SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7
Happy fall y’all!! As I sit down to write, the thermometer reads like a warm day in August, and the combines are still rollin along...can’t ask for much more than that! Well, I guess a sprinkle of rain wouldn’t hurt, but it seems the tap has been turned off for quite a while now! Here’s to hoping for some rainfall before we have to see the awful white stuff! But in all honesty, a big dump about mid November wouldn’t hurt my feelings either!! I guess we will have to wait and see... We would like to send our sincere condolences to the Wilcox family on the loss of Betty, our thoughts are with you all. It’s been a busy summer....lots of new faces to introduce to our Simmental family, read on to meet them! Congratulations to our fellow Simmental friends who have added to their herd over the summer! Also, we would like to send out happy 40th birthday wishes to our friend Amy Bonchuk, AJB Livestock, Rossburn, MB...good thing we weren’t able to gather in large groups I say, as there may have been too much “giggle juice” consumed perhaps! We hope it was a good one Amy! For us, our summer has been pretty busykids got to take in some barrel racing in town, even got the old man to go for a spin! And, just recently, finally found the Mrs a bigger shack and a few acres to call our own! Don’t worry, not much is changing for those who need to reach us by mail, but if you’re comin for a visit you’ll need new directions! Just a hop, skip & a jump away from the in-laws, so will still be able to get my fix to feed cows and thaw water bowls this winter! As we look ahead to the fall shows & sales, we are once again looking forward to seeing our friends and customers, hopefully without having to wear a mask, and can’t wait to visit with you all! Here’s hoping the prices stay steady for those who are taking some females to town, and if you’re on the buyin end, I hope you had a bumper hay crop with extra bales in the shed! See y’all down the sale trail.... John

JGL Opens Office In Virden Submitted by Anne Davison, Virden Empire Advance
Former key people with Heartland Livestock Services, are now working with a new
livestock broker and setting up a permanent office in Virden, MB. Jameson Gilroy Livestock (JGL), Canada’s largest livestock broker has expanded their operations into Manitoba. They have hired Rick Wright, who served as senior cattle buyer for Heartland and Robin Hill, who has managed the Heartland Virden auction. Rick Wright Cattle Consulting has been engaged to set up the JGL Manitoba livestock marketing network. According to Wright, “Having JGL in Manitoba on a full-time basis will add more competition for Manitoba cattle. The marketing industry has been consolidating and shrinking in the Rick Wright past few years, so having the JGL network with all of its resources will be a great benefit to Manitoba cattle producers.” Wright has worked in the cattle marketing industry in Manitoba for over 40 years, and for over seven years, he has been the Executive Administrator at Livestock Markets Assoc. of Manitoba and on the Canadian board as well. He’s happy about the new challenge ahead. “I was wanting to change the focus of what I’m doing,” says Wright, looking into the future. “I’m getting close to retirement and an opportunity came up to work with the biggest company in Canada. “I’ve hired Robin Hill to come and work with me and he brings to the table a very good skill set and a very good reputation in the industry so, I’ll be able to finish my career and step aside.” JGL opened an office in the Masson Accounting building in Virden in August and already has Robin Hill buyers on the markets in Killarney, Brandon, Virden, Alameda, Yorkton and Gladstone. They will also support Taylors’ Melita auction.

14-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
Despite a challenging 2 years of let downs and cancellations, including our 2nd Round Up, participants at Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up have shown great resilience. It was with heavy hearts that the Round Up committee was forced to cancel our show for yet another year in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. However, with a little outward thinking and help from Direct Livestock Marketing Systems (DLMS) the committee was able to host our annual event virtually to be broadcasted and judged online. It was a great success with 42 juniors entered and a total of 80 livestock entries. Despite a totally different approach to the August long weekend our juniors know and love, juniors were still able to participate in open livestock confirmation classes as well as skill building competitions such as public speaking, marketing, photography, graphic design and judging. Participants were given guidelines of how to present their animal via video. Animals were presented in show condition and videos were uploaded for broad cast on DLMS. Overall it was an incredibly strong presentation of animals and projects, juniors were applauded by the committee, peers and the general public for such adaptability and creativity despite a challenging circumstance. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors , parents, Juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success in past years. A huge thank you to everyone for their support and willingness to keep the Round Up spirit alive in our virtual show. Projects were on display on the DLMS website and the Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up Page from July 21 to August 1st. From there the general public could view all projects and check out our juniors hard work. Judging also took place during this time period and results were submitted to DLMS. On August 1st at 7pm, what would normally be our banquet and award ceremony, results were announced live on a live video broadcast on DLMS. All videos and comments were featured in a flawless manner for juniors and the public to find out in real time who would be crowned as our winners. This presentation took major effort and coordination from DLMS, and we cannot thank Mark and Joanne Shologan enough for their contribution!
