It is difficult to imagine a community more intimately vast than that of Sims 4. While there exists an extraordinary jungle of content creators, YouTubers, Influencers, modders, and a remarkably dedicated fanbase, the Sims community is also a world where players, colloquially named "Simmers," have forged lasting and meaningful relationships with one another. Many congregate around certain influential hubs of the community, veritable watering holes of social influence, and without these power houses, the Sims community would not be the same. One of the most influential voices in the Sims community is Pixelade, an influencer and YouTuber so essential to the Sims ecosystem that picturing the community without him seems a little like blasphemy. Matt is well-known for his warm, bubbly, and often side-splitting guides, reviews, Let's Plays, and speculation videos. Gentle-faced and unapologetically energetic, Pixelade feels equal parts youthful and wise beyond his years. I spoke with him recently about his experience as an influencer, as a Game Changer, and as a young man coming of age in a world increasingly strange and rapidly changing. His answers were both revealing and heartfelt.

“I haven't seen a single Star Wars movie!” Alaeryn: Pixelade! In just eight years, you have grown to be a mighty staple in the Sims community. How does it feel? Did you ever expect this? Pixelade: Honestly, it feels terrifying. It’s a lot to handle. Since I started creating content in 2012, I knew that I wanted to be an influencer, but I didn't think it would get to this magnitude. Alaeryn: It's clear from your earliest Let's Plays and from the speculation now percolating around SimGuruNinja's latest tweets that Generations, a Sims 3 expansion pack, is one of your favourite packs to date. What are the features of Generations that you would say are essential to add to Sims 4? Pixelade: Ah, yes! In my opinion, the Generations expansion pack is a staple. It almost feels essential for every iteration of the game in the franchise. At this point, we need a baby overhaul, and Generations would be the perfect pack to add that into. Our elders are still ne-

glected after six years, and I feel like if they got a little more love, players would probably be interested in playing with them more than they currently do (Nifty Knitting was a HUGE improvement). I’d like to see canes return, bingo nights, retirement homes, and much more. I’d also really like to see high school graduations and prom nights. I find it absurd how our Sims can attend university but can’t receive a diploma beforehand. most about The Sims is that you can be whatever and whoever you want. Some games make it easier than others, though, depending on gameplay features and what packs you do or don’t have. I used to make myself and my dream man. I’d give him the perfect look and the perfect traits and play out my life how I envisioned it in my imagination. This was my entire childhood and why this franchise has a special place in my heart.

“I haven't seen a single Star Wars movie! I do fully support the idea of a Star Wars pack for other players who are interested in that sort of thing” Alaeryn: Some of your most popular YouTube videos are speculation videos. In one of these videos, you've admitted that you're open to the possibility of a Star Wars-themed game pack. So am I. Like SimGuruNinja, I'm a huge Star Wars fanboy. What do you think may come in a Star Wars pack? Pixelade: That’s an excellent question because I have no clue! I haven't seen a single Star Wars movie! I do fully support the idea of a Star Wars pack for other players who are interested in that sort of thing, though. Enough has come to the game that I enjoy, and now I want other players to get what they want. It’s only fair.

Alaeryn: People of Newberry game developers recently approached you for an interview; you also have shown marked interest in the Paralives project. What are your hopes for these indie games? How do you think they'll affect the development of Sims if at all? Pixelade: In all honesty, I’m glad for these other life simulation games. It seems like corners are being cut with The Sims 4 as far as content and gameplay depth. Having a little bit of competition would be just great, haha.

Alaeryn: As a Game Changer, you serve as a liaison between EA developers and the players they serve. You bring us early content footage and Let's Plays, speculations and honest reviews. But many people have the wrong idea about Game Changers and their roles. What is the craziest thing that people have assumed about your role as a Game Changer? Pixelade: As a Game Changer, I’ve seen it all. But I think what I see the most is people assuming that EA pays me to say I love the game or [to] only speak highly of it. That is certainly the case. EA does not pay me when I reAlaeryn: EA does own certain Star Wars rights, not view early. I’m given a press release so a collaboration between the two franchises copy content of the game, and with that [I] provide a is possible. We've already gotten Baby Yoda thorough and honest review to my viewers. If I and Star Wars costumes in both Sims 4 and don’t like something, I’ll say it, and even then, Sims Mobile. What other EA titles do you think that will upset some. It seems like you can’t Sims 4 would or could consider? win. If you praise the game too much, you are kissing up, and if you criticize it too much you Pixelade: I’d love to see The Sims collaborate are deemed ungrateful and undeserving. At the with IKEA again. I’m the biggest IKEA fan. I’m huge into modern furniture, so it was for sure end of the day, all you can do is be 100% honmy favourite stuff pack from The Sims 2. Now est. You won’t please everyone, and that is okay! Lastly, I’d like to add that Game Changers that the Sims team has promised to update skin tones this fall, I’d like to see them collabo- are not only (sometimes) seen as developers rate with Fenty Beauty to do this. Not only for for the game but [we're also] treated as if we have direct contact with the developers and skin tones but makeup as well. This needs to be done correctly, and I think working with this influence what they do in development. Actually, we have no control over what is released brand will help them achieve that. and when its released.

September 2020 | SimmedUp Alaeryn: To remain constantly in the know, to take in information from different sources, and then to make videos that disseminate information to the public is often an exhausting, thankless, and full-time job. How do you make sure you take care of yourself? What is most difficult about being a Game Changer? An Influencer? What is the most rewarding? Pixelade: I think I struggle with taking care of myself. I suffer from moderate to severe depression and some days are harder than others to get out of bed and plan or film videos. I’ve had it get so bad that I’ll temporarily lose interest in my channel and that’s usually why I’ll have a few days a month where I don’t upload. Getting outside does help bring the motivation back, though, which is great! I think what is most difficult as a Game Changer and influencer are the expectations. I always feel like I need to do everything in my power to please everyone, but you can’t. That’s impossible. Learning that and applying that has also helped my depression and lack of motivation. I’ve been so much happier just doing what I want to do on my own time. It’s a breath of fresh air. What’s most rewarding is seeing the outcome from those that support me. Reading how my content made them smile or inspired them to be creative. That’s why I’m grateful to be able to do this for a living. You can’t put a price tag on that.

Alaeryn: The world is very different now than it was six years ago. How's quarantine treating you? Pixelade: Quarantine is tough, socially. With work, nothing much has changed, but I miss being able to go out and be with friends. I miss hugs and close contact and all, but the priority right now is getting through this and making

“I suffer from moderate to severe depression and some days are harder than others to get out of bed” sure everyone does their part to help stop this virus from spreading. Alaeryn: You started your YouTube career six years ago at the very young age of 17. How has this business changed you if at all? What are your plans for your very bright future? Pixelade: There is so much to this question. I don’t even know where to begin or what to say, but I will say this: YouTube and social media, in general, [have] helped me grow thick skin. I was bullied throughout high school so starting in this business was scary. It was hard for me to take the criticism, and it still is, but I’m in a much better place now than I was 6 years ago. I’m so grateful for that. It’s hard for me to plan out my future. I don’t know where I wanna go with my channel or in my career, but I’ve been branching out to create content on life simulation games other than The Sims. I can gladly say that I’m enjoying it.

Alaeryn: Speaking of change, you were one of the Game Changers who spoke loudly about the need for improved skin tones for Sims 4. You've also been incredibly vocal about the need to vote in order to unseat the current US administration. Your support is both brave and necessary. Have you ever received backlash for your outspoken support of such movements? Pixelade: Oh, yes I have. Like I mentioned in the response to an earlier question, as an influencer, you can’t ever win. There is always going to be someone out there that isn't happy with what you do or say, even if it’s the most right thing you can do. At the end of the day, I intend to make people happy.

SimmedUp | September 2020

Alaeryn: While we're on the subject of inclusion, let's talk about disabilities in the Sims. I'd love to see disabilities represented in Sims 4, and I know you would too! What's your vision for disabilities in Sims 4? How can the developers manage this issue sensitively, with fidelity, but authentically? Pixelade: If disabilities ever come to The Sims 4, they need to be implemented accurately. This is extremely important! I think The Sims team needs to consult with those with mental and/or physical disabilities before making any decisions. As someone who suffers from mental illness, for me, I would not like to see it ingame as The Sims 4 is an escape from that (for me). But I understand that for others, they’d like to see it and feel represented, which I support 100%. This is exactly why I think there should be an on/off toggle for this in the settings menu. I’d also like to add that this content should not be placed behind a paywall either. You shouldn't ever make someone pay to see themselves in a video game if it wasn't introduced when the game was initially released. I’d hope many players would agree that these additions should be included in a free patch update if they were to come. Alaeryn: Is there anything that most people don't know about you that you wish they did know? Or something that they misunderstand that you wish they understood better? Pixelade: Gonna keep this last question short and sweet since I got pretty personal a few questions ago, but I want everyone to know that my intentions within the community are not malicious. I just want everyone to be represented, [to] feel happy, and [to] have fun playing the game we all share a passion for. *This interview was carried out, before the release of the new Sims Star Wars game pack.

Answers Your Questions Meet Grandma Ruth Pennington, SimmedUp Magazine's very own Agony Grandma. Grandma Ruth was born and grew up in Sunset Valley and lived in Bridgeport as a young adult working as a late-night radio DJ where she would take calls from all kinds of Sims to give them advice about life. She managed to save enough money and move to Isla Paradiso to open a small beach bar where, again, she found herself listening to other Sims’ problems. Grandma Ruth then decided to travel the world for a few years visiting places like AlSimhara before settling down in Veronaville working as a therapist. It is rumoured that Grandma Ruth had affairs with members form the Capp and Monty families but she has never confirmed (or denied) these allegations. Now an elder, Grandma Ruth decided it is time for a change. She moved yet again, this time to Brindleton Bay, to share her vast knowledge of life with SimmedUp readers. She enjoys knitting while listening to heavy metal and sipping on a simoleon sunrise; she makes a living by selling her knitted goods on Plopsy. *Note from editor: We love Grandma Ruth but truth be told, the woman can't knit. Nothing ever sells on Plopsy so we as the SimmedUp team secretly buy all her knitted goodies off Plopsy. The problem is, she never stops knitting, and we are up to our eyeballs in yarn. If you'd like to support Grandma Ruth, please donate to www.simmedup.co.uk and keep her knitting until the reaper comes knocking.

The Sims Mobile Build Mode: Make it Modern The Sims Mobile is a slick, bright Sims world dedicated Simmers can carry in their pockets. Modelled after the colourful, clay-like renders of The Sims 4, The Sims Mobile offers players a creative sandbox in which to form families, to jump into jobs, and to build beautiful homes with mobile device convenience. It is a relatively young game, celebrating only its second anniversary in March 2020, but its developers have rapidly added assets to gameplay over that short amount of time. The base game, featuring a collection of careers, hobbies, and relationship stories, received supplementary event features such as Sweet Treats Showdown, Wumples Wish lists, and an Eco Workshop.

To be sure, the Sims community at large has an incredibly robust and talented build faction, but this particular Simming facet has out-paced much of the others in The Sims Mobile.

Players tap their way through these various events, often earning prizes of the clothing and furniture variety, but as time wore on, the popular lifesimulator soon became hyper-focused on its build/ buy mode assets.

Still, while parts of the mobile game await a muchneeded face lift, building in The Sims Mobile has never been better. Players are able to construct homes in a variety of eye-popping styles, outfitting their dream homes the way they see fit. It steers clear of opulent finishings or overly luxurious accoutrements. As a result, the modern home often feels hygienically clean, fresh, and stylish. Simmers can recreate this popular style by strategically choosing and placing the right furniture and decor. Let us turn to a few stunning examples. In her modern builds, Karen Keren, YouTube mobile builder extraordinaire, uses clean lines and a simple

Player build preferences often mirror real-life trends. And there is perhaps no interior design trend more readily recognizable than “modern.” The term can seem nebulous; it often serves as an umbrella for other, related trends such as “midcentury modern” or “minimalist.” But the “modern” movement in interior design usually boils down to a few essential bullet points: Sharp, clean lines Black and white color palette Simple, nearly minimalist decor Metal and glass fixtures

color palette. Karen’s modern living room features a sleek fireplace with little to no adornments. The squat, white chairs are clean, without fussy pillows or curved arms. Even the kitchen table hosts only the essentials. The area feels bare, stylish, and functional. Mandy, another talented builder within the Sims The modern home is unpretentious with a deep community, also created a delightfully modcommitment to what is “essential” and “functional.” Mobile ern build some months ago.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Sweet Treats Showdown and Wumples Wishlists continue to introduce new items to Sims Mobile, some of which qualify as “modern.” The discerning builder needs only to remember a few guiding principles: clean lines, a simple black and white color palette, natural materials like glass and metal, and little to no extraneous decor. Give your Sims only what they essentially require, and you’ll be well on your stylish, modern way.

For many Sims 3 players, careers are a major factor in their Sims’ lives, but after more than ten years of playing the same limited options, players may look to expand their Sims’ resumes and horizons. Custom careers offer a wide range of new gameplay opportunities and challenges, especially when combined with innovative Sims mods such as Zerbu’s Ultimate Careers!

ization, I’m focusing most of my efforts on refining my existing Sims 3 careers. I do mod Sims 4 but only privately at the moment; I may release Sims 4 content at a later date.

I’ve been making custom careers for about eight and a half years now. I was actually preparing for my A Levels at the time, and accounting was one of the subjects I was studying. I would have loved to If you’ve looked for custom careers in the past, have had my sim-self working in the accounting chances are you’re familiar with MissyHissy, who field, but since nobody had really done anything has developed a vast collection of custom careers with creating custom careers at that point, I decided and academic customizations for adults, teens, and to give it a try myself. A friend linked me to Creon's children in The Sims 3. Her website features more original tutorial, and it developed from there. So the than 40 custom careers, apprenticeships, and after- accountant career was the first career I made, and it school activities for kids and teens. I was delighted was released on April 28, 2012. to speak with MissyHissy about her accomplishments and am excited to share our interview with you! Q: So why the singular focus on creating only for Sims 3 right now? What do you enjoy about it? Q: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me for A: the first issue of SimmedUp Magazine! Let’s jump The why's an interesting question. One of the things right in! First off, where are you from, what Sims I've loved about creating careers for Sims 3 is that I games do you play, how long have you been playcode each line by hand, and by doing that, I've starting, and how did you get started creating custom ed to understand how to read some script errors, content? particularly relating to the careers. Q: Well I’m sure I speak for many in the Sims 3 community when I say thank you for your continued efforts to create exciting new content for the game! Speaking of that, tell me about some of the other projects you’ve completed! What project would you say you’re most proud of and why? A: I think the project I'm the most proud of would be the 'Degree' Careers - my Simbridge University Project, which aims to redesign the Sims 3 University system and to shift the focus more to studying and academics than parties! I wanted it to feel like Sims really have to work toward their qualifications.

working on, and then I found a University in the UK that had the course I needed. The university websites often provide detailed information about the Activities such as sports & joincourses, and it's from those sites that I draw inspiration. But that takes time, and sometimes the opportunities don't work out as well as I'd like. So they're definitely the most difficult and time-consuming aspect of the project.

Q: And what do these ‘degree’ careers offer players in terms of gameplay? How do they differ or integrate with the EA University system in Sims 3? A: Q: Oh wow! That sounds ambitious and exciting! What Each 'degree' career will provide the sim enrolled in the course with books to read after every class, prompted that idea, and what were some of the textbooks to study through opportunities, and usachallenges you faced in making it? ble objects to boost their performance. At the end of the 'degree,’ there's an exam to take, and finally, A: graduation to attend. At the end of that, the Sim The idea came about mostly because I've been try- acan (at no cost) a degree to hang on the ing to create custom academic degrees for several wallpurchase and will get a jump-start in the associated cayears with no success. The most challenging part has probably been the opportunities. I split the 'degrees’ into three, four, or seven levels, with each level equaling a year at university. For each 'year,’ I created five opportunities, but I wanted them to feel realistic, so I used the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website to find a degree that fit what I was

SimmedUp | September 2020 A: Feasibly, they probably could! Essentially the career levels simulate levels of degrees in real-world higher education; a bachelor’s degree is the three-year courses (so three levels - see my events management career as an example); a master’s is four years (accountant, nursing), and the Doctorates will be seven years, or levels. There's an exam opportunity at levels three, four, and seven. So you can choose how long the sim studies, how advanced their ‘degree,’ will be, and therefore how much of a boost they’ll get in the associated career! If they get a bachelor's degree, they go into level six of the career, a master’s starts them at level eight, and a PhD puts them straight at the top of the career. So if your sim had a degree in science and medicine from EA's university, they could then enroll in the nursing 'degree' and obtain the master’s, which would then promote them in the nursing career. Q: Well that’s certainly an amazing accomplishment and adds a very realistic component to the game that I’m sure many veteran (*cough* - older) players will recognize and enjoy! What project that you’ve done would you say presented the most significant technical challenges, and why? A: Aside from the 'degree' careers, the other one I'm particularly proud of is the medic career, which is the first, and currently only, career I've made which features three branches instead of two. It's been a lot more complicated to code and actually took me

two years to complete! It was so much more complex because of the actual branching itself; since none of the other EA careers actually have three branches, there was no reference point for me to work with. This diagram explains how the branches work but in basic terms, the first split is easy and just the same as any other career with branches; however, the second split comes a little further along the GP branch. Q: I see! And what is the benefit of having the third split? Does each branch offer distinct opportunities or challenges? A: There are different opportunities for those branches, particularly the psychiatrist branch. Largely, it was designed to feature three major aspects of the medical profession into one career instead of having separate careers. Q: Well, congratulations on “cracking the code,” so to speak! I’m sure that opens up so many possibilities for future ideas and projects! We’ve been talking about adult Sims’ careers this whole time; let’s shift gears and talk about the younger members of our Sims’ families! What have you got for them? A: Well lately I've been working on new activities for children and teens, enabling them to develop different skills, instead of the same old charisma, writing, logic etc. I've already created some after-school music activities, basically simulating music 'lessons' in multiple instruments. I've also created a range of sports activities and other activities to boost skills, such as the artisan skill. In terms of future plans, I'm currently working on some exam tutoring-style activities, so they'd be more like revision classes to attend after school, to help boost vital skills needed for eventual jobs or university. Q: Amazing! I love how those activities for kids and teens can directly integrate with the custom degrees and careers that you’ve created! Very comprehensive and well-thought-out! As you know, a big part of our mission with this magazine is to spotlight amazing creators for The Sims franchises; in that vein, who are some of your favorite creators, and what’s your top bookmark to find amazing CC for the game?

A: I adore Sandy from Around the Sims and her content. She's been a dear friend for around eight or nine years now, and her content is fantastic because it's so versatile. My other favorite modders would have to be Arsil, Icarusallsorts, and Gamefreak180 because they have all, at some point, added something amazing to the game to keep me interested in not only playing the game but also continuing to mod for it. As for my CC sources, I usually look on Tumblr: Pi’s TS3 CC Update is my main go-to: Q: I love all of those creators as well! Sandy’s content for Sims 3 and Sims 4 really is top-notch, and I can always find something new and amazing on her site. Which game franchises do you create for?

Sims 3

How long have you been creating About a year and a half or two. for The Sims? What type of content do you typically create?

How did you get started creating content for The Sims?

Couldn't find the exact items I needed and got annoyed, lol.

What do you enjoy about creating? What do you find to be the most challenging about it?

Most enjoyable: the meshing process is pretty cool to me if I'm making something from scratch, otherwise seeing the finished object in game, working and looking good. Most challenging/frustrating: doing everything right and then it not working - and having no idea what went wrong. Also UV mapping - hate it with the burning fire of a thousand suns.

What other creators do you admire or who inspire you?

So, so many, some of them have been gone for a long time (Luna, Gelina, Awesims, Pocci), and others are still very much active. I can't possibly list them all so I'll just mention a few that come to mind Marcussims91, Mspoodle for the amazing functional stuff and being an absolute authority on cc making, PotatoBalladSims for doing things in the sims no one would've thought possible, Nilxis for the amazing worlds, Deniisu-sims for braving all those conversions, ArchitecturalSims and HouseOf84Sims for making me drool every time I'm on their pages & so on.

Introducing "Hello! My name is Ribbity, and I've played The Sims since the early 2000's. I didn't join the Sims Twitter community until July this year but was instantly welcomed with open arms. There are so many friendly and supportive people, and I have already made some incredible friendships. The support I've received in this small time has been life-changing, and I feel so much more confident in myself because of it! It’s because of this newfound family that I started my YouTube channel, something I’ve wanted to do for years! Not a day goes by that I'm not grateful to have a place in this community, and I can't wait to see what fantastic things everyone achieves!"

In a community where many Simmers are familiar with the latest instalment of The Sims franchise, we often forget or simply have no knowledge about the prior games which made the current ones possible. In the ‘Retro Corner’ Melissa takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane, rediscovering, playing, and writing about her favourite predecessors of The Sims franchise on Console and PC. year-old Melissa, could recognise that Bustin’ Out was a massive improvement. In fact, this little madam couldn’t understand why Maxis didn’t just remove the console, The Sims from existence entirely. Of course there are the similarities in gaming modes, aka ‘Bust Out’, whereby players follow a story, or ‘FreePlay’ offering players a more laid back, sandbox style of game play similarly to the PC games you’ll find today. Bizarrely I'm starting off this Retro Series with a personal favourite of mine; The Sims Bustin’ Out, and being the biased sim that I am, I firmly believe that this game deserves a magazine section of its own (but I can’t, so we'll just have to plod along with a couple of articles to suit). Yes, I must divide this article into two, simply because there is so much to cover, and so much to say about a truly underestimated game that is often swept under the carpet.

Also, thank god they fixed the lighting and added sunrise and sunsets. We can actually see our sims without having to turn the brightness up on our tv screens.

Side note: the soundtrack is the epitome of early/mid 2000s music. It's a banging soundtrack with CAS/Buy/Build mode tracks that seamlessly bounce off each other. It suits the funky theme entirely. SIM GURU NINJAS MOUSTACHE! Creation by Rhys With The Sims YouTube Show Spark’d hitting our screens, everyone drew bated breath as teams were eliminated one by one - Congratulations Team Llama. Through this all, there was one constant, Sim Guru Ninja. Dave Miotke has been thrust into the Sims Limelight as the ‘Sims Guru Heart throb’ with his infamous moustache. (which sadly he recently shaved off! Sorry fans) and one Simmer decided NO it will not go, Rhys created Dave Miotkes moustache build and is now forever immortalised in the Origin Library and SimmedUp Magazine.

Hi! My name is Rhys, I'm 26 and from Wales in the UK. I first started playing The Sim 1 on PS2 , then moved onto PC and I haven't looked back! In The Sims I mostly spend my time building but now I've started my own YouTube channel and streaming daily, I've started to play a lot more gameplay. I still play a lot of The Sims 2 as I just can't part with it after all these years! This house was inspired by SimGuruNinja's moustache. The house is kitted out with a sci-fi theme for a geeky Sim living their sci-fi movie fantasy. Maybe I should've waited for the Star Wars Game Pack before building this...

SimmedUp | September 2020 mod for it, I would have laughed and shaken my head. Upon getting the game, I remembered mods and CC from my Sims 2 days and immediately started looking for mods to play with. I played for a month or two and then something happened, like a click in my mind. I told myself, “You’ve wanted to learn some simple code for ages – why don’t you try to make your own Sims mod?” Awfully daring a thought, isn’t it? But awfully exciting too, or so it was for me. I love a challenge, and I’ve loved Sims since the very first game. Ever wonder what would happen if your sims could worship you or maybe you wanted to create your own cult? Lumpinou’s Rambunctious Religions mod now gives you these options. With four unique religions, this mod is a lot of fun. It has a quirky tongue-in-cheek feel to it that reminds me a lot of The Sims 2. So, without further delay, let’s get your sims religious. Hello, Lumpinou here! Thank you for asking me to answer your questions, I am quite honoured! I am a European woman living in the United States, and I create mods for Sims 4. I chose the name ‘Lumpinou’ in remembrance of a pet bird I had as a teen; it was his nickname. He was there at a difficult time of my life, and I will never forget him, evem though he was ‘only’ a tiny budgie (Well, hopefully I haven’t weirded you out already, ha-ha!) Starting modding was a strange process for me because of how it came about. I have no background in computer sciences or I.T, and I have never worked with code before. Let me tell you the story. Getting Started Sometime this year, I bought Sims 4 on discount for something like $5. What a bargain! You see, I’ve always loved games, but because of newly-acquired physical limitations, I can’t play most games anymore. Sims 4 though, that’s one of the most hand-friendly games out there, since it’s pretty much just a matter of clicking around. This game scratched my gaming itch. At that moment if you’d told me I was going to

That’s all it took; all of a sudden, I was reading up on how to get started modding the Sims 4. There is not a ton of documentation out there, but there are a few powerful tools that anyone can use. Zerbu’s Mod Constructor 4 is one of these. That is how I started and how a fair amount of modders do also. Many popular mods were at least partially built with it (Spinning Plumbobs, Expanded Mermaids, KawaiiStacey’s Life Decider among other mods of hers, etc.). In a sense, it is a tool to begin modding with but not a beginner’s tool. I still use it now for some parts of my mods. It’s a timesaver. Then you also need S4S (Sims 4 Studio) and extracted game files to look through and imitate; that's the next step. Still, anyone who wants to start modding and has no clue how will quickly be able to make traits and such in MC4 (Mod Constructor 4). I never had any interest in making personality traits, though.

September 2020 | SimmedUp No offense to anybody who does; I just find them too limited in scope and a little boring to make. I guess I’m a big picture type of person; I want to bring new gameplay for all Sims. I don't particularly try to cater to the individual, which trait-makers thankfully do. My inclination towards the general more than towards the individual is how Rambunctious Religions came to be, really. What is more group-related than religion, after all? A Modding Journey My second mod, Contextual Social Interactions, benefited from what I’d learned from making the first mod. I had more confidence that I would be able to create a new gameplay aspect, albeit a small one. Deciding what religions to use took me a while. I knew not to use real-life religions, and I knew I wanted my mod to be as base-game compatible as possible. But you can’t avoid real-life inspiration. I wanted it to be absolutely quirky and poke fun at everything and everyone without being disrespectful, a difficult balance, but I tried my best. From there on, I tried to draw from experience and fill in with imagination. The “Cult of the Cowplant” was partially inspired by a friend of mine and the parts of the New-Age community that I am familiar with. The ridiculous and hilarious Cowplants also inspired me. The “Congregation of NonBelievers” comes from a lot of staunch atheists or nihilists I’ve known over the years. The “Treaders of the Occult” are more a work of imagination really, something to fit with the Sim’s own occults. “Worship of the Watcher” is a mish-mash of monotheistic religions. But there’s a secret, and that is that I myself fit in all of those in some way. This was important to me because, this way, I could relate to all of it and make fun of it at the same time. There is a part of my own beliefs in each of those, so it’s myself I’m poking fun at, and that helps me do this in a non-offensive way. Religion is such a tricky topic. What’s Next? So, what’s next for Rambunctious Religions? Honestly, at this moment I

have no idea. My inspiration has taken me elsewhere lately. I am hoping to eventually get a collab started with a builder to see if some really cool church buildings could be made for each religion. But on my side of things – I don’t know yet. RR is a very personal work as I let my quirky side express itself for all to see. The initiation scenes are quite a bit of writing, and this was the first time ever that I shared my writing with anyone really. For how personal that work is, I have a special fondness for it. I do hope that ideas will come to push that mod further and expand it. Between the release of RR and now, I have made 4 other mods (‘Psychic Sims’, which is another quirky one, and then more realistic mods: ‘Road to Romance’, ‘No Strings Attached’, and ‘WooHoo Wellness & Pregnancy Overhaul’ which I’m still working on and has been released only partially at this moment). I am learning more with each and every one of them and pushing the complexity of what I do (both in terms of difficulty for me and in terms of the resulting mod). I want to keep expanding and finding new ways to bring new aspects to the game. I like the game as it is, but I just prefer to create!

How to Install & play this Mod. The first step is to download the mod. Then, open the zip file, drag and drop the three files in your mod folder. Next, start your game. Once in game, you’ll have to go into build mode and purchase the “holy book” for your Sims to read. You’ll find it under “miscellaneous” in the “Activities and Skills” category. Next, have your

game. Once in game, you’ll have to go into build mode and purchase the “holy book” for your Sims to read. You’ll find it under “miscellaneous” in the “Activities and Skills” category. Next, have your Sims read the book to discover religion. A notification will pop up to let you know that your Sim has started developing their religious skill. You can now select a religion for your sim, and you can also activate the auto-assign feature that will give religions to any Sims that set foot on the same lot as your sim. But be warned, Sims of different faiths don’t like to live under the same roof. I had a couple that got assigned different religions, and by the time I moved the husband out, all relationship bars were red to the max: they hated each other. I do love this feature as it creates a bit of drama and takes some of the control away from the player. Let’s take a look at the religions so you can make an informed decision on which one will suit your Sim best. Congregation of Non-Believers

Believers puts logic above all else. Imagination is reserved for fiction (which they are fond of); logic governs the rest. Some of them like to try to convince religious Sims that their faith is but a flight of fancy. Other Non-Believer Sims have more respect for all the faiths of the world, but simply do not understand them or partake. Sims within the Congregation of Non-Believers enjoy activities that involve logic and science. They dislike wellness activities such as yoga and meditation, and anything they would call "New Agey". Worship of the Watcher

This is a place for all Sims who call themselves non-religious but, in the end, kind of worship logic and science. The Congregation of Non-

In this one, some Sims realize that there is some higher power (you, the player) controlling

their lives from above... (note: the name is taken from Sims Medieval, but this is NOT the same religion as in that game.) Some Sims believe that they are not alone - that they are, in fact, never alone but always under the mighty eye of the Watcher. Fickle and unpredictable is the Watcher - at times looking on with fondness, and granting Sims their every whim and desire other times, casting an angry eye onto their lives, removing ladders from swimming pools, breaking relationships, or pushing them to work on a skill to exhaustion. Some days, a Sim will turn to the sky and wave in despair to ask for their needs to be met to receive no answer and other times, their prayer will be heard. Benevolent or merciless is the Watcher. Of course, Sims who believe in the Watcher do their best to attract the Watcher’s generosity. They try to behave as well as they can and clean their plates instead of leaving them on the table. They believe that the Watcher likes to see them create, therefore creativity is their favored way to honor their deity. They see Occult creatures as a form of evil, for they embody the darker sides of the Watcher. These Sims are therefore instantly uncomfortable near vampires, aliens, spell-casters, and mermaids. Of course, human “evil” and “mean” Sims also make them uncomfortable. (Note: Occult Sims can join but they will get an occasional +3 embarrassed moodlet.)

Cult of the Cowplant are Nature worshipers. They focus on protecting and understanding nature. The Cowplant embodies the mysteries of Mother Nature. Sims of this religion love to garden in general and practice Wellness activities yoga, meditation, etc. Members of the Cult of the Cowplant dislike technology and become bored when using computers, playing video games, or watching TV. And, in case you were curious, they are not afraid of being eaten by

Cowplants. On the contrary, Cowplant worshippers believe that if the plant spits you out, then you have truly become a friend of the Cowplant and its worshipers.

Treaders of the Occult This is a welcoming environment for all Occult Sims and their fans. This faith unites alien believers and incognito aliens, vampire worshipers and vampires themselves. Mermaids and spellcasters sit amongst humans as they all listen to the same sermon. The Treaders of the Occult fully embrace inter-species dynamics and advocate for peace and acceptance. Members of this faith are happy in the presence of Occult Sims. Occult Sims gain interactions that will quickly make them friends with the human Treaders. All Treaders share a taste for the gothic and classic styles, and a love for the night. Treaders become Confident in the depths of night, and a little uncomfortable around noon. Cult of the Cowplant This is a Sim Faith with a bit of a hippy vibe, a good place for nature lovers. The faithful of the

New social interactions are unlocked. You can ask another Sim what religion they are, argue about it, or find common ground. Each religion has its own set of interactions. an emotion randomly. The emotion can be a +1 confident, inspired, or happy moodlet and lasts 4 hours. The poor Sim whose joy was stolen gets all their positive emotions removed, and a 4-hour, +2 sad.

There is also a new event available called “Religious Gathering.” Make your churches and temples "GENERIC" lots to earn the option to host religious gatherings. You can invite up to 20 Sims. NPCs are configured to sit down and wear formal attire. For now, a player-controlled Sim must give the religious speech. Click on the podium and “give a speech” (or use the custom microphone.) The creator of this mod has mentioned updating it so NPCs can also give speeches. I have yet to test this out. I only did one event, invited all the Worshippers my sim knew but forgot her brother was a Treader. The whole congregation spent the event with tense moodlets from having an occult or occult supporter sim nearby. Yes, did I forget to mention this? Your Sims get custom moodlets: Worshippers get a +2 happy buff after giving a blessing; Cultists get a +3 bored buff from using technology, and so on. If that’s not enough to make you want to try this mod, there is more! The mod comes with a new occult. No vampires, no aliens, or mermaids in your game? No problem!
