SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

Well folks, we survived 2020!! The odds didn’t look great towards the end of the year, but we hung in there and now another year is underway... and can I just say, whoever ordered the weather for January 2021 deserves a promotion!! Wow!! What a treat to be outside when the wind doesn’t hurt your face or freeze your fingers when in the picture pen!! Although these above seasonal temperatures won’t last forever, it will sure make the winter seem shorter, that’s for sure! A few of our friends have celebrated a milestone birthday recently- happy 65th birthday to Vern Lafrentz, aka Mr. Wheatland, Wheatland Cattle Co., Bienfait, SK- while likely it was just another day on the ranch, we hope you at least got to have cake! Also, happy 50th birthday to Darryl Snider, formerly of Bohrson Marketing Services- we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and hope you had a great birthday! With the fall female sale season in the rearview mirror, and the upcoming bull sale season on the horizon, here’s to hoping these dang rules will ease and we can all get back to “normal.” Dare I say I miss hangin out in a stall, visiting with folks about show day, or celebrating a great sale day in a drafty sale barn!? Boy, I never thought I would complain about being able to watch a sale online, in my pj’s, drinking coffee- while it was a nice change, I sure miss our friends and customers and can’t wait to dust off my boots, pull on my long-johns and head to a sale!! Fingers crossed my friends, the countdown is on! We certainly hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these uncertain times and extend our condolences to those who have lost family members, and to those who have had to close their business doors due to Covid-19. Here’s hoping 2021 will heal your hearts and open new doors for a brighter future. We’re all in this together. Until next time friends..... John and Joanne

Coat Color Dilution in Simmental Cattle

Simmental, Hereford, and Gelbvieh cattle can carry a mutation in a gene (called Pmel17) which causes a black coat color to be diluted to a grey color. This is a different mutation for coat color dilution from Charolais cattle. The dilution mutation is masked in red cattle (or at least not as obvious as the dilution effect in black cattle). The control of red or black coat color is on a separate gene from the dilution mutation, but the dilution mutation can affect the expression of the coat color phenotype. This is a phenomenon called epistasis when the expression of one gene is affected by a second gene. As discussed in a previous forum, all red animals are recessive for the coat color gene. Let’s call the red allele “e”. Black haired animals can either carry one (heterozygous, Ee) or two black alleles (homozygous, EE). Like the black coat color phenotype, dilution is a dominant trait so it only takes one mutated gene to see the dilution. Let’s call the dilution mutation “D” and the normal Pmel17 allele “d”. Therefore, if an animal carries one copy of the dilution mutation and one normal allele for the Pmel17 gene, you would expect that half of their progeny will inherit the dilution mutation and the other half the normal allele. Whether or not the progeny appear to have a diluted coat color is dependent on the coat color of the offspring. All the black calves with the dilution mutation will have a grey coat color. The black calves with the normal Pmel17 gene will be black. All the red calves will most likely appear normal (although those with the dilutor gene may have a slightly lighter red color). The following list represents the genotype (what alleles the animal has; E = black coat, e = red coat, D = dilution mutation, d = no dilution) and the resulting phenotype (coat color appearance): E_/dd = Black E_/D_ = Grey ee/dd = Red ee/D_ = Red (might be slightly lighter in color) Why is it relevant to understand the above information? If you have animals that are black, you probably don’t need to test them for the dilutor gene as they would appear grey if they carried it. However, your red animals can “hide” the dilution mutation without notice. Therefore, if you are mating red animals to black animals and you don’t want any grey calves, you should test your red animals for the dilutor gene.

Using Expected Progeny Differences in a Breeding Program (from MB Agriculture website)

The role of purebred breeders is to improve the genetic quality of the seedstock cattle that they sell to commercial beef producers. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) have become a popular genetic improvement tool in recent years. This article is intended to explain some important factors that must be considered when EPDs are being used in a sire selection program. Excellent background information regarding EPDs is available from the breed associations listed at the end of this document The EPDs for a yearling bull calf appeared recently in a purebred magazine: birth weight = 3.1 weaning weight = 9.1 yearling weight = 12.4 milk = 10.4 However, these EPDs are not particularly useful. You must be able to answer three important questions before a set of EPDs can be used. For the sake of this article, we’ll call this bull “Enigma.”

Question 1. Who calculated the EPD?

Some breed associations publish a single North American EPD for the entire breed. However, sometimes the sire lines used in Canada are not used extensively in the U.S. Consequently, there may not be enough genetic “linkage” between Canadian and American herds to create a common EPD for the whole breed. As a result, some breeds publish separate Canadian and American EPDs. Unless they are published in a joint “North American EPD”, a Canadian EPD and an American EPD cannot be compared directly, and EPDs from different breeds cannot be compared to each other.

Question 2. What is the breed average for each EPD?

Whether an EPD value is above average depends on what the breed average EPD value is. The breed average EPD value is not always zero. Most breeds use a fixed base. This means that the breed average EPD changes from year to year. If the breed average EPD for weaning weight is +20, a bull with a +15 EPD is expected to sire calves that weigh 5 lbs less than calves sired by a breed average bull. Put simply, a positive EPD doesn’t always mean above average. Be aware of what the current breed average EPD is for each trait. Current EPD values for a number of breeds are shown in the table. Most breeds update their EPDs twice per year. Pretend that the breed averages for our bull Enigma were 3.3 for birth weight, 9.4 for weaning weight, 47.0 for yearling weight, and 9.1 for milk. Comparing Enigma’s EPDs to the breed average is very informative. He is near the breed average for birth weight, milk and weaning weight, but is far below average for yearling weight. Average or below average EPDs are not necessarily bad. This is a moderate bull, and will likely produce moderate sized replacement cows that do not have excessive feed requirements. But he is probably not an ideal terminal sire due to his below average yearling weight.

Question 3. What is the accuracy of the EPD value?

The EPD value only tells half the story. The accuracy value is equally important. The accuracy of an EPD tells you how much data was used in the calculation. Accuracy values range from 0 to 1. The higher the value the more reliable it is, or the less likely the value of the EPD will change significantly in the future. Initially, data from parents, ancestors and half sibs is used. So it was theoretically possible to calculate a weaning weight EPD for Enigma as soon as he was born, based on the EPDs of his relatives. EPD= +15lbs, ACC = 0.10 But this prediction is not very accurate, since it is based solely on the performance of its relatives, and does not include Enigma’s performance. Most breed associations will not release EPDs that are based strictly on pedigree data. Once Enigma has been weaned, the weaning weight EPD will be adjusted and the accuracy will increase because of the added information.

EPD’s

(continued from page 42)

EPD = +11 lbs, ACC = 0.25 Once Enigma has sired calves of its own, the EPD will continue to change and the accuracy will continue to rise. Once 40 progeny records have been added, the EPD value will stabilize and the accuracy value will begin to plateau. EPD = +12 lbs, ACC = 0.70 Accuracy values should be provided alongside the EPD value. If accuracy values are not provided, ask the seller for them. A low-accuracy EPD is simply a preliminary estimate on a young sire, and it may change when data from his calves becomes available. For example, a weaning weight EPD with an accuracy of 0.30 may vary by 10.7 lbs from the true value. A high accuracy EPD (ACC = 0.70) belongs to a proven sire. A weaning weight EPD with an accuracy of 0.65 may vary by 7.2 lbs from the true value. This is a substantial improvement from the unproven sire mentioned above, and is much more valuable than the individual bull’s actual weaning weight. Even a low accuracy EPD provides more genetic information than using only the actual measurement. No accuracy numbers were shown for our bull, Enigma. But since he is only a yearling, we can be sure that no progeny data were available when the EPDs were published. Consequently, the accuracy of these EPDs is probably below 0.30 for all traits. Since this EPD may change as more data becomes available, you may not wish to breed this bull to a large number of cows.

Using EPD Values in a Breeding Program

EPDs are a valuable tool to aid purebred and commercial producers in selecting potential breeding stock. Cattlemen must clearly define their breeding objectives and determine what sort of bull is needed to meet these goals. Then carefully consider the EPDs of the bull as well as his relatives, if possible. The basic steps to choosing a herd sire are as follows:

1. Traits That Determine Your Bottom Line

Strict Cow/Calf Producer. If calves are sold at weaning time, birth weight and weaning weight are the primary considerations. Maternal traits (milk, stayability) and mature size must also be considered if replacement heifers are being selected. Selling Calves as Yearlings. Birth weight and yearling weight are of primary importance. Maternal traits, such as milk and stayability and mature size are important if replacement heifers are retained. Stayability is the probability of daughters remaining in the herd for at least six years and have the opportunity to become part of the breeding herd. Retaining Ownership Through to Slaughter. Birth weight and carcass traits (weight, yield grade, quality grade) are of primary importance, although maternal traits and mature weight must be considered if daughters are being kept back from this sire.

2. Don’t Forget the Other Traits

Keep in mind that EPDs are only available for a limited number of traits. Single trait selection can produce rapid results, but is not recommended because it can cause a decline in other traits. For example, simply selecting for extremely high yearling weights will probably cause birth weights to increase, and may cause calving ease to decline. Other factors such as structural soundness, conformation and temperament are equally important but are not included in traditional genetic evaluations because they are difficult to measure objectively.

3. Are You Satisfied With Your Herd’s Current Performance?

Which traits need improvement, and in what direction do they need to go? You must have production records in order to answer these questions (ex, smaller mature cow size, lighter birth weights, improved stayability). (continued on page 50)

EPD’s

(continued from page 44)

4. Which Breed Will Match Your Needs?

Select a breed that will enhance the traits that you identified in step 2. Crossing two unrelated breeds is the simplest way to improve low heritability traits (such as reproductive traits) that are slower to respond to selection. This phenomenon is known as hybrid vigor. Moderate sized breeds tend to be superior for maternal traits, and can be used to moderate mature cow size; large framed breeds tend to be superior for growth traits. However, these generalizations do not always apply; there is as much variation within a breed as there is between breeds. This is where EPDs become useful.

5. Within That Breed, Which Bull Has EPDs That Meet the Goals Listed in Step 1?

It is clear from step 1 that the bull selection process becomes more complex as the number of breeding objectives increases. Rapid growth and superior maternal traits are not usually found in the same genetic package. Producers selecting their own replacements heifers while retaining ownership beyond weaning must make a decision. They can either find a sire that does all jobs acceptably well (a balance of maternal and growth traits), or split the cow herd, breeding some cows to a sire with strong maternal traits (calving ease, milk, stayability) to produce replacement heifers, and breeding the rest to a terminal sire (growth, carcass traits) to produce feeder or slaughter cattle.

Canada Invests $5 Million To Address Pandemic Disruptions To Meat Processing

30 December 2020-The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to $5 million in immediate, emergency assistance to help the province’s beef farmers manage costs associated with the impacts of COVID-19 and to help protect Ontario’s food supply network. Ontario beef farmers can apply for funding to help cover increased costs of feeding and setting aside market-ready cattle due to COVID-19 related processing delays. This funding flows from an agreement reached by the governments this spring to support these producers, in a timely manner, in the event that processing disruptions impacted the sector. The Canada-Ontario COVID-19 Beef Emergency Feed Maintenance Initiative is being offered through AgriRecovery, under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The provincial contributions are part of Ontario’s Action Plan: Responding to COVID-19 which will provide funding support for eligible farmers. Additional details on program mechanics will be released soon. Agricorp will deliver the programming and receive applications. Minister Bibeau said, “we care deeply about the well-being of our farmers and understand the repercussions that short-term capacity reductions have on livestock producers. This is another measure we are taking to support our cattle farmers and to continue to keep high-quality and affordable meat products available to Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic.” This funding is in addition to other supports launched this year to assist the agri-food sector in meeting challenges related to the COVID-19 outbreak. This includes: • a $4 million Meat Processors Capacity Improvement Initiative; • a portal to connect farms and other agri-food sector business with labour needs to job seekers; • creation of the $26.6 million Enhanced Agri-food Workplace Protection Program; • a commitment of $25.5 million to help minimize COVID 19 exposure risks in the workplace and support the province’s food supply chain through the Agri-food Prevention and Control Innovation Program; and, • a recent investment of an additional $50 million into the Risk Management Program, one year earlier than originally promised. Since June 2018, both the federal and provincial governments have committed cost-share support to approximately 4,200 projects through the Partnership to help eligible Ontario farmers, processors, businesses and sector organisations innovate and grow. “We are continuing to work with our farmers and all the agri-food heroes in our food processing network to help them meet challenges posed by COVID-19 and to keep a steady supply of safe and nutritious foods available for families. This is just one of the many ways our province continues to support farmers during COVID-19 and builds on the efforts we have already made in working with the agri-food sector to address urgent needs,” said Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Ernie Hardeman. Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Mentorship Program Applications Now Open

Young people looking to advance their careers in the Canadian beef industry through unique mentorship, networking and travel opportunities can now apply for the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Mentorship Program. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association’s CYL Program is a national initiative designed to equip young people ages 18-35 with the skills they need to further the success of the Canadian beef industry. Established in 2010, the program has seen over 120 graduates paired with a mentor to help propel their careers in their specific area of interest within the beef cattle sector. Each year, applications are open from the beginning of January to the end of March, where 24 semi-finalists are then selected from an impressive pool of applicants from across the country involved in various parts of the beef industry such as cow-calf production, feedlot production, research, post-secondary studies, finance, communications and more. Semi-finalists are invited to compete in the annual CYL Selections event held in conjunction with the Canadian Beef Industry Conference. Participants are judged in roundtable discussions centred around timely industry topics. From this event, 16 program participants are chosen to participate in the program and are paired with a hand-picked industry leader for a nine-month mentorship opportunity in the participant’s specified area of interest in the beef industry. Participants also receive $2,000 to use towards learning opportunities of their choosing. Along with industry networking opportunities, participants often form strong relationships within their peer group in the program who are equally passionate about the success of the Canadian beef industry and serve as meaningful contacts and friendships for years to come. If you’re a young person looking to take your career in the beef industry to the next level, or you know of a young industry leader who would excel in this program, please visit our website at www.cattlemensyoungleaders.com to learn more and apply. CYL applications for the 2021-22 program year are open from January 4, 2021 to March 31, 2021 at 11:59 pm MT.

Bull Selection Principles-Be An Educated Consumer Matt Spangler, UNL Associate Professor and Beef Genetics Extension Specialist

Listen to a discussion of the content in this article on this episode of the BeefWatch podcast. You can subscribe to new episodes in iTunes or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/unlbeefwatch into your podcast app.

For many, this is the time of year when bull purchasing decisions occur. Before you buy a bull, consider what you need to improve. The key questions that every rancher needs to answer are: 1) What are my breeding/marketing goals? 2) What traits directly impact the profitability of my enterprise? 3) Are there environmental constraints that dictate the level of performance that is acceptable for a given trait in my enterprise? Once these three questions are answered, sire selection becomes much simpler. The answers to these questions inherently lead a producer to the traits that are economically relevant to their enterprise. We call these traits Economically Relevant Traits (ERT). Fundamentally these are traits that are directly associated with a revenue stream or a cost. All traits that are not ERTs are indicator traits, or a trait that is genetically correlated to an ERT but not an ERT itself. A classic example of an indicator trait is birth weight. Selection to decrease birth weight in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of dystocia is practiced by numerous commercial bull buyers. However, birth weight does not have a direct revenue source or cost associated with it. The trait that does have a cost associated with it is calving ease (or difficulty). Calving ease is related to the level of assistance needed during a calving event. Although the two are related, the genetic correlation between calving ease and birth weight is only between -0.6 and -0.8, suggesting that birth weight only explains 36-64% of the genetic differences between animals for calving difficulty. Consequently, to reduce calving difficulty, bulls should be selected based on calving ease EPD and birth weight EPD should be ignored. Selecting to improve multiple traits simultaneously can be cumbersome, but is necessary given multiple traits act together to inform the profitability of cow-calf enterprises. Just open up any sale catalog and it is easy to become confused immediately. Economic indices can help alleviate this confusion. An economic index is a collection of EPDs weighted by their economic value such that traits with greater impacts on production goals have a larger economic weight associated with them. These tools allow producers to select bulls based on their genetic potential to improve net profit. When making selection decisions based on economic indices, it’s important to consider your particular breeding objective and the traits that will achieve desired production goals. For instance, if your production goals included retaining replacements and selling cull heifers and steer progeny at weaning, then an index that assumes all offspring are sold on a grid-based system is inappropriate for your operation. It is also important to know the breed average values for particular indexes and to use percentile ranks to determine how far above or below average a particular animal is compared to the rest of a breed. For more information relative to EPDs and selection indices, go to www.eBeef.org. (from www.beef.unl.edu)

Simple Synchronization Of CowsOne Injection, One Time Through The Chute, And Bull Breed

94-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

Bethany Johnston, former Nebraska Extension Educator, Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension Beef Educator

Producers considering the use of this synchronization tool should remember that a number of factors affect pregnancy rate including cow body condition score, plane of nutrition, cattle health, and bull fertility. Listen to a discussion of the content in this article on this episode of the BeefWatch podcast. You can subscribe to new episodes in iTunes or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/unlbeefwatch into your podcast app.

Have you wanted to have more calves born earlier in your calving season, but did not want to deal with the increase in labor, cost and facilities to utilize estrus synchronization and artificial insemination? The protocol shown (Figure 1.) can increase the number of cows coming into estrus early in the breeding season, with one time through the chute, one injection, and breeding using only natural service.

This protocol calls for bulls to be turned out with the cows on Day 0. On Day 5, cows are given a shot of prostaglandin (PGF2α) which synchronizes a majority of the cows to be in heat/estrus from Day 6 through Day 10. The injection of prostaglandin causes any cows with a corpus luteum present on one of their ovaries to regress, ceasing progesterone production. This then triggers the cows to come into heat/estrus. If the cow conceives during Day 1 to 5, she will not abort when given the prostaglandin injection on Day 5 because the developing corpus luteum at the site of ovulation on the ovary has not yet reached maturity and will not respond to prostaglandin. Research conducted at the Fort Keogh Research Center near Miles City, Montana utilized this protocol over a three year period, achieving pregnancy rates over 85% in a 32-day breeding season. Research from the University of Nebraska showed 75% of cows calved in the first 21 days of the calving season utilizing this estrus synchronization protocol as compared to only 63% of cows from non-synchronized natural service breeding. Utilizing natural service with this method of estrus synchronization will require adequate bull power. A bull to cow ratio of 1:15 with yearling bulls or 1:25 with mature bulls should be sufficient. Because early breeding and the synchronized estrus is occurring over a 10 day period, fertile and active bulls with adequate libido should be able to handle the number of cows that will be coming into heat. Breeding bulls should undergo a breeding soundness exam prior to the breeding season. Producers considering the use of this synchronization tool should remember that a number of factors affect pregnancy rate including cow body condition score, plane of nutrition, cattle health, and bull fertility. Estrus synchronization can shorten the calving season. The article “Use of Natural Service Sires with Synchronized Estrus” highlights other advantages of estrus synchronization and natural service.

Note: A relatively new prostaglandin product, which is in a high-concentration formula, allows for a 2-mL dose to be injected subcutaneously (under the skin). Other prostaglandin products have an intramuscular injection (IM) label requirement, which requires a longer needle for deep muscle penetration. IM injections have a greater risk to develop lesions in the muscle that affects meat quality. The 2018 Nebraska Beef Report article “Comparison of Two Alternate Prostaglandin Products in Yearling Beef Heifers” showed beef heifers performed similarly to either the IM injection of prostaglandin or the subcutaneous injection of high-concentration prostaglandin.
