NORTHERN SLED

By: Simon McKenzie

Introduction Ever since the dawn of civilization, humanity has been pushing the boundaries of its own existence. Nomadic living is brought to a new level of serenity and self identity as the “Northern sled emerges into the architectural world. As snowflakes collide with the earth, you gaze across the vast, white horizon. Every breath lingers in the cold, crisp air. The only sounds are of dogs panting, a slow breeze whistling through your hair, and the sound of your own heart beating. This is the Great North. This light-weight vessel supports one individual with storage on both of the sides and the front. Solar panels fuel a heated floor. Solar energy also powers two lights, which illuminate from below the floor, creating diffused light throughout the space. At night, the floor lifts to reveal a warm bed. The roof is composed of a heat-absorbing polycarbonate resin. As one lies down, the transparent ceiling provides a view to the stars above. This vessel attempts to break the boundary between humanity and the natural world. It allows the individual to dwell closer than ever before to the immense beauty of this hostile environment.

THE VISION

Northern Sled The Vision

ENVIRONMENT This vessel is a direct response to the landscape that it inhabits. Its design puts priority on nature and its relationship with the individual. There is no gasoline. It moves with a team of dogs. Its monochromatic color scheme is inspired by the neutral colors of the Great North.

5

Northern Sled The Vision

NATURE The size of the vessel is strategically small. Not only must it be light enough to be pulled by a team of dogs, but it also should encourage the occupant to go out and experience nature. Even when inside the structure, the individual is constantly in touch of the landscape.

THE VIEW In this vessel, the architecture is used to frame the outside.

1. Solar panels cover the surface of the front as flexible metal straps hold it closed. 2. The front compartment opens, reveiling a net. This provides extra security for the storage underneath. 3. The front may also lift off. This action transforms the security net into a seat.
