Sime Darby Idea House Green Ideas

The Sime Darby Idea House is a socially, economically and environmentally responsive prototype dwelling that would provide an insight into future tropical living, showcasing the latest in sustainable architecture in its quest to become the first carbon-neutral residence in Southeast Asia. Conceived as a test bed for new ideas, this house is a collaboration involving the world’s leading

technology and solutions providers – architects, engineers, landscape designers, urbanists, contractors and suppliers. The collaboration brings together some of the best innovations, solutions and technology available from these companies in their respective field to improve energy efficiency in homes and reduce the consumption of limited resources.

We at Sime Darby will systematically adopt the green ideas in this house, in part or in entirety, in all our housing projects, demonstrating our commitment to creating sustainable futures for future generations.

LANDSCAPE

The Idea House is positioned as a pavilion within the landscape, with its curvilinear forms inspired by and blending in with the site’s topographical contours. Both house and landscape are integrated via a landscape scheme divided into garden sections for health, wellbeing, healing, recreation and permaculture.

Rain / Grey Water Management

‘Grey water’ from basins and showers is recycled to flush the WCs. Aerating the showers saves 64 litres per day. The rainwater captured by the sloping roof is collected to irrigate the vegetation within the development. The water harvested is 100% recycled to cater for a family of five.

Orientation, Climatic Responsiveness and Sol ar Energy

The house is orientated to minimise heat gain and lower cooling loads. Its deep overhangs provide shade and weather protection, reducing reliance on mechanical ventilation, cooling systems and its associated costs. The house will have photovoltaic cell technology to harness the sun’s rays as a renewable energy source.

Multi-Disciplinary Coll aboration

The house is the collaborative result by architects, engineers, landscape designers, urbanists, contractors and suppliers with the shared vision to make The Idea House the benchmark in sustainable residential design. This was achieved through pro-active knowledge sharing.

Building Form

The house is inspired by the traditional Malay Kampong house in its socio-environmental responsiveness, providing opportunities for social interaction in the anjung and serambi verandah spaces. Open, permeable flexible interior spaces with higher roof volumes allow for social and spatial flexibility, made comfortable by cross ventilation.

Scal abilit y

The house’s flexibility of modularisation allows us to minimise the cost of materials used in building larger, higher quality homes at a more affordable price. By using a single component template, the Idea House can be replicated and scaled to other typologies.

Natural Ventil ation

The open plan nature of the house, with sliding external and internal walls, capitalises on its ability to be cross ventilated. Orientating the living spaces in a southwesterly direction harnesses the prevailing southwest wind and reduces the need for artificial ventilation. Internal temperature and humidity levels were also lowered.

Topographic

The close interaction between architect, landscape architect, infrastructural and civil engineers led to the ideal positioning of the house within the site. It responds to the contours of the site’s topography, minimising the cutting and filling of the landscape and preserving the site as much as possible for future generations.

Expansion and Contraction

The house is a fully adaptable dwelling for the family. It can create more space as the family expands and adjust when the children leave the nest. Open plan living provides a more flexible lifestyle, promoting adaptation of spaces to suit the family’s living, working and recreational needs.

Modul arisation and Ease of Construction

Modern construction methods using prefabrication and modularisation are excellent benefits to the industry. Faster, easier and more costeffective, they allow for structures to be demounted if necessary, to preserve the terrain for future generations and development. They also provide opportunities to employ individuals with a lower skills base.

Responsiveness

Environmental Analysis

The house provides excellent daylight penetration to the habitable areas, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day and into early evening. Most of the spaces allow for free flow of air with little obstruction. Velocity of air is fairly constant and natural ventilation is effective.

nothing is more beautiful than a line that brings out a form

ABOUT FICUS PEAK

Function often dictates the shape of a finished form; houses included. Ficus Peak however, adopt a more contrarian approach in the design of its semi-detached and superlink homes. Where convention prescribes that a house extend itself from front to back, a Ficus Peak home extends its profile sideways in a unique and ultramodern manner.

Semi-detached

That modernity is clearly evident in the home’s exterior where a suspended roof covers the home – a flat, slightly angled plane that adds to the aesthetics of the facade.

To enhance a sense of community, there are no fences separating the homes. Even so, security is not compromised, as the single entry/exit point together with an anti-climb perimeter fencing safeguards the entire development. In addition, all homes come with built-in security features.

Superlink

Ficus Peak also boasts a number of firsts in Denai Alam – solar-heated water for showers in all its bathrooms*, HSBB-ready homes** (high-speed broadband), a true plug-and-play convenience and, the first semi-detached homes. * Except maid’s room. ** Applicable to Unifi service by TM only.

THE TOWNSHIP Denai Alam was inspired by the age-old concept behind traditional kampongs, one that stresses on communal living in a neighbourhood that abounds with traditional charms. Central to this is a 4.8 km denai, or footpath, that connects the entire Denai Alam, fostering a sense of community. As for accessibility – getting in and out is easy with the GCE literally at Denai Alam’s doorstep. There’s also the NKVE, a mere short drive away.
