SIMLA YUZGEC Selected Works 2014 - 2019
‘My point of view as an architect and a designer is to assimilate the given problem and bring the most simple yet exclusive creation. This quest to create a unique concept for every single project is my major motivation. For the next step of my professional life I want to work in different countries and in various types of design and architectural projects. This ideal is what drives me as I deeply believe that design solutions and the human soul are open to expansion and evolvement. I’m very passionate about not only design and architecture but also cultural diversity and human relations as something like minimal design styles with a touch of context, culture and tradition, in the manner of a mind-blowing fusion meal.’

The separate units are brought together, while the spatial fluidity is maintained through the circulation. All spaces are distributed around the waiting room. In spite of all the transparency, patient privacy is created. The realization of the project aims to reflect a professional atmosphere, comforting the patients through a sterile, light environment.

AG HOUSE RESIDENTIAL // INTERIOR // REALIZED // ANKARA // 2016
role + concept development + client meetings & material selection + technical drawings + estimating cost & construction pragramme + choosing the appropriate contractors + construction administration
This 2-story apartment was renovated for a young couple with two small kids with the program consisting of one master bedroom, two children’s bedrooms, a laundry, a guestroom, two living rooms, a kitchen, a storage room, and a bakery atelier. Contrary to the original plan, the design aims to make the rooms more spacious.
ground floor plan / before
Starting with widening the entrance which confronts the staircase, there was a need for a balustrade or a wall around the stairs. To meet this demand, a transparent wall was designed to keep sunlight in and to keep the visual connection between floors. Dark brown marble was used to make this element the centerpiece of the house. Bedrooms, laundry and the sitting room for guests were planned on the ground floor. Instead of making a cloakroom, a bigger entrance with open closets was created.
ground floor plan / after
The kitchen was moved downstairs to provide a relationship with the main living room and with the garden where the family will spend more time. On the bedroom floor, the old kitchen was turned into a laundry and the former laundry became the children’s bathroom so that the bathroom in the hall was added to the master bedroom. The hobby room in the backyard which opens on all bedrooms was turned into a bakery atelier for the wife who is a bakery chef to allow her to work outside of the apartment.
-1 floor plan / before
On the lower level, the last three steps of the stairs were shifted towards the living room so the storage room could be enlarged and directly connected to the kitchen. Kitchen and living room were organized as one single space with wide sliding glass doors at two points. The sitting unit is designed with a library behind it to meet the needs for a large bookshelf in the house.

The same clients from the 2-story apartment renovation project bought the floor upstairs and wanted this flat to belong entirely to their children aged 2 and 4 since the existing rooms were insufficient. The programme includes two children bedrooms, a home gym which can be turned into a room for a future child, a nanny’s room, a kitchenette, and a playroom.
ground floor plan / before The original plan was completely changed and the existing three little bedrooms turned into two big bedrooms with their own bathroom. Each room was designed with a study and a sleeping area. The nanny’s room was organized as a separate studio so that it can be apart from the apartment so that the family and the assistant have their own privacy when needed. The playroom was the most fun yet the most challenging part of the design since the child protection requirements had to be met consistently throughout. Instead of making a mainstream playground with princess towers, a 120x120cm grid system was adopted in order to allow transformation in the coming years to address the changing needs of children growing up.
ground floor plan / after
Two towers were designed for each child, and connected with a bridge. Both of them can be reached with a small stair and one of them has a slide. The 4-year-old girl wanted a kitchen under her tower but the boy is too young to express an interest. Bars and hooks were installed to the ceiling so that swings and gymnastic rings can be suspended. A magnetic blackboard was put up on one wall to let them paint at will.
Two themes were chosen for the children’s room; wanderer and dreamer. Two different colours and one mutual color were chosen to adapt to the whole concept of the house. Bespoke furniture was designed in order to nourish the imagination of the children while growing up and supported with well-known design objects to create consciousness.
NC HOUSE RESIDENTIAL // INTERIOR // REALIZED // ISTANBUL // 2018
role + concept development + client meetings & material selection + technical drawings + estimating cost & construction pragramme + construction consultancy
The layout of the apartment is designed for a family with two children that has owned this house for two generations. The house is located in a very expensive part of Istanbul on the Anatolian side. The existing apartment was full of furniture, paintings, and objects as a result of two generations of settlement. The new design was to be modern and simple looking but to still have references to the family memories.
The wall dividing the living room and the kitchen in the dining area is straightened in order to create a clear rectangular shape for living and dining. The kitchen and the living area were separated with a big sliding door to make a visual connection and to have a feeling of one large place when desired. In the living room, one big L-shaped sofa was designed and supported with the existing vintage chairs in order to achieve a balance between the modern and the old. The entrance used to be separated by a door, but in the new design a library is placed to meet that function and a reading area is created to allow residents to relax after work. The master bedroom, dressing room and the bathroom used to be reachable through a small hall. All these functions were reorganized in one big room which can be reached through a door from the main hall.

KARS HOTEL HOSPITALITY // ARCHITECTURAL // PROPOSAL // KARS // 2015
role + concept development + creating visual materials + presentation
Kars Hotel was designed to be an extension of the historical old boutique hotel which was renovated by Belgin Koz Architects in 2003. It is a well-known structure in the area since it is located in the historic town of Kars. The city is in the east part of Turkey and was occupied by Russians in the late 19th century for 40 years which shaped its architectural texture.
The main characteristic of this pattern consist of long facade buildings attached along the street with enclosed courtyards. In the new structure, the street silhouette was maintained with two linear wings around a closed courtyard on the 2D schema. The narrow wing lies along the building plot on the main street side and is equally elevated as the neighboring buildings; the wider one is one floor taller and has a pitched roof on the background respectfully. On the ground level, a two-story high opening was designed to invite pedestrians and vehicles into the courtyard.
To connect the existing courtyard to the new one, a semi-closed passageway was created. The ground level consists of a lobby, a ballroom, a restaurant, and services including retail functions of the program. In the middle of the courtyard which will be covered with snow almost all winter; there is a winter garden made with transparent glass which sits on the snow like a rare crystal. The colors of the existing structure are a dark grey local stone on the outside and laced white wooden panels on the inside. This contrast was maintained in the new building as the street view was made with dark grey anthrasite stone and inside is white plaster facade. All the openings in the facade on the street view are references to the existing buildings around. Tüm hakları MİK Mühendislik Müşavirlik San. ve Ltd. Şti.’ye aittir. The main idea of the project was to provide as many green areas as possible by creating volumes that lay horizontally along the slope opposite the existing highrise buildings nearby.
This approach with a park input in the given program was aimed to be a beginning of a green axis which is already in the master plan. The masses for the program were designed as exposed concrete rectangular shapes that reach out from the green axis on the highest level of the site through the park. The philosophy of coexisting with nature is implemented with this cycle of coming out of green and turning into concrete and and rounding it off again with grass simultaneously.

perspectives
The block for the Cem was designed as a square shape in reference to the symbolism of the Alevis and reveals itself on the east-west axis. It is the only block that touches the earth only from the floor in order to show itself as a place of worship which does not need to hide any longer.
The soup kitchen, funeral, and cultural functions spaces, which were designed all in one in Alevi places of worship as an indication of keeping all stages of life together. Thus, the entire land was considered a small example of life. All blocks are created at the same height to strengthen the philosophy of oneness / unity.

BAMIYAN CULTURAL CENTER COMPETITION CULTURAL // MASTERPLAN // ARCHITECTURAL // PUBLISHED // AFGHANISTAN // 2014
role + concept development + creating visual materials + presentation
Bamiyan Cultural Center project was designed as a natural museum, in an area where various religions and cultures cohabited throughout the centuries .The design was conceptualised to show the rich heritage without competing with or intruding on its historical surroundings.
Starting with the idea of creating a center to unify all Afghanistan, this project was envisaged to build a structure and its surrounding landscape, and fit it into its surrounding landscape featuring soil, sand and vegetation from all around the country. Inspired by the walkways of Bamiyan, two main routes were created through the vistas of the terrain. These routes begin from the path coming from the existing local market through the vista axis leading to the Buddha Cliff.
