Providing End-to-End Surveillance & Security Solutions for a Smarter... Safer World Swedish company Axis Communications AB has come a long way since it was first estalished in 1984, originally as an IT company selling print servers. Key to the Company’s success is undoubtedly its continual commitment to research and development, which was highlighted in 1995 when Axis successfully launched a network optical storage solution and became the world’s leading supplier in this category. Axis named this technology “Thinserver technology” which is known around the world today as the Internet of Things (IoT). Here Axis established a trend 20 years before it became common knowledge.

Axis provides a complete range of solutions for a broad spectrum of industry segments and applications. Whether you need a few cameras, or a few thousand. Easy to install and easy to adapt to changing needs, Axis security and surveillance solutions are contributing to a safer and more secure, as well as intelligent environment, in a wide spectrum of disciplines including Retail, Transportation, Banking, Critical Infrastructure and City Surveillance, Government, Education, Healthcare, Industrial and Commercial areas, as well as Sports and Leisure venues and Data Centres.

One year later in 1996 Axis invented the world’s first network camera and, by drawing on the skill and expertise of a dedicated team, has since been innovators in video surveillance security solutions, thereby increasing the security of millions of people worldwise and helping to meet the growing need for a smarter... safer world. Today acknowledged as the true expert within the Internet of Security Things, Axis is driving network video development, providing a variety of network video products and creating various Internet of Security Things products to broaden the use of IP networks. During the emergence of the Internet, Axis was a pioneer in network connectivity; focusing on TCP/ IP printing and later multi-protocol print servers – an Axis industry first – the Company grew at a rapid pace. Axis released its first ETRAX® chip, embedded devices with internet access, established offices in Asia and became number two in the industry. Axis focus was to make networks smarter, enabling more and more hardware to be connected simply and economically to IP networks and decided to only work with open standards and avoid proprietary protocols.

In a recent interview Axis regional marketing manager Dominic Jones told us: “With the help of 80,000 partners, spanning 179 countries, Axis delivers a series of grounbreaking products and many industry firsts and looks foward to pioneering many more.” The security market has rapidly expanded since we entered the digital age, with the market research institute, IHS Research, estimating it will grow by 16% yearly until 2019. This growth has brought new technological breakthroughs – and new possibilities for end users.

Dominic added: “Some of the most significant innovations are network cameras, intelligent applications, thermal network cameras, Axis’ Lightfinder technology and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). There have also been huge advances in image quality, such as the implementation of HDTV. Our customers can optimize their business, gain business intelligence and reduce carbon footprint by taking part of the material remotely. Network cameras also create new opportunities to work with new applications. Axis has pioneered this market, showing how IP solutions stretch far beyond security applications. Retailers, for example, are utilizing the technology to manage their inventory and optimize store layout, while cities are using it to manage the flow of traffic, reduce vandalism – and much more. Axis is also pushing the limits of image quality, by exploring how it can be optimized for the surveillance task at hand – no matter how bad the light or ambient conditions. Another step in Axis long-term growth strategy is our recent expansion into the physical access control market.” Axis offers a wide portfolio of IP-based products and solutions for security and video surveillance. Covering a variety of application needs, from robust outdoor cameras for harsh climates, to discreet products for sensitive environments, Axis security cameras, video encoders, accessories and access control products are based on open industry standards. The products integrate easily with Axis’ video management software, or with a partner product, to build a complete security or surveillance solution.

Axis offers end-to-end surveillance and security products for small systems, mid-sized and enterprise solutions with thousands of cameras working with video management systems and storage solutions. Axis also offers physical access control solutions as a perfect complement to any surveillance solution. With Axis’ products for physical access control , there’s finally an open and future-flexible IP-alternative. Axis' physical access control products cover a variety of application needs, from identification and entry control to advanced access management and integration with other systems. Constantly striving for a smarter and safer world and continuously launching innovate products throughout the year, Axis will be showcasing new additions to the Company’s comprehensive portfolio at the IFSEC International event taking place on 21st/23rd June at Excel, London. So why not come along to Stand E1000, where the Company’s friendly team will be happy to discuss your individual needs for security and surveillance solutions; ensuring you gain the maximum benefit from your investment.

The Senior Management team of the Security Industry E Magazine recently announced, Visor Systems as the deserving recipients of the Vehicle Inspection Technology Specialist of the Year Award for 2015. The Award recognises the advancements that the Lancashire-based company has made in the sector as well as the various applications that the Visor Systems product range can provide a valuable aid in the ever-changing field of global security.

Vehicle Inspection Technology Specialist of the Year Award for 2015

The VISOR Under Vehicle Inspection System (UVIS) was originally developed to meet the need for a fully portable electronic UVIS. Since then, the company has developed versionss for trucks, buses, cars vans and trains: there are versions for temporary and permanent sites. There are many reasons why it is important to inspect the undersides of vehicles. Those reasons are directly related to the need to ensure the security of:

• • • • •

Critical infrastructure, Major events, International border crossings, Government facilities, Major corporations etc

On receiving the Vehicle Inspection Technology Specialist of the Year Award, Visor Systems Managing Director, Bill Halkett commented: “We are delighted to have received the Security Industry E Magazine award as recognition for the contribution made by every one of Visor Systems’ staff, from the shop floor, to the design team and engineers.” “Our success as a company over the past twelve months is a team effort. Our team designs and builds the innovative solutions which provide the security arena with products that it can rely on for a flawless solution time and time again.”

In an environment where terrorists and smugglers are very creative in their selection of hiding places for people, weapons, explosives, drugs and other threats; perimeter security systems which do not include UVIS as a part of the process are incomplete. Many checkpoints and security gates mistakenly still use the traditional mirror or camera on a pole. These devices miss the important central region – ‘the hidden area’ - of the underside which intelligence sources advise is used to import threats – people, weapons, drugs etc – into secure or protected facilities.

By deploying VISOR, security operators have a high quality, flexible security tool which enhances the performance of all vehicle checkpoint operations. The VISOR UVIS solution is cost effective, does not compromise on performance and includes features such as:

• Single, complete searchable colour image • Multiple angled cameras ensure excellent images • High quality images • 16x zoom • Image comparison • Archive and retrieval functions • Intuitive user interface • Easy to deploy and use • Fast operation • Robust, all weather construction VISOR UVIS models are available for all types of wheeled vehicles:

• VISOR-P or VISOR-S for trucks, buses, cars, vans etc • VISOR-C for cars and light vans • VISOR R for trains and rail vehicles

All VISOR UVIS models have been designed to be easy to deploy and use.

For example, the portable VISOR-P shown is as simple as it looks. There are only three items – the Camera Unit, the Control Unit in its moulded plastic case and the interconnecting cable; simply put the Camera unit in the roadway, connect it to the Control Unit, apply power and it’s operational. About one second after a vehicle has passed over the Camera Unit, the VISOR operator is presented with a fully searchable high quality colour image of the complete undercarriage.

VISOR’s high quality digital colour cameras ensure that the composite undercarriage image is clear and detailed. Because we use several cameras, and the cameras are angled, operators can ‘see around’ objects to find threat items. Difficult to see objects become visible by using the image interrogation tools integrated into VISOR. VISOR’s proprietary software stitches the images from each camera into a single composite of the underside – about one second - keeping all of the image detail. The intuitive user interface allows operators to

• Review each underside image in detail. • Zoom into any part of the image – without loss of image quality. • Compare two images of the same vehicle. • Check vehicle license plate. • Archive and retrieve records. • Incorporate denied list vehicles into the database. These zoom images show the level of detail and some of the items which have been found using VISOR systems. The angled cameras ensure that objects such as the handgun and canister, which were both hidden to vertical view, can be seen.

Cash for Innovation R&D tax credits are a government incentive scheme, which encourage companies to carry out self-funded development projects. These companies are then able to claim a proportion of the costs that they have incurred in developing new products, services and processes. Breakthrough Funding are champions of this incentive and have branded R&D tax credits as 'Cash for innovators' – a more fitting title which has been warmly received by the companies that they help. With a Head Office in Kent, near the International Rail Terminal at Ashford; the Breakthrough Funding initiative helps all SME’s involved in innovative work within the UK, but normally they have to be a limited company. The organisation aim to make the whole process as quick and painless as possible as Breakthrough Funding's team of advisors know just how time consuming it is to run a business so they do everything they can to help them get money back as quickly as possible. “We specialise in helping security and hi-tech companies get government cash for the development work they undertake. The scheme is called Research and Development Tax Credits but we prefer to call it 'Cash for innovators',” explained Breakthrough Funding's Operations Manager, Christie Ellis. “Our role within the security sector is to ensure that all businesses entitled to claim this money get what they’re entitled to (at the last count HMRC estimated that 95% of eligible companies hadn’t claimed),” Christie continued. “With all the innovation going on at present in the sector, we think it’s important that it’s supported and nurtured with this extra cash. Getting 25% back of what you’ve spent on development can make a huge difference.” Following a quick initial qualifying conversation, Breakthrough Funding's advisors can tell if the company is likely to qualify or not. Candidates have to be solving a problem in the sector and coming up with new developments that their competitors would steal if they could!

“If this is the case, then organisations should get in touch with Breakthrough Funding. The average cash back is £46,000 so it’s definitely worth it,” Christie added. Discussing how 'Cash for innovation' has successfully helped current UK SMEs, Christie went on to say: “We have never had a claim turned down and we’ve completed hundreds, so I guess that’s a pretty good start.” Cash for innovation is revolutionising the security sector. “We’ve recently completed an R&D claim for one of our clients who had developed an amazing security system designed to safeguard against employees who are rogue trading,” Christie explained.

Another has included a client who has designed a new and innovative tracking system for emergency services at large outdoor festivals where wi-fi and 3G/4G is virtually non-existent.” “Only this month we have secured a cash return of nearly £500k for a smallish company. You can imagine how that has transformed their business. But it’s important to mention that we are keen to help all types of security companies and the scale of the cash back is dependent on staff salaries, subcontractor bills and material costs.” “If you are doing anything new and different in the sector, and you’ve spent time and money getting it to market, you should be talking to us. You have nothing to lose and only government cash to gain,”

RING SIGHTS DEFENCE GROUP LTD

Evolving with industry With roots dating back to 1976, Ring Sights has achieved an impressive reputation over the years for the design and manufacture of the finest quality optical equipment. Forty years on and, thanks to highly professional leadership, dedicated teams of expert staff and a massive amount of investment, the company now offers state-of-the-art production facilities. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn the company is acknowledged as a world leader in research, design and manufacture of unit power sights and zeroing devices for military and law enforcement uses. As long as there have been military rifles, there have been sights, designed to assist the users eyes which cannot focus precisely at great distances. In its simplest form, the original iron post gun sights were implemented to allow the eye to sight down the gun barrel and line it up with the target. However, this requires the eye to focus on a near and far object at the same time. Modern optical gun sights or telescopic 'scopes' are designed to compensate for limitations of the human eye. Over the years, ground breaking technologies within the industry have emerged to make targeting more accurate and marksmen more lethal. As a result, gunsight manufacturers have had to evolve with the complexities of an ever-changing battlefield.

The challenge faced by Ring Sights is the demand to evolve with the needs of war fighters, enabling them to engage the enemy at any time of day or night, and across any kind of terrain or environment. The Company has come along way since the first Air Gun sights it produced, which were designed for BSA. The company's first patented solid glass sight was the P90, which incorporated a solid glass ring sight, hence the company name. Today, Ring Sights design, manufacture and supply a wide range of solid glass sights for calibres ranging from 4mm to 40mm. In Military fields, sights have been developed for the UK LAW 80, the .50 Machine Gun and the 20mm Oerlikon - sights which continue in service today. Produced by SAAB-BOFORS, the NLAW shoulder launched missile system has Ring Sights' RC12NLAW sight fitted. Specifically designed for the launcher system, this sight enables the end user to operate at night and provides all round capability.

The LC30 Grenadier grenade launcher sight was displayed on the Madritsch ML40 launcher at IWA. IWA is one of the largest most renown trade fairs of its kind in Europe and we pleased to see there was some strong interest in the sight.

RC12 NLAW pic here

The standard unit power sight of Ring Sights' designs is a reflex collimator sight that projects an aiming mark optically, which is focussed on the target. Therefore, the position of the eye does not matter, as the firer looks through the sight and puts the aiming mark on the target where he/she wants to hit and pulls the trigger. Firing is ordinarily done from the shoulder, since the eye must be more or less in line with the sight. However, since the company’s sights operate on unit power, they have no magnification, meaning that both eyes can be kept open. It is not always necessary to view the Ring Sight from behind; with the company’s RC range having the capability to be viewed from behind, above, either side or below. NVG compatible, all Ring Sights are small and maintenance-free, they have no moving parts, no seals to leak, no internal misting-up and no purging; as well as offering the flexibility to be adapted to fit various weapon systems. Ring Sights Defence Group provide Ring Sights for a full range of weaponry from cannons and grenade launchers, to pistols, rifles and riot guns, together with designing lasers/illuminators and range finders suitable for certain sights.

Ring Sights customised designs can be useful as a built-in collimator or optical lining-up device when aimed at a suitable target; with the alignment error with a Ring Sight having a standard deviation of only half a minute of arc, Ring Sights can therefore act as alignment datums. The sights can be potted in permanently during the production process aligned with launcher rails, an aerial, an optical datalink, or indeed anything in need of alignment. The Ring Sight acts as a check against misalignment of the device, or its sight, as a troubleshooter and as a diagnostic tool. Ring Sights commitment to research and development is highlighted by its’ innovative program of new products, the latest of which is the Ring Sight LC30 Grenade Sight, a unit powered reflex sight the provides first hit probability to the ballistics full range.

The winners of the Tracker Solutions Award for 2014/15 have just released a new pair of tracking devices onto the market. These devices are sure to be the next game changers in tracking. Boasting unbelievable battery power and signal strength for such small, ultra compact weatherproof devices. The BULLDOG MINI is as tough as it sounds: a small asset tracker which is ideal for shipment, inventory and anti-theft tracking by GPS and Cell-ID. Due to its small size (11 x 7 x 2 cms), it fits into (or/on) all kinds of objects or shipments (e.g. IBCs, ULDs, pallets, boxes etc.). With one set of consumer batteries (changed by user) it transmits approx. 1000 positions. By this it can tracks objects for 2-3 years with one position per day or several months with multiple positions per day. Benefits are: an affordable price, built-in temperature and motion sensors and a water-resistant case (IP68). There is also a rechargeable version that is simply placed on an induction pad; this is a quick charge and ideal for on-the-go.

Hunter Global Tracking also just successfully completed an amazing tracking project from Germany to Cartagena. The project was to test the sensors and the battery power of the RIDGEBACK device sending a location message every 2 hours and temperature + humidity sensor messages in between each location message. The device was non stop for nearly 2 months, measuring a constant temp at -20 to -25 degrees. It also had alerts set up for door opening and for intrusion. This was a very sensitive test as Columbia can offer it’s own challenges to security and the shipper/ cargo holder.

Multimodal trip for a cable-free autonomous Ridgeback Sensor: Monitoring a reefer containing hazardous chemicals requiring inside temperature readings every 2 hours (limit -15°C) Journey: 2 February to 9 March 2015 between Central Germany and Colombia.

Overall multimodal trip

Detailed approach to Cartagena

Geo-fence warning sent to shipper on container entering Cartagena Port zone (local time)

Arrival parameters at chemical depot, showing position inside geo-fenced area, Ridgeback mounted, door closed, temperature at -22.7°C, humidity at 52% and shock reading.

Discharge at container port and truck transfer to chemical depot for Customs clearance and stripping

How the Ridgeback was attached to the inside of the container, per an adjustable brace mounted (with magnet + screw-on) on the left hand side door, with the tiny external antenna on the outside of container door at the top.

SIMPLES!

All of Hunter’s devices are multifunctional, especially the solar (RIDGEBACK) and the BULLDOG which don’t only do just tracking but also monitor a host of parameters. They come in versions with all the required sensors built-in and can even track from within a container or a truck. Attaching to the inside of a door within seconds, so no long installation process, expensive man hours or drilling. “We recently attended the 2014 TRANSEC show at the Olympia. This turned out to be more than successful for us; it was the ideal platform to meet the specialized industry of transport security. The venue attracted quality customers all seeking, for their valuable asset- tracking needs, both innovative solutions in battery life optimization and intelligent interfaces/options. We believe, given the constant interest on our stand, that Hunter Global Tracking can provide the solutions with its range of state-of-the art and versatile products.” Aside from the 2015 Transec event, Hunter Global Tracking will also be exhibiting in Africa and Central Asia where HGT regional agents have already been appointed. HGT will also attend other industry shows as the year unfolds, targeting safety, security, and risk reduction.

“Our devices are so intelligent; they really can be the solution to the most complex situation.” Ben “Many people think their situation is too complex to monitor with small, powerful mobile devices; but HGT trackers can communicate with almost any host. Our aim in 2015 is to produce solutions for many sectors but, at the same time, remain highly versatile. There is so much more you can get from our devices other than just tracking – our objective is to convince these markets of the usefulness of intelligent monitoring. So the company intends to promote its products in many new sectors requiring asset positioning, especially in emerging markets where telecoms are not great and the risk is high.” HGT intends to maintain its costing structure. The purchase of any unit includes the unit itself and any accessory together with a world-wide SIM card including 2MB of data transmission per month and unlimited use of the management platform, for 24 months. So, for the first 2 years there are no additional costs, no monthly bills, no surprise charges for your tracking. After two years the only fee to continue usage will be a yearly telecom fee based on past consumption and this is a very low cost, a bit like paying for a ‘pay as you go’ SIM card. Ben highlighted “This structure is a lot more affordable for customers in the long run and much easier for them to manage.” Ben added that “many people also think such tracking is expensive; but when you calculate the real cost of knowing where your goods or containers or trucks are, the daily tracking cost for peace of mind is ridiculously low in relation to the value of the asset!” We are very reasonably priced and are proud of the quality we provide at the price, “ HGT is global company, providing the same high quality services to any part of the world, especially to areas which are tough to operate in; even areas with no GPS coverage, HGT provides satellite communications with the same range of tracking units. The management platform is multilingual and the SIM cards have premium worldwide roaming. HGT now has agents in Southern Africa and Central Asia where tracking is difficult, telecoms sometimes unreliable but where knowing where your cargo or mobile asset is remains useful to avoid theft, pilferage and shipments ‘disappearing’ en route. Hunter Global Tracking provides high quality traceable products for the transport & logistics industry, the agricultural and construction plant sector, the leisure sector and medical needs for persons. “Our devices are so intelligent; they really can be the solution to the most complex situation,” concluded Ben.
