Adaptive reuse project in YMT Fruit Market
Instructor: TSUI, Chung Man Carmen # Adaptive reuse; Recycling centre; Covered walkways
Broad Area: Urban and architectural conservation, adaptive reuse of historic buildings. The project includes a study of Yau Ma Tei with the focus on the Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) of the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market, and adaptive reuse on the market, to suit modern requirements. Meanwhile, on the architectural proposal, it explains the new building use, meanwhile, the justification on the needs of the building, by conservation strategies, detailed design schemes, and a study on the conversion of the historical buildings. The research on “how recycling can be implemented and benefit the nearby area” was done and coordinated with the preservation of the fruit market to reboot the historic building clusters.

Meanwhile, the “Themed Park” here for giving the intro of the historical buildings. “Viewing Garden” mainly provide a chance to the visitor to appreciate the gable walls design of the Laans and the theatre, meanwhile, the footbridge links the plots together and provides the platform for the visitor enjoy the view from the other angle and look further.
The programmes of “The Recycling Centre” The Recycling Centre is not only for collecting and sorting the waste, but also upgrading and repoducting, meanwhile, the education works on promoting the recycling behavior and the social care.

3 Major Components Integrate into “The Recycling Centre” “Downcycle”
--- is a recycling method requiring the breakup of an object into its components or products. * Classification collection, materials recovering and restoration.
“Freecycle”
--- is a method to create a no trash environment by exchanging of goods. * Second-hand goods sharing and exchanging platform.
“Upcycle”
--- is a so-called innovative reuse mechanism for the transition into more high quality, such as artistic value or environmental value of by-products, waste material, unnecessary or discarded products. * Environmental workshop, educational support and reproduction.

# Courtyard school; SEN caring; Nature
The project aims to explore the architectural design of a creative and unconventional learning environment. The primary school was designed for the children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) who may need special caring and support. The highlight of the design is the adding of the courtyard to the different functional spaces. Kids like to observation, bringing back the nature to the school can help to motivate or calm down. Courtyard school can not only provide immersive nature experience education, but also distinguish from the outside world, reducing the outside interference to the education.

Symptoms of Learning Disability
Concept --- “Courtyard and School”
The increasing numbers of SEN student occupied a huge part of concerns in creating a SEN-friendly environment for them to study well, however, there are different types of the symptoms of learning disabilities including mental and physical issues. To tackle that, it needs to act appropriately to the situation.
Sensory and/or Physical
The environment has sensory stimulation to SEN students, which is conducive to their physical and mental development. In the natural environment, people can show a state of freedom and relaxation

Design Development Composition
1. Locate the main entrance, car entrance and outdoor playground accordingly.
2. Inner courtyards were added on the center of different functional spaces.
3. Bring the greenery from the park all the way to the school.
4. Link the inner courtyards and make access to the other functional area.
5. Adust some masses to make the platform and fit the functional uses.
6. Set back the volume and dig out some voids to lessen the bulky shape.

Color and SEN Caring Color is a direct guidance to the primary students, espcially the SEN student, it helps to guide the student to the area they want to access, for instance, the classroom is in blue color or the playing space is in yellow. Moreover, certain color has certain effect to present the scence and react the behavir in a suitable manner,

Access
Solutions Setting back Distance building from the estates
The project aims to explore the design of an alternative youth hostel providing comfortable accommodation to the traveler around the world. The design was inspired by the old estate in Kong Hong, which has lightwell in the middle part of the building. The loop-like corridor links the houses together, owing to that kind of planning, it helps to improve better communication with the neighbors. In addition, the functions were inserted into the different layers of the building block, to encourage the users go outside and gather.

Other Academic Works Seaside Library
This project aims to build a public library near the seaside area of Whampoa. It covers most disciplines of the building industry, for practicing the development of a building project from the initial design stage to construction planning and costing. By using BIM as a tool to coordinate and demonstrate to develop and complete the building project.
