials

Energy Saving

The main materials needed which are the bricks and steel should be quite cheap and could be locally sourced and thus reducing the transportation fee as well.

The building was designed according to the sun path and wind direction to maximize the air ventilation and sunlight as much as possible. Additionaly the rainwater system would help to reduce the cost of the cleaning and maintanence of the academy.

VI. Environment Recycling Material Steel is the most common materail used in a onstruction of a buildingand it is easy to reove it and recycle it

Life cycle the life cycle of the building should be very high because the main materials are bricks and steel and these materials rea sustainable and easily maintaned.

Resistant Bricks are durable, weather resistant, fire resistant. Steel also have a very high fire resistant property as ewll

III. Legislation

Handrails at least 900mm

Fire Escape Route

the width of the corridor is more than 1500 mm in width Staircase with 170mm rise, 250 mm going meet the requirement

Fire extinguisher

Assembly Point

The width of the staircase is more than 1100mm

1500 x 1500 turning space in front of the lift doors are over 800mmwide

Realisation

The one thing that was always brought up by Stretford residents is the lack of social activities that happen in the area and furthermore with the closing of several shops in the shopping area and the closure of several Youth Centre it seems that Stretford is in dire need to fix this long lasting problem. each of the just keep hoping that there will be aday where someone will notice itand try to bring back life to the area again. the lack of socia space especially impacted very hard on the youth in Stretford since they do not have any outlet to relieve their stress from the day. However, jin the long term ust having cafes would not be able to help the area. Fortunately, the community engagement event help us to reach the community and after analyzing the data gathered from countless interviews I believe that most of young and children love to play soccer during their free time, thus the decision of designing the SOCCER ACADEMY. Social Space Soccer would be a great outlet for the young who ae very active and I believe that not only the young but families will also come and use the available soccer fields and the equipments that the Academy had. Parents and families could also wait and dine in the cafe area which is open for public uses Health There are various soccer activities that could be done outside the soccer fields. I designed several training areas for dribbling, balancing, juggling and penalty kicks, therefore the entire building are designed to ot just play on the field but to people could also bring a smaller groups to just practice or playing relaxly Education there will be staff that will be able to guide the youth, tehre is also a lecture room that people could rent to old presentation that the public would be able to attend

Conclusion

From the early process of designning out lecturers had always warn us about the Building Regulations, structure technicality and health and safety issues so we always check the requiremmentneed for the building type, so I believe that I had met the Building Regulations requirement . The atelier approach the design process with avery unique and beacuse of the heavy involvement of the community the project that everyone had become one of a kind project. the design. The atelier help everyone to produce a design that could only bebuild becauese of the people of the area and the environemtn surround it.It teaches me the importance to take that step to interview people and ask about the real problem that sometime couldnot be found from the internet or books.
