To r espond to this situation in the histor ical ci t y o f Us a q u e n , a n e p h e me ral solution to addr ess dynamics that occur o n l y i n a ce rta i n ti me a n d on a cer tain day of the week is pr oposed.

T h e r e a re 69 p rop e rti e s of cultur al inter est in Usaquen’ s histor ical center, m a n y of w h i ch a re n ot re cog nized as such by visitor s and inhabitants of th e s e c to r. Si n ce w e l i v e i n a g l obal society wher e vir tual activities and exchange s c on trol th e s oci a l , e con omic and cultur al r elations in people of all ages a n d s o ci oe con omi c g rou p s , people have not only put aside the physical ele m e n ts of th e s e ctor, bu t th e ver y same histor ical dynamics that occur r ed in th e p a s t, s u ch a s th e ma rk e t in the centr al squar e, wher e the villager s per f o r m e d th e e x ch a n g e of p roducts, whether f ood or handicr af ts, to gener at e n e w s oci a l a n d cu l tu ra l d y n a mics.

Th e p rop os e d G u g g enheim Helsinki will be an innovative, multidis ci pl i n a r y mu s e u m of a rt a n d design. It should be of the highest ar chitectur a l qu a l i t y, g e n e ra ti n g a me a n i n gf ul pr esence in Helsinki and of f er ing civic spa ce w he r e both re s i d e n ts a n d visitor s can gather. A pr ominent site has been r e s e r v e d for th e bu i l d i n g a t the symbolic gateway to the city f r om the sea a n d cl o s e to th e h i s tori c ce n ter. T he wider Etel채satama ar ea f or ms a signif ic a n t r e ge n e ra ti on z on e .

S t a ge O n e w a s a n op e n ca l l for p a rt icipation by qualif ied ar chitects—either indivi du a l s o r te a m s —from a n y w h e re i n the wor ld. Competitor s wer e asked to pr epa r e a d e s i gn s ubmi s s i on , w h i ch wa s evaluated on f ive key cr iter ia: cityscape, ar chi t e ct u r e , u s a b i l i ty, s u s ta i n a bi l i ty, a n d f easibility.

Th i s trail connects the edge of the Tomine r eser voi r a n d i n te g ra te s i t w i th th e e conomy, cultur e and envir onment, in ter ms of p u b l i c s p a ce , of Gu a ta v i ta . This envir onmental path implements new tech n o l o gie s , wa te r h a rv e s ti n g roof s in the new constr uctions, wind ener gy an d h a r ve s ti n g of a q u a ti c p l a n ts (Buchon) f or power gener ation and powe r b i k e s , a n i n te g ra te d u rb a n tr anspor t system, which tr ansf or ms e n e r gy i n to e l e ctri ca l e n e rg y to power the envir onmental paths.

T he major dif f iculties encounter ed w e r e i n a p p rop ri a te l i v i n g conditions and lack of suf f icient space f or neigh bo r ho o d i n te ra cti on , th e re for e the pr oject pr oposes pr oductive homes con s i s t i n g o f u rba n g a rd e n s , w a ter har vesting and spaces which enable local e co n o m i c i n come s u ch a s commer ce sites in f ir st f loor s. Livability of citize n s i s a l s o i mp rov e d , th u s i n creasing comf or t in buildings. T he use of r ecycl e d m a t e ri a l s for th e con s tru ction of housing diminishes the costs by using s pe ci fi c g ra n u l e s , b u i l d i n g retaining walls f r om plastic bottles, etc. Finally, t he u s e of col or i n i mp ov e ri shed neighbor hoods is an impor tant f eatur e be ca u s e i t i s th e ma n i fe s ta ti on of the distr ict’ s pr ocess of appr opr iation by c o m m u n i ti e s ; th e re fore th e color palette is dr awn f r om this pr ocess to bl e n d i n s u btl y.

T he appr oach t o t he pr o j e ct be g i n s w i th a p a th th at descends to a squar e located 3 meter s belo w z e r o l e v e l . T h i s d e cl i n e s h e l te rs th e visitor s f r om the str ong winds that blow f r om e a s t t o w e s t i n t h e d e s e rt a n d from e xtr eme temper atur e changes dur ing the day and n i ght . T he s q ua re i s l oca te d i n on e of these micr o climates, sur r ounded by ar tifi ci a l ga r de n s w h i ch moi s te n th e a tmos pher e making it mor e habitable. T her e is a l a r ge e l e m e n t o n th e s q u a re th a t p oi n ts at the sky in or der to extend the view to the s t a r s .

It aims at pr oviding a s a fe p l a c e i n th e d e s e rt for a s tron omical tour ists who want to engage in the space a n d, c o n s e q u e n tl y, tru l y e n j oy wh a t the A tacama Deser t has to of f er.

A s p a ce l a bora tory descr ibes the f ir st appr oach to a moder ate po r t i o n o f a te rri tory to ca rry ou t an ephemer al element in a scale of 1:1. It is a cco m pl i s h e d i n a n a re a of the univer sity. A f ter empir ically exper iencing t he pl a ce a n d u n d e rs ta n d i n g i t s dynamics, it can be concluded that it is chara ct e r i z e d by i ts p rop e rti e s for abode. Despite being a pr e- designed s pa ce fo r h i g h -d e n s i ty fl ow s p ace, what is obser ved is a calm place of little u s e , w i t h a v e ry h i g h p ote n ti a l f or becoming a nice place gather ing ar ea.

Fi n a l l y, i t h a s s ma l l chair s made with the same mater ials; hence thi s m o du l e be come s a n i n ti ma te and quiet place in the immense and populous J a v e r i a n a Un i v e rs i ty.
